She speaks Latvian, German and English anyone know of any others? Must be difficult learning songs in a language you cannot speak; but then Elina is a remarkable person: Beautiful woman, beautiful voice, actress, linguist and she can handle the fame.

She speaks Latvian, Russian, German, English, Italian and Spanish. She also understands French quite well, but she said a while ago that she still has "a blockage", she called it, so she doesn't really speak it.

When Elina sings with her husband conducting, as in this video, she is obviously "firing on all cylinders" and he has to run to keep up as you can plainly see! This is what happens when a husband asks his wife to use all of her powerful voice. What a spectacular pair!

Comparing Elina and Katherine Jenkins is something like to compare Ferrari vs Fiat. Both are cars, both can be driven, both can even be red, but here the similarities are over. They simply are in absolutely different classes.

Astonishing! This interpretation of Canson Boheme, because it is totally totally wild, really seized me! As much as I am surprised that the orchestra did not smashed their instruments on the floor and tore down the hall. And the singer did not biting the conductor at the end of concert. Heavy metal and other trash metals are a gentle "strum, strum" on the guitars in comparison with THIS Carmen.
Real Hard Core! YOU ARE GREAT...

@steps222: Karel was born in London and yes Wiki say he is a Gibraltarian but Gibraltar is a British territory and has been under British rule since 1713. So his native tongue would be English. The Gibraltarians are self-governing but they still consider themselves British and the UN considers Gibraltar part of the South West England Constituency. Yes, he is married to Elina Garanca. Lucky guy.

Wikipedia gives his name as Karel Mark Chichon. At the very beginning of the video, it's given differently, probably in French, or in his native tongue--he's from Gibralter. He's her hubby.

@bpetii1 I've always found Katherine to sing with plenty of emotion, but fair enough if you prefer Elina. I prefer Katherine's voice, as personal preference. I found her high notes good in the versions I've listened to - she hits them perfectly and doesn't struggle. I don't think Katherine needs to be an actual opera singer to sing an aria well - she sings the same songs but hasn't been in an opera.
I've only really heard Elina a few times and mostly when dueting with Anna Netrebko.

Do you even have a clue what the words of these aria say? A "laid back approach"? Hello? It's not a random gypsy song, it's a aria sung by Carmen - a passionate vulgar gypsy, she sings this in a tavern with other people dancing. It talks about dancing that starts then gets faster, and then everyone joins, and gets passionate and hot and sweaty. "All hot and crazy, fevered, sweating, Laid back???
Intoxicated, they were letting The whirlwind carry them along!"
    The whirlwind carry them along!".
