I really love the idea of devil fruits spawning before those that most desire them. It works so well with how Oda gives characters powers that closely align with their ideals/desires. Bonney wanting to grow up, Luffy wanting freedom, Doffy wanting to control, Kaku wanting to giraffe.
It even works with the Jacket Fruit, as Kelly is insecure about his small body, and probably the thing he wanted most in the world was being able to control his brother's body. Especially since Bobby lacks the fighting spirit to effectively use his powerful body.
Hm...do we have any examples of characters really NOT vibing with their fruit power (excluding artificial fruits like smiles)? I mean specifically the character views it themselves, not how other characters view it or how the readers view it? If not, this works pretty well as an idea.
well if you take away the extreme selflessness, that wouldnt be Kuma anymore but also Kuma seems to me like someone that will happily be the hero, Luffy has said outright hes not a hero. Luffy is the best and he has a good moral code he lives by, but he also only ever helps his friends, which the bar is really low for ill say if you feed him he will fight literally anyone for you, but you have to ask him for help. Kuma doesnt seem like the type of guy you have to ask before he'll help you
Lovely artwork. Rereading Wano and the top 100 character poll in volume 99 was interesting compared to what would happen now. Jewelry Bonney was like 85 and Kuma at 98 while Carrot was top 10. I suspect new poll will have huge position changes.
It was truly lovely seeing Dragon have such relaxed/warm/casual facial expressions. He looked so cool when he was reassuring Kuma, talking about the winds of fate.
@@xandex69It's the trolley problem, he chose not to go after Ginny so they could continue working on their revolutionary activities to save more people. They definitely didn't have the manpower for a war with the celestial dragons.
I loved that we can get a little tease for the video, the art work was so lovely. To me Kuma’s kind face always stands out in comparison to what we have known until now. The contrast is so tragic 😢
Love the point about these chapters making us see the stark difference between an actual saint who's called as much by the people and the self-proclaimed saints of the Celestial Dragons and World Government,.
That final discussion where Vegapunk gives this bright eyed, excited, optimistic speech about what Pacifistas will be combined with the dramatic irony of us knowing what awful weapons of death they go on to be is so brutal but such good storytelling
I feel like something really cool oda is doing is having Kuma idolize the sun god nika while having to hide his daughter from the literal sun, I feel like having luffy actually fully save Bonnie with the help of kuma is gonna be beautiful
On the note of Vegpunk not sharing his knowledge of stem cells and the possibilities of healing people through them: I don´t think he can just "publish" whatever he wants to the world without going throught he Mariens or in his case most likely directly through the Gorosei.
There's also the resources and technology needed to apply the treatment to other islands. The One Piece world is advanced but not enough to implement Vegapunk's technology everywhere.
@@ThyFloorestFloor I would say with WG's resources it would be possible to implement not only stem cells, but many other technology of Vegapunk as well but obviously they don't care about the welfare of common folk.
I mean explaining the jacket, fruit and the swamp fruit are pretty easy in my opinion. Kelly funk just wished that he could have the power of his brother really deeply. So he got a fruit that allowed him and his brother to combine into one. And caribou just really wanted to kidnap him some mermaids so he got a fruit that made him a swamp guy.
I think it's really interesting (and extremely sad) how Bonny's powers directly relates to her backstory. Children who are subjected to trauma at young ages are forced to grow up much faster than normal, to the point that this is even expressed biologically: children who suffer from trauma go through puberty at an accelerated rate (trauma literally makes their body go "I need to become an adult RIGHT NOW in order to survive this"), and as a result they skip important stages of mental/emotional development in order to survive. Bonny being a 10-year-old girl walking around in the body of a 20-year-old woman reflects directly how survivors of childhood trauma are forced to outwardly become adults when inside they struggle with the lack of mental/emotional stages of development that they weren't allowed to have because of what their body had to do to survive. This is a theme that Oda has returned to many times: both Big Mom and Momo are also reflections of this, as people who are physically adults but still mentally children.
Personally I think this is one of those times Oda needs to do a "Help me Luffy" or " I want to live" moment, and I think it's very much deserved. Kuma has had such a tragic story that I don't think it's fair to end it on a sad note. I really feel it would be more fitting for his long awaited hero Nika to come through for him in some way, and for him to find some happiness finally and be reunited with Bonnie.
This chapter was a necessary breathing chapter! I feel like the offscreening of Bonney her devil fruit was on purpose. So I hope there is gonna be a little bit more to it than we got.
