Gene Hoglan drum play through of Strapping Young Lad track Skeksis. From Gene's brand new DVD The Atomic Clock : The Clock Strikes Two.
"Devin and I wrote the tune in late summer, early fall of '04, at this shabby downtown Vancouver rehearsal space that kinda represented where we were both at mentally in our lives.
I remember him mentioning that he'd love to have an 'Almighty PunchDrunk' (one of my all-time favorite bands whom I've also drummed for) feel and vibe to whatever was about to come out of us. To me, that meant to include, 'the PunchDrunk beat', which is this great, samba-esque, Latin-feel beat (that I am sure has a name-I'd love to know it) which PD proudly stole from the legendary Canadian band The Smalls. I'm sure you've all heard it a time or two.
Dev and I played around the beat the whole song, getting closest to it in the chorus, then rrreally sinking into it in the last minute or so, in the part I refer to as the 'girl fight' part, because that's what It sounds like Dev is saying there. It is such a fun beat to play, and a real satisfying denouement to the song. A moment of crowning glory to a ruling tune.
The version on the new DVD is a completely re-envisioned mix, where the vocals and samples are absent, really bringing out the rhythm guitars and basic tracks. "
The Wait is Over!

GENE HOGLAN's highly-anticipated second DVD, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two, is due to be released Feb. 3, 2017 and will feature the Clock himself breaking down some of his favorite beats, telling stories and playing along with tracks from several of his most legendary projects, including Strapping Young Lad, Testament and Death.

Interviews include Scott Ian and Frank Bello of Anthrax, 3 Inches of Blood/Revocation's Ash Pearson, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, Chuck Billy, Alex Skolnick, and Eric Peterson of Testament, and more.
Featured Tracks:
Testament: "Rise Up," "Native Blood"

All audio was produced, engineered and mixed by Rob Shallcross with audio mastering from Greg Reely.
He's the Buddha of drumming. He sits there in his enlightened fatness and plays lightning fast with godlike technique. I love this guy. The bald dude is cool too.
Ya he’s pretty good.
this comment aged well , considering how much weight he has lost now
@@stiliyo37 It actually amazing how much weight he has lost, I'm glad for him he looks much healthier now too
@@fedora997 I couldn’t believe, he looks amazing!
He ain’t overweight anymore
Devin Townsend plays with so many different musicians these days. But, I’d love to hear just a Devin and Hoglan album one of these days. They were great together.
Dev joked about that saying he still loves Gene but he can't afford him anymore 😂
Hoglan used to be in Death for chrissakes! A legend among men
Strapping Young Lad was a supergroup in its own right. Devin. Jed. Gene. Byron. Every single fucking one of them. Fucking incredible musicians.
This man approached me and shook my hand...back in 2016...one of the greatest moments of my life
Haven't washed it since...
@@Erotified I have a live drumstick from him. Have worked as a security in the HYDE PARK in Osnabrück, Germany in the 90th. Such a nice guy.
The Atomic Clock still got it. Those shoes from 1947.
What? No way.
he likes to go bowling after he drums
@@shamadana1 Haha, made one year before Fluvog was born.
Those shoes helped an old woman cross the road safely in 1947. Now they are retired, time to party against some kick drums
I've seen many great comments on youtube during my years, but this takes the price... seriously
When the drummer starts head banging, that's how you know it's a good song
5:13 his facial expression is like: "bitch i'm fabulous"
The album where Devin fell off the meds then wrote with a seven string.
Behold skeksis
mushrooms bruh
@@fromthesky1050 Devin is very open about his mental health aswell as the status of only being addicted to coffee and being awesome. Actually helped a lot with my own mental health to hear him talk about it in his vlogs
He never had bipolar in the first place, he said it turned out he was misdiagnosed. It was simply a reaction to abusing psychedelics, alcohol and weed, which he probably didn't tell the doctor he was doing such.
The first time I saw Strapping Young Lad was when they opened for Meshuggah in 2003 on their Nothing tour. It's the best show I can ever recall seeing.
Remember that tour two of my all time favs, it was sonically almost too much to absorb in 1 night 2 beasts of bands
Gene is inhuman, but it's also cool to actually get to hear what the guitars are doing without being buried under all those layers of synths!!! Gene & Dev were un-fucking-real.
sounds like i need to check out more of strapping young lad
Mr yeah you do.
City, it's fucking mint!
