  • A whole bunch of street racing from smack dab in the middle of the midwest. Z06, Camaro's, a crazy turbo Cavalier, an Evo & STi, and 700hp S2000 battle it out on he streets.

    Had a '90 Z24 that I loved. Served me for 6 years and 102K after replacing a clutch, alternator, catalytic converter and wiper motor (thinking I'm glad I had manual windows or would have replaced those as well). The 3.1L V6 was a solid engine, wished it had disc brakes all around, but for $12K in 1990, great value for the money.

    I think it's stupid to bad mouth a cavalier or any car that has been modified just because you don't like it! Like people who love ferrari and Lamborghini, and think ALL AMERICAN CARS are junk! Should we take their advice as well! Drive what you love and modify what you want and stop hating! After all.....someone may think your ride is JUNK!!! Who would be more right?!

I always loved the Berretas I think they were Z24 or something along those lines and they were quick! The probe gt, Celtics gts. Loved all those cars from my childhood. Cool to see such a common daily built to tear apart other beast cars

      +Black Majik ten grand is way off. That motor is a 3.5 liter from any GM car from 2005 and up. Any 60 degree V6 has the same bolt pattern, and hooks up to the same transmission at 1985-1994 V6 cavaliers, you'll have to modify motor mounts (machine shops will do it for 180). The headers, bigger fuel injectors, turbocharged, and what ever you choose. A 3.5 has 200 + hp stock. When modified I've seen them push close to 400. Now in a cavalier that weighs 2400 lbs...oh boy! The stock ones were pretty quick, and a 3.5 from a scrap yard will run 500-1k is a steal. But ten grand nope. Check out V6Z24.com

      @@Flora-L1 get a 3100 out of like a 2003 Buick century or something. Go to summit racing and buy a cam kit. I almost bought a cavalier..if I had the money..that already had that done to it. It was a 5 speed that would pull HARD in every gear. The tires would spin too.

      The Z24 with 2.8 (later 3.1) of that time had a nice torque curve and the car was quite light. Chevrolet did things like a fiberglass hood on that car to lighten it up. The stock exhaust even had a nice note. The Z24 of that time period seemed better built, roomier, and more comfortable than those of the last generation before the Cobalt replaced it.

      Grant MacPhee I have to ask, why an LX9? They're not that powerful stock. If I had to choose between say, a stock LX9 vs a stock L67, I'm taking the L67. More aftermarket, more power, more reliable, no?

    • @pauljs75
      @pauljs75 7 років тому +1

      Obviously some people would argue otherwise, but they don't consider what other companies were doing factory stock in the same model year at that price bracket. Sure it might not hold up to a direct-injected naturally aspirated 2013 V6 Accord or Camry (making something like an amaze-balls 23 short of 300 stock), but compared to a Honda or Toyota of the early 1990's it honestly didn't suck at all in terms of performance. There was the 3.1L V6 and the other option was the HO Quad-4 that was on par with early VTEC performance. (But with the trade-off of a lopey idle vs. the regular variant because no variable cam thing going on.) And either of those GM engines had 180HP from the factory and a mild NA tune could put them in low 200s.
      The only thing that sucked with GM cars from back then is that if it wasn't a V8 you only had one or two aftermarket companies to find any bolt-on mods from. Thus almost everything had to be custom fabricated and tuned, so it's like challenge mode vs. a Honda where you had a dozen companies to buy tuner kit parts that go right on out of a box with instructions. It takes more of a die-hard approach and learning stuff like welding and figuring out your own fuel and timing tables from scratch if you were willing to start throwing money at it.

    • @theroyalcrownedtiger2946
      @theroyalcrownedtiger2946 4 роки тому

      For those of you who says my honda can outrun the chevy, you need to keep in mind your cars are probably newer, and newer has more power than the older cars do, so it's not going to take a genius to figure out that a car with more power and torque will outrun a car with less power and torque.
      Now to put things on a much more similar scale, if you take a stock 1990 Cavalier Z24 with automatic transmission vs stock 1990 accord with automatic transmission, the outcome would be either one of these : The Chevy pulls ahead of the accord, or they both are at neck to neck or nose to nose.

      The 3400 Swap was a common, back in the old days.
      I have seen some did the 3.5L swaps into the Cavalier.
      I have seen the naturally aspirated 3800 and the 3800 supercharged and the custom turbo 3800 set ups as well. ( I have not seen the Grand National motor setup, which is the stocl 3.8L Turbo setup )
      The 3800 swap is not easy, needs to modify body parts under the hood bay area.
      The 3400 and the 3500 is easier to do, with the Cavalier.

      darkblaze176 Not a 3800, they look and are completely different.
      The engine in the Cavalier is either a 3500, or a 3400 with a 3500 (gen 3 60 degree V6s) upper intake. There's an extremely remote possibility that it's a 3.1 (gen 2) bottom end with a 3400 top end and 3500 upper intake manifold. With the ease of swapping in the gen 3, the last option is unlikely.

    I had a 89 z24, loved the car but it ended up wrecked under my buddies pickup. Still sitting in my yard waiting to be fixed lol

    Is that a quad four in the cavalier?

    People love to talk shit on Cavalier's including myself. But years ago I had one with a 3800 SC from a Bonneville SSEI we swapped in and before we even modded it I ran 12.94 @112 mph. It was a junkyard special from my uncles yard. But the Cav was too clean to scrap and when done it hurt a LOT of feelings. We did a pulley for more boost, ZZP headers, tune and some other bolt on's like intake spacers and injectors etc. We spent just under a grand on parts and while it doesn't sound like much it did 334 whp on pump and 349 with meth and ran a best of 11.27 @ 124 mph before we sold it. The kid we sold it to put nitrous on it and got into the 10's before the trans let go and in the early 2k's that was moving. But they are light cars so it doesn't take much to wake them up.
