TRAVELING EXHIBIT ASSIGNMENT
The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. Its mission is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights.
UNESCO Slavery Routes and Routes project has commissioned your team to develop a traveling time capsule exhibit that commemorates Nat Turner.
The Presentation
• You must make a presentation to your peers about the key artifacts your team deems significant for inclusion. Artifacts include any primary source from the period: material object, photos, literature, quotes, music, etc. Your team will need to identify the artifact, summarize its significance to the theme at hand. Consider also how the artifact will provide future generations with a greater understanding of enslavement and rebellion.
• Please provide 5 sources for further reading so that UNESCO leadership may read further on this topic. You may list sources found on the syllabus or the Comparative Slave Rebellions blog. Please be mindful that you may be asked about these sources so do not just list them-read them.
• Include a brief biography highlighting the expertise of your group members. Such as, "John Doe has taken several classes on slavery. His research expertise centers on the relationship between day-to-day resistance and armed rebellion among the enslaved. " Or, for example, "Jane Doe is an expert at group organization. She brings to this project a life long commitment to public service and political activism."
• Your presentation can be in any form: UA-cam, formal oral presentation, powerpoint, etc.
• Your presentation may not exceed 20 minutes in length.
• If using multimedia, please email yourself a copy and bring it to class on a jump drive.
As so called black people here in America we must learn to love and respect one another....love our black race ..and ours only !!!..that we are special ...we are different...treat our black women like royalty and black women treat ur black men like he is your precious jewelry empower each other and your kids and we we will grow strong as a nation...regain what what taken away from us....EVERYTHING!
In my eyes, the greatest 'civil rights' leader ever. Nat was a successful businessman (ran a profitable tannery), a prominent deacon in church, a man of great self determination (taught himself to read/write). AND he was obviously pro-2nd amendment. Obviously, I try and use all this as inspiration to explain my own conservative, Libertarian views to the skeptical who wonder aloud how I can possibly think this way. The ultimate message comes through clearly in his words/actions; Don't play the victim....Roll up your sleeves, take of business yourself and become the victor!! He accelerated freedom for the slaves by at least 100 years. Very important person and story. They have tried to squash this story for 100's of years. What an evil group of people to killl so many Indians and enslave other. I can't understand how a group of people collectevily could of been so evil. Mona Ellis: Another crazy one is, they made sure the black family was uneducated, broken up & separated for years. Then they free the blacks, slowly provide tools to get on track & expect the damage done to be turned around quickly. It's going to take @ the very least, 1 or 2 generations from Jim Crow before real progress is going to be seen. Any real progress made after slavery was set back by Jim Crow. Gerry Thiboudeaux he did murder children. He's not a saint. He did commit sins by murdering people. But I also agree with his plight to fight against oppressive slave owners. There is no reasonable, educated, and spiritual person who studies history who can say that Nat Turner was a hero. His struggle had nothing to do with slavery, injustice, or even race. It was a massacre carried out by an 18th Century Charles Manson. Slavery and racism are evil, this had nothing to do with either. For those who want to justify the cowardly slaughter of children by wrapping it in some illusion of "social justice" I pray that you will open your eyes. His butchery of an 11 year old girl while she begged for mercy was more like a pogram against the innocent. If Turner had killed ANYONE who could have thought back it might have been arguable that it was a rebellion. He ONLY struck at women, children, and old people. His soul is damned for eternity unless he confessed and repented. PLEASE research before you post a reply to this that tries to bring up a false equivalency involving what he may or may not have witnessed as a slave.

How did he "ONLY strike at women, children and old men"? Now that is a lie. The first to be killed was his slave master, they were about the same age. They killed any white person in their path. And how can he even get to women and children without killing the fathers and husbands? Nat Turner is a hero. It took guts and courage to revolt against slavery. They knew some or all of them would die, but they sacraficed their lives. To hell with all of those white people...it was a crime against humanity what they did everday to old men, women and children. Raped their wives and daughters, mutilated them. So white life has more value than a black slaves'? If Nat Turner is in Hell as you say...then hundreds of thousands of white slave owners, rapists and murderers are there as well. At least he did it in the name of FREEDOM not for greed, laziness and demonic influence.
Sorry, but you are incorrect. He did not kill his Master, didn't have the guts, he sent his followers in to do the job. Also, also sent them back in to finish off the infant. NO ONE is justifying the evils of slavers, a slavery that his descendants were also in in Africa, however, butchering INNOCENT women and children is wrong on EVERY count. This movie is the most erroneous depiction of a mass murder I have seen since "Birth of a Nation".
You watch too many movies glorifying Turner. He ordered his Master and Master's family killed. He didn't have the courage to carry it out. He actually had them stab a 6 month old baby. Anyone who thinks what he done was righteous is more racist and evil than the slave masters.