Mr Yes, check out City. That album is the epitome of extreme metal!
I love City and the self titled album. Everyone really seems to dig Alien though, which I would have to put as 3rd for me... Though I do love Imperial and Zen.
ALLL HAILLLL THE NEWWWW FLESH!!!!!
You know, I love most, if not all of the bands Gene's been in, but none of them have really allowed him to stretch his legs and explore the outer reaches of his talents the way SYL did. It really was the perfect band for him and his style.
What about Death? Feel like he went ham on those tracks
@@iLLuzion1st Hate to say it, but Death was pretty restrictive for a guy like Gene. They were great and all, and groundbreaking for the time, but nowhere *near* as heavy and unconventional as SYL
Interesting viewpoint. Are saying that even though Death were out of the box and new at the time, that Gene's skillset is even further in that direction in terms of odd time sigs and experimental sounds and overall speed? @@MFKR696
That fill at 4:17 is nuts
Glad I'm not the only one who freaked out there. What the heck even was that? 🥶
@@nerothosthe fill is:
Kick-kick-RTom-LTom-snare-snare-Rtom-Ltom
Kick-kick-RTom-LTom-snare-snare-Rtom-Ltom
Kick-kick-double crash
And right back into the 1/4 note skank beat. Beautiful fill
It's absolutely nauseating how easy he makes this look. He could at least have the decency to not be so damn casual.
If he did, he wouldn't be Gene Hoglan.
His playing, foot technique and choice of pedals proves that a lot of people are full of excuses.
He's called the atomic clock. It's not like evryone has that nickname
Camcos haven't been in production for like 20 years right? Dude has used marching sticks in the past too
Yeah, it's always sad to see musicians who look at their instrument for an excuse as to why they can't play a certain thing, like: "My pedals are shit, thats why i am not fast enough. I need this 900 Dollar Trick-Pedal" or "my fretboard isn't slim enough, that's why I can't play this - with a better guitar i would totally be able to play this". Sure, there is a limiting factor in the grade of your instrument. But you can always even out a crappy instrument/crappy hardware with good technique. That's why a good musician can make a 100 Dollar guitar sound awesome and a good drummer can show you his speedy double-bass fill on a 50 Dollar pedal.
You completely hit the nail on the head, dude! Exactly what I was talking about. It's always the gear's fault on why they can't play something. I've been hearing these excuses since 6th grade, as I'm sure we all have. Haha. Everyone is always worried about upgrades instead of getting better.
I mean, if you really hit a wall and can't progress because your crappy pedal would not allow you to go beyond a certain point - go ahead and buy yourself a new, better pedal. But at least try to go as far as possible with the gear you have. Most of the time you struggle it's not the gear - it's you. To be aware of this can save you a ton of money.
I love this guy. Made death symbolic one of the best metal albums that will ever exist!
Can't agree more. Total masterpiece.
Love that album. Saw them at the Astoria 2 in London on the Symbolic tour. Best concert ever!
Yes!
Hes best work to date was on Symbolic. I never liked SYL since its musically poor and sounds cold(My opinion), but Death´s Symbolic is a completely different story, amazing riffs, melodies and Gene´s drumming is phenomenal.
Damn his flame boots are still holding out.
The flame boots ARE Gene Hoglan. The guy is just there to hold the drum sticks.
How long has he had those things anyway?
Flame boots, thanks for clearing that up. I thought they were OAF bowling shoes but what do I f'ing know!
@@teedub127 I believe that they are specifically Doc Marten's with the sweet flames on the sides.
@@StanleyRodgers Thank you, I don't think I've ever seen a pair of flamed Doc Martins. Personally I play barefoot and for the life of me I don't understand how anyone can carry a bass drum beat, let alone one like he plays in the video, with shoes on.
I wish SYL performed again. Their intensity is unmatched.
Syl was waaayyyyy beyond anyone's comprehensive at that time. I saw them live right after this album came out and everyone was so stunned the crowd just stood there in awe and could do nothing but clap. Years later everyone finally realizes how in fuckin credible these tracks are sadly long after the band split ways
I've seen a lot of videos from Gene playing... I know he enjoyed every song that he plays (
otherwise he wouldn't do that) , BUT everytime he plays a SYL song, he looks like he enjoy those more than others...
Because Devin unleashed him, he wasn't held back at all or had to fit any style
True, I think SYL has been the only band he's had complete freedom to do what he wants with his drumming and it clearly wasn't a mistake
This song kicks so much ass. Alien is such a great record. Devin and Gene is probably my favorite drummer songwriter pairing in metal history. Man they made great music together.
