    No dusting, no gut loading "and that's how they get fed every single day"
    Still LOTS of room for improvement.

  • @louvamber4904
    @louvamber4904 5 років тому +278

    You did a fairly good improvement today, but as someone with four leo's I'll give some tips to improve even more so your animals get the best lives they can! I know you love them, it just needs some more improvements to make it better, and I know a loving pet keeper like you will be happy to make any change to make their lives better. I've tried to put reasons for everything so you know exactly why :) I know its a lot of stuff but I've only said things that I do myself, as do most good keepers in the leo community:
    - Change the substrate again. When you hold them, they are very soft. While the mat won't kill them, its also abrasive and will be irritating to their skin, plus really hard to clean up. Use kitchen shelf liner, paper towels or even slate tiles! You even said in the video that its like sandpaper - I think I'd cry if I had to sleep on that, imagine the poor animals with their tiny toes and soft bellies?
    - You need a proper wet hide. You can literally get a plastic tub, cut a hole in the side and fill it with sphagnum moss or paper towels you've already wet (sphagnum moss lasts longer). It's better to have it in a box so it doesn't get the air too humid which we don't want (they come from arid, dry countries) plus it is wet all over so they can get themselves wet easier to help with shedding. My four practically live in their wet hides, as do many geckos, they love them a lot!
    - you'll have better luck taming and handling if they are separate. I notice your favourite is calmer, likes handling, has its full tail. The other is skittish, less confident, doesn't want to be touched even after seven years of trying. They also don't seem to go near each other. I expect the confident one is bullying the skittish one which is why you have these behaviours. That would be why you have one that likes you whole the other is always trying to get away from any type of interactions. You will find that one is much shorter lived and stressed out, perhaps even thinner, than the favourite. Leo's should never be kept together after something like eight months, they are one hundred per cent solitary except for breeding and even that need monitoring because sometimes they'd rather kill each other.
    -The results in bullying with a male and female are just the same because they don't mate for life or make friends or anything. They will bully each other and the female will be tormented by the male for breeding during those seasons, plus she never has time off to replenish her supplies of calcium and vitamins, so it can eventually kill her like any other female creature. One day one may even kill the other and that would be really bad. Plus, with breeding, you may find the female will become egg-bound and not breeding will help this. Obviously, if you want to, that is fine but you need to not do it at every opportunity to make it safe for the female and that means waste no time in separating because she is at very high risk.
    - For feeding, I actually say you should do it TWICE A WEEK for adults, Superworms are totally fine, but they need dusting with Calculm+D3 (if you don't have a UV light) and the correct leopard gecko vitamines. Watch Leopard Gecko and her feeding videos for the right routine for that. Feeding by tonges each feed can really improve your bond, it helped me tame by babies when they were tiny so they were really tame by adulthood, and it would help you too. Plus, you can make sure you know exactly how much each is eating and not have escapees that turn into beatles! If you feed crickets, hoppers or dubias, just take them out after 15 minutes or so when they're done. A feeding rutine only twice a week is very important to their health.
    - I suggest taking the two of them to an exotics vet (has to be an exotics on, call ahead and check they do reptiles and have the right degrees to prove it) to check for impaction. There is little you can do, but at least you'll know so you can keep an eye on them and get an idea of lifespan if it is very bad, but hopefully, it is not. Reptiles pretend their fine until very suddenly dying on you, so its good to know what you have on your hands at all times.
    - while you wait to separate them, add more cold and warm hides so they can have complete blocks from each other. They will also need two wet hides until they are seperated at which point they can each have their own one.
    - join a leopard gecko group online, or at least checkout Leopard Gecko on youtube, to really learn about your options in keeping them. Leopard Gecko has instructions on feeding, routines, taming, many substrate types and anything else you need to learn that little bit more to get where you need to be :)
    I'm really glad you did some changes, it just needs that last little push and then you'll have it down :)

    • @louvamber4904
      @louvamber4904 5 років тому +12

      @@jenna7130 they can, but you will always, always run the risk of one killing the other. No matter what. Some animals can be paired as they are more tolarent of each other no matter the species but it really shouldn't be done will almost all gecko species. For breeding it is OK for small periods of time, but I've seen geckos that have been mauled by males/females during breeding, and it's not pretty. If they do that when activy wanting to breed, they most definitely can turn on each other when kept in the same box 24/7

    • @jenna7130

    • @louvamber4904
      @louvamber4904 5 років тому +12

      @@jenna7130 there is always a dominant one. It could be like nicks where they are in separate hides because the stronger pushes out the weaker, or they may be together and you see one resting on the other in a dominate position. You may not always see it. Jessica's animal ark shows that it can occasionally work. But as even she says, it is not normal and shouldn't be tried and at any stage they can turn on each other and she is watching for the signs to separate them. There is always the two that live and survive together. There is always that one that doesn't get impacring on sand. There is always a one no matter the subject that manages it. That does not mean any person ever should be encouraged or praised for putting their animals in a position where at any point they may turn on each other and one could be mauled and or killed. It's irresponsible pet keeping to suggest it at all and I encourage you to think about separating your own two. As I suggesting at the start, you may find they have more confidence, are easier to handle and tame and with less stress they can have a longer lifespan

    *Extra Advice*
    You should add another hide. Each terrarium should have at least 3 hides. The other one that you should add is a humid hide. You can use plastic bins etc and you have to keep it moist. If you dont have one of these it can lead to stuck shed which can cut circulation and lose of limbs.

