    We appreciate you for watching SUMO PRIME TIME. This time we covered the Sumo Fan Festival 2022 which took place on October 6 & 7 at Kokugikan in Tokyo. It was so nice to see the fans having a wonderful time at the festival and hats off to all the rikishi and oyakata for organizing such a magnificent event. For those who weren't able to attend the festival this time, it would be great if you can do so the next time because SUMO PRIME TIME will be there along with the rikishi and stablemasters to welcome and greet you all. In the meantime, please stay tuned to the channel as we'll be back with more updates and shows leading up to the November tournament. See you soon!

    Thank you! I had no idea there was a fan festival planned. With out this UA-cam channel I would never have discovered this part of Sumo tradition. The fans look like they are really having a great time. They are so excited. The chance to be near the rikishi is a great opportunity.

    Oh, I so wish that I could have been there. I would love to have seen the singing performances, and I would have tried all the chanko. I would have gotten as many pictures and autographs as possible. I hope the success of the event prompts the JSA to hold them more often, at least every couple of years if not annually.
    Hiro, your shiko has improved since you got instruction from Oyama oyakata. That's some Abi-esque elevation!
    People often say that sumo is secretive, closed-off, and inaccessible, and I suppose that in some ways, it is. However, I cannot think of another sport where there is so much direct interaction between fans and athletes, not to mention coaches, referees, and whatever the yobidashi are ("ushers" doesn't do them justice). Playing chess with Miyagino-san is like playing with Michael Jordan. The rikishi seemed to be having a good time, too, or if they weren't they faked it really well.
    Is there any chance that the JSA will make some of that merchandise available to foreign fans? I want one of those tee-shirts. It would also be great if they opened the fan club to people outside Japan. It's not closed technically, but all the information is in Japanese.
    I'm looking forward to the next installment of Sumo Prime Time!

      I agree with you, that would of been fun, I'm hoping to make it over to one of the next couple of basho. I just received some actual basho merch from big sumo fan (2 tegata towels and sumo techniques foldout) in case your looking for more sumo items.

      @@Normandy1944 I have bought from BigSumoFan. They're a good source of sumo stuff, except they sell out of things I want. 🙂 I hope they will get some of the new fan towels with the rikishi likenesses. I also wish they had the full-sized fans. I have a couple of the small ones, but it's not the same.

    Seeing Teru do the Sumo Prime Time bit almost feels like whiplash! I know it's a little obligation on the part of the rikishi, but it's funny and almost wild to see the big stoic faces of sumo doing the line and gesture

    • @jornavyr2459
      @jornavyr2459 Рік тому +3

      I doubt that it would be an obligation. It is probably very much appreciated, but if they were obliged, then you would think that they would only have the most popular Rikishi doing it. To me it seems like they're taking anyone that they can get.

    • @LauraJdogmom
      @LauraJdogmom Рік тому +2

      @@jornavyr2459 I think it is an obligation. All rikishi basically have two jobs. Doing actual sumo is job #1 for everybody. For lower rankers, job #2 is to cook, clean, and wait on the sekitori and coaches. Sekitori don't have to do anything menial. For them, job #2 is public relations. That means doing videos, photo shoots, tours, events, New Year's bean throwing, product promotions, and whatever else the JSA's PR department wants them to do. The thing is, I think most of them enjoy at least some of this work.

    I’ve only been a fan of sumo for about 3 years but I got hooked big time. I watch every tournament intently. I rooted for Hakuho but unfortunately by the time I became interested he seemed to be hurt more than he was healthy. I started following sumo right after Terunofuji made it back to makuuchi and quickly became a fan of his. I love it that he’s now Yokozuna. I’m now following Asanoyama’s progress back to the top and have predicted he will be the next Yokozuna. Anyway, I loved this video and it struck me that American sports could use some marketing like this. Have face to face interaction between the fans and the athletes like this. Let the fans get to know the athletes are real people just like them. The fans would love it and I believe our sports would see a surge in ticket sales and merchandise revenue.
