Rabid Raccoon

- We saw a rabbis infected raccoon by our home while outside in the middle of the day. It started walking toward us so we went inside to avoid it attacking us or spreading its disease to us. We called both the police and animal control. Neither of which would help.
We hope this short video can be informative. Never touch an animal that has signs of rabies you can try to call your local authorities but if they aren’t willing to help find someone who can.
Keep in mind when commenting, this video is only a few seconds long. We assumed it was rabies before questioning if it was anything else that may have happened to it. Some would argue that this isn’t rabies but distempers.
Please help me reach 1,000 subscribers. My video has had over 1 Million views and 500,000+ hours of watch time, yet UA-cam won't let me monetize. Thank You. - Домашні улюбленці та дикі тварини
I wonder if there’s a “Where are they now” where the raccoon finally got itself cleaned up and got a job.
He's in Raccoon Heaven.
Yeah animal control and the police never responded both said it wasn’t their job. We ended it calling a friend to come and shoot it. Cleaned up were it died and sprayed the lawn down as well as we could. Later we found another one dead behind our house.
@Gi Gi of course it was rabies?! Foaming from the mouth and clearly neverous symptoms is damaged that raccoon was a gonner, there is no cure

Way too many people in the developing world don't know that.
When I've been to India as part of the U.N. anti-rabies mission, there were multiple instances in which people from rural areas had never heard of the disease, which was awful, as their children had zero chance of survival by the time they arrived at the clinic.
Fortunately we had access to a hefty supply of fentanyl, so we could ease virtually all of the pain.
I would never administer fentanyl to a child, but in Taiwan and the U.S. pediatricians have access to less intense drugs.
In India we had to use what we could, and tying patients to their beds. Truly awful.
The Geekazoid look at that little crazy fkr.
Rabies is the closest thing that comes to a zombie virus for mammals.
For Eutherians. Opossums, platypuses, and echidnas don’t get it since their blood is so cold.
Should be worried about what the deer have...you want zombie virus look up cronic wasting disease
Yeah only difference it's not as contagious
Realistically in a zombie apocalypse the first very huge wave of zombies would die out by the first month. Because believe it or not zombies would decay pretty quickly. Some slower than others
But people would be turning every day so things wouldn’t get back to normal for years. Not to mention the factions and groups that’ll show up
Rabies is one of the scariest things in this twisted world. We need to talk more about this disease, especially in schools. I'm 25 and I've only recently (a few years back) read about it on the internet and found out what kind of a hell rabies is. I mean, it was mentioned to us in primary school, but it wasn't given NOWHERE as much attention as it should have been. 99% mortality rate is a pretty big freaking deal.
Yeah, I was aware of rabies and saw Old Yeller, but I didn’t know the scope of the virus until recently. It’s terrifying.
Hijacks the central nervous system. Anyone or anything with one of those is susceptible. I recently read that the genera is known as “lyssa”. Scary to see.
For sure here in Amazonia, Brazil is relatively common indigenous people die by rabies because of hematophagous bats it's a slow and suffering death.
Yeah our school talked about this, they showed a video of rabies patients and it's pretty traumatising I must say.
@@CalisthenX Honestly, that's a pretty smart way to go about it, the more shocking the better. Because that way it'll cut into your memory and will always know it's a real threat. If it only gets mentioned, mere words won't do it justice and chances are you'll forget about it down the line.

Except manatees. But theyre too chill for their own good

Some animals that have rabies, can act timid and tame, so if you come across a usually wild animal, that acts really tame and unusually off, they can have rabies, so steer clear. You can tell from its weird lack of salivation control that it's obviously lost some of its bodily controls.
The best advice, stay away from most wild animals, they can have rabies or other potentially nasty things in their bite, or even in their fur.
Blind Kumiho I wonder if that’s what I experienced tonight. Was sitting outside with my cat when a large, well-fed raccoon snuck up under my chair, by my right leg, looking intently at my cat. Not sure if that’s early stages with no outward signs, that I was no threat in him hunting my cat, which was about 4 feet away, or that it had some crazy comfort level with humans. It did take off when I jumped up though. But, I won’t be out there that late ever again.
Yes.
Yes I know this all to well I get mite bites daily an around my house I have a squirrel problem 😑 I'm boutta start shooting them it's getting a bit Insane (I live on a farm area so if they get ticks or anything it won't end great for my chickens-)
They can't swallow. The saliva just keeps building up in their mouths; frothing and spilling out. I HATE RABIES!
If an animal isn’t running away from you, you should be the one running that’s what I’ve learned
Rabies went through our area really bad a few decades ago . There was dead raccoons and fox everywhere . During the outbreak , I walked into the backyard and a raccoon came running at me full speed and repeatedly attempted attacking me . I was able to get away but very thankful it happened in the daytime and not after dark .
That'd be a scary situation to be in. Luckily this guy was moving super slow, it almost felt like he was asking for help.
That's why I always carry a baton stick with me when I'm in my yard at night. You never know
Rabies is basically the closest thing to an actual zombie virus.

