  • Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum has one of the most unique steam locomotives in Australia, in operational condition. this is none other than Bagnall 1801, "Margaret" built in 1906.
    What makes this locomotive unique is that it is the only Bagnall preserved in Australia, the only 2 foot gauge steam locomotive operating in South Australia, the only oil burning locomotive operating in the state and the only full size saddle tank operating west of the Victoria/NSW/QLD border.
    It was built as one of two presumably identical units for use in Walhalla, Victoria on 2'6" gauge, later moving to Geelong. It was later sold to the South Australian government for use building the Glenelg breakwater, where it ended up underwater on one occasion.
    The Cobdogla to Loveday light railway needed another 2ft gauge engine, so Margaret was reqauged and sent to Cobdogla, where it remained for the rest of its working life, where it ended up getting submerged underwater again in a flood.
    It was put aside in a playground in Barmera in 1959, where it remained until 1985. The EWS began restorating the locomotive, and completed the task in 1988, where it was handed to the Cobdogla Irrigation and Steam Museum, where it remains today.
    Now, the locomotive is used on all their open days to take visitors for half hour rides around the Cobdogla area from the museum to Scotties Loop and return.

    I remember my trip vividly to the Cobdogla Steam Museum in 2014. Seems like a lifetime ago. Some of my first narrow gauge videos were filmed there. I’ve been needing to go back there for a visit or two as a few people I know volunteer there now which is nice. Did you have a ride on the Steam Traction Engine by any chance? Great work and thanks for sharing with us. Keep well. Regards, Caleb

      Yeah it's one of the best museum's i've visited. Really nice group of people who run it. My next video will be of the B6 and Z7 in action. I did have a ride on the B6, they were letting people steer it as it drove up and pulled back by the Z7. Good times

      @@VT29steamtrain by any chance do you know what track gauge this is? Is it 457mm, 2 foot, narrow or something else?

      @@RailsOfTheSouth it is 2ft gauge, the same gauge as the original cobdogla to loveday light railway

      @@VT29steamtrain do you know of any 457mm or narrow gauge railways around where you could possibly film?

      @VT29steamtrain  2 роки тому

      @@RailsOfTheSouth There are a couple 457mm/18" gauge railways in America. One is Billy Jones Wildcat RR, other is Anacortes RR (under restoration currently). Other than that I dont know of any other 18" gauge railways around the world.
