Natasha is Black Widow and if you remeber the guy with the arrow and bow in Thor, he is Hawkeye. Clint and Natasha are "just" humans but they are part of the Avengers. There are 6 original Avengers. You guys will only keep loving these more!
This movie did such a good job of capturing the retro, wholesome vibe - which is also Steve's own vibe, too. Can't wait to see you experience The Avengers! :)
Chris Evans was spectacular as Steve Rogers/Captain America. In the world of Marvel Comics, he was also great as Johnny Storm/Human Torch from Fantastic 4. A complete contrast in personalities with those characters. Captain America: Down-to-Earth leader Human Torch: Hotshot, womanizing adrenaline junkie
If you remember in Iron Man 2, Fury tells Tony that Howard was one of the founding members of SHIELD. Now we're seeing a bit of that in this movie, which is just a cool little tie.
The Captain America comic started during WWII, so that's where they set the origin story. Cap was always one of my favorites and they did a good job showing that he was a 'good man' who became a super hero but didn't lose his sense of self. The Red Skull was one of his original villains so that's why Schmidt looked the way he did.
The super soldier serum was introduced in The Incredible Hulk when Thaddeus Ross had those blue vials and used some on Emil Blonsky. Remember the quote Erskin said "Good becomes great, bad becomes worse". When they gave Emil the serum he became worse than he was. Also the tesseract is an important item in the MCU as are others that you guys will discover in time. Johan Schmidt is also known as Red Skull
Yes, although Ross' serum from the Incredible Hulk wasn't Dr Erskine's serum.. it was a different serum developed by the army after Dr Erskine's death- it had to be administered in two stages, and had significant negative side effects.
Hulk, Ironman, Captain America, Thor, Natasha Romanov (Black Widow) and Clint Barton (Hawkeye). You've seen Barton for a smidge in the science tent scene in Thor.
It took me a moment to realize you meant to say "not all his roles are as bad guys". I was sitting here, thinking, "do they really think his role in the Matrix was a bad role?". lol I'm slow
You guys make me smile from the very first second you’re on, you just spread happiness so easily. You are on such an amazing journey with Marvel. I look forward to Mondays nights. 😊
Yeah the reason we got a trailer for Avengers here is this is what is referred to in the MCU as "Phase 1", it was Marvel's plan to do something that hadn't been done yet...create a successful blockbuster ensemble Superhero movie. Now there were the X-Men movies before all of this, but the issue with those is they basically became "Wolverine and Friends", Hugh Jackman was the star and everyone else was the supporting cast. The idea of The Avengers movie was that no one character was the centerpiece, everyone had their chance to shine and were equally important to the film...so Phase 1's job was to give us these solo films, get you to care about these characters, then they come together for the big team up movie and do something that the world had never seen before...and as you'll see next week. Marvel nailed it.
When the editor catches the "Hydra" pistol flash on the "Red Skull's face, I like to commend them, because it's such a repeated and iconic frame in portrayals of the "Red Skull" and a Jack Kirby classic.
4:44 Schmidt’s line about the Fuhrer digs for trinkets in the desert” can be a a reference to the Indiana Jones movie Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which Nazis search for the Ark of the Covenant in the Egyptian desert. Joe Johnson the director of this movie also worked on Raiders of the Lost Ark
Great reaction (again). I recall when I was little and read the Capt America comics, and watched the Capt America cartoons ... I didn't care for him. Then THIS movie came out and I was all....OHHHHH YEAH!!!
The bit where Peggy involuntarily just reaches out to touch Cap's amazing Super-Soldier Pecs was improvised by the actress, as that was the first time the actress saw Chris Evans' physique and well... daaaaang. :)
In terms of power, I think in the MCU they're trying to draw a line from the cube "from Odin's treasure room" to Hydra, and from Hydra to Howard Stark. Howard Stark builds the arc reactor, which Tony then uses to power his armor. So that's one line of power. There's a second line, though, where before Howard Stark gets Hydra technology, he works with Dr. Erskine on the combination of the super soldier serum and the Vita Rays, which is how Captain America gets his power. Decades later, a different super soldier serum and gamma rays are used to transform Banner into the Hulk. Then you have the non-powered agents with their gadgets belonging to SHIELD. And completely separate, you have the Asgardians, who are basically super beings.
29:35 This machine actually existed. It's the Focke-Wulf Triebflügel, or Triebflügeljäger, literally meaning "thrust-wing hunter", was a German concept for an aircraft designed in 1944, during the final phase of World War II, as a defense against the ever-increasing Allied bombing raids on central Germany. It was a vertical take-off and landing tailsitter interceptor design for local defense of important factories or areas which had small or no airfields. My inner nerd loves it! 45:03 "Opening a portal to another realm" had me thinking when I first saw this scene ... DO all the people zapped by the tesseract powered weapons get sent there too?
Cap's team of soldiers is the Howling Commandos. Dum Dum Dugan (with the bowler hat) is my favorite. In the comics, they were commanded by Nick Fury rather than Cap. Also in the comics, Bucky was Cap's kid sidekick (like Robin to Batman).
In Marvel, realms actually refers to different planets, in a later Thor movie this notion gets referenced by someone. The fact implies that the 9 realms are kind like...states? that Odin governs
Great reaction and such a great movie. When you get a chance check out the Agent Carter TV series. I wish it had a longer run but worth checking out none the less.
Hehe just fyi, that guy isn't the one who played Filch in Harry Potter. That would be David Bradley. If you watched Game of Thrones at all, he also plays Lord Walder Frey.
Fun fact: the shot at the World's Fair, there's a human in glass display with the name Phineas T. Horton on it. This is an Android that became the first Human Torch. He fought with Captain America and Namor, The Sub Mariner, as The Invaders during WW2. The 107th in this film were actually Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos, subbing Bucky Barnes for Nick Fury.
You're doing a far better job at putting together the pieces than I did on first watching all of them. I guess if one had read the comics, one would be familiar with so many little elemets, but I never did. I love your enthusiasm for the whole thing so far!
That end credit scene in the Thor movie was just suggesting Loki was controlling Dr. Selvik but the in Cannon excuse for that scene what's the fact that Loki was manipulating the Eric Selvik by whispering ideas in his ear with his own voice. So every time Dr Sullivan got an idea on how to manipulate the tesseract energy it would actually loki telling him instructions on how to use the cosmic cube.
Captain America is my favorite hero in the MCU without exception. Not my favorite _character_... but that's a conversation for much further down the line. Just the strength of character to stand up for what he believes is right despite the efforts of the people around him to get him to compromise his values... really resonates with me. Steve and Peggy are just one of those wonderfully tragic pairs... and the fact of the matter is that what they have isn't about what the serum brings. It is about who each of them are on a very fundamental level.

In the comics, the Tesseract was called "The Cosmic Cube", which is a pretty dumb name. "Tesseract" is much cooler. And it's not just a made-up word. A tesseract is a mathematical term for the four-dimensional analog of a cube. In two dimensions, you have the square; in three dimensions, the cube; and in four dimensions, the tesseract. For other dimensions they often use the term "hypercube", so a tesseract is also called a "4-D hypercube", and you can have 5-D, 6-D, etc., hypercubes, and sometimes these terms are shortened to just "5-cube", "6-cube", etc. The Agent Carter TV series was not very good, IMO.
