Regarding the 1st question about losing so many expensive knives: With respect, I think you need to deal with HOW you are losing your items. Replacing them doesn't fix the problem but rather deals with the symptoms of it. Also, knives - not super steels - have been around longer than you and I have been. The best steel I own is 154cm and it has done everything and then some. Taking care of your tools including being aware of where they are is important; call it responsible knife ownership. Not being rude but want to impress a point in brevity. Good luck on your hunt!
I'm not new to carrying a knife, but this video hit home for me as I am new to the collecting / premium aspect. For almost 20 years I've carried a $10 S&W Extreme Ops. It's lost just about all of the screws holding it together, I figured it was time to retire. After a bunch of "research" I ordered a Spyderco PM2 and was blown away at the quality I was missing out on. Since then, I have added 6 more to my rotation from varying price points. My question is about pricing, but not regarding quality / features / etc. I seem to find that most manufacturers will sell direct as well as through 3rd parties. I have noticed pricing is usually cheaper through a 3rd party than directly from the manufacturer's point of sale. One such purchase was a SOG Terminus XR LTE, where I also noticed the blade markings are different as well. Special editions and specific releases aside, do some manufacturers build different versions of the same model (like "outlet" stores of clothing brands)?
Some do, for example you often see a patent pending and a patented version, or multiple different runs of the same model, and some have a cheaper version of a premium knife, like it is mentioned in the Sebenza alternative section. But there are lots of fakes and lookalikes of expensive knives floating about with widely varying quality.
I'm a working knife kind of guy, no pocket candy for me, and my Buck 112 slim select is my favorite knife. Holds an amazing edge for quite a while, light in the pocket and comfortable to hold. However, while I can close it one handed it requires some hand acrobatics. I'd love a similar knife size wise, edge retention, relative cost, but one that is more one hand friendly. I tend toward more classic style and don't need anything fancy, just one that will work day in day out. Thanks for the great content!
from a steel aspect, 420HC steel is a very very tough steel with relatively low edge retention, and a small grain structure so when you put an edge on it, the edge feels extremely sharp. I don't know how important the stainless aspect is to you or which way you lean in your use (if edge retention is more important to you than toughness or if toughness is more important,) but since you like the extreme sharpenss you get on 420HC steel, you may really like VG10 steel. it's very stainless, takes an extremely sticky sharp polished edge, and is relatively easy to sharpen. It would be a medium step down in toughness, a medium step up in edge retention, and about equal in stainless ability. If stainless isn't that important to you (maybe it doesn't get water, sweat or other liquids on it often) you may want to consider cru-wear. (That is my personal favorite right now) very easy to sharpen, takes an insane edge, would be a very tiny drop in toughness (so still very tough) compared to what you have, would be a significant jump up in edge retention and a smallish drop in stainless ability. Not sure how you feel about Spyderco knives or how much you are looking to spend, but if you can wait a bit and have some cash to burn, you may really really like the cru wear spyderco para 3 with micarta handles. It's still in the pre-order phase on the knife center website, but it probably won't be too much longer until it comes out. The compression lock is very very easy to close one hand, I think micarta scales look great and still utilitarian, it's close in size to your 112 and that cru-wear... well like I said it's my favorite right now. On the more budget end 14c28n steel will perform very very closely to the 420HC you have now... something like a Civiv flipper, easy to 1 hand open and close, about the same price point to where you are now, and about the same size too.. hope all this helps, cheers! Edit: I missed the fact that your post clearly stated that you were looking at about the same price point, you may want to tuck the spyderco suggestion away for a later time. I've never owned a civivi, but they are well liked.
Dave For many years I have carried a Kershaw Needs Work, and I loved it. Sadly, it has been lost. So my question is, what modern knife should I replace it with? Criteria is it much have a Warncliffe blade, and modern high end steel would be a plus. Assisted opening or auto is also a must. I have the Kersahw Launch 13, but it is bigger than what I want for an everyday carry. The Needs Work is my ideal EDC size, and the robust, thicker blade is a must.Thanks a million in advance for any suggestions John

Re: expensive knife misplacer, why not try a strong lanyard attached to your belt and to knife? I know it may get snagged so maybe a retractable lanyard?
In wintery climates with snow on the ground, a lanyard is especially useful if a knife is dropped in a snow bank (while hiking, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, etc). Without a lanyard, the knife is basically gone, it just disappears into the depths of the snow ...good luck ever finding before Spring. But with a lanyard (one foot or so long), when you start brushing away the snow in the area where it might have been dropped, the lanyard will trail the drop of the knife, leaving a tail of sorts leading to the knife's position. Actually quite easy to find, follow and then retrieve the dropped knife. Lanyards make good sense when travelling or working in snow covered areas when using a knife.
In a tight space I caught my first Native 5 Salt from my pocket on some production waste I was lifting into a compactor. Now it spends its time not rusting in a landfill somewhere. At least it's not lonely. Several weeks later I believe I did it again with a CJRB. A simple retractable lanyard attaching belt to knife would have likely prevented this. [ kicks self ]

