I got my first knife from my dad 41 years ago at 9 years old. Ka-Bar folder. You always remember your first. Cheers
Your dad sounds cool. Which Ka-bar folder?
@@mugsofmirth8101 an old 1001 if memory serves. Cheers
Mine was a 3-blade, Old Timer Jr.
Will never forget it.
Upgraded that next year to a Buck 110 folder w/leather belt sheath - the "Jr." was just too small for me, but I appreciate what dad did
@@jmmartin7766 my old man got me into knifes early and it’s been my thing since. I’m betting it was the same for you.
In Sweden we got a Mora with a red wooden handle as soon as the pacifier and the diaper was not longer needed ;)
Sal Glesser obtained permission from Al Mar for the mid-back lock for the first Spyderco, but such a lock actuating position actually dates back at least a century, as Boker was making folding knives with a mid-back lock as early as 1903.
Glass-breaker and can opener combo
Leatherman has a glass-breaker bit (costs $5 on their website). Combine that with a Wave or whatever tool you fancy, and you have all the tools you need.
A SAK and a rock. 😅
I purchased a Spyderco Tenacious for under $100 once....
Now I'm probably over 100 knives in the game.
I always have a army type P51 can opener in my wallet and in my emergency kit. Simple, cheap and easy to use
Glad to see that I'm not the only one with a couple of these. They're sooo very useful for their size!
I have had a P38 on my keyring for 40 years.
@@tmutant I’ve had one on my key ring for 20+. I don’t know how many times it’s been used as a screwdriver, scraper, etc. it even does a decent job throwing sparks from a ferro rod.
"super steel arms race" love it, so true. I'm going to quote that myself.
For the Spyderco question.... Delica 4 in k390!!!! Great blade and steel. Will find in $85 range with the wharncliff blade or serrated edge. If you want tradition shape and straight edge, might stretch you to 120
@ PuertoRicanboy100:
#1) Go to an Army surplus store, buy a P-38 can opener (or the bigger P-51), and keep it on your key ring. First did this in '86 as a teen, carried one as a soldier, and still do it today.
They (P-38s/P-51s) are great at opening cans in a pinch, and they're almost always there when you need them
#2) Buy your knife of choice that has a glass breaker.
You'll be a lot happier!
Most "knives of choice" don't have a glass breaker. Most of them are survival knives and novelties, not quality knives that are practical and useful.
Recommending someone learn to sharpen is fantastic advice. Getting that nailed down for myself makes me happy.
Thanks DCA, Thomas, and everyone for all the great suggestions on the Spyderco knives.
Great advice about the sharpening skills. 👍
Everyman's 1st knife is a Victorinox, I think-- and Victorinox has a place in even the most advanced, or the most old timer, kit. On sharpening: sand paper works great. Back it with a piece of leather, and you might as well use the leather as a strop. It's cheap, it can get to mirror polish. But of course we all love the Worksharp field tool, too. Re steel and sharpening-sometimes an easy to sharpen steel is best. You can sharpen a Victorinox on a mug, a car window, a rock. This means if all you have is the knife, it doesn't become useless. Esee takes this approach with their carbon blades, too. That said I just bought a knife in Magnacut from Knifecenter :)
Kershaw Leek would be a good first. On sale right now for 55 dollars. America made quality.
An excellent choice for starters or long time enthusiasts! To me, a great icon of the unobtrusive carry utility edc.
Depending on the nanny city or state, assisted opening folders might be illegal to carry....
This or a delica
NexTool Flagship Pro and Roxon K2SE have got both can opener and glass breaker.
Thank you again for a great video!
Elementum is a great starter knife (for adults - wouldn’t give most kids something fidgety). Another great option in that range is the CJRB pyrite.
concur fully
I have kept a P-51 Military can opener on my key chain for years. and it makes a good flat edge screw driver, light weight pry bar, and package opener (straw cutter for kids and big straws and small milk carton)
Those Lansky sharpeners are great. Often overlooked gems!
I've one for 10+ years, no complaints. and yes, I can free-hand, stones or rods. I like the Lansky and listening to the radio knowing I can't mess up.
Agree, THEY generally are tougher, hold up better when pressed and easier to sharpen when needed in the field.
Ive got one of those dog bone lansky ceramic sharpeners.
They are awesome.
The secret with using them , is don't let the knife get too dull,
There great for steels up to s30v in hardness.
Always a good watch. My Opinel carbon is generally the sharpest I own.
I have a baby Opinel on my keys, a baby Spyderco on the other keys. letter envelopes beware.