16:30 Oda adding a tiny detail that suddenly recontextualizes 5, 10 or 100 chapters from years ago is one of the things I love the most of this series. I already read that, I already knew what happened, and suddenly I didn't, and it was different. And it's not something that was added later on to the story, it's there in Syrup Village already: Kuro's flashback recontextualized Shells Town, Morgan went from just a douche to someone made into a douche, I don't know if his douchery was innate to himself anymore, because of 2 panels 20 chapters later. Now I wonder what would've happened to him had his ship not run into Kuro at that point. Now, while I already knew Kuma had sent the Strawhats to specific locations on purpose, I suddenly feel this locations had a special meaning to him, making his choice more powerful
When you mentioned Kuma considers himself as a pacifist in a way that he doesn't instigate violence but will violently take down enemies to defend the defenceless people, I would love to add one thing. At the end of 1099, he called himself a "weak-willed pacifist" and that fits him so much. As much as he wants peace and no violence with his acts, due to his good nature, he can't bear himself seeing his people getting hurt so he has to use his strength to defend them, that's where the "weak willed pacifist" comes into play.
Love how much you're enjoying this series. Always so great to see. This chapter was fantastic. Loved seeing Bonney looking at at Kuma saying she'd never seen him like that before. She got to see her dad in action, and taking down the corrupt.
I think kuma believes his life doesn’t hold value because the only time change has been affected in his life, for good or bad, have been through violence. He has never been able to rectify a situation without the use of force and I think it’s like him taking on the emotional pain of doing so.
The jacket fruit guy if I remember really wanted to be his brother. To have his height and strength so he could actually contend as a boxer. So that actually works for me why he’d get that fruit
Personally I find it very funny how Oda lately seem to take popular but minor theories and answer the questions with almost no thought. Bonney fruit, ate it off screen Momos fruit is a failure, because it was pink Did Iva get caught on purpose to recruit the prisoners to the RA? I mean they did recruit the prisoner, but nah they just got caught and did their thing while there.
Vegapunk is wierd cause he clearly invents for what he thinks is the betterment of humanity but he is so blinded by the positive posibilities of he's inventions that he cant consider that people might use his inventions for evil. he always ask "if he can" but never "if he should"
GOD that artwork is beautiful! It literally made me tear up instantly. I love Kuma so much and want to see him win. I just fear for what in Imu’s name Saturn is cooking for him.
Bonney not realising the change until she sees herself in the mirror reminded me of Luffy way back in Drum Island when he didn't feel the cold until someone told him that it was cold hahah
Well the Jacket Jacket fruit is interesting, despite it literally being a gag fruit. When you look at the relationship of the Funk brothers, Kelly (the Jacket fruit user) has always been picked on for his size and has always been jealous of Bobby (the giant super strong brother) for his huge body. But Bobby is a pacifist, so Kelly resented that and took advantage of it to help himself, and them by extension. I would imagine Kelly's fruit would have reincarnated near him due to him having thoughts like, "man, i really wish i had Bobby's strong body! He doesn't even use it right! If only I could have his strength, then no body would mess with me ever again." And so the Jacket fruit spawned near him. Cause remember, the jacket jacket fruit isn't used for protecting yourself from cold, thats just the name of it. It's more like the body swap body swap fruit, or the wrap wrap fruit lol.
12:40 i honestly dig this theory. Doesnt explain other cases of respawning fruits but the fruit seeking out the person who's desires matches them is good. Also ties into the whole awakening is being one with your fruit. Which further backs up your theory that the fruit seeks the user out.
that artwork was INCREDIBLE! I am so excited to see more! I do love that we are getting to see more of Dragon with this flashback meaning we are probably going to get to see EVEN more of the Revolutionary army with this arc since it is Bonney and Kuma focused. I just know Oda is going to break my heart many more times by the time this arc ends.
Kuma asking them “Where would you like to take a vacation?” isn’t just for each character, but they’re places he wish he could’ve taken Bonney to for a vacation.
No matter how many people Kuma has saved, you just know he only ever thought about the people he couldn’t save. 😢 Edit- Merphy, your artist made an AMAZING piece!