    I'm really glad you listened to the advice on your previous video and gave your betta more water and have decided to separate the tortoise and leopard geckos. However, the new enclosure does still need changes in order to make it suitable for the animals. I don't recommend housing Male and females together due to dominance issues, over breeding, and not sharing food. Because she has a regen tail it's harder to see her weight unless you weigh her.
    If you insist on keeping them together you will need to make changes to the tank. A larger heat pad with a thermostat should be provided and 2 hot hides so they aren't fighting for resources. 2 cool hides should also be provided along with 2 humid hides with moist moss inside for when they are in shed. Spraying the whole enclosure isnt a very good method and it's best to allow the animal to select the humidity. I didnt see a dish in the enclosure with calcium, Leo's need to be able to free feed on calcium when they choose and their feeders should always be dusted with calcium with d3 and a multivitamin at least 2-3x a month. I'd also like to suggest more enrichment, the tank is completely bare in the centre. Also please make sure to scrub water dishes and hides especially new ones before they go in the tank, they grow bacteria and the water dish looked rather scummy.
    If I may recommend watching a few of LeopardGeckoUA-cams videos on leopard gecko care I think that may be super helpful. You want to do what's best for them while also promoting the proper care for others to see, I hope you will continue to make the necessary changes!

    Just thought of another suggestion, you could get them a moist hide. It would help when they are in shed and also with hydration. I use an Exo Terra Gecko Cave for mine. It has a lid that lifts off so you can spray the inside with water. I have mine filled with sphagnum moss but you can also use paper towel. Just don't put the moist hide on the hot side of the tank or it will dry out so fast you will have to spray it multiple times a day. I have mine in the middle of the tank and even though I live in Wisconsin I still have to spray it every morning.

    Hey! I love the new enclosure! I have a few tips to give that may help with taking care of your lovely babies.
    TIPS:
    -A moist hide with paper towels or moss will help them get a humid environment to shed in without increasing the overall humidity in the tank. It also helps having an extra hide in the tank.
    - Adding calcium w/o d3 to the tank will help them get the extra calcium they need. Also, make sure to gut load your feeders bugs and dust them in calcium w/ d3.
    - I suggest adding more decor to the tank for added enrichment!
    - You never said if you had this or not but, adding something to regulate the under tank heater is a good safety precaution!
    - I suggest just putting down paper towels. It may sound like that could be a bad idea but, it’s actually one of the best options for leopard geckos. It’s affordable, easy to clean, and removes all risk of impaction!
    I hope these tips help a lot! I’m always happy to answer any questions and I’m just here to improve the life of animals. The improvement in the enclosure is great so far!

    Great job Nick! You did everything right for your scale babies. I just have 2 suggestions to make upkeep easier for you. First suggestion is to put a folded piece of paper towel on the area where they go to the bathroom, that way you just have to replace the paper towel to clean the tank instead of having to take everything out and hose down the sand mat. Second suggestion is to cut the excess off the sand mat with a box cutter so everything fits nicely and the Geckos won't try to get under the mat.

    So I'm not the kind of person to tell you what to do, but something is nagging at me. It's normally not healthy to have leopard geckos to live together, have they always lived in the same tank? I was watching the way the female behaves and I would suggest perhaps separating the two, being in the same enclosure as another bigger leopard gecko could be stressing her out, also the way you handle her is a bit rough. If your leopard gecko is like that you should make slow movements but I can't tell you how to handle things, the only thing I'm suggesting is you separate the leopard geckos, the easiest way to do it is to put a wall in the enclosure maybe made of cardboard if you don't feel like buying a new one. Then once you get them separated I would try to interact with her for at least 15 minutes a day, you don't have to hold her just get her used to your hand more, I'm not seeing anything aggressive about her I'm just seeing her scared of your hand.
    You can ignore this comment I'm just stating what I see and some suggestions for what I see.
    Ah also, don't keep them on mealworms. Geckos absolutely love waxworms.
    Probably a pain by now but I would recommend a tank that opens up from the side, it just makes your hand less predator-like because in the wild birds swoop down and grab them.

    TIP:
    I love how you keep learning and taking advice from your fans and I want to give you a few tips to make your geckos habitat look good and have your geckos happy.
    1- I would add a plastic tub with wet paper towels for whenever your gecko sheds, when a gecko sheds it needs moisture to loosen up the old skin which helps it slide right off.
    2- I would add more large decor like rocks and more plants which also act as extra hiding places and makes the geckos feel like there safer.
    3- I recommend having a heating mat that reaches at least half of the tank. You also place the moist hide in between cold and warm side.
    4- keep a mealworm dish that you can use for whenever you leave the geckos for a while. They sell the, for cheap and you can buy some that looks natural for your tank.
    This is all the tips I have.