Indeed 😀
Hey DCA and Thomas! Sadly you got me into sharpening ! I used to just buy a new knife every time I dulled one. My question is how can I get a mirror edge on a knife while sharpening? Is all in the strapping or finer grit stones or practice? Bonus question have you ever ruined a knife sharping it?
DCA, I only got into knives just over 2 years ago. When did the knife hobby really explode? It seems like it may have been in the last 3-5 years with so many new companies popping up. What are some of the key moments, innovations, important companies, models, etc over time that stick out that got us to where we are today?
Great questions!
This will need it's own dedicated episode for DCA to answer, since there's so many parts involved in this explosion of blade popularity - one being the UA-cam gear/blade reviewers.
To me it was the chinese companies stepping up their game. Meanwhile they offer really nice knifes on the market that make it hard for US or european made knifes to keep up with regarding the prices. just go and check Real Steel, Civivi, Kizer, CJRB, QSP, sencut...
And you could add that you can strike a Flintstone with carbon steel and make a spark
I learned how to sharpen knives with a 1095 Esee. I prefer super steels now, but I still like carbon steels, and I think they're great when it comes to learning how to sharpen and maintain an edge on your knife.
DCA, the Para3 LW hit the market at about $97 or $98
I paid $97 for my Para 3 LW
Roxon KS2E: Glass breaker, blade, can opener, huge scissors and all locking implements..
Glas breaker and can opener are on several sanrenmu knifes in the 20 dollar range.
I think Boker sells them as the TechTool series too
Hey DCA - Loving the recent innovation in the knife world, it feels like not that long ago that "titanium frame lock" was the answer to every question. In the spirit trying new(old) things I am looking for a modern Barlow. Hoping for a single blade pattern with a strong halfstop. Ideally under $100, with a clean elegant design and modern materials. Thanks!
DCA,
Most of your answer on opening cans is good. The correct answer for the actual can opener is the P-38 can opener. It can be carried on your key ring or in a wallet. I’ve had one on my key ring For over two decades. I find that style of can opener much faster and easier than can openers on multi-tools or Swiss Army knives.
Hi David,
What are your favorite top ten knives to slice cheese? Is a narrow/skinny blade or a tall/wide blade work better?
Victorinox Rescue tool has a glass braker (and glass saw) one hand opening blade and a can opener.
I am a fan of Victorinox products, owning dozens of them. I have been interested in the Venture Pro, especially the protruding full tang spoon carver and hex driver hole along with the friction fire divot. The Venture Pro seems to be more of a light duty camp or kitchen knife and not a rugged bushcraft knife. Is there anything else out there that has these features with a stronger scandi grind blade, maybe in 1095 or D2?
Hi DCA and Thomas ! Thx for your always great work ! I have a question for you about my Bushlore : since it's a carbon steel, it rusts. But my problem is that, despite me cleaning the blade and storing it in a dry place out of the sheath, I cannot clean the tang of the blade that is pined. And god, that tang is rusty. Any solution to prevent the rust from separating the blade from the handle on the next use ?
Sanrenmu has a lot of knives with can opener and glass breaker, like the 7116.
David C: on a non-knife (gasp) note, the Ohsay can opener uses 1008 carbon steel for its "blade". USA and vet made, $18. Best cutting can opener that I have ever used, and I'm 76.
P38 is easier to carry every day. I have one given to me from my wife's grandfather from his time in Vietnam. It still works great, and I forget I am even carrying it until I need it.
Hey DCA. the Boker tech tool 2 has it all. Knife center has it in stock
I found my first folding knife on the beach it was a Smith and Wesson junk knife but it had a liner lock which was cool at the time but I had no idea how to work it it took me like 10 minutes to figure out how to close it.
Hey DCA, I know I know but I have a question about knife sharpening. I have watched your series on it and even purchased the Spyderco sharpening system from the site but I am still a little fuzzy on how I can keep the tip of my knife as sharp as it was new. Any tips on keeping my tip sharp?
Just bought my first knife a few days ago. Should be arriving in a couple days!
Be careful! He may send for his extended family.
I can stop at 1!... I said that myself about 300 knives back...😂🦉
Awesome! Which one did you go for if you don’t mind me asking?
@@tecnotrog1 😂😂
@@dertodesking8379 I got the cjrb ria!
My grandmother gave me my first pocket knife . A pre Swiss army type in mother of pearl.
Glasbreaking can opener: A LM with a bitholding slot with glass breaking KN flat bit. There are models wuth 154CM, S30V or the Magnacut Arc.
But for sure you go better with dedicated knife and additional tool like David‘s card.