I loved this chapter so much! That panel of Kuma on the bottom left of the double-page speed is amazing! I know Oda’s art can lean childish but when Oda wants to pull out all the stops, he can! I think we all predicted that Kuma agreed to become the Pacifista in exchange for curing Bonney and that we all predicted that Kuma’s name “tyrant” was World Government propaganda. I love the irony that Vegapunk named the weapon project after Kuma, who’s a pacifist. What I was not calling was seeing a montage of all the places where Kuma sent the Straw Hats for the timeskip. I honestly didn’t think that was an explanation that we were going to get or really even needed. But it’s a really nice piece of character work and world-building. It’s also a callback that doesn’t take away from the story or pull you out of it but rather adds even more. I'm still in the camp that Dragon has the Rain God Zoan and not the Wind Logia. And did you catch the old man with the actual DF encyclopedia? What‽ The fact that we actually see someone reading from a DF encyclopedia, and don’t just hear someone say “I looked in the DF encyclopedia” is a big deal!
god you're such a great storyteller.. i've already consumed the new chapter and already absorb it but you made me feel it.. you've given me different perspective and it made me appreciate this chapter more.. thanks i still have questions though.. like when did kizaru befriended bonney? when did kuma learns about luffy being dragon's son when even ivan doesnt know about it? does kuma know about luffy being the sun god nika? why did kuma became a cyborg when vegapunk said he only needs his blood for his clone? why and when did bonney became a pirate? i really hope the next chapter would answer this questions
This chapter was such a connective tissue, made me Gasp at 3 particular moments, being Kuma travelling to all locations, Pacifista naming history..and one other that I will keep to myself until its revealed.
The Jacket Jacket fruit actually makes soooooo much sense now in this context. Im assuming that the elder, was it the Funky Bros(?), probably grew up jealous of his younger brothers powerful body. A younger brother that, despite being powerful, was very passive and didnt like to fight. Presumedly elder stuck up for younger, a lot growing up, and also probably got him in trouble, and then he gets a devil fruit that (1) makes him as powerful as his younger brother, and (2) helps the younger brother stand up for himself. Some conjecture here, but i like it
Such a amazing chapter. I hope when Kuma arrives Vagapunk has something that can bring his memory beck. He deserve to raise his daughter and to finaly see Nika
Bonney has grown a lot mentally in current times and even at Sabaody, saving Zoro. Her being 12, and looking into the memory bubble, must be devastating to all ages, still the kiddo learning it all definitely will mature her even more.
Something I’d like to point out is that it isn’t vegapunk’s fault the tech isn’t being shared. He works for the world government, every single advancement made has to go through them first if it’s to ever see the light of day and they’re not exactly interested in the people’s wellbeing. Also, crowdfunding in the one piece world lol where most people are barely getting by and the celestial dragons are bleeding them for all they’re worth.
Listening to your wording gave me a theological perspective on Kuma. He gave his entire life to the people of the world and sacrificed his own name, similar to Jesus. His crown of thorns was the crown of “tyrant”. He took upon others’ pain every Sunday. His father in heaven was Nika, the deity with capacity for infinite manifestation, creation, and freedom. He always placed others before himself and never called himself a saint. Similar to Jesus, he was peaceful but could become enraged at injustice.
Vegapunk is such an interesting character.the fact the he sees Kuma and realizes he’s a buccaneers so he takes advantage of it by trying to make a deal for the love of science. Not cause it’s the right thing hung to do. I hope he continues to be like this
I thought Kuma visiting those islands was just a cute detail but oh my god you're so right, he sent the Straw Hats to places he knew they would grow how did that go over my head???
I love the way Kuma dedicated his life to do what he thought Nikka would do, always being kind and fighting in order to grant people their freedom. But I think is interesting to note that, while he is indeed doing that, there's one fundamental difference between that legend from his childhood that inspired him and his reality: everytime he has fought to liberate those who were oppresed, he has done it with great rage towards the oppressors and a ferocious look in his face. I'm not saying that invalidates anything he has done, but I think is an interesting comparison with the legend of Joyboy, who saved people with a smile on their face no matter what. As good as a person Kuma was, he could've never "be/become" Joyboy.
its interesting that corazon essentially went through the same exact thing for law when he was a kid. even for the same reason of saving his life due to a life threatening illness. also its very cool that vegapunk did indeed make the pacifistas into beings willing to defend others and be a hero by making the kuma pacifistas into the police on egghead island
Just thinking about the massive amount of sequel you can make with the side characters backstory even villain/antagonist from a single Manga/anime blows my mind.
