Over the years I've been working on saws, you'd be surprised how often the owners would come in with complaints of the chain won't turn, it won't cut or it won't start. The 1st is the chain brake's on, the 2nd is the chain's dull & the last is usually they didn't read the manual on starting. Some people shouldn't be allowed to use such equipment, no mindset for it. I know people who have used saws for many years & still got hurt. I know of cases where they used no mix at all & then wanted warranty. If there was warranty performed, the dealer did it on his own. That led to problems b/c anything from that point on was expected to be fixed free. Then there was the chain's on backwards & IT CAME THAT WAY! Sure it did! I could go on & on but it'd be boring. Some were legitiment complaints but but the ones that weren't far outweighed those.
Many years ago a guy came in & set his saw on the counter. Never saw him before & the more he talked the madder he got. The saw was an Xmas present from the year before & had never been started. As he pulled it out of it's case, it was covered with mud. His son had used it, w/o permission, to install an electronic dog fence & it came back to dad this way. Dad wanted it fixed & the bill would be paid for by the son, lol! It took a new chain, bar & sprocket plus a thorough cleaning. Never saw that man ever again. Btw, it should've worked fine for the dog fence.

The 017 is the older version of the 170. 30CC & with a 16" bar which put it @ the end of it's power band. Better with a 14". They were the entry saw of Stihl back then. Cheap was the word & they weren't great on longevity. If you find 1 used that has compression above 130, it'd be a good saw.

It's a common practice for some brands, especially the smaller & cheaper saws, to come overbarred with a skip-tooth chain. Marketing ploy, that way the customer will think they're more saw for less price. Poulan used to do that & it cost 'em in the long run. When they manufacture something so cheap that it looks too good to be true, it usually is.
I just picked one of these up for free, it has good compression and spark but the only trouble I have with it is that it floods every time I try to start it and the exhaust fills with petrol. I'm gonna have to find a manual online and see what I'm doing wrong... interesting comments though.

omg please on the video you show us very clearly the coil but it's dirty i can't read the number ..... it would be nice if you can take a second to pass your finger on there and show us the number. meanwhile does anyone have it ? i can't find it on the internet anywhere and that's the part I'm looking for.. please anyone and thanks