Leatherman makes a glass breaker bit for it's 2D bit drivers. So any Leatherman that has the driver and a can opener will work, they all have good blades.
Leatherman (Wave or other one) + replacement bit with Tungsten Carbide Glass Breaking tip on one end and a 1/4" Screwdriver on the other is example of the knife with a can opener and a glass breaker)
So we are going to the beach in May. What would be a good knife for EDC in a beach environment.
Thank you nice video. My first question? Can you please recommend a small fixed blade knife that has the shape of say a Cody Warren cr2.5 from Esee, or the operator by winkler knives for around $50.00ish. Haven’t ever had a tactical day in my life , but I like these shapes and use them hard for ranch and other outdoor use. P.s. a lil serration at the back of the edge is also nice.
Still works indoors as well. Most of my kitchen knives are in carbon steel.
For puertoricanboy100: a good fixed blade with an exposed area at the rear of the tang. They often are configured for crushing or scraping on many models like Esee 3,4,5 or Ontario RAT 5. You can buy a handful of p38's or p51's ( I prefer the p51's) and stash them all kinds of places, put one on your key ring, put one in a wallet; whatever, but they are cheap and effective. Plus they can be used for more than opening cans.
I have both versions of the Civivi Praxis. Which lock is stronger, button lock or liner lock?
Hey DCA, I really like the feel of my CRKT CEO flipper. I would really like to get an edc fixed blade with a similar profile. What would you recommend?
Mr Anderson, that Lt Wright Gen 5 on the table got me wondering. What is your favorite relatively inexpensive Kephart style knife? I recently bought a Ka-bar Becker Kephart and find that while I love the look of the knife and the fit and finish of the Ka-bar is good, the scales are a bit too thin for me. The LT Wright knives are a bit out of my price range. Something less than $100 is my budget. The Condor Kephart CTK 247 looks good as does the super inexpensive Ontario Old Hickory Fish and Game. I actually have a couple of Old Hickory knives that I inherited from my parents and their scales have always fit my hands pretty well. Feel free to make comparisons with the higher priced options, I'd like to know how you think they compare.
Can you provide data on Puma knife steel properties (and comparisons)? I cannot seem to find!
I have a Kershaw Drivetrain in each of my vehicles. I wanted something visit effective to leave in my vehicle that I wouldn't cry over if it got lost. If I was going to carry a rescue knife every day I'd probably go with Hogue or Benchmade or possibly even Spyderco. I carry a PM2 in s90v currently and I love the edge I can achieve with it. Spyderco is a great American made company. I also carry a CJRB Pyrite in s90v. S90V is an outstanding steel for edge retention.
DCA! My man! How could you overlook the Byrd knives? Easily the best option for sub-$100 Spydercos.
I would like to try an EDC fixed blade to carry horizontal cross draw. I have found a couple of candidates within my specs, but I feel there must be more and wondered if you would help. I would prefer a blade in the 2.5 to 3 inch range and not too thick (about .125 or less). An overall length of 6.5 or less. Budget in the $100 range and not made in China. The Esee Izula is an obvious choice, though it's thicker than I would like. I also like the Brisa Necker 70, but would like to make sure I'm not missing some options. I would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks.
*Most serious question*
If you did not have your trusty carcus splitter to split a carcus, what would you use for all of your carcus splitting needs?
When is the salt satin blade paramilitary 2 going to release? I want to buy it so much.
Hey DCA, in your explanation regarding fixed blades in carbon steel, you seems to go toward the explanation that it's more because of tradition. Is there a big difference between tough stainless (like Sandvik familly /AEB-L) and regular carbon steel (O1, A2, 1095, etc)? Thanks!
(1) $ ouch ! (2) Buck 110 (3) a good Barlow (4) Chris Reeve Sebenza (5) switchblade fer kix
Hey DCA and Thomas, I have a small collection of Victorinox SAKs but was wondering do any of the other brands swiss army style knives offer anything more than the Victorinox versions, i.e better steels, better tools better ergonomics? And are there any that you would say are worthy of adding to a collection?
Which leads me to my second question, I own a JWK Midnight Jack, which is very much a collectors piece. I know knives generally don’t hold their value but are there any knives that do or any knife collections where the sum of the whole is greater than the parts?
I carry 12c27 or 14c28n more often than not.
I like how easy carbon steel takes a razor edge
I appreciate high carbon steel in fixed blade knives for its toughness and ease of sharpening. But mostly I grab my Fällkniven in COS whenever I go out camping and stuff, because of the stain resistance. This steel is also really easy to sharpen, but more resistant to rust. I wouldn’t beat on a knife in M390 for example, simply to avoid having to sharpen out chips and nicks. It stays sharper longer, that’s true, but you still need to put in quite some effort of getting it from dull back to sharp (not sharpish, but sharp!).
