Jack DeJohnette, too. Even Mitch Mitchell (with Jimi Hendrix.) You are right. These guys make drums sing. They are "painters" with drumsticks (or brushes or tympani sticks.) Artists😅
Roach,Rich, and Morello were huge influences on Bonham. "The Drum Also Waltzes" was one of Bonham's homage to Roach that he performed with Zepplin earler in their day. That solo eventually led to Moby Dick for Bonham. If you listen to "Dazed and Confused" it follows the same structure.
Yeah, try it yourself sometime. The "Drum Also Waltzes" This is one of the more legendary drum solos of all of jazz. The clip above is just one small snippet and a demonstration of a larger piece. A lot of people today seem to think that if it isn't the Mike Mangini "Fastest drums on earth" approach then it sucks. Shows how uneducated we have become.
Neil specifically cited this particular piece as the impetus behind his "waltz section" of his drum solo in "anatomy of a drum solo". Granted, he was referring to the 50s when Max first created this, but people today are so impressed with speed and flailing that they refuse to realize that everything popular today started with simple building blocks such as this more then 50 years ago.
Many many people who listened to this knew that Max was the man. The late great Dizzy Gillespie called Max the Painter simple because Max gave you a melodic bouquet of percussive sounds that was Max and of course he had the sonic creativity down to a nut shell
amazing...I dig the Max Roach videos here. I just bought my first kit three months ago. Lot of my fave drummers like Peart list Max as their influences. Id never heard/seen him till now on UTube. This vid proves what u can do on a 5pc kit! instead of having 10 Zildjians and a double bass..etc.
Im a drummer myself, i think the hardest technique he does here is when he does the snare and symbols and he always hits the symbols so lightly and cleanly. great solo.
from a technical standpoint there's a ton of drummers who are a lot better then him, but when it comes down to it, it's all about music!! He is one very musical dude, super creative, and just awesome.
Max Roach is a beast. I enjoy all types of drumming, it's all very skillful, I wish I could drum like this. I think Grant McFarland of This or the Apocalypse is great too, but he more than likely couldn't do this, and Max more than likely couldn't play "Mauna Kea" either. You can't really compare hard rock and metal drummers like Grant McFarland or Matt Greiner or even Travis Barker to jazz drummers like Roach, Blakey, or big banders like Rich and Krupa. Just different styles, but all awesome.
I’m sorry,I’m expecting a lot of abuse here but I’m struggling to get anything out of this and other clips of Max playing. He’s a great player no doubt about that but I just don’t get anything out of this or his playing in general. Sorry.
that fleetfox dude must be listening to a lot of fleet foxes.. bad folk/rock? get some class and wake up, man. jazz owns you. you dont even know it! i hope you atleast do some research
I will never be comfortable with a Jazz drummer using matched grip as his main grip. Here, Max's buzz roll sounds like a high school kid. Very poor. What the hell was he thinking, changing over to matched grip like this? Instead of becoming a better player as time went on, he was far worse than he was in the 50's and 60's. What the hell?
Max is probobly the most melodic and creative drummer around. He makes the drums sing. He is a genius.
Jack DeJohnette, too. Even Mitch Mitchell (with Jimi Hendrix.) You are right. These guys make drums sing. They are "painters" with drumsticks (or brushes or tympani sticks.) Artists😅
RIP Max.........the world is a sadder place with your passing. thanks for sharing your gift with us. we owe you such a debt of gratitude.

I've always enjoyed Max Roach. He approaches the set like it is a real musical instrument. Not many people can play as artistically as he.

In my opinion this guy is the best and most musical drummer in history
Five-starred and favorited! Thank you so much for sharing!
Max shows he's a true master again here!
Many many people who listened to this knew that Max was the man. The late great Dizzy Gillespie called Max the Painter simple because Max gave you a melodic bouquet of percussive sounds that was Max and of course he had the sonic creativity down to a nut shell
one of the most creative drummers
Bonham played this in Moby Dick, at Royal Albert Hall.
Cool. Nice coordination
he still gots it awsome
well said, people who don't have a taste in jazz won't enjoy this as much as people who do.
the thing he does with the bass and high-hat beat, John Bonham does the same on Moby Dick 1970.
yeah :)
Moby Dick was released in 1969 =)

haha, i had forgotten about this.
its my new old favourite too!
he has a rlly unique style
He did.
O som que ele consegue tirar da bateria realmente é muito musical!
Bonzo plays this idea in Seattle, July 17, 1977. Same 1 2 3 feel with different attack emphasized between tom-toms, bass-drum and snare.
Exactly. Same deal with Miiles. He could play at 240 bpm when he chose, but his less is more approach made him different.
nice sounding drumset fantastic drummer
Bonzo totally used the "1 e and a" pattern in the live Moby Dick solo! That's fuckin cool!
oh yeah nice catch
if you practise evry day with the time you gone to be good
and i say is a long time, look at him he is old and experienced
he reminds me of barack obama. great solo, i am quitting metal and starting jazz drumming this is a great solo
Im a drummer myself, i think the hardest technique he does here is when he does the snare and symbols and he always hits the symbols so lightly and cleanly. great solo.
im inclined to agree
Ya gotta laugh at the "In between the toms" tappin' ; )
OUTSIDE THE BOX
steady
yeah..
Beastly. Truely use of a drumset right here.
hahahaha. thumbs up to you, sir.
Hey, John Bonham references this solo in the version of Moby Dick on the Led Zeppelin DVD, doesn't he?
rip!
Bonham doing combos with that, god!, im still sucking to do this simple rythm
watch buddy rich circa 1967 now thats a fucking solo thats not boring!!!!!!!
i've never seen a drum solo... within a drum solo
from a technical standpoint there's a ton of drummers who are a lot better then him, but when it comes down to it, it's all about music!! He is one very musical dude, super creative, and just awesome.
@Jakeysevenfold.. LMMFAO !!! Good one! The way it sounded, it could of been ..!
The title is "The Drum Also Waltzes"
*sudden sprinting*

haha, this is my new favourite UA-cam argument!
i think neil peart got his solo idea from max!!
Hahaha atleast he didn't hold them over his head in a X shape and yell I love you new york! Although that would have been awesome to see HAHA
lol just realized, he looks kinda like morgan freeman
I am from Alabama we might be related.
top hi hat is smaller, interesting.....
I agree with your opinion of this video, but he's still a great drummer.
Maybe it's a good video meant for those who can't do 3/4 and want to transcribe to learn and get better at 3/4? Because that's what I'm about to do.
@jeremyw5 LMFAO!
what the fuck is that supposed to mean
what is there to know about drums that makes this video look so great huh?
i dont know im not drummer
Prove it, oh wait you cant i win k thx!
hey HarmonicMinorJ, you don't know what you're talking about. A solo is a solo.
I’m sorry,I’m expecting a lot of abuse here but I’m struggling to get anything out of this and other clips of Max playing. He’s a great player no doubt about that but I just don’t get anything out of this or his playing in general. Sorry.
Im just saying this solo was frekaing boring. Not saying he sucks lol.
how dare you.......lol....

bonham used this shit respectively all the time
im not a fan of them but its spelled linkin park

....every orifice
Max - not musical? ha!
that fleetfox dude must be listening to a lot of fleet foxes.. bad folk/rock? get some class and wake up, man. jazz owns you. you dont even know it!

umm... not a fan of Linken Park and not a rock player either.