Good. The death from rabies is said to be among the worst ways to go out of all things. For humans and for animals. There is no cure, and you can just watch yourself slip into insanity, losing control bit by bit. Knowing, what is about to happen. People get fixated in hospitals, so they do not bite chunks out of themselves, poke their eyes out, attack anything and everything and spasm out completely as the virus enters your brain. Rabies = Terrible virus.
The slow twitching turn of the head at the beginning though. I swear if it had locked eyes with you/the camera that would have been some horror movie shit.
Thank you for posting this. As hard as this is to watch, it is very important as our suburbs push further into wild areas. Rabies isn't as common as it once was, but it's every bit as dangerous. If you see any animal, wild or domesticated, acting this way STAY AWAY! Call local authorities, but be prepared to have to deal with it yourself as very few city governments want to deal with it. As to how, I will leave that to your imagination, but sometimes death is a mercy.
We were really surprised that local authorities wouldn't help us and were not prepared to deal with the situation ourselves. Luckily we knew of some people that could help with the situation.
Some of the symptoms include:
drooling, seizures, tender paw pads (that often become pale), eyes will sometimes reflect green in daylight, unusual friendliness or over aggression towards natural predators, walking aimlessly around during the day or night, a blank unseeing stare, hair loss, leaky or crusted eyes/nose, skin lesions, and breathing problems.
This is the classic case everyone imagines when they hear the word, "rabies." Couldn't help but imagine how beautiful it was before the disease. Glad your dogs (and yourselves!) are safe.
Sorry but the quick change of tone from the sympathetic "Oh poor baby" to the inconvenienced "Wait, is he gonna die right here?" is just too funny.
Understandable.
finally a video where i can see what a rabid raccoon would look like. I work as a security guard at my job (usually night times) & there’s a lot of raccoons when i patrol the area. i got chased by one & i had to educate myself on how it looks like & what to do
thank you for the video even tho it’s so sad :(
I'm glad this video could serve some educational purposes to others out there.
To those commenting about filming instead of ending the raccoon... This was very educational to those who have never seen rabies! And I don't know what action was taken before or after video-they could have already called animal control or may handle it after fully realizing the situation. And not everyone would be capable or equipped to dispatch it, let alone the element of danger involved. I've had to do it, but there could have been repercussions regarding discharging a weapon inside city limits. I just couldn't take the chance of the raccoon hiding out then later biting a child, or neighborhood dog or even the rest of the large raccoon family by my house.
And incidentally, rabid animals can be quite difficult to put down. Being dehydrated, they may not bleed out as readily. Zombie like, they can linger on after all but a head or heart shot.
+shot forshot thank you for not being oblivious to the situation like most people who comment. We did call animal control and the police, neither of which would deal with the situation, both advised us to call the other. And we do live in an area we're discharged a weapon could cause danger to child and nearby homes if the bullet bounced off something. We keep an eye on the animal to make sure it wouldn't travel into others yards and bite their animals or child, and were able to do that by getting the animal to watch us in our window. So what better thing to do while waiting for a good solution or some help to drive out then to film the thing.
Well thank you. I am upset that animal control or police wouldn't handle the situation.. It's the real world, but that can be a serious public health issue!
@@DaleNolanJr Why the hell would animal control not deal with this? That is literally their whole job
@@shotforshot5983 It is inhumane as hell and generally inexcusable to be shooting an animal outside of the vitals. It is hard to imagine a situation with a rabid animal with limited mobility where you can't hit the vitals. That said, it is generally a bad idea to be shooting in town. I wouldn't.
the drooling part proves it has rabies......
No, just because an animal is drooling doesn't mean it 100% has rabies.
also if it acts delusional or sickly and is getting near humans
pie lord Racoons are nocturnal. The mere fact it was out in daylight indicates severe confusion. Loss of muscle control, muscle spasms, shakes, in addition to drooling makes it appear a clear-cut case of rabies.
Jangle2007 Daylight is a myth - we see perfectly healthy raccoon here all the time during the night and occasional during the day (just not as much) . Rabid raccoon's have physical symptoms to look for such as in this video.
TubeHDR - A racoons preferred environment is in the dark. If you're seeing them in daylight, there must be some other, perhaps unnatural factor at work, such as easy access to human food supply or other human habituation.
Bless his heart I’m sure that he could feel the pain