Hi David,
What five knives do you most want to see JoeX test?
DCA, I know you get a Zillion requests and questions each week. But, I would find it stellar if sometimes a knifes balance is commened. A slug under a stone can understand that a SAK is handle heavy. A one bladed folder are often quite unbalanced too, but why? Got a Micarta Button Civivi Elementum 2 in my hand yesterday and I had a stupid fantasy about it being a bit more balanced. No, it was still handle heavy, despite its quite tall blade profile. Makes them feel clunky in the hand compared to a fixie or the the nimble/humble Opinel. :) /Tom from Sweden
I'm a fan of Hawkbill, Wharncliff, Sheepsfoot, and Karambit knives. How about a buyers' guide (from Budget to Halo) on those knives?
Would love to hear your take on what blade shapes are best for what tasks etc. At least your take on that. Like what would you grab a sheepsfoot or wharncliff for etc. You could expand on that by going into grinds if you wanted to get into the weeds lol.
Hey DCA, I’ve been a pretty avid collector for the past few years and I feel like being left handed I’m always on the hunt for the next lefty knife. I have a ton of benchmades, a few left handed spydercos & a bunch of budget left handed friendly models (vosteed, civivi etc). I finally got myself small & large left handed Sebenza. I was wondering do you know if there are any other higher end brands that make a real dedicated left handed knife like my Chris Reeve knives? Help us lefties! 🙏🏼
Any leatherman that has a can opener and the bit driver can be fitted with the carbide bit that will serve as a good glass breaker. Personaly (if money is not an issue) i would go for the arc.
My first knife was a Barlow bought off of a card in a hardware store. That was around 1968
Hello David, I am currently most interested in automatic knives, which are perfectly legal in my state of Colorado, but I am not able to purchase them from Knife Center, because of some inexplicable shipping rules. Are there efforts in play to correct this? Thanks, Mark
First time knife buyer? Just buy a Swiss Army knife. There's a reason Victorinox is the biggest knife maker in the world. It's because they make excellent products at a reasonable price. And yes, any knife is only as good as it is sharp, so sharpening skills are far more important than exotic crucible steels. If you can't sharpen your knife, you may as well not have a knife, because all you have is a fancy stick in your hand.
Why non-stainless steel outdoors? Because it generally is tough and sharpens easily to a very fine edge.
I will be the first to note that while I do prefer a stainless knife outdoors, I also have no difficulty carrying and using a non-stainless hatchet or axe. If you think about it, most lawn and tree care tools are made of non-stainless steel. Stainless steel has only existed for about 110 years. One reason I want to get a non-stainless, hand-forged knife is because sometimes I like to play historical re-enactor in the woods.
I 1,000,000% agreed David everybody if you have a knife in your pocket, you need to know how to sharpen it once you get good at sharpen it. You need to know how to put it on a ruby stone, a ceramic stone to strap it back to life instead of sharpening every time it gets tall, so yes, David, you are absolutely right I prefer 14c28n and 154cm also nitro v because those steals are really good at returning to a razor sharp edge with dropping on a ruby stone or a ceramic rod I have plenty of super steals. I love them, but they’re not as easy as those three steals mentioned.
What would Thomas recommend for a truck knife?
If I’m not mistaken a lot of outdoor fixed blade knives are also carbon steel to use with fire rods yes no? 🤷♂️
Looking for Christmas gift knives that will be either machine engraved or laser engraved, am I better off put engraving on handles or blade itself? TIA
Hey DCA, I’m going camping soon and would like to pick up a nice fixed blade to complement my esee izula. Ideally a good all-rounder (wood processing, fire building, food prep, etc). What is your personal favorite recommendation? Thanks :)
The Republic from Cold Steel isn’t bad and a competitor has them for $169 right now sorry KC. Not bad for an American made bushcrafty type knife. I know Cold Steel you think Taiwan , not this one.
Need a glass breaker, a broken spark plug. We were taught this at a rescue training. I JB welded mine in a short piece of pvc.
Sharpening: I was tough by my uncle on a double sided stone and the back side of a belt looped around my foot. It always shaved hair. The real knife bug hit me a few years ago, now I have more knives and sharpening tools than one person should have. Retirement has gotten me into so many hobbies it borders on mania. I see something I want to learn about and I go overboard.
