The virus doesn't always manifest itself that way. A wild nocturnal mammal that is out during the day & unusually friendly/tame or shows no fear of you is a serious threat of carrying the virus. Those are some of the first signs. Rabies can take a paralytic form where the animal displays disorientation, lethargy, & compromised motor skills that eventually graduate to stupor, paralysis, and ultimately death.
Leon Tarmann I’m sure no one has accused the person who shot this video of having much brains. Contracting rabies is a 90% death sentence, IF you don’t get vaccinated in time. Once symptoms of rabies show in a human or animal, it’s almost ALWAYS game over. To my knowledge, I think there are about 3 or 4 people who have survived rabies. However, those survivors are not the same after full recovery. I watched a couple documentaries on UA-cam about people contracting rabies and surviving. It’s interesting, but eerie.
this skunk definitely has rabies, there are two kinds mammals can contract, Parralysis rabies and aggressive rabies, in Parralysis you get things such as confusion, a drunken looking walk, sometimes they still foam at the mouth sometimes they dont, fever, swatting at things that aren't there, seizures, chewing on their own body and Parralysis and the inability to walk or sometimes even move, in aggressive rabies you have of course very high aggression, often they will try to bite anything moving and this is the type where u would imagine a dog foaming at the mouth chasing you like cujo, In both Parralysis rabies and aggressive rabies the infected animal will refuse water and is often scared of water, this is called hydrophobia and occurs Because the virus spreads to the salivary glands and effects the throat and the ability to swallow, so any water or liquid that is drank will be forced back up, the animal also drools often Because of it's inability to swallow it's saliva which is another reason for the foaming at the mouth Symptom, sometimes depending on what stage it's in, u won't even know an animal has rabies, the only signs could be random Parralysis and odd behavior, so for the people who say this animal doesn't have rabies, that is why there are still about 50,000 rabies deaths in humans every year because people doubt an animal has rabies when they don't know enough about rabies to say so, if you see a rabid animal CALL ANIMAL CONTROL, killing it isn't the best option and u should only do so if u are I'm danger or your pets are in danger, you should not attempt to handle a animal with rabies CALL ANIMAL CONTROL, they will remove the animal and put it down
I was just witness to what I believe was a rabid or severely injured skunk. I watched it from 30 feet, whistled, made noises louder until finally it turned from what it was doing...wrestling with what I thought maybe a toad it had found and began to move back towards the woods, but staggering, falling sideways and not like a typical one that will scurry off with a cute waddle. I grabbed my .22 and dispatched it only 15 more feet away where it had grabbed a piece of corn on the cob my dad puts out for raccoons and wildlife....none of us hunt, so it wasn't a bait pile or anything like that. I shot it first round successfully and followed up with 3 more to make sure. I called 911 to find out if they wanted to put me thru to any agency for testing the animal. They gave me DEC phone number and he told me since no human or animal made contact to just put it in the trash can or bury it about 3 feet deep. I double bagged my hand and grabbed it by it's hair and in another bag it went and then into a cardboard box. I just feel bad though for killing something trying to make it and survive. I also poured some bleach on the blood that was left behind as the DEC officer suggested as the chipmunks and squirrels feed right where this happened. I was glad to read your post where the drunken walking was mentioned....this puts my mind to ease knowing I did the right thing.
Earl Ismyname you did the right/ethical thing. The skunk was sick and suffering. You relieved the skunk from suffering, and you prevented other animals from potentially being infected by coming in contact with the skunk's saliva, blood, and bodily waste. You have nothing to feel bad/worried about.

It was walking in circles, in and out of seizures, in the middle of the street at 11am. Drooling a LOT and sprayed at least 5 times while I was there.
When my now 47 year old son was three he was bitten on both shins by a rabid skunk. A reminder for those who are saying to shoot it: You shouldn't shoot a rabid animal, because: 1. Once the rabies virus reaches the brain, it multiplies rapidly and quickly travels via nerves to other parts of the body. In the late stages of rabies, the body is filled with virus. If the animal's insides go about, a person or animal can be infected just as easily as they can be infected by the saliva, since the other body parts are also infected. 2. If you shoot it in the head, this may make it harder for the animal's brain to be tested for rabies. If you see a rabid or suspected rabid animal, call animal control right away. They will euthanize it.
hllc1 rabid animals usually get shot regardless. the virus is not present in blood. either you call the police and they shoot it or on more rural areas you can call the local hunter and he kills it
Whatever, I always shoot rabid animals if I see them. The body parts will only be spread everywhere if you you use a gun that's way too powerful. A .22 would take care of this skunk quickly without any mess. You don't need the brain to test for rabies, blood or saliva will work too. I saw a rabid fox on my neighbor's property once and shot it, after which they thanked me when I let them know.