100%
Alien is the best SYL album indeed
This is way harder than it looks
Pericles Underhill ..... as is often the case making it look easy is the hardest part ! Great musicians often make hard as fuck stuff seem easy !
Then it must be basically impossible lol
Pericles Underhill well it looks pretty hard haha
Doesn't look easy to me 😂
it looks hard but he's very good so he makes it looks easy and boring by his face expressions
The ending of this song is the most powerful thing I've ever heard
Can't believe I only just noticed that he's not just ambidextrous but also ambipedal - this man is built different
He's truly a human drum machine
The atomic clock
Gene looks like he lost a bunch of weight. Good for him, that's awesome.
Hahaha, I was going to say the same thing.
i cant imagine how he could put it on, his legs just burned like 2k calories.
He stated in an interview he's off the energy drinks and onto health food now. Good on him.
Yeah his wife jumped his shit after he came back from a tour in Brazil weighing like 410. Doc told him he had type 2 diabetes. He got his health in order. He covered it in a dean delray podcast.
He has Hog in his name. It's hard to imagine him being thin.
He did lose a lot of weight though. It is a pat on the back for him.
I saw him play with Death in 1993 on the Individual Thought Patterns tour in San Francisco. Unbelivable drummer. I could not believe how someone so big- He was much larger than now, could be so fast, technical and precise. I am not making fun of his size, either. Just an incredible player!
What I enjoyed most about this video is actually watching Gene enjoying the shit out of this while playing it and having so much fun, it's probably been more than 10 years since he last played this song and it just gave me the vibe that he liked the idea of playing the song again for an official DVD. Although we all know Strapping is not coming back, this makes me think that if it were for strapping to come back, Gene would be the first one to hop in.
I really wanna see him play "Almost Again" from Strapping Young Lad.
interresting track drumming-wise
That's my # 1 youtube drum video wet dream.
same.
His drumming compliments that song so well, seconded.
I hunted and hunted for drum playthroughs of that song and not one single person I found got it 100% right. If they could get the left-leading funkiness of the verses down they couldn't do the blasts right and vice-versa.
Dear Atomic Clock, I would like to watch you play _Aftermath_. PLEASE
so glad to see Gene keeping it real after the tragic loss of Chuck
He is the only person on the planet who could play a SYL song and look totally relaxed doing it.
Tomas Haake has entered the chat
I don't know any extreme metal drummer that has more feel and flow in his or her playing than the Atomic Clock. So fluent, omg
Been watching this video for 3 yrs, still one of my favorites, if I could hit like every time I watched it,it would have another 1,000 likes!!!..Gene's the Man!!!
Damn I miss SYL!!!
Wanted to like that post, but I can't.... It has been liked 66 times....
First time I saw Gene live was a double set of Strapping Young Lad and Testament. A Drum God.
Imagine pounding through an insane section like 4:00 - 6:00 with a relaxed smile of contentment on your face. What an absolute machine
We need Gene and Dev back together 🤭 miss SYL 🥺
They did on Devin's Crappy Hallowen
Am I the only one that began to sing as soon as the part kicked in? Like years of not listening to this track I still remember the lyrics and odd ways Dev sang on this. lol
Yes.
It's like I'm automatic.
Automatically drawn!
I'd like to say I'm sorry
I do not know the words
4:44 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
This music controls My awkward soul.
Realising a multiverse in just one day!
Devins music is great to listen to because it’s so rhythmically driven. It’s why his drummers are always so killer. For me Gene and Morgan agren are the kings of that hill. Terrific playing.
Nothing beats watching the master perform his own work. Especially one as glorious as Skeksis.
When you see Gene Hoglan smiling while playing, you know the song is kicking ass!!! He's the best.
The KING of double bass!......PERIOD!
Lars invented double bass so he's still the King.
and george kolias
@@jeremycubs8331 I love Lars, but pretty sure double bass was invented back in the jazz days.
I never get bored of watching this performance
this is also really interesting for getting to clear so much clearer a mix of the guitar work in this song.
Deet Cologon Definitely. I heard things I've never really noticed before and I've listened to 'Alien' a lot.
+Carbin Monoxide totally! All the other ambient wall-of-sound elements mask so much of what's going on with the guitars.