I also felt oda rushing things a little bit but overall it's still very great tbh. I think it's because he wanted to hit certain anniversaries but he took a lot of break (very deserved) due to the live action series, his surgery and his overall health so now he is a little behind schedule and need to move a little quicker Fun fact: Becori means "suck-up"
Honestly the jacket jacket fruit from a dream perspective makes a lot of sense in a weird way. The older funk brother could have been jealous of his timid little brother’s powerful body. So his desire and dream could have been to have his little brothers body, who wasn’t using it to its full potential, due to his meek nature. So the jacket jacket fruit came to him, and now he can fulfill his dream of having a powerful build like his brother, or more specifically, he now can have his little brothers body.
Definitely enjoyed the chapter. One gripe is how Bekori had three different showings. Wish he “disappeared” after take two. Bonney potentially drawing the fruit to her is cool, but especially interesting if she simply manifested a power which will later become a Devil Fruit. Curious if something about Celestial Dragons, since their top brass are magic users, makes their bloodline (including Bonney) natural vessels for such power. Also, seems the Revolutionary Army had an acting Captain of the Eastern forces, just like Sorbet had an acting king. Both simply reclaimed the official positions that were once filled by Kuma and Ginny. Some low-key poetry.
a friend pointed out to me that someone like Brook could want a person with the jacket fruit, so that made me think how that dumb fruit could've manifested
I imagine your theory is how so many people get DF that match their personality but sometimes those people who desire it just don’t eat it. This means it gets picked up by a rando and is eventually eaten by someone that didn’t match exactly (hence jacket and swamp)
Wait a second... That reminds me. We have no idea where these fruits physically come from. We have the description you quoted, sure, but we don't know what's out there listening to the wishes of mankind and putting those fruits within their reach. How sick would it be if there were an eldritch angle to One Piece, and the elders were either in on it or holding it back? Also, that art piece is amazing! Tissine really knocked it out of the park! That's an auto-follow from me.
in my mind bonney was just eating a bunch of food like she does. and accidentally ate the fruit with all the other food there. maybe whoever brought the food didnt notice it because it just spawned from the last user dying, along with bonneys desire/dream like you said
I really love the idea of devil fruits spawning before those that most desire them.

Giraffes are *COOL*

Presumedly elder stuck up for younger, a lot growing up, and also probably got him in trouble, and then he gets a devil fruit that (1) makes him as powerful as his younger brother, and (2) helps the younger brother stand up for himself.
Some conjecture here, but i like it
Such a amazing chapter. I hope when Kuma arrives Vagapunk has something that can bring his memory beck. He deserve to raise his daughter and to finaly see Nika
The art is a great idea!
That art piece is beautiful oh my god
I think it’s just the camera work, but you’re giving off a greater vibe than before
That art is so amazing!
It’s my head cannon that when Kuma was travelling the world he went to Raftel, found the one piece but left because there wasn’t a cure for Bonney.
Similar to Jesus, he was peaceful but could become enraged at injustice.
digging the thumbnail art.
Bekori is the definition of "how many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man!"
Vegapunk is such an interesting character.the fact the he sees Kuma and realizes he’s a buccaneers so he takes advantage of it by trying to make a deal for the love of science. Not cause it’s the right thing hung to do. I hope he continues to be like this
so wholesome art i going use this art my wallpaper
My brother's life was saved with a stem cell transplant (leukemia), so really cool to see it brought into One Piece!
I thought Kuma visiting those islands was just a cute detail but oh my god you're so right, he sent the Straw Hats to places he knew they would grow how did that go over my head???
I love how Abdullah and Jeet rock up to claim Kuma's bounty and in the next pannel he's blasting the hell out of their boat.
"How does that explain someone who wants to wear someone as a jacket?! I don't know?" Ever see Silence of the Lambs?
BartholomeW Kuma
This chapter was truly special
I think it's because he wanted to hit certain anniversaries but he took a lot of break (very deserved) due to the live action series, his surgery and his overall health so now he is a little behind schedule and need to move a little quicker
Fun fact: Becori means "suck-up"
I would have never expected kizaru to be vibing on drums of liberationwith kuma amd bonney .😂
Kuma best father in the series? Yes. Besto friendo? Yes. Best husband? Yes. Best character in general? Yes. Oda: “That’s nice, time to suffer”.
It's prob fair that Bonney just finds hers on the ground after Kuma got his at God Valley. Not every fruit needs an epic entrance after all.
Well done to Kuma and Corason for travelling the world for their adopted children.