That is so sad, poor little guy.
He certainly not shot, psychotic or drunk. Based on the constant ejection of saliva out of it's mouth and visible seizures and violent nature, it is safe to say it was infected with rabies.
I don’t know, dude. I’ve been in plenty of bars. I’ve seen several raccoons drink too much and fall off the bar stools, just like this.
As sad as these videos are to watch they are useful to help people recognize the symptoms of the disease.
for those who are not in the subject. rabies in saliva. You don't have to be bitten to get infected, just mucosal contact is enough. unfortunately it is impossible to save an animal or a person infected with rabies, they will face a painful death
One rule you need to know
IF NOCTURNAL ANIMALS COME OUT DURING THE DAY, THEY ARE NOT OK
False. Many animals we think of as nocturnal are not actually. They've adapted around human behavior, but may be out during the day seeking food for themselves or their young. Many reasons. Observe from a safe distance. If they're displaying signs of illness or injury, contact a licensed rehabber for advice! Sometimes the only help we can offer is a peaceful release from suffering, but other times even they can be saved.
Possums will come out during midday sometimes but I think they are more evening/morning owls than nocturnal. Not actually sure I've seen em at midnight I've seen em at evening and I've seen em at noon.
@@MsTlc333 “if nocturnal animals-“
“False, animals that aren’t nocturnal come out in the day”
@@CC-ok2kt Obviously, you didn't read my reply. These are NOT nocturnal animals! Neither are skunks, coyotes, foxes, bears, bobcats, etc. People keep spreading that "out during the day means they're sick" misinformation and it's getting healthy animals killed! Even with bats, one of the few rabies vectors who are actually nocturnal, there are many other reasons they may be found out in daylight. Poisoning, fungal infections, animal attacks, collision injuries, exclusion from roost, inability to take off from the ground. Bats need to drop several feet to fly. Often, if handled with proper protective gloves, a grounded bat can be placed up on a tree or structure and they will fly away at dusk. Generally, only 1% of bats are infected by rabies. So, even animals that are actually nocturnal can be out in daylight and healthy.
Many Opossum & Raccoons mothers come out in the day to eat alone & recover after giving birth & to feed their babies… you are wrong.

It's a sad situation. I had a little raccoon family living on my property and one of them contracted rabies, probably from the bats we have around here and I had to end up shooting it. I fed that raccoon for 5 years, watched it have babies and bring them to the porch to eat cat food I put out for them. Had to call animal control so they could perform a necropsy.
Your description made me sad more than this raccoon!
Poor little buddy 😢
Yeah, he's rabid, poor little guy - I have a real soft spot for raccoons, they're pretty cool little animals, but they can carry a lot of disease, rabies just being one of them. I'm a city kid, from Queens, NY, but spent a few years in a very rural area. One day, a raccoon came onto our property, just like this one - omg, when the grownups saw how close we were to that rabid raccoon, oh man, talk about "if pigs could fly", I mean they just came unglued. Fortunately, my friend's dad was a hunter - hell, everybody up there was - but I saw him put 6 shots in that things head from point blank range before it finally fell over and stayed there. They guy who shot it was named Curly Ives - I never looked at Curly in quite the same way after that...also lost my interest in going "coon hunting" with him again, lol.
Never shoot a rabid animal in the head, its brain also contains the virus and if you shoot it the virus will become airborne and you may breath it in. Just shoot its body until it falls down, it'll be grateful for your mercy anyway and you'll have less risk of catching it yourself. The virus is in the drool of the animal and the brain, death is mercy for those with rabies.