    Hey! Its great that you redid the tanks! There's only a few other things to make it pretty much perfect for them! When you feed the insects to the leopard geckos, make sure your put them in calcium first :) The next thing is that they need a warm hide on one side of the tank (so on top of the heat mat), they need a cool hide (so on the other side, not on a heat mat) and a humid hide :) The final thing is to get a digital thermometer just so you can make sure your leopard geckos tank is the correct temperature. Once you have done that then your tank will be perfect :)

    Good job with updating the leopard gecko enclosure. But I recommend maybe putting a moist hide in. You can easily make one by using a container. And maybe in there hides put a paper towel down so there not always on the rough sand. And maybe something in the middle of the enclosure. Just in case they do fight (even if they don’t it’s always a possibility) they can have some distance from each other and not always be in sight. But other then that good job homie

    *****NOT a hate comment. Just some handy advice*****Since you are housing two leopard geckos together you should have at least 3-4 hides. 2 on the warm and 2 on the cold, so that way if they do fight they can separate themselves and still be on just the warm or cool side. Also your enclosure for them is very plain. I recommend putting more plants, logs or other objects in there for enrichment. These objects could also act as a place for them to hide without having to buy a big bulky hide. If they ever have shed issues I recommend putting in a moist hide, especially offer it when they go into shed. You could add a bottle cap filled with calcium powder into their enclosure (They would know when they need it) it would reduce dusting their food with calcium. So you would only have to occasionally dust their food with other vitamin powder that they could need. I hope this helps! And sorry if its a little long

  • @10Arami01
    @10Arami01 3 роки тому

    I'm glad your trying ☺ this is a really good start and I'm glad you want the best for your animals but they do need at least 3 hides one cool one warm and one humid, making a humid one is very simple to DIY, you should get some moss and a tubaware and make a big hole/entrance in it for the geckos make sure it's not sharp, if it's sharp you can always use sandpaper but you do need to mist the humid hide, generally you shouldn't house leos together but since they have been together for such a long time without problems I wouldn't worry about that, but be prepared if they do start to fight, you also need a hygrometer and a thermometer. I hope this helps

    your geckos are so cute and feisty! and it seems like they’re in really good health as well! that tank setup is really nice, but i would like to suggest a few things you could do to make it even better for your leos.
    first of all, leopard geckos need a moist hide to help shed their skin, the excess moisture condensed in a hide will help loosen their old skin and let them peel it off with ease, avoiding the cause of any damage to themselves. you can make one out of a tupperware container, cut an entrance in it and burn the edges to make it smooth, fill it with moss or paper towels, and then wet the container every now and then especially when you see their skin’s getting dusty and gray. place it on the hot side, that way if one of them wont share the hot hide they can just chill in the warm moist hide.
    also be careful with that mat, sometimes the bits come off and the leos could eat them and cause impaction, you should keep a close eye on their tank or maybe consider switching to a shelf/kitchen liner, there’s water proof ones and they have some different patterns available on the market.
    oh! dont forget to dust their food with calcium with d3 2/3 a week and multivitamins 1/3 a week to ensure their health is at the best they can be! (you could leave a small dish of pure calcium in their tank and they will lick it whenever they feel the need to have some, but then your mutlivitamins should have some d3 in it).
    someone in the comments already mentioned this, but you should consider getting a thermostat with a probe and place it on the hot side because sometimes the mat can overheat and burn the geckos’ tummys

    I suggest getting substrate that is loose, like Eco Earth, it doesn’t expand and it comes out the other end looking the same, the desert mats can be a hazard, as if one of the rock pieces come off they can consume one and it can get stuck and lodged in their digestive track. Eco earth is a good substrate, my leopard gecko loves it, and I suggest adding a humid hide to help with shedding, my leopard gecko is 6 months old, and he hasn’t had any problems with eco earth or shedding. Also, I suggest buying more plants and logs, they don’t like being out in the open, remember, they’re predators, but they’re also prey. It makes them feel safer when they have more places to hide.

    be careful leaving meal worms loose in there, they will get under the mat and morph on ya then it's a pita to get it all cleaned out. I like to use the dish with removable lip lid to keep them from being loose and running amok. Looks awesome!

    I would definitely recommend eco earth. At least 3 hides for one Leo. I would also recommend watching Leopard gecko talk she gives great advice and care guides that could greatly improve their living

      Bettas&Bunnies hahah very funny.. as long as they were not attacking each other they are fine! They have the same environment (both animals can live in that place)

    Not sure if you have one already but moist hides are recommended and can be made out of Tupperware. You can cut a hole in it and keep moss or paper towels or something that holds moisture and isn't harmful for them. Have a leopard myself and just want to help ad much as possible
