I was a serious Civil War reenactor for 18 years and this skit is really spot-on when it comes to being authentic. The clothing on both Yank and Reb is correct, the stacked rifles correct, the entire scene is perfect. It caught me totally off-guard that it was even SNL at first. I wish more of these historically accurate spoofs on history would be done. It's a great way of "hooking" kids into real history- better than any novel.
I suspect the SNL prop guy simply went on-line and found the local Yank reenactment group and asked them to bring everything they owned, including rifles, tent, etc. They'd have been happy to help. Everything is too authentic in the skit to have been merely bought by SNL.