DCA: Question why is the "reversed tanto" balde shape used so frequently? Maybe I'm splitting hairs but the use of "revservsed tanto" seems to miss the edge geometry of a tanto with 2 differently angled edges. Thank you.
If you need a glass breaker and a can opener, why not get a p51 or similar can opener. You can put it on your keychain or just in your pocket. Then you have a huge variety of folders to choose from that have a glass breaker.
I agree with DCA sharpening is most important in the knife hobby. Doesn’t matter if you get a knife in some ultra rare unobtanium steel and find out you can’t sharpen it, you’re going to have a bad time.
Yes, and especially learning how to free-hand sharpen, will allow users to maintain their edges with a diamond pocket sharpener.
a dull knife is dangerous.
DCA & Thomas - What blade steel or material has the best edge retention for everyday use such as opening Amazon boxes, cutting some plastic ties, opening mail, etc.
Essentially, what would I have to sharpen the least frequently?
Kershaw drivetrain is underrated budget knife, cool shape
Para3 LW used to be $105 a few years ago on KC
After watch Micheal emlers video what is a tactical knife I’d like to pass this question to the great Dca. Please take your time answering this one. Is it simply a marketing term or is there something there.
Hi Daivd,
What do you think are five good folding knives that are related to guns in some way? For example, Glock makes a fixed blade, etc.
Boker Kalashnikov, Hogue, Berretta.
@@rnrsteev Cool.
hey DCA, a question from the far far away land of India for you..
My nephew is turning 18 next year and I would like to give him his first serious knife for that occasion (not from the most serious section of course). Last month for his 17th, i gave him a Leatherman kbx. The next one should be in the 50-100$ mark and a solid companion knife. Could you please suggest a solid folder or small EDC fixed blade for him?
Considerations:
1. Indian knife laws forbid spring / assisted knives so no autos or assisted opening knives. Blade length (not overall length) cannot exceed 9", however I would prefer something smaller around 3-4" blade length at max. I still think 18 year olds can be a little too "excited" for their own good.
2. Also, this might be ambitious at the price point, but made in USA would be preferred.
The reason for this early planning is so that i can ship it to my friend in Texas and pick it up when i come to your country in a couple of months.
Thanks in advance.
Lol, that Lansky plug! 😂🤭
About the can opener with glassbreaker, I'm a fireman and carry a leatherman charge +, that has a can opener and theres a bit flat driver one side and glass breaker on the other. Used bot already 😅
@DCA
Have you used RPM9? I enjoy it, but I haven't tried a lot of more exotic steels. I can't tell whether it's worth the $$$. I'm tempted to buy Magnacut, but I need hard data before I spend on something like that.
(I'm glad that Thomas is back. No offense to the other Toms)
Are there any budget alternatives to the Svord Carcass Splitter? It seems to be inexplicably well-suited for a vast number of most-serious situations. Are there enough Carcass Splitter competitors for a Beat The Icon episode?
Hi David,
The Skull Head Fighting knife and the hand guard comes close to the shape of a dog bone handle. Are there any knives with dogbone handle shapes? No, my dog is not in market for a knife!
CRKT makes a knife called the cross bone and one called the jumbone,A larger version
Burr removal is number one!! ☝🏼 Learn to properly remove the burr on your edges. Next to actual sharpening (removing material) minimizing and then removing the dreaded burr, is what makes the difference in sharp, to SHARP!
Para 3 LW were 80...for a couple of weeks. Then jumped to 100.
I do indeed still use the can opener.
DCA and Thomas: Could you please explain why "super steel" knife prices have jumped up so drastically in the last year, year and a half? It seems like Benchmade and Spyderco are pricing themselves right out of the market. I would love a new Spyderco Paramilitary 2 Salt (CPM-MagnaCut) but $220 seems way over-priced to me. Help me make sense of these prices and edit as necessary to not tick off the manufacturers.
Personally i think its best to just have a knife with a glass breaker (any striking edge really) i use gerber fast 06. And then keep a p38 military style can opener on my key chain or tucked in wallet. Also can use knife frame to open bottle caps.
Hey DCA, Carbon steel is more easily sharpened than stainless, that's a reason to have one for camping or outdoor use.
✌️
This super steel arms race is good for me, I’m still perfectly happy with good ol D2 and it’s brought their prices down.
Your advice on sharpening knives well, rather than look for the do-it-all is very good. But based on that, would not then the disposable blade knives end up being the best buy?
Hey DCA, I'm finishing grad school in three months and am looking for a folding knife to celebrate. I want something American made with titanium handles for ~$500. Do you have any recommendations?