I don't know when I will need mine but I'll need it eventually for sure, it's just a matter of time. I'm 52, I had my first Swiss army knife at age 6 and never go out without a knife. It's one of the oldest tools of humanity if not the oldest, people who don't use knives end up being helped by people like me, so many times I can't remember.
Though I do use mine at work frequently, while fishing and in the kitchen, I've only been in an oh-crap scenario once where I needed mine. I was carrying a Manix 2 XL at the time. Fortunately all I was forced to do was pull it from my pocket and roll the blade out. It very possibly saved my brother and I from a very ugly scenario. I made sure to get at least a basic level of training after that incident.
Hey David - thank you guys for running the most informative and classy knife channel on UA-cam. Question: I've long been a fan of 14C28N steel and that's most of what i have. If i were to move up into powder steels, which ones are the most similar to 14C28 in characteristics? There are so many to learn about.
I think so. There are times a traditional knife makes a lot of sense. Often times I carry a modern knife and Swiss Army for those times you need a knife but some might be put off by a knife the flips open. A SAK or a Case doesn't scare people because it was something dad or grandfather carried.
My favorite knives are the Spyderco Shaman, and the Svord peasant. One is very modern and the other as basic as possible. All knives are relevant, though some steels are not
Of course they are. People can buy and carry whatever knife floats their boat, but in reality most of them can accomplish their daily cutting tasks with any small sharp blade. Most people could get by just fine carrying nothing but a utility knife.
Hey DCA I’ve been carrying a Spyderco Native chief for the past few weeks and I’ve come across a problem… it’s a larger than average knife so I was looking to get a companion knife something I can use when discretion is the name of the game. Preferably something in the 3 inch range with a Lockback or slip joint. Bonus points for no pocket clip!
I think I've lost 3 knives in my lifetime, all before the age of 14. That's when I got my Swiss Army Knife that I bought with my own money, and it's still in my pocket 40 years later. (although it's had every spring, one blade, and the scales replaced). As to 'why do you need a knife' - that specific knife is what I call a 75% knife - it does 100% of what you need it for 75% well - it's not the best cutting tool - until you don't have another one. It's not the best bottle/can opener until you don't have another one. It's not the best screwdriver, pair of pliers, etc . . .until you don't have anything else except that SAK. I've used it to trim my nails, fix my car, get a car unstuck from the mud (cutting tree branches for traction), fix glasses, and so forth. It will never do a job as well as a dedicated tool for that function - but it will always do a reasonable job in a pinch. In the last 10 years I've started carrying a supplemental knife (or two, or three) that I can always say is a dedicated cutting tool that holds an edge better than my SAK - but that SAK will always have a spot in my pocket. (Plus, everyone might wonder why you have a knife until something happens and they ask "Does anyone have a knife?" . . . )
Man do I feel your pain about losing knives in reclining couches. Lost my Gen 1 Endura for years. Movers found it when they took the couch apart. Love that knife, so glad to have it back. (Still has the pocket clip!)
Like you said, "collecting" is a perfectly justifiable reason. I have more knives than I will ever carry, some of which I bought for no reason other than I liked how they looked or had a colorway I liked. For instance, I am a sucker for the red and black combo and immediately picked up the Kershaw Livewire that just came out with that combo. Been looking at them for a while, but could not really "justify" it, but as soon as I saw that one, I had to add it to the collection.
Paraframe was one of my first. I hate it. Had no edge on the tip and whole edge was dull. Had to sharpen it and put a tip on it. Worse yet the frame lock didn't actually move enough to lock it open. Could still close it. So was basically a slip joint.
DCA, I need a suggestion too! I've been carrying a ZT 0562 CF in M390 for like 10 years and I love it a lot. I like its design, the size works for me and the steel is good. I use it for everything, cutting some wood, ropes and wires, preparing food and even (please forgive me) prying up some stuff. Recently, though, I find myself in very dusty and sandy places quite a lot, it kills me to hear the sand in the bearings. I take the thing apart for cleaning way more than I'd want to. Can you suggest me another capable folder that won't suffer from sand? I'm also looking into a fixed blade instead of a folder, but that's another story. Thank you!

I lost my favorite neck knife in 5,000 acres of forest land. Luckily my dogs are trained for object search (they'll find anything that doesn't belong). Two weeks later they focused on a pile of duff alongside a tree stump, my knife! Which now lives above my bed for opening cookies😊
@deathbytheblade6757 dogs are damn fast, I prefer a long stick to keep them at a distance and a clubbing stick in my dominant hand. Some a-hole left 2 Cane Corso to starve on our mountain, pretty scary. They took livestock from the newcomers downhill but I only saw them from a distance

Hello DCA I have been on the hunt for the perfect knife for me for years, I have fluctuated back and forth from folders to fixed blades and from heavy to lightweight. Trying to find what works for me. This cycle repeats until eventually I give up and revert back to a simple carry like a Case knife. What strategy should I use to finally find that balance between fixed and folder and heavy and lightweight. I'm looking for a knife that has the capability of a heavyweight knife but in a lightweight package. Either folder or fixed. What do you think would be the best option/options. Thank you!
Hi DCA, Seth and Thomas. Thank you for the great content. I either need a magnacut machete, or a very good advice. Please help. I am looking for a mid sized machete, which can hold an edge. I often use it to clear my way in an equatorial forest, and those leisurely walks can last about 4 hours before I sit down and strop. I have used a Gerber Parang machete in the past, and I loved the shape. So something like that, if it’s possible will be much appreciated. Thank you! The cheaper the better. Please nothing over 250 dollars, hence no magnacut machete! 😂
I'm new to steel and to your channel. Can you please do an FAQ-style video about knife steels? I would really appreciate it, and here's why: I don't understand how a knife can be tough but then also lose its edge... it seems like a tough knife would hold onto its edge. I also get lost on your "new knife of the week" videos because I've basically never heard of any of these types of steels. This kind of video would help me when I watch your other videos lol
From what I understand, toughness is an expression of how much force a steel can take before chipping or breaking. Edge retention is essentially a function of how hard the steel is, so how easily abrasion deforms the apex of an edge. It's a balancing act between edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance. Generally the harder a steel can be made to be, the more brittle, less tough it is. This is why we tend to see blades intended for impact and able to withstand being twisted out of cuts ( like machetes ) having less focus on edge retention and corrosion resistance. There are more exotic, higher cost steels intended to withstand impacts but also sport high edge retention and they tend to have less corrosion resistance focus. Magnacut is currently considered the most well balanced steel for good retention, high corrosion resistance and high toughness. I find for a blade that doesn't get much abuse or impact force, steels more focused on edge retention and corrosion resistance are best for my use cases and environment. Once I learned to sharpen and strop, I found some of the stainless steels with less edge retention focus worked just fine and were far more affordable than their high edge retention counterparts. A good beater steel like Nitro-V or 14C28N is fairly inexpensive, holds and edge well enough for most everyday cutting tasks and are pretty tough. If you don't let the edge become so dull only a sharpening will bring the fine apex back, they can be stopped back to a very sharp state pretty easily.
I love pocket clips, but they have been responsible for me losing knives on more than one occasion when doing very physical activities. Carrying it deep in your pocket isn’t always pleasant, but you won’t lose any more knives. There is no easy answer.

