    All the discussion about cis people getting gender dysphoria is so interesting! My best friend is a cis woman, and she told me about a time she explored gender some- she tried out they/them pronouns for a couple weeks, and felt gross the whole time. She was worried that it was because she had some unconscious transphobia to work on, and I told her "no, that just sounds like it made you dysphoric. Your gender identity wasn't being affirmed" and it was like a lightbulb went off. She's like "I knew you deal with that every day, but oh my gosh, now that I've felt it, that's awful!"
    I feel so bad for cis people who deal with emasculation, being told they're not ladylike, to man up etc, end up feeling bad/guilty for normal human behavior, but don't have the language to understand why the pressure to conform is hurting them. Gender roles hurt everybody and I'm glad more and more people are expanding their understanding of what it means to feel limited.

    • @StarlitGlitch
      @StarlitGlitch 9 місяців тому +89

      Idk if it’s actually gender dysphoria, but for me as a cis woman I feel deeply unfortunate with looking masculine or being treated in ways I feel like are how men are treated and actively work to appear more feminine through makeup and clothes/recoil if I feel girls are treating me like they would a guy.
      But it could be more of an insecurity than dysphoria?

    • @kaitlynmorgan4613
      @kaitlynmorgan4613 9 місяців тому +51

      @@StarlitGlitch well its different to ig be treated like "one of the guys" vs being called a guy for an example. cause that persons friend was unknowingly being referred to by the wrong pronouns (since she ended up going by/being comfortable with she/her after all) and it made them feel grossed out/wrong

    • @borntobetogether
      @borntobetogether 9 місяців тому +67

      this is so so interesting, cus when i started questioning my gender (still am 😿) i tried they them pronouns (im afab) and it didnt feel gross, but i did feel immensely guilty, like i was just faking it to seem cool. then i went by he they and now online i only use/ my friends refer to me with "he/his" only. but in person everyone calls me she cus im not out, and it feels SO gross. but im so confused and ive digged A LOT about this cus i know that in some cases, for some people, it has to do w internalized misogyny/ not wanting to be associated w the female gender cus of trauma/ the negative weight and implications being a woman carries. so it's very interesting how your friend experienced pretty much what i did, but reversed. im def gonna be thinking about that a lot and what it could possibly mean for me lol 😿😿

      I’m a gay guy and was never that into masculine things as a child and that felt very isolating. I’ve tried to explain to people before but struggled to get across the idea that I’ve definitely felt gender euphoria as a cis man, where I’ve enjoyed something traditionally masculine and loved it. I know that it shouldn’t matter so much, but it feels like an assertion of ‘yes, I’m a man’ which is not something I felt much as a child. I know traditional gender roles are BS but there’s something so validating to me for my own gender to like really get into watching sport or excel at some DIY for example that makes me feel so happy. I have quite a few trans and NB friends now and enjoy hearing them describe gender euphoria and I think more people should acknowledge it when it happens, cause I reckon society would be less hostile to the trans community if people also took time to notice when they really feel validated in their own gender, but I guess maybe if you’ve never felt emasculated or misgendered or similar you wouldn’t notice or appreciate the opposite when it happens.

    The bit when one of them said "I think you have to be a little misogynistic to pass" kinda resonated with me. My dad has asked me "are you even a man," more than once when I would refuse to join in his belittling women and there have been many times when I guess I wasn't misogynistic enough, so people (including women that I had an interest in) assumed I was gay. • @LC-sc3en
      @LC-sc3en 9 місяців тому +93

      I was really into stories with passing and gender bending as a kid. I would usually get the same way whenever at the end they would go back to presenting as their original gender. But really mostly because it usually also meant going back to performing all the dumb gender roles or expectations.
      It always seemed like the themes of the story were "gender based restrictions are dumb" and "be yourself". But almost inevitably after the reveal, especially with girls they would go back to long hair, make up, and end up with a boyfriend at the end who only allows himself to love her because she's actually super femme. Sometimes it was even worse and they give up on their original ambitions now that they have proven they are capable and retire into expected femininity. And everyone treats them less well than they did while passing so playing it as a good thing always seemed bad to me. Though I suppose I didn't count for dysphoria.
      I think this movie did better than many in its ending. But it still decided "girl" meant hair must be down and long despite how impractical that is for soccer. Putting the priority on femininity rather than her litteral goals. I played soccer, I was offended. I also hated the SA comedy and how most of the characters were gendered stereotypes. So I came away with a bad taste.
      Painter of the Wind and Coffee Prince are more my style.

      as a kid i read/watched a lot of stuff about women pretending to be men and was always so disappointed when they returned to their female selves in the end. i rejected canon endings and just believed they continued being men.
      every time i tried to write a story about a girl who pretended to be a boy, these "girls" remained boys in the end.
      later i learned this is called "transmasc" and this is what i am.