L5940 wrote a damn autobiography
That's not all that unusual assuming he was using something like .22. And point blank range can limit the energy transfer into the brain because a lot of energy goes out the back of his skull. I once shot a treed raccoon trying to kill my chickens with a .22 right above his left eye, big ole exit wound in the back of his head so ik it went right through the left hemisphere of his brain, It was dark and he fell into a bush but I heard him seizing for ~30 seconds. Brains are resilient and while consciousness is a fragile phenomenon, mobility/spasm-y body movement is a lot hardier. He probably wasn't feeling a thing after the first or 2nd shot and even if you gutshot him and left him for a few hours it would still be more humane than rabies.
When they have rabies the go through fits of pain & moments of clarity kinda. It will roll around and twitch in pain for a few minutes then get up like nothing happened and be aggressive to anything near it. Raccoons are nocturnal and live in groups, if you see one alone in day light chances are its rabid, especially if it's acting like this.
It could also be Distemper. Alot of animals in Connecticut that were thought to have rabies actually had Distemper.
That is very possible but neither has a cure once the infection is that far gone, its drooling and showing signs of neurological failure with the falling down and twitching, i hope this animal was put down fast and peacefully because i would not wish that kind of death on any animal. We saw a fox sitting about a hundred yards away just staring at the house. It left and then appeared again. There were always the odd fox around so we never thought too much about it at the time. But later in the afternoon, my sister was near our barn, when the fox came around our little chicken coop real close and stood looking at her. She yelled to me and I ran and told my father. By the time he got out there with his .22 the fox was in our outdoor pig corral, chasing our big sow around in circles. It bit the pig behind the ear, and my dad shot the fox, and then he killed the pig as well. He sent the head of the fox to be tested, and it was positive for rabies. My sister was very lucky that day! Another time we also had a dog that had pups, and was showing signs of rabies as well. We had to put them all down.
Sorry to hear about that experience but I'm glad your family was never harmed.
@@DaleNolanJr Yes! We were lucky! Thanks for the reply! Stay Healthy! 😊👍
I grew up in NY near the border. In the 60s I remember hearing that rabies cases were epidemic in Quebec and the animals were carrying the disease across the border. Not placing blame here, it's only what I remember the adults talking about. We kids were really informed and warned about rabid animals. There were cases of rabid dairy cows too, and farmers that had to be vaccinated.
@@captaintrips2980 Interesting, pretty nasty little bug it is for sure, especially around milking cows! Thanks for the insight.
Terrible death. It makes you wonder sometimes why on earth diseases like this were created, and how they were created. I mean what purpose do they serve other then death.
metalmaniac345 Well its interesting you use the word created, because in the Bible it talks about how sin brought death and disease into the world.
***** I'm not overly religious, but science can only prove so much. Maybe one day we will know it all.
Chris Nelvin so wonderfully put :)
metalmaniac345 Sadly, there's no purpose to it. The rabies virus survives because it causes its hosts (victims) to transmit it, mostly through bites. It evolved to be this way because this turned out to be an effective survival strategy. Nature is an ugly and frightening thing.
***** you looney doctrinated christian, you make me sick
My 3 month old husky pup was bitten by a rabid raccoon and died in my arms before it had the chance to turn her aggressive. I was 12 years old. My mom told me to stay away from her but i did not listen i could not let her die alone. We had no way to put her out of her misery and it broke my ❤ ill never forget her eyes as she looked up at me as if to say please help me. Rabies is evil and how i know it was rabies she had a bite on her side that was bleeding her mouth was foaming like she ate soap she could not stand up she kept falling and the coon was in a tree near by slobbering bearing its teeth. She was too young i was told to have rabies shots.
That's actually a little sick there is always an option to put a suffering animal down. Your family could have easily brought her to be put down at a vet.
Sad thing to see.
A racoon started hanging out in one of my trees in the daytime a few months ago and I feared the worst: rabies. They're nocturnal so I assumed it was sick. Saw it through my cameras and couldn't help but feel sorry for it even if it wasn't showing as rabid but my gut told me "this ain't right".
The raccoon’s sitting position at the start made me think he was about to start monologuing.
Wow...incredible footage! He was foaming at the mouth..definitely rabid. Very sad☹️
Thank you, it was very sad indeed. I wish we could have helped it rather then eliminate it.
Poor baby definitely has rabies. Drooling and foaming at the mouth. One of the major symptoms. Plus seizures.
It's so heartbreaking to see such poor animals suffer and couldn't be able to help 😿😿
Saw a vid of a person who had rabies, that disease is hardcore. As far as I could find only two people in recorded medical history have survived after infection without immediate vacination.
There have been several over the world, seems like different strains of the virus different treatments and different bodies can give a tiny number of people a lucky bounce. Still very sick and very long recoveries though due to brain damage.
For your safety DO NOT APPROACH RABID ANIMALS. You do not want to end up like my friend.
what happened to your friend
Ur friend got rabies or something?
Classic text book symptoms of rabies!
You can always tell when the head goes back especially/mouth foams
I wondered what a rabid animal looks like and now I keep getting rabid animal videos in my recommend list!
You're welcome?
"Oh...is he going to die right here?". That turnaround did not take long...
That slow peer to the camera... "I'm sink teef into youuuuuuuu *falls over*"
More like, "I'm in agony. Please help me and put me out of my misery."
Yea having rabies is not something to joke about, death is mercy for that raccoon since its brain is being devoured by the virus.
I honestly believe that animals was crying for help. I'm not big into raccoons, having chickens and all, but i wouldn't wish that fate onto even my worst of enemies. That poor thing suffered horribly. I hope its death wasn't too painful. Then again, i'd assume it couldn't be worse than the death it was already receiving.
I'm happy that my parents taught me to automatically consider all even slightly odd animal behavior as rabies.
dramatically turns head slowly, mouth is foaming, not in control, looking like a zombie is a painful and scary way to go