I really like my Ruike knives. Very good price/quality ratio and I EDC them in regular rotation with my Civvis, Cold Steels and Benchmades. I have the P-801, 108, 831, 865 and the Hussar. Not the "best current trend" knife snob steel, but the heat treat is good and they stay sharp for a good amount of time despite rigorous use. The Jager is a great fixed blade, the sheath is bulky as hell though.
Hey DCA! Enthusiastic viewer from the UK here (where things are a little different when it comes to knives...). I'm curious, do you know of any British manufacturers or makers that would be worth checking out? I ask for a couple of reasons: a) obviously good to support the home team, b) I imagine a British maker would be very focused on our sub-3", folding, non-locking regs and c) there was a time when British Steel was famous world-wide (esp. Sheffield steel). Tbh I'm not sure if it was actually any good, but we sold massive amounts of cutlery and then, well, just seemed to stop (1970's?) Thanks!

A question for KniFAQ - are there many options for a Knife-Prybar type of folding knife? I have owned the Gerber Quadrant for two years and have found the blade shape to be incredibly useful. It came in super clutch when a door lock wouldn’t flip open during a wedding day. I was able to pry the lock to it’s open position to allow the wedding party to enter the ceremony. Needless to say, I love the blade shape. Any others out there?

What is the best cross bar locking knife for a daily working knife? I’m an auto mechanic and I carry a blade at all times my current rotation ranges from an s110v pm3 bugout s30v to my manix 2 15v and shaman m4 I use all my knives constantly but looking to pickup a new benchmade but thought I’d pitch the idea to your faq thoughts. Lmk what you think best all around cross bar lock knife for daily use in a variety of tasks. I know where to drop the knife and pick up the air hammer so general tasks feels appropriate
Serious Question: I'm a smaller fixed blade guy for EDC. Mine is an older inexpensive Condor Kephart that I modded to mimic my son's Izula. Folders are so very popular and I appreciate the appeal (fidgety and smaller.) But I just prefer the utility in fixed blade EDC. What are a couple of your ideal fixed blade EDC's in the sub$100 range and sub$200 that would convince folder lovers?

A friend once asked me why I carry a pocket knife (I have carried a knife since I was 10 years old). "Is it for self-defense? " I told him no, that isn't my primary motivation, although it can be used for that. I carry a knife because it's a handy, useful tool. My coworkers used to give me a little good natured ribbing because I insisted on keeping my knives razor sharp. I always replied that a dull knife isn't good for much.
I was never into them but recently got the launch 18 and love the little thing. I gotta get a livewire sometime too. But the bel air has been a wanted item in the community for a long time.

I love my Kershaw Layup. Esge retention is great with the D2. Super slicey due to the flat grind. The assisted opening takes some getting used to but i like it. No play in the blade while its locked up. And it was 54 bucks, which is what i wanted. Im hard on my knives, and use the crap out of them. Theyre not "man jewlery" like so many these days with their 400 dollar carbon fiber larper extreme
We all heard the horror story of the guy who lost two Sebenza and Duas, and I would die if that happened to me. My question to you is what lanyard and/or other retention device would you recommend to secure your knife both in pocket and while in use so you won’t mind carrying high dollar knives? Thank you!
That Nano looks cool. But it looks exactly like my Lionsteel Myto with the free spinning pivot on both sides. I took two torx screwdrivers and COULD NOT get that thing apart(with tools that I use to take all my knives apart). I’m going to have to spend money on a fatter bit driver to get more torque on it. Which pisses me off. A knife that’s hard to take apart and clean is not a good knife in my opinion. Keep that in mind if you wanna by a Nano/ Myto.
Hi DCA and gang - Back when I was transitioning from flea market knives to brands, I could only afford very budget knives, the BM Griptilian was the iconic knife everyone talked about. Years later later and with more disposable income, I of course had to get one which I've had for a while now. Occasionally finds its way into my pocket and I do quite enjoy it, but I'm thinking maybe something similar and more updated would be better for EDC. I like the crossbar lock, overall utility of the blade, etc. The handle is a bit thick and tends to tear up the pants a little though. Any suggestions for something similar, preferably without a flipper tab? Thanks!
Why do I have knives (I rarely have only one)? 1) To slice things. 2) To manipulate/ retrieve/etc. small items. 3) To open boxes and those otherwise about impossible to open plastic product packages. 4) Potential last ditch up close & personal self defense weopon. 5) It's intelligent to be prepared for various situations. To have what you may need. I also carry a cigarette lighter wrapped with a little duct tape for instant tinder, a multitool, and a bright flashlight at all times. The duct tape can also be used to secure paper or cloth as a bandage, or be used as a tourniquet. A knife is just a tool. All tools have a purpose, and most could be used to harm somebody. Are tools bad, now? It used to irritate me when people would ask me that question, but now I take it as an opportunity to share the value of knives and other edc gear. If someone does not want to carry a knife, they don't have to do so.

Lost my travel companion, LLBean/Wenger SAK (about 1968-1993), I think in a NY State motel room's sheets. Never got over it. I have freely and under duress given knives up or away, but that was the only one truly lost.

