    Thank you so much! I have one of these that is 40 years old. My father bought it for my grandfather in April of 1985. It's been iffy for the past 15 years or so. Following your instructions, I took it apart. knocked off the old, dried up, hardened grease, re-lubricated and reassembled it. Works like new now!!!

    I have one that has served me well for over 50 years. Never been opened up. I think I will give it a good cleanup and greasing after watching how to do it. Thanks for the video.

      They aren’t perfect ratchets but they do the job and last if you care for them.

    Years ago I bought a box of junk tools at an auction, there was a Mac 3/8 drive ratchet in the box but it didn't work. I soaked it over the winter in wd-40 and kroil and cyclo break away mix and in the spring it was like new! I love bad tools. Nice video, lets see more.

      I agree. It's worthwhile to put love into tools so they can last. I love finding tools second hand or getting hand-me-downs to revitalize them. Many more videos like this to come. Cheers

    Your link to the wire brushes is actually the link to the picks. You may want to fix it. I just clicked through to Amazon on each of your items.
    I have an earlier version of the 43784 labeled "Patent Pending," which I presume works pretty much the same way. I'll find out when my snap ring pliers get here.
    Great video! Very helpful. Thank you!

      I'm glad you found the video helpful! I'm looking forward to hearing how your repair goes. I updated the link. Thanks for catching that.

      @learnsavediy Hello my friend!
      All the tools & grease came in from Amazon today - bought through your links. Did the cleanup and lube as you showed, and it's good as new! Took about 25 minutes.
      I used a thin flat comedone extractor to hold the bearing. I also dropped the pawl in 180° out of alignment and then rotated it around in the wrench to the correct position. Read that tip in a comment somewhere and it worked great.
      Also, if you've got a thin flat metal insert from an old windshield wiper, you can easily bend it to become a ball-bearing holder. Just use a punch to indent it in the right spot, and bend it into shape.
      My 3/8 inch Craftsman socket wrench is part of a metric socket set I got at Sears decades ago. It is marked:
      -V- 43784 with "Patent Pending" on it.
      I have also seen these 43784s with no patent reference at all and with a patent number. IDK the year it was made or the order in which these different versions were produced.
      FWIW, I found numerous 43784s & other Craftsman models on eBay for between $15 & $30.00 or so, in various conditions. Also found "New Old Stock" repair kits with all the parts included for ~$30 - $50.00, in case your wrench is damaged internally.
      Thanks so much!
      Kind regards,
      John

    Subscribed.
    I have the same ratchet, except it skips in one direction, but works in the other.
    I assume the teeth are worn in the direction it slips, and I was trying to swap it via the warranty thing, but after seeing your video, I may open it up and give it a go.
    Aside from that, I enjoyed the video in general - and I hope your channel blows up (that you strike UA-cam gold).
    I hope you make more of these. I'll start going through your other videos as well.
    All the best and thanks again for sharing this video!

      You’re too kind! I do have many more so feel free to check them out (and welcome to the community)! I prefer these than the new Chinese ones so I’d say it’s worth checking!

    Great video, I was just given both 1/2 in and 3/8 craftsman ratchet like these and was wondering if I could rebuild them. Way less parts compared to modern ratchets.

    I have found that lubing ratchets up with heavy grease just causes more harm than good. I just use a few drops of good old 10W30 engine oil. You just need to apply it every so often and your ratchets will last for a very long time. For me about 4 or 5 times a year works best. The same goes for ratcheting wrenches. Plus you don't need to take the ratchet apart to keep it lubed and working well.

    • @learnsavediy
      @learnsavediy  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for the tip. I’m going to start using oil instead and see how that feels.

    Great video. Mine broke today. I think it was the retaining clip on the direction lever. Where can I get a replacement?

    • @learnsavediy
      @learnsavediy  7 місяців тому

      It's tough to find rebuild kits or just individual parts on Amazon but sometimes you'll have luck by searching eBay with the model number of the ratchet.

    What every good mechanic should do.Tool maintenance and correct use.The actual kits for those ratchets have been obsolete for 20 years now.Best lube is really never seize copper based compound a very thin coat works.Also,other than that an excessive amount of lube just picks up dirt.

    Keeping the ball bearing held down while you put the pawl in can be a real pain in the ass, for my 1/4" drive the compressed spring will stick out enough to keep the ball bearing in the way when trying to insert the pawl...
    This video shows a trick using a piece of solid copper wire that worked for me

      @@learnsavediy It was my dad's ratchet. He probably hasn't used it for years and the switch wasn't working properly. It was filthy inside haha but not really worn. Would have been much easier to replace it with a new one, but there's something so satisfying about finally fixing it

      The ratchets aren't good but I use their sockets all the time. They've been good to me. Can't all be winners.