I was just saying this same thing! there's so much going on with any Dev song... some parts were like I was hearing them for the first time!
Finally some help for trying to transcribe and learn this madness!
I think if you take the keyboards and other effects it becomes way more clear. I've always struggled on what's really going on with the guitar too. this is badass.
I realized while viewing this as an "instrumental" the part near the end actually is the music from the dark crystal and I never put 2 and 2 together. All the more respect for mean gene and Syl.
Skeksis are a species in The Dark Crystal.
@@trevorphilips9484 Which happens to be Devin's favourite movie, and inspired him to create the Ziltoid puppet because he wanted to be a puppeteer as a kid after watching that film.
Do you recall which piece of music it is? I was thinking of listening to the OST.
Pretty much from 5:20 on is the main theme just slightly faster.

@@Bizkit9d8 Thank you for the reply and the link. I thought this might be the part you were refering to. It's easier to discern in Gene's Skesis playthru ^_^
It's not only tight, but extremely musical. I could just listen to the drum tracks off the album and be just fine.
You can't fuck with this one of the best drummers out there
Absolutely fucking insane. Just like the entirety of this godlike album.
This song grooves so hard.
this is my favorite SYL song. thanks Gene! way awesome to see it played.
Gene, just wanna thank you not only for putting these out but also just being the backbone of some of my favourite songs. Rock on, brother!
Man oh man! I miss SYL so bad! Good job Gene!!!
Ah, good times, I remember getting Alien in a store on the first day of sale in the early morning when they haven't even unpacked the boxes properly. :) Imperial Skeksis Shitstorm combo just slayed my ears. Gene blew us all away with the info on how he prepared to play Shitstorm live: by playing the entire set with weights on his calfs and when Shitstorm came towards the end of the set, his drum tech stripped the weights off of him and the legs just flew at that 230 bpm madness! I ended arranging Shitstorm for my mandolin orchestra and when Dev came to Ljubljana years later with DTP, I met him and gave him the score and had him sign one for me.
Now I need to hear your mandolin orchestra version
Gene is making this look easy. I guess that proves that he is a truly great drummer. I dont even play drums but i Still enjoy watching this.
A masterpiece of metal. Hogland goes beyond what drumming is, that's why him and Dev could write this masterpiece. What ever means necessary to express what's in your mind.
Hoglan and Haake = drumming gods
Such an epic song from such an epic album. SYL was so good
Nothing but sheer awesomeness and mad creativity displayed here. Skeksis is a monstrous song and Gene does just what he does best : make those jaws drop like flies.
Gene, The Man.... So brutally groovy
This is music porn. Mmmmm...so good!
Oh, I know. Was thinking I could basically jerk off to this!
Nicolas Vincent ...
"basically"? it's mandatory!
Makes no sense.....Porn is terrible
@@Hhhlll7778 Makes sense to me... this track is terrible. Gene is a phenomenal drummer, but his talents are wasted here.
Fuck is this brilliant...my favorite SYL song (of many greats...)...thanks for sharing Gene! And, yes, as someone else said...amazing to hear a different mix of the guitars. You're a fucking legend, sir. Carry on.
f...g cardio!! never seen anything like that, super super high level performance and his precision is just impeccable
Your technique is immaculate. I cannot imagine playing in that footware!
Those double-bass triplets under the “reggatón” ostinato is …”tasty”😁
Kickass song too! I love everything about this, so much.
Seriously, Gene Hoglan is awesome. And it's so cool to watch the liberation of someone who learned to play southpaw.
I really wish I learned to play left-handed. That looks like it just opens up the entire damn drumset!
or you can just play open right handed
I miss the SYL. I never got a chance to see them live.
Maybe the most satisfying drum playthrough ever. Damn.
It's always fun watching you play Gene because you make it look sooooo damn easy!!! 😅
I love how he seems to go into a zen state when he plays.
I love how Gene gets so much by doing so little.
Ever since I heard Gene Hoglan play on Individual thought patterns when I was 14, i'm a fan of his style. It doesn't get more funky in Metal than with Gene Hoglan.
I watched him play in the rainy season on twitch it was awesome
2 weeks later: I watched him play skeksis live on twitch
Gene the machine!Love his beats, so very inventive and original. Too bad SYL doesn't play anymore, that was one grooving fat badass sounding metal band.
Wish there was more SYL covers! I love how I can hear the guitar tracks too, I found out some new things about this song
Right?!