Hello there KC crew. I find consistently good heat treatments come out of Spyderco. I'm interested in getting an opinion on 2 or 3 other mass production manufacturers who you feel are putting out consistently good heat treatments. Not sure if this has been asked. Is CPM MagnaCut good for kitchen knives? Can MagnaCut be the future end-all be-all blade steel for kitchen knives? I'm looking for a new kitten knife set that that requires little maintenance and rarely needs to be sharpened.
You can try searching for keywords like “recurve” or “hawkbill” to get some ideas and see what’s out there. Hawkbills are very curved usually, I think, but maybe there’s a blade out there that uses the name but with a more subtle curve. Recurves might get you closer to something that fits what you’re thinking of.
Victorinox hunter xt, 111 mm, normal blade, recurbed blade and saw. Big and heavy duty, not a city edc... Or the Parachute, just the recurbed blade (they don't produce it nowadays, only in the second hand market)

Here's a most serious question for you: When I was new to the knife world there was a lot of puzzling new jargon, but it was obvious to me what a dive knife must be - it's a tactical knife you'd take to a sleazy bar. Everyone should be a knife person. I use my Spyderco PM2 daily for opening packages, cutting twine, scraping off stickers, envelopes, picking stuff out of my teeth, cutting food, taking out splinters, cutting zip ties, as a mini screw driver, to push the little button on electronics to pull out the SDCard, cutting off price tags, when fishing, for electronics projects, to break down cardboard boxes, to scrape gunk off my clothing, cut my nails, pick crap out of my nails, mark things like boards, cut pieces of paper, sharpening pencils, removing staples, holding money(like a money clip), opening bottles, to cut loose threads on yoru clothes, seperating plastic parts and opening things like battery compartments, stripping/cutting wires, to get knots out of rope, just to fidget with, getting gum out of carpet, making s'more sticks, whittling wood (I dont really use mine for this but you can), using it as a paper weight, cutting pills, cutting 550 paracord or straps, I've used it to open keyrings, to pop those packing air filled pillow thingies (i do this more often than probably anything else), trimming 3d printed parts, to cut those plastic model trees that hold board game parts, i trim a lot of plastic pieces....the list is endless
How about knives under $50 and $100 with flush mount, recessed screw pocket clips? Bonus points for knives with blockout plates in the event of reverse pocket clips.
I live in Australia so this is quite a common question, i have my leatherman which people are little more understanding of but still. Easiest way to explain is say i use it for work, i open packaged and send them, so need a knife to do that. Breaking down boxes and all sorts. Also to carry you need “a legal reason” so stupid
My only Sebenza is a Land 910 Plus, but I liked it so much, I bought a second one in case I lost the first. At that point, I was still mourning the loss of my Victorinox Cadet Alox. I found that Cadet again in December 2023, and it probably gets the most pocket time now that it's returned like the prodigal son.
“Do you have your wallet, your keys, and your knife?” My father asked me this question every time we left the house. This was well before the smartphone. These three things were what I was expected to bring with me everywhere, everyday. It was always better to have and not need, than need and not have. I now carry a SAK huntsman and Gerber suspension everyday.
@@CadillacDriver It sounds worse than it is...that was probably over the course of 10 years. The first sbenza was the 21, not current 31, and Grayman hasn't made folders for a handful of years. All were lost hunting with them clipped on the pocket.
Hello guys. I may or may not work at a place that does not allow a pocket knife. Or, from what I can see, nothing longer than 2 inches. But I don't want something 2 inches. Is there a knife, when in the pocket, does NOT look like a knife in the pocket but more like a pen in the pocket? Something that would not get noticed but still do tough work when needed.
Maxace Peregrine seems like a perfect fit for that first question. **VERY** Sebenza-esque, starting at $298. Not American made, don’t know if Knife Center even carries them, but if you’re looking for a $300-ish Sebenza replacement, I’d say that’s the one.
Knife FAQ Question: Recently I received my new Kershaw 6105 and decided to try using it without the pocket clip since I usually just keep my pocket knife…ummm…in my pocket. I must say after about an hour of use without the clip installed, I reinstalled the pocket clip. I didn’t realize how much that clip helps in positioning my fingers outside of the blade path when ‘flicking it closed. Anyone else have an opinion on removing a pocket clip?
I took the pocket clip off of my Spyderco Para 3. I just found it to be more comfortable to use without the clip. I also found it to be bulkier than some of my 3" blade Benchmade's. And so I stopped pocket carrying it. It now lives in a Tactical Tailor Admin Pouch that is attached to my Kifaru E&E bag...
I have a serious question that seeks to bind our modern era to the historical traditions of yore: Back in medieval times, they would to use an "eating knife" when showing up to a dinner party (things like forks hadn't been invented yet). Also, many things they did were concerned with personal honor and status. So, what do you think would make a good modern eating knife? My guess for parameters would be a max budget of around $450, fixed blade, and easy to sharpen (feel free to adjust these parameters as you see fit).
Anyone know where I can buy phosphorus bronze washers for knives. I'd like to install some in a pilar I have, for instance. I don't know what id/od/thickness I'd need though. Is there anyone in the aftermarket offering these? A filter by knife option a plus but any help is appreciated.

If you like Gerber knives and you want something better than their current offerings, you need to look into the world of vintage Gerber Made in USA or even the first generation Gerber International Made in Taiwan knives, from about 20-30 years ago. There's still plenty of them out there on the secondary market. Another good option in current production is the Spartan Harsey Talos folder. It's the spiritual descendant of the original Gerber International Harsey Air Ranger (not the current production model), updated to modern materials.

