  • DIY String Ornaments {balls and trees}
    Today I will show you how to make lacy hollow cone and balls to me used as Christmas decorations. You will need white glue, water and cotton string.
    Water balloons are used as the form for the balls. A homemade cardboard cone laminated with packing tape is used for the Christmas Tree base.
    You will need some small cups (like applesauce cups of butter tubs) for drying the balloons. You will need a sponge brush for applying the glue water (half and half mix) to the string.
    Directions:
    1. Wrap string around the desired form until all of the string is criss-crossed and covered the form well.
    2. Dab the glue water over all the string making sure it is saturated.
    3. Let dry completely (1-2 days)
    4. Remove the form by popping the balloon OR by squeezing the cone so the string pulls away from it.
    I hope you enjoyed DIY String Ornaments {balls and trees}

    What goes around, comes around, many years later. . . we made these in 1957, using larger balloons and starch. When dry, we sprayed them white and finished with a spritz of spray snow and a pinch of glitter. We cut the tops open so we could include a sprig of mistletoe and hung them in doorways. A lot of memories . . .

    Loved the sponge technique on the ballons; much easier and less messy than when soaking the thread in the glue. Thanks!

    I do enjoy playing with string and glue. I remember making these balls when my kids were young.

    I love string ornaments and have made many over the years. No pictures of any of them however.....grrrr!! When I used the small balloons, I left the tied end out and hung them on a line to dry by those. I spray painted many also and then decorated with greenery, flowers, bows, etc., used ribbon to hang them. They were very pretty and got lots of comments. They were on a large Christmas tree in the front room of a nursing home for quite a few Christmas seasons. I also used larger balloons and made pumpkins at Halloween time and cut out black felt eyes, nose, mouth.

      I've sprinkled iridescent glitter on mine while they were wet still also and used thin twine from the dollar tree to make them more rustic

    Brought back long ago memories of 4th grade we made them for our class Christmas tree, we used yarn and liquid starch. I think I will have to make a few trees. Thanks for the memory jog. TFS

    I am thinking of turning the cones over to hang dried flowers from my garden and making the balls for my string lights for my gazebo. Love the versatility from season to season.

    I made these last night. some with a lot of string and some very, very minimal string. Both string amounts hold up beautifully after popping balloon. However, I found it easier to just roll them in the glue mixture, actually was less messy.
    I ran out of string before starting cones, so be prepared with a few hundred yards of string. I had 200 yards and made 18 3 inch balls.
    So easy!

    I bought punch ball balloons and made large ones for my sons wedding. After having a few disappointingly collapse, after they were pretty much dry, I learned that I could get another balloon inside and inflate it to expand the crumpled string into shape again. I spritzed it with water just to dampen the string and let it dry again.

    Great idea, going to go a few steps further with it and add glitter after the glue to the trees so they are all full of sparkle and use as part of the table decorations for my Son and Daughter in law to be wedding in December! Thank you so much for sharing and inspiring me with more last minute ideas! Love them! You are wonderful!

    I love these I make them very often. Before closing the balloon shut, you can slide in some candies or treats or any kind of thing you want to show through. And eventually make a little opening after to take them out.

    These are fun! I haven't seen string ornaments in a long time! I remember a friend as a kid made a string lamp shade for her room! You can make cheese cloth balls for the tree, or ghosts for Halloween too! I love this time of year!!! Really fun yo do with kids too! Thicker, more absorbent string takes a bit longer to dry, but they are fun!!!
    Thanks for sharing these, Lindsay! These can keep the little ones busy for a while too! (I'd let them dry at least over night at least, heavy, big ones can take a couple of days to dry all the way, then you can use acrylic paint with a brush OR if absolutely totally dry, you can spray paint them too!
    These look great in silver or gold!
    You can make candle holders too!
    These are fun!!! You can make enough balls for an entire tree! ;)

    This is such a fun craft .
    you can also make the balloons in three sizes ( big , bigger , and biggest ) and make a snow man out of them . They turn out really cute , and you just fasten something flat to the bottom one , to make it stand up .

    I tried this idea, myself, using a foam tree shape. I used crochet thread. But the only thing, I was unable to remove the foam, so it became a part of it. I think I will try your idea. I also, used glitter, and powdered snow, to enhance it. Thanks for your suggestions.

    Thank YOU so very much for this video. I've been wanting to make both the balls and tree, but my daughter made the trees and a couple fell to the side, so I've been hesitant to make them. Now that you showed us how to do it, I feel more confident to try. I also appreciate you showing how to make the tree using the cereal box. The cost of those cones are crazy (8.00 or more) and another reason why I haven't made them yet. I almost forgot about the glue. My daughter bought some expensive stuff to make them, but you used regular white glue, which I have lots of. Again, Thank YOU!!! I am so excited to do this now!

    How cool, Lindsay. I was going to ask about mixing glitter with the glue, I see Amanda asked about dunking them in glitter after. I was wondering if mixing the glitter with the glue would waste too much. Also, could watercolour paint from a tube be mixed in the glue to colour the orb, or would it be better to paint them after they are dry? I'm thinking my sis is going to get a few for Christmas...I'm off on a hunt for balloons tomorrow lol. x

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  9 років тому +1

      Bejay Roles yes to all, I think I would wait til the ball was dry and balloon removed and I would brush on more glue and shake on glitter. You could also spray paint it. You could add watercolor in the glue, it would make it easy to see where you have applied it too!

      it needs to be a natural fiber so it will soak up the glue, you need to saturate it and let it dry completely for it to work. I have used worsted weight yearn and it worked.
