Can I just say as someone who was attacked by three men at 14, I appreciate how you’re talking about the women’s reaction to him. I think we all think we know what we will do in a situation like that, however our amagdala and body have a whole range of responses.

I was a kid in Philly when Gary Heidnik’s crimes were revealed. This, of course, was when Harrison “Marty” Graham and the Frankford Slasher were also still active. These 3 killers and Budd Dwyer’s suicide on live TV made me into the person I am today.

*i watched a documentary recently about a 5 year old girl named melissa who was kidnapped, raped and murdered. her corpse was never recovered but it was a bit of a trigger for me. it gave me the idea i'm currently struggling with: do i dare reach out to the police FORTY YEARS after i was kidnapped? i've talked about it all my life to countless people but - get this - truly, people don't give a shit. the ordeal was never acknowledged by anyone in an appreciable manner. there's never been a time in my life before now where reaching out to the police was possible. oh, my name is melissa and i was 5 years old when it happened so you see why the documentary was a bit of a catalyst for me, so to speak. obviously i physically survived but in every other way i still struggle with it and suffer it on a daily basis. could you imagine being law enforcement, receiving notification of a crime that happened 40 years ago? i don't dare act on it because i'm not able to hear "sorry, it's too late - we can't do anything about it" or some other major disappointment. it's possible the person who got me into his car and drove away with me isn't even alive anymore but, that's what the police are for. INVESTIGATE. right? right.*
*it's hard, isn't it. when you've got the disillusion of how monstrous and evil life is it's hard to have love, appreciation, respect for this thing called life and for the human species. i'm not trying to speak for you or put words in your mouth. it's how i feel, but you've certainly had massive doses of the ugly, bitter dark.*

I'm enjoying this one also, but I just wanted to point out that the word 'drug' is completely unrelated to 'drag', and is not its past tense form. The past tense of 'drag' is always 'dragged', whilst 'drug' strictly refers to a biologically active substance (noun) or administering it (verb).

The crack epidemic that started in the early to mid 1980's made it much easier for potential serial killers to find their victims because literally tens of thousands of new prostitutes became prostitutes because of their crack cocaine addiction.
It seems that it hit the African American community hardest and worse than other ethnic groups and it is easy to see how many serial killers of the 1980's and 1990's and even the present time preyed upon black females as victims.
Whether he chose African American women because they were more involved in street prostitution or if he had a more sinister reason for targeting African American women is not known to myself but if would be interesting to find out his motivations.

The other women did not "give in" to Heidnick the way you portray them to be weak and the more defiant one as strong. For example, being compliant may just keep you alive as evidenced by the "weak" survivors.
Also, insanity is not determined by IQ. You keep talking about how smart he was and so he was determined not to be insane. Insanity means someone who does not live in reality. For example some schizophrenics who think they are god or Batman or think the TV is beaming messages from aliens into their homes or spying on them, etc. Insanity means not knowing right from wrong. For example, there are plenty of very high IQ schizophrenics who are insane most recently in popular media, John Nash depicted in A Beautiful Mind. Heidnick wasn't determined not to be insane bc he was smart, but bc he tried to cover up his crimes so obviously he knew what he was doing was wrong.
Then, at the end you call him insane at least three times. He was NOT insane!

    • @anhedonianepiphany5588
      @anhedonianepiphany5588 3 роки тому

Although there are _some_ remarkable schizophrenics with exceptional IQs, and the media occasionally seeks to perpetuate the myth, there is a very poor _actual_ positive correlation between this disease and genius. Some relatively antiquated data suggested the opposite. In fact, the only consistent relationship between the two occurs in the _low IQ_ range.

Criminal insanity is a very common defense but is rarely proven. And is a nearly impossible defense especially crimes committed over extended periods. "Did the person know what they were doing was wrong at the time the crime was committed? Did the person attempt to hide or conceal the crime?
The prosecution only has to prove the latter.

You both are easy to listen to and present well. I know this is your first episode but I’m a little disappointed. I’m 34:13 minutes in and you’ve basically gotten most - if not all- of the information from the Wikipedia page.
I hope you eventually use content from various sources, including sources hard to come by that we the listener/viewer would be hard pressed to find ourselves.
That’s a little constructive criticism that I hope you take in the spirit it was given. Good luck ☺️

Hey, thanks for the advice. I can't really remember this episode at all, as we took a break after this. With our newer episodes (except the newest one"Heaven's Gate") we try and do lesser known cases, where Wikipedia isn't even an option. This week we're releasing an episode on The Doodler, and his wiki page is basically useless.
I think it really depends on the case, some bigger cases are easy to start at the source page from Wikipedia and go from there, especially Heaven's Gate. With bigger cases, it's kind of risky to go into detail about things that are "hard to come by" because, it's hard to trust some sources, but that's mostly why we're trying to do lesser known cases lately.
      Thanks for checking us out!

If this is men laughing at horror inflicted upon another human - im out.

Uh, so you wrote this comment _prior_ to watching the content of the video?!?
It may not be particularly "rude", though it _is_ extremely premature and more than a little odd. By the way, I don't want to spoil it for you, but the video doesn't contain the dark behaviour you anticipated, and it's weird that you expected it to.

What? Yeah the intro music sucks but there's no one laughing at anyone in this video. You obviously commented at about minute one. Next time listen to the whole Podcast before chucking your dummy out of your pram.