Interesting, your SAK lost in the recliner story is the only story i've heard of a knife getting lost from "inside" one's pocket. Any other "lost knife" stories have been one's where the pocket carry was infact using the pocket clip as opposed to fully in the pocket. When I first started to utilize pocket clips I "lost a knife 3 times. The last occasion I happened to hear it hit the floor as I sat down. Needless to say, I no longer make use of pocket clips. Interestingly, I've not lost a knife since. If am venturing to the great outdoors, I take the same position on knives as I do with firearms...If you don't want it in your pocket, get a proper holster, especially if it is as valuable as a sebenza!.
The paraframe is a decent knife for very little dollars. I carried one of samller versions many many years ago until getting a DUI and taken off to jail for the night lol. I gifted it to the arresting officer as a consolation prize because they were about to throw it away haha. He happily excepted. I only hope to think he still carries it today well over a decade later.
Regarding the 1st question about losing so many expensive knives: With respect, I think you need to deal with HOW you are losing your items. Replacing them doesn't fix the problem but rather deals with the symptoms of it. Also, knives - not super steels - have been around longer than you and I have been. The best steel I own is 154cm and it has done everything and then some. Taking care of your tools including being aware of where they are is important; call it responsible knife ownership. Not being rude but want to impress a point in brevity. Good luck on your hunt!
I'm not new to carrying a knife, but this video hit home for me as I am new to the collecting / premium aspect. For almost 20 years I've carried a $10 S&W Extreme Ops. It's lost just about all of the screws holding it together, I figured it was time to retire. After a bunch of "research" I ordered a Spyderco PM2 and was blown away at the quality I was missing out on. Since then, I have added 6 more to my rotation from varying price points. My question is about pricing, but not regarding quality / features / etc. I seem to find that most manufacturers will sell direct as well as through 3rd parties. I have noticed pricing is usually cheaper through a 3rd party than directly from the manufacturer's point of sale. One such purchase was a SOG Terminus XR LTE, where I also noticed the blade markings are different as well. Special editions and specific releases aside, do some manufacturers build different versions of the same model (like "outlet" stores of clothing brands)?
Some do, for example you often see a patent pending and a patented version, or multiple different runs of the same model, and some have a cheaper version of a premium knife, like it is mentioned in the Sebenza alternative section. But there are lots of fakes and lookalikes of expensive knives floating about with widely varying quality.
I'm a working knife kind of guy, no pocket candy for me, and my Buck 112 slim select is my favorite knife. Holds an amazing edge for quite a while, light in the pocket and comfortable to hold. However, while I can close it one handed it requires some hand acrobatics. I'd love a similar knife size wise, edge retention, relative cost, but one that is more one hand friendly. I tend toward more classic style and don't need anything fancy, just one that will work day in day out. Thanks for the great content!
from a steel aspect, 420HC steel is a very very tough steel with relatively low edge retention, and a small grain structure so when you put an edge on it, the edge feels extremely sharp. I don't know how important the stainless aspect is to you or which way you lean in your use (if edge retention is more important to you than toughness or if toughness is more important,) but since you like the extreme sharpenss you get on 420HC steel, you may really like VG10 steel. it's very stainless, takes an extremely sticky sharp polished edge, and is relatively easy to sharpen. It would be a medium step down in toughness, a medium step up in edge retention, and about equal in stainless ability. If stainless isn't that important to you (maybe it doesn't get water, sweat or other liquids on it often) you may want to consider cru-wear. (That is my personal favorite right now) very easy to sharpen, takes an insane edge, would be a very tiny drop in toughness (so still very tough) compared to what you have, would be a significant jump up in edge retention and a smallish drop in stainless ability. Not sure how you feel about Spyderco knives or how much you are looking to spend, but if you can wait a bit and have some cash to burn, you may really really like the cru wear spyderco para 3 with micarta handles. It's still in the pre-order phase on the knife center website, but it probably won't be too much longer until it comes out. The compression lock is very very easy to close one hand, I think micarta scales look great and still utilitarian, it's close in size to your 112 and that cru-wear... well like I said it's my favorite right now. On the more budget end 14c28n steel will perform very very closely to the 420HC you have now... something like a Civiv flipper, easy to 1 hand open and close, about the same price point to where you are now, and about the same size too.. hope all this helps, cheers!
Edit: I missed the fact that your post clearly stated that you were looking at about the same price point, you may want to tuck the spyderco suggestion away for a later time. I've never owned a civivi, but they are well liked.

For many years I have carried a Kershaw Needs Work, and I loved it. Sadly, it has been lost. So my question is, what modern knife should I replace it with? Criteria is it much have a Warncliffe blade, and modern high end steel would be a plus. Assisted opening or auto is also a must. I have the Kersahw Launch 13, but it is bigger than what I want for an everyday carry. The Needs Work is my ideal EDC size, and the robust, thicker blade is a must.Thanks a million in advance for any suggestions

Great vid! I have been smcarrying my trusty Soyderco Sage 1 for over 10 years now. Every single day. Its perfect for me for sunole tasks like cuting apples, sharpening pencils, opening packages, etc.
Re: expensive knife misplacer, why not try a strong lanyard attached to your belt and to knife? I know it may get snagged so maybe a retractable lanyard?
In wintery climates with snow on the ground, a lanyard is especially useful if a knife is dropped in a snow bank (while hiking, snowshoeing or snowmobiling, etc).
Without a lanyard, the knife is basically gone, it just disappears into the depths of the snow ...good luck ever finding before Spring.
But with a lanyard (one foot or so long), when you start brushing away the snow in the area where it might have been dropped, the lanyard will trail the drop of the knife, leaving a tail of sorts leading to the knife's position. Actually quite easy to find, follow and then retrieve the dropped knife.
Lanyards make good sense when travelling or working in snow covered areas when using a knife.
In a tight space I caught my first Native 5 Salt from my pocket on some production waste I was lifting into a compactor. Now it spends its time not rusting in a landfill somewhere.
At least it's not lonely. Several weeks later I believe I did it again with a CJRB.
A simple retractable lanyard attaching belt to knife would have likely prevented this. [ kicks self ]

I don't know when I will need mine but I'll need it eventually for sure, it's just a matter of time. I'm 52, I had my first Swiss army knife at age 6 and never go out without a knife. It's one of the oldest tools of humanity if not the oldest, people who don't use knives end up being helped by people like me, so many times I can't remember.
Though I do use mine at work frequently, while fishing and in the kitchen, I've only been in an oh-crap scenario once where I needed mine. I was carrying a Manix 2 XL at the time.
Fortunately all I was forced to do was pull it from my pocket and roll the blade out. It very possibly saved my brother and I from a very ugly scenario.
I made sure to get at least a basic level of training after that incident.

If i were to move up into powder steels, which ones are the most similar to 14C28 in characteristics? There are so many to learn about.

I think so. There are times a traditional knife makes a lot of sense. Often times I carry a modern knife and Swiss Army for those times you need a knife but some might be put off by a knife the flips open. A SAK or a Case doesn't scare people because it was something dad or grandfather carried.
My favorite knives are the Spyderco Shaman, and the Svord peasant. One is very modern and the other as basic as possible. All knives are relevant, though some steels are not
Of course they are. People can buy and carry whatever knife floats their boat, but in reality most of them can accomplish their daily cutting tasks with any small sharp blade. Most people could get by just fine carrying nothing but a utility knife.
Hey DCA I’ve been carrying a Spyderco Native chief for the past few weeks and I’ve come across a problem… it’s a larger than average knife so I was looking to get a companion knife something I can use when discretion is the name of the game. Preferably something in the 3 inch range with a Lockback or slip joint. Bonus points for no pocket clip!