The mobile home park where my mom lives in Redlands have skunks that run around at night I used to wear a keychain that would make noise when I would walk outside her mobile home park so that they would hear me in advance and not walk up on them unexpectedly and spray me and I never been sprayed here are some facts that I've learned with my close encounters with them they don't always turn around and spray you they sometimes stand the ground facing you and pump their front paws on the ground and after seeing one skunk pass right through the training fence I wondered how that was possible but after seeing one wet they were like a weasel or a ferret I should say it's just a hair that makes them look like they ain't, and if you ever seen a fox terrier showing it teeth before it bites you, that is with a skunk teeth looks like with a long muzzle as well.
I stepped on a skunk the other night walking out my back door. It ran in my house. Jumped in my bath tub. Took a few shits in the tub then ran back outside. Luckly I didnt get bit.
We had a rabbid skunk in our yard last summer. It would get up, wobble around, come toward you down the driveway, rub it's mouth on the ground and get up, wobble, flop back down, and do that over and over. I was going to shoot it but my 6" barreled .22cal was going to be louder than the 21" .22cal that I've got now. Wasn't sure what the noise would have started. So it got under the back fence and someone in the adjacent cul du sac shot it himself.
Rory Sullivan I was actually just talking to my husband about getting one as a pet. It’s perfectly legal in our state and they make great pets once you find a vet that will remove scent glands.
I assume there was more evidence than was apparent from the video. The symptoms described weren't exceptionally clear. It didn't look as though (s)he was trying to spray. I didn't see the coating on the eyes. I didn't see evidence of paralysis. (S)he was moving the way skunks do. Skunks waddle just as this one does. Nursing mother skunks forage in the day, so that is not a sign of rabies. Skunks are curious and this ones is showing curiosity. The only time it seemed to be prepared to spray was when it raised it's tail when the cameraman was following (as if to chase) when (s)he was walking away. The skunk also doesn't appear unkempt. Fur looks decently groomed. The closeup of the face looks as though this is a juvenile which would explain why they might be out it uncommon hours. I suspect skunk-o-phobia is good for business. I don't buy that this skunk has rabies.
The most skunks we've counted in our backyard in one night is 14 different ones. Only one wild skunk in 100,000 in California has rabies. So they are welcome in our yard. I do observe their behavior closely. Without skunks I wouldn't have a channel. I'm sitting outside right this moment, waiting for them to arrive.
It was in early stages and it looked like it was the (dumb) paralytic type of rabies. Which is different than the (rage) aggressive type of rabies. Either type would eventually progress to the thousand mile stare into the sun. But this animal was caught in early stages and hopefully euthanize before he suffered the late stages.
I had a drunk encounter with a skunk once i was so lit i thought it was a cat i kept calling it til it got closer then my drunk ass realize what it was damn thing chased me home and sprayed the side of the house my mom came downstairs thinking i had just lit a blunt here i am crying cause i thought it got me and my mom is just laughing uncontrollably.. Talk about trust issues🤦
Is this skunk's rabies not in its last stage? Its behavior here seems as much brought about by trying to avoid the man with the camera as anything else..while its not bolting, it is clearly aware of the man's presence and trying to avoid him. It isn't tripping over itself like the foxes and raccoons I've seen, its not foaming at the mouth? I don't doubt the uploader/ i just want to know what I'm looking for.
Well they are usually out this time of day, a skunks do wable. Eyes coating over mean nothing at all. Is it rabies? Well... better safe than sorry. But I don't see drool nor can they eat bc if rabied they can't swallow hence the drool. I'd definitely quarantine it. But I'm not totally convenienced it rabid.
Jim Incredible I’ve studied animals and animal behavior for a very long time. Unless a dog or bear or larger animal disturbed it, a skunk will not come out when the suns out. It also appears to be wobbling and confused like it’s drunk. Another sign of a rabid animal. It isn’t showing any normal behaviors
my sister had to put her dog down because the skunk had rabies it bit the dogs nose. skunks are nocturnal animals if you see certain animals like this in broad daylight there’s something wrong with it report it.