This is no cover, gene was the drummer for syl. The mothafuckin atomic clock.
Lol cover. Tard
I love how he drops behind the beat about halfway through.
It's crazy just how relaxed he looks when playing, his technique is absolutely superb and so economical. Nothing wasted.
Also I love that he basically has 2 small bass drums as rack toms 😂
The machine-like sounds of the guitar and the perfect representations that the music creates make it an absolutely essential album one can always return to.
I have watched a few of his drumming videos, and only just now came to this realization: Left-handed and left-footed. In the shots in the pedal cam, during triplets his main foot is his left, and he plays the high hat, ride, and the majority of his cymbals with his left hand.
Also he keeps his high hat on the left, so his high hat technique has got to be killer.
Ye he stated he s left hand, however he now is ambidextrous
OH MY FUCKIN GOD! (no pun intended)
What the hell man, more puns? You need to go to DETOX with your puns! ;)
Ramon Cardinali de Fernandes for real guys...chill out before it turns into a SHITSTORM
I know right its like the puns are just RELENTLESS XD
OMFG I had to change AAA batteries to my mouse just to read the comments. (ok, Im not really good at this)
I HOPE there are no more puns... This is getting out of control.
Only a Swiss clock is more precise than him! Respekt to this dude!
Considering the savagely heavy manner in which Gene plays the drum part for this maniacal and raging song, he looks pretty happy.
Gene, you rule! So powerful, intense and emotional drumming. One of the greatest metal drummers ever.
What an amazing player, so fluid...
I see a lot of comments regarding Gene, making it look easy. Well, for him, it is easy; he's been playing for many years. Repetition is key!
The original beast! Love ya Gene!
Gene - if you're reading this, PLEASE do the whole album on camera..(!) Much as I'll always think you're a genius, I miss seeing you challenge yourself like you did here (& with Chuck).
Much of your latter day stuff is...well, we've all got bills to pay, but jeez, seeing you like this reminds me of just how gifted you are...
TheCund The Devy Hoglan dynamic was special. Gene's new material he has worked on has come across as a bit flat in many ways. Tried listening to new Testament and found it to be rather generic.
Don't know if you're a Testament fan. I am, and he brought their sound to a whole new level. His drumming on tracks like Native Blood is sick as fuck.
gringochucha ehh. The last Testament album I really loved in its entirety was The Formation Of Damnation. Didn't think anything after that was bad by any means. Just wasn't super interested in it.
I also love the Legacy to The Ritual era testament to death.
Guess I can only take so much thrash.
gringochucha Also I'll repeal what I said about Gene's drumming. Drumming is fantastic on new the new Testament stuff. It's just the songs as wholes I find myself getting bored with.
Yeah, not all the songs on the last two albums are interesting. But there are a few killer ones.
Such an underrated song, love it!🤘🔥🤘
It looks so cool and relaxed when Gene Hoglan plays his drums that he could almost perform it in his sleep. There's no one better better him.
Possibly Metals greatest drummer ever making this awsome track seem easy!
Just amazing! So much admiration for drummers; the skill involved just blows me away! 😊
Seen him with Dark Angel live wow what a show ..in the 80`s
Absolute epitome of playing relaxed
My new favorite drummer and inspiration to start playing again
He makes it seem so effortless!
Pointless detail : on the wide camera angle, he is playing clear drum head on bass with black hardware on a red rug. But on the footcam he is playing white drum head with chrome hardware on a black rug, so the foot cam has been recorded afterwards
Video Fakery.
Gene monster Metal drumer god bless you..
This looks so effortless to him. STL, TORONTO MISSES U.
There is just nothing else like SYL, the riffs and rhythms on this album in particular are so twisted and literally Alien in their attack. Those starts and stops in the verse just sound so nasty with all of the other effects removed.

Alden Legge it still is
@@tylerdrainville1136 both are fruits, both bands heavy as fuck
@@tylerdrainville1136 How's it apples and oranges. Wouldn't that be more like comparing metal drumming to jazz drumming?
I bet it's harder (Meshuggah), but that "band"/guy has a unique style of creating nearly perfect representations of an idea, or a perfect "form", which even if it's not the most technical stuff ever (partly due to being a very clear form), still stands out for its creativity or the "power" of certain sections (while being close to purely technical stuff).
@@bfkc111 most of Gene's stuff is harder than most of Meshuggah. Look at 1995's Symbolic, Gene's playing blows everything away.