A Swiss Army Knife is a good idea. I have a habit of carrying one on a suspension clip in my off-hand pocket.
I think I've lost 3 knives in my lifetime, all before the age of 14. That's when I got my Swiss Army Knife that I bought with my own money, and it's still in my pocket 40 years later. (although it's had every spring, one blade, and the scales replaced). As to 'why do you need a knife' - that specific knife is what I call a 75% knife - it does 100% of what you need it for 75% well - it's not the best cutting tool - until you don't have another one. It's not the best bottle/can opener until you don't have another one. It's not the best screwdriver, pair of pliers, etc . . .until you don't have anything else except that SAK. I've used it to trim my nails, fix my car, get a car unstuck from the mud (cutting tree branches for traction), fix glasses, and so forth. It will never do a job as well as a dedicated tool for that function - but it will always do a reasonable job in a pinch. In the last 10 years I've started carrying a supplemental knife (or two, or three) that I can always say is a dedicated cutting tool that holds an edge better than my SAK - but that SAK will always have a spot in my pocket.
(Plus, everyone might wonder why you have a knife until something happens and they ask "Does anyone have a knife?" . . . )
Man do I feel your pain about losing knives in reclining couches. Lost my Gen 1 Endura for years. Movers found it when they took the couch apart. Love that knife, so glad to have it back. (Still has the pocket clip!)

Like you said, "collecting" is a perfectly justifiable reason. I have more knives than I will ever carry, some of which I bought for no reason other than I liked how they looked or had a colorway I liked.
For instance, I am a sucker for the red and black combo and immediately picked up the Kershaw Livewire that just came out with that combo. Been looking at them for a while, but could not really "justify" it, but as soon as I saw that one, I had to add it to the collection.

Paraframe was one of my first. I hate it. Had no edge on the tip and whole edge was dull. Had to sharpen it and put a tip on it. Worse yet the frame lock didn't actually move enough to lock it open. Could still close it. So was basically a slip joint.
DCA, I need a suggestion too! I've been carrying a ZT 0562 CF in M390 for like 10 years and I love it a lot. I like its design, the size works for me and the steel is good. I use it for everything, cutting some wood, ropes and wires, preparing food and even (please forgive me) prying up some stuff. Recently, though, I find myself in very dusty and sandy places quite a lot, it kills me to hear the sand in the bearings. I take the thing apart for cleaning way more than I'd want to. Can you suggest me another capable folder that won't suffer from sand? I'm also looking into a fixed blade instead of a folder, but that's another story. Thank you!

Hey DCA, what’s the advantage/disadvantage of a chisel ground edge and when sharpening how do you clean-up the back side without causing a micro bevel?
Some people give AR-RPM9 steel a hard time. Personally I really love the steel. It holds an edge, get super sharp, and sharpens super easy.
I lost my favorite neck knife in 5,000 acres of forest land. Luckily my dogs are trained for object search (they'll find anything that doesn't belong). Two weeks later they focused on a pile of duff alongside a tree stump, my knife! Which now lives above my bed for opening cookies😊

Hello DCA I have been on the hunt for the perfect knife for me for years, I have fluctuated back and forth from folders to fixed blades and from heavy to lightweight. Trying to find what works for me. This cycle repeats until eventually I give up and revert back to a simple carry like a Case knife. What strategy should I use to finally find that balance between fixed and folder and heavy and lightweight.
I'm looking for a knife that has the capability of a heavyweight knife but in a lightweight package.
Either folder or fixed. What do you think would be the best option/options.

From what I understand, toughness is an expression of how much force a steel can take before chipping or breaking. Edge retention is essentially a function of how hard the steel is, so how easily abrasion deforms the apex of an edge.
It's a balancing act between edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance. Generally the harder a steel can be made to be, the more brittle, less tough it is.
This is why we tend to see blades intended for impact and able to withstand being twisted out of cuts ( like machetes ) having less focus on edge retention and corrosion resistance.
There are more exotic, higher cost steels intended to withstand impacts but also sport high edge retention and they tend to have less corrosion resistance focus.
Magnacut is currently considered the most well balanced steel for good retention, high corrosion resistance and high toughness.
I find for a blade that doesn't get much abuse or impact force, steels more focused on edge retention and corrosion resistance are best for my use cases and environment.
Once I learned to sharpen and strop, I found some of the stainless steels with less edge retention focus worked just fine and were far more affordable than their high edge retention counterparts. A good beater steel like Nitro-V or 14C28N is fairly inexpensive, holds and edge well enough for most everyday cutting tasks and are pretty tough. If you don't let the edge become so dull only a sharpening will bring the fine apex back, they can be stopped back to a very sharp state pretty easily.
I love pocket clips, but they have been responsible for me losing knives on more than one occasion when doing very physical activities. Carrying it deep in your pocket isn’t always pleasant, but you won’t lose any more knives. There is no easy answer.

The gerber paraframe is 7cr17mov steel and there is also some made from 440A steel but that im sure is only the paraframe small/mini
Shout-out to Ruike knives. They're severely underrated and have been some of the best work horse knives I've had yet.
I really like my Ruike knives. Very good price/quality ratio and I EDC them in regular rotation with my Civvis, Cold Steels and Benchmades.
I have the P-801, 108, 831, 865 and the Hussar. Not the "best current trend" knife snob steel, but the heat treat is good and they stay sharp for a good amount of time despite rigorous use.
The Jager is a great fixed blade, the sheath is bulky as hell though.

I'm curious, do you know of any British manufacturers or makers that would be worth checking out? I ask for a couple of reasons: a) obviously good to support the home team, b) I imagine a British maker would be very focused on our sub-3", folding, non-locking regs and c) there was a time when British Steel was famous world-wide (esp. Sheffield steel). Tbh I'm not sure if it was actually any good, but we sold massive amounts of cutlery and then, well, just seemed to stop (1970's?) Thanks!