+Edward Brown It's rabid. Healthy skunks do forage in the daytime but they also run away from the six foot tall stink-beasts that walk on two legs. Healthy skunks also aren't ataxic. Rabies is bad shit. The best thing for a rabid animal is a merciful, painless death. Rabies is a horrible way for a beast like that to go. It sucks when it happens to something like a skunk because skunks are usually pretty sweet natured, unless you're the sort of an idiot who likes harassing wild animals. That all being said there's nothing wrong with eating one if you're the sort to trap them for the pelt and skunk-oil.
Never go close to wild animal, especially when you see it disoriented, foaming, its rabies. But i guess curiosity is stronger than alert.

You were about to get the new airborne version of rabies 😂
They are beautiful looking animal
Imagine getting sprayed. Double whammy, rabid and stinky.
those stinkers r so cute darn it.
that skunk ain't rabid its a pet. its not acting strangely at all
Nate Reynolds Are you being sarcastic because I hope you are
Certainly doesn't act rabid to me but it depends on what stage it's in. I'm used to seeing raccoons twitching out and shit.
I agree... The only thing that's odd is him being out in the day other than that he doesn't look sick.
No.. no that skunk is clearly sick. And who would want a skunk for a pet..?
Rory Sullivan I was actually just talking to my husband about getting one as a pet. It’s perfectly legal in our state and they make great pets once you find a vet that will remove scent glands.
Is it rabies or did it get hit by a car ? The head is not turned up and there's no seizure apparent.
He obviously knows what he is doing....
Well too bad, because it did. Doofus.
This guy is a professional!
its sad im watching this to get away from the horrors happening in canada right now
If you think the rabid animals are bad in Newburgh, you should see the people lmao good ol upstate NY
Looool right!!
Awe, looks like it's begging for help. I agree though, that was dangerous to get close to it.
Thank you for sharing the signs of rabies in wildlife isn't taught anymore. You are so brave to get that close to teach others. Thank you.
It's so cute thooo
"Eyes coated over" is usually a sign of Distemper, isn't it?
I bet a first all the teachers thought one of the kids found his parents stash.
Aw, cute skunk
WHY ARE YOU SO DAMN CLOSE???
The most skunks we've counted in our backyard in one night is 14 different ones.
Only one wild skunk in 100,000 in California has rabies. So they are welcome in our yard. I do observe their behavior closely.
Without skunks I wouldn't have a channel. I'm sitting outside right this moment, waiting for them to arrive.
You have actual proof that President Trump is a racist??? Let's hear it...
I'm gonna guess that it is a bad sign when a skunk won't spray you getting near it like that
Cute little guy, amazing coat too. Dude you need to show a bit more caution when approaching an sick animal.
Beautiful skunk poor thing
SKUNK EXE. has stop working
Attaway, Dilbert, get nice and close.
Also distemper acts same but without aggression and foaming its also a issue that animals cant get well from
Can you contract rabies from skunk spray to the eyes.
It’s a baby skunk end of story.
They r so pretty
Poor thing :(
the voice truly surprised me
he doesnt look the way other animals act when they have rabies, they usually stare at the sun or run around in circles
All the people asking why he’s getting close... he’s vaccinated, geniuses
Skunks are very notorious for carrying rabies.
If the skunk is trying to eat he does not have rabies. It's more likely canine distemper.
I don't doubt the uploader/ i just want to know what I'm looking for.
poor lil bugger...
why are you so close dawg. I mean you really asking for it
That looks more like distemper.
Can anyone tell me if rabies can be passed from them 'spraying' the smell to humans pls? Poor lil fella. Its horrible seeing them die that way.
Darwin award to the cammer.
The US still has rabies, plague, leprosy cases on a monthly basis.
Not understandable for this European.
So sad. I've seen a deer with rabies. A terrible disease
It didn't spray him....
Yep! Its rabid!
Looks like all the Other Politicians....
It’s really quite sad
my sister had to put her dog
down because the skunk
had rabies it bit the dogs nose.
skunks are nocturnal
animals if you see certain
animals like this in broad
daylight there’s something
wrong with it report it.
Poor Pepe Le Pew
tf i've read it like rabbit drunk
People do her pets that arecskunks could have been an escaped pet
Poor little guy 💔
Rabies? Or is he just pissed cuz u won’t leave him alone?
It's not rabid. This is normal behavior.
+Edward Brown
It's rabid.
That skunk is stumbling trying to spray, and for a second it looked like its front legs gave out. Paralysis can be a symptom of rabies.
Also it's out during the day, which is also abnormal.
Edward Brown yeah because nocturnal animals out during the day is very normal, you're right man totally 100% correct it's not delirious at all hahaha
Yeah no I'm not doing that without a 12 gauge side by side