    I am a cis woman who is roughly 6', with short hair, a bit of a wider build, and a typically more masculine style (I haven't worn any skirts or dresses since leaving school 8 years ago). Because of that, I have constantly been confused for a man. People frequently address me as "Sir", "Mister", and (since moving to France) "Monsieur". It is definitely possible for cis people to experience gender dysphoria- not that cis people have it "as bad" as trans people, as gender dysphoria is merely one of many things they have to deal with.
    I also grew up constantly being told that no one could ever love me due to things like my height, build, and style when compared to my gender and sexual orientation ("no guy is going to want to stand on their tiptoes to kiss their girlfriend!!" etc), similar to what some trans people feel.

    Hello, I once took a Shakespeare theater class, and this is my two cents on how Sebastian and Viola not looking much alike in this kinda works with the Shakespeare tradition. Something that the theater teacher of my aforementioned Shakespeare class pointed out is that back in Shakespeare's day, the parts of identical twins (like in Comedy of Errors) weren't necessarily played by real life identical twins. The "identical" twins looking totally different lent itself to the audience being in on the joke with mistaken identity arcs; the characters "can't tell the twins apart" but the audience can and therefore knows what's really going on.

Trans girls could relate to "having to pretend you're a man when really you're not" and trans guys can relate to "trying to pass as a man when you don’t have the background training to do so" (like we see with this reaction)
    And also, with a premise like this, no matter how comedic you make it (and to which lengths you are willing to go to avoid any homosexuality actually happening xD) you're still forced to make a commentary about "what does it take to pass as another gender" which is fun

      @@megan2386 to be fair. That could've still been her way of exploring her gender to see what felt right without making it a public thing. It's still gross to go after GNC kids and those playing with another gender like as if they are committing a crime. Yes there are legal problems with having the wrong student attending classes, but that is why you would confront the student directly and privately first with care and not be an obsessive gross creep about it. If it's an adult pretending to be a student, then maybe there'd be an actual problem, but a girl pretending to be a boy is not comparable to that.

    When I was a dumb little teenage egg I was so into this movie. Not because it was good, but because I was OBSESSED with the idea of making people think I was a boy. I even convinced myself to pretend I was mute so that I didn't have to worry about having a feminine voice. I did this all while thinking "This is a normal thing for girls to want and do. Look at the movie where girl is just pretending to be guy. This is n o r m a l."
    (Being trans is normal, but I figured out years later that if you're obsessed with passing as a man then you're probably, at the very least, man adjacent... Also, if your friends aren't willing to be your fake ex, are they really your friends?)

    I found out about the movie because I read a book also based on the Twelfth Night called All Men of Genius, that is really good but also not about being trans, and the movie was mentioned on the Wikipedia article for Twelft Night 😂

    Just a reminder to anyone who sees this that you are not less without your hair. You don't look bad without your hair. You look like a normal, natural human being, and you are beautiful for it. There's nothing wrong with trying to get it back, but don't let these companies make you feel like you're lesser for not having as much hair as they think you ought to.

    • @Theomite
      @Theomite 10 місяців тому +35

      It's not the cosmetic companies. It's that your "creep factor based on looks" skyrockets by at least 60% with losing your hair depending on the shape of your head. It goes up 80% if you keep the ring in the back, unless you dress like a monk and wear glasses. Then it drops down to 2%.

    I was actually really surprised and impressed with this movie. I think context is important. This came out in 2006, when the mainstream narrative didn't really recognize trans people and it wasn't really in most people's vocabulary yet. While this may not technically be about trans people, I think it does a really good job of introducing a lot of the ideas and themes to people in a way that could actually be received at the time and for its target demographic.