A question for KniFAQ - are there many options for a Knife-Prybar type of folding knife? I have owned the Gerber Quadrant for two years and have found the blade shape to be incredibly useful. It came in super clutch when a door lock wouldn’t flip open during a wedding day. I was able to pry the lock to it’s open position to allow the wedding party to enter the ceremony. Needless to say, I love the blade shape. Any others out there?

I’m an auto mechanic and I carry a blade at all times my current rotation ranges from an s110v pm3 bugout s30v to my manix 2 15v and shaman m4 I use all my knives constantly but looking to pickup a new benchmade but thought I’d pitch the idea to your faq thoughts. I'm a smaller fixed blade guy for EDC. Mine is an older inexpensive Condor Kephart that I modded to mimic my son's Izula. Folders are so very popular and I appreciate the appeal (fidgety and smaller.) But I just prefer the utility in fixed blade EDC. What are a couple of your ideal fixed blade EDC's in the sub$100 range and sub$200 that would convince folder lovers?

Hey DCA, I've been using a Coast DX338 that was given to us at work just as a simple everyday use knife.. I actually really enjoy it's simplicity, but what do you recommend as an upgrade (not overly pricey but looks and feels great)?
A friend once asked me why I carry a pocket knife (I have carried a knife since I was 10 years old). "Is it for self-defense? " I told him no, that isn't my primary motivation, although it can be used for that. I carry a knife because it's a handy, useful tool. My coworkers used to give me a little good natured ribbing because I insisted on keeping my knives razor sharp. I always replied that a dull knife isn't good for much.

I was never into them but recently got the launch 18 and love the little thing. I gotta get a livewire sometime too. But the bel air has been a wanted item in the community for a long time.

I love my Kershaw Layup. Esge retention is great with the D2. Super slicey due to the flat grind. The assisted opening takes some getting used to but i like it. No play in the blade while its locked up. And it was 54 bucks, which is what i wanted. Im hard on my knives, and use the crap out of them. Theyre not "man jewlery" like so many these days with their 400 dollar carbon fiber larper extreme
We all heard the horror story of the guy who lost two Sebenza and Duas, and I would die if that happened to me. My question to you is what lanyard and/or other retention device would you recommend to secure your knife both in pocket and while in use so you won’t mind carrying high dollar knives? Thank you!
I've carried a large inkosi for a long time. The pocket clip has been secure. Some people carry them in a leather slip in the front pocket.
That Nano looks cool. But it looks exactly like my Lionsteel Myto with the free spinning pivot on both sides. I took two torx screwdrivers and COULD NOT get that thing apart(with tools that I use to take all my knives apart). I’m going to have to spend money on a fatter bit driver to get more torque on it. Which pisses me off. A knife that’s hard to take apart and clean is not a good knife in my opinion. Keep that in mind if you wanna by a Nano/ Myto.
Hi DCA and gang - Back when I was transitioning from flea market knives to brands, I could only afford very budget knives, the BM Griptilian was the iconic knife everyone talked about. Years later later and with more disposable income, I of course had to get one which I've had for a while now. Occasionally finds its way into my pocket and I do quite enjoy it, but I'm thinking maybe something similar and more updated would be better for EDC. I like the crossbar lock, overall utility of the blade, etc. The handle is a bit thick and tends to tear up the pants a little though. Any suggestions for something similar, preferably without a flipper tab? Thanks!

Why do I have knives (I rarely have only one)?
1) To slice things.
2) To manipulate/ retrieve/etc. small items.
3) To open boxes and those otherwise about impossible to open plastic product packages.
4) Potential last ditch up close & personal self defense weopon.
5) It's intelligent to be prepared for various situations. To have what you may need. I also carry a cigarette lighter wrapped with a little duct tape for instant tinder, a multitool, and a bright flashlight at all times. The duct tape can also be used to secure paper or cloth as a bandage, or be used as a tourniquet.
A knife is just a tool.
All tools have a purpose, and most could be used to harm somebody.
Are tools bad, now?
It used to irritate me when people would ask me that question, but now I take it as an opportunity to share the value of knives and other edc gear.
If someone does not want to carry a knife, they don't have to do so.
Hey DCA, Seth and Co., can you give me a few examples of practical uses for a karambit? I think it would be fun to add one to the knife collection, but I'm struggling to justify owning one for everyday use. Are there any non-self defense/tactical things they do better than a standard knife? Just curious. Thanks for your help
Lost my travel companion, LLBean/Wenger SAK (about 1968-1993), I think in a NY State motel room's sheets. Never got over it. I have freely and under duress given knives up or away, but that was the only one truly lost.

Hello there KC crew. I find consistently good heat treatments come out of Spyderco. I'm interested in getting an opinion on 2 or 3 other mass production manufacturers who you feel are putting out consistently good heat treatments. I have plenty of solid work knives from Spyderco already.

Not sure if this has been asked. Is CPM MagnaCut good for kitchen knives? Can MagnaCut be the future end-all be-all blade steel for kitchen knives? I'm looking for a new kitten knife set that that requires little maintenance and rarely needs to be sharpened.
in Canada, the Paraframe is sold as a 420 HC steel.
Is there a slight curved blade shape? Not aggressive like a karambit just a lil more suddle??
You can try searching for keywords like “recurve” or “hawkbill” to get some ideas and see what’s out there. Hawkbills are very curved usually, I think, but maybe there’s a blade out there that uses the name but with a more subtle curve. Recurves might get you closer to something that fits what you’re thinking of.
Victorinox hunter xt, 111 mm, normal blade, recurbed blade and saw. Big and heavy duty, not a city edc...
Or the Parachute, just the recurbed blade (they don't produce it nowadays, only in the second hand market)
Have a look at the Kansept Copperhead or the Kubey Anteater. They are both hawkbill-shaped but are somewhat more subtle in their curves.

