  • Amidst the rush to jump on the AI bandwagon, organizations everywhere are learning---in some cases the hard way---that AI is not necessarily as well-behaved as they would like it to be. Getting AI to follow human rules, whether in the form of laws, regulations, or policies, is not as easy as it seems. Why is this such a difficult problem to solve? And what solutions are available to ensure that this problem is addressed? Dr. John Licato answers these questions and offers a possible path forward based on his research.
Bio: John Licato is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at USF, and Director of the Advancing Machine and Human Reasoning (AMHR) Lab. He teaches the natural language processing course (in the field that created ChatGPT), and his lab's mission is to not only make AI smarter, but to use those advances to make people reason better as well. His research expertise lies in AI, NLP, human reasoning, cognitive modeling, and legal / regulatory reasoning. He has been featured in outlets such as NPR's Marketplace Tech, ABC Action News, and the Tampa Bay Business Journal.
