  • If you have ever played the video game GTA San Andreas, and listened to my favorite radio station in the game, K-DST (The Dust), then you have heard this song. If you were any bit like me, and decided to stray from the game’s story line to take a drive in the country (Perhaps in the Cheetah or that terrible handling Infernus) while listening to this song, you get a feeling of freedom and adventure. That feeling of the open road, headed towards the great unknown with nothing to your name, and nothing left to loose - that is what this song is.
Tom Petty transcended my parents’ generation and took me and my friends for a joy ride with his music, even though it was decades old by the time we heard it. Petty, Mike Campbell, and the rest of the guys in the Heartbreakers transcended pop music by creating a palatable rock and roll sound that not only could sell records, but brought elements of art, meaningful lyrics, and soulful vocals to the record table.
Runnin’ Down A Dream is a song that combines elements of simplicity, such as the simple kick-snare rhythm, with adventurous nuances such as the slide guitar during the verses. The simple elements combined with the artistic touches give this song a space and a dimension of it’s own. Every time I listen to this song, my heart beats just a little bit faster. Thank you for your music Thomas Earl Petty. You ARE the spirit of adventure.
The acoustic guitar modeler is a Yamaha SG200S. The electric guitar is a Fender Stratocaster. The condenser microphone used in this video for all of the mic’ed elements is a Neumann KMS 105. The hand drum is a Djembe.