Here's a most serious question for you: When I was new to the knife world there was a lot of puzzling new jargon, but it was obvious to me what a dive knife must be - it's a tactical knife you'd take to a sleazy bar. (The obsession with salt and corrosion was confusing, unless it was about margaritas somehow.) Are there other knives named for the places you should take them?

Had a Carbon Fiber 940 BM I lost...my first pricey knife I bought for myself almost kill my love for knives. Just let it teach me some awareness.
I lost an Osborne 940-1 with green aluminum scales. Only knife I ever lost. Still mourning over that little beauty, too.
Everyone should be a knife person. I use my Spyderco PM2 daily for opening packages, cutting twine, scraping off stickers, envelopes, picking stuff out of my teeth, cutting food, taking out splinters, cutting zip ties, as a mini screw driver, to push the little button on electronics to pull out the SDCard, cutting off price tags, when fishing, for electronics projects, to break down cardboard boxes, to scrape gunk off my clothing, cut my nails, pick crap out of my nails, mark things like boards, cut pieces of paper, sharpening pencils, removing staples, holding money(like a money clip), opening bottles, to cut loose threads on yoru clothes, seperating plastic parts and opening things like battery compartments, stripping/cutting wires, to get knots out of rope, just to fidget with, getting gum out of carpet, making s'more sticks, whittling wood (I dont really use mine for this but you can), using it as a paper weight, cutting pills, cutting 550 paracord or straps, I've used it to open keyrings, to pop those packing air filled pillow thingies (i do this more often than probably anything else), trimming 3d printed parts, to cut those plastic model trees that hold board game parts, i trim a lot of plastic pieces....the list is endless
How about knives under $50 and $100 with flush mount, recessed screw pocket clips? Bonus points for knives with blockout plates in the event of reverse pocket clips.
I live in Australia so this is quite a common question, i have my leatherman which people are little more understanding of but still. Easiest way to explain is say i use it for work, i open packaged and send them, so need a knife to do that. Breaking down boxes and all sorts.

My only Sebenza is a Land 910 Plus, but I liked it so much, I bought a second one in case I lost the first. At that point, I was still mourning the loss of my Victorinox Cadet Alox. I found that Cadet again in December 2023, and it probably gets the most pocket time now that it's returned like the prodigal son.
“Do you have your wallet, your keys, and your knife?” My father asked me this question every time we left the house. This was well before the smartphone. These three things were what I was expected to bring with me everywhere, everyday. It was always better to have and not need, than need and not have. I now carry a SAK huntsman and Gerber suspension everyday.

@@CadillacDriver It sounds worse than it is...that was probably over the course of 10 years. The first sbenza was the 21, not current 31, and Grayman hasn't made folders for a handful of years. All were lost hunting with them clipped on the pocket.

Hello guys. I may or may not work at a place that does not allow a pocket knife. Or, from what I can see, nothing longer than 2 inches. But I don't want something 2 inches. Is there a knife, when in the pocket, does NOT look like a knife in the pocket but more like a pen in the pocket? Something that would not get noticed but still do tough work when needed.
Maxace Peregrine seems like a perfect fit for that first question. **VERY** Sebenza-esque, starting at $298. Not American made, don’t know if Knife Center even carries them, but if you’re looking for a $300-ish Sebenza replacement, I’d say that’s the one.
Knife FAQ Question:
Recently I received my new Kershaw 6105 and decided to try using it without the pocket clip since I usually just keep my pocket knife…ummm…in my pocket.
I must say after about an hour of use without the clip installed, I reinstalled the pocket clip.
I didn’t realize how much that clip helps in positioning my fingers outside of the blade path when ‘flicking it closed.
Anyone else have an opinion on removing a pocket clip?
I tend to keep the pocket clip installed for the same reason.
I took the pocket clip off of my Spyderco Para 3. I just found it to be more comfortable to use without the clip. I also found it to be bulkier than some of my 3" blade Benchmade's. And so I stopped pocket carrying it. It now lives in a Tactical Tailor Admin Pouch that is attached to my Kifaru E&E bag...
I don't really use the knife that much.. I carry a Leatherman and use the scissors the most.

I have a serious question that seeks to bind our modern era to the historical traditions of yore: Back in medieval times, they would to use an "eating knife" when showing up to a dinner party (things like forks hadn't been invented yet). Also, many things they did were concerned with personal honor and status. So, what do you think would make a good modern eating knife? My guess for parameters would be a max budget of around $450, fixed blade, and easy to sharpen (feel free to adjust these parameters as you see fit).
If you find a good knife for eating peas with, let us all know.

Anyone know where I can buy phosphorus bronze washers for knives. I'd like to install some in a pilar I have, for instance. I don't know what id/od/thickness I'd need though. Is there anyone in the aftermarket offering these? A filter by knife option a plus but any help is appreciated.

If you like Gerber knives and you want something better than their current offerings, you need to look into the world of vintage Gerber Made in USA or even the first generation Gerber International Made in Taiwan knives, from about 20-30 years ago. There's still plenty of them out there on the secondary market. Another good option in current production is the Spartan Harsey Talos folder. It's the spiritual descendant of the original Gerber International Harsey Air Ranger (not the current production model), updated to modern materials.

Is S30v a super steel?
Yes.
One could argue that CPM S30V was the first "super steel". It was developed with input from various knife makers, notably Chris Reeve.
Interesting, your SAK lost in the recliner story is the only story i've heard of a knife getting lost from "inside" one's pocket. Any other "lost knife" stories have been one's where the pocket carry was infact using the pocket clip as opposed to fully in the pocket. When I first started to utilize pocket clips I "lost a knife 3 times. The last occasion I happened to hear it hit the floor as I sat down. Needless to say, I no longer make use of pocket clips. Interestingly, I've not lost a knife since. If am venturing to the great outdoors, I take the same position on knives as I do with firearms...If you don't want it in your pocket, get a proper holster, especially if it is as valuable as a sebenza!.

The paraframe is a decent knife for very little dollars. I carried one of samller versions many many years ago until getting a DUI and taken off to jail for the night lol. I gifted it to the arresting officer as a consolation prize because they were about to throw it away haha. He happily excepted. I only hope to think he still carries it today well over a decade later.
