Choosing a pattern to highlight your fabric. You'll want to see how Bobby's quilt turned out!

  • Back in February, I sat down with Bobby Metcalf, the newest member of our team, to talk about pulling fabric to match a pattern, and it received a lot of positive responses.
At the same time, we also discussed how to pick a pattern to match a fabric bundle, but didn't release the video at the time to give Bobby a chance to make the quilt and show you all how it turned out.
Well, after several months, Bobby finally finished his first ever quilt top, using the first fabric bundle he ever purchased, The Fae from Rae Ritchie by Dear Stella Fabric. With a mixture of dark and light prints, we decided a perfect pattern for the collection was Vintage Revisited, a pattern I designed in June of 2022.
I have to say, I'm thrilled at how the quilt turned out, and it was so much fun watching Bobby go through the process of piecing his first ever quilt top, from asking me constant questions at the beginning of the project, to having the confidence to take a sewing machine home one weekend to finish the top on his own.
Though the quilt still isn't quilted or bound, I wanted to bring Bobby on to talk about the process, and for him to share his experience with all of you. He'll admit he had his frustrations at times - and that he became very well acquainted with his seam ripper - but he's a great example of how quilting is accessible to anyone!

Bobby’s quilt turned out beautifully! However, I do identify with him on the massacred foxes💕🧵

With every quilt I make, I am confident in my choices at the beginning. I always get apprehensive once the top is done. But once I quilt and bind it, it is exactly as I envisioned. It all comes together in the end.

Bobby, you can do half square triangles. If I can anyone can.

Fascinating! This was the second video I watched this evening on figuring out colors and a pattern going together. The Opinionated Quilter also did one on color matching.

What a fascinating show . It may have been aimed at Booby a new quilter but I learnt a lot about choosing fabric for patterns too.

I really like your discussion on choosing a simpler pattern with out triangles, to making sure the lighter fabric was surrounded in order that a lighter sashing can be used. I learned something new on making my choices.

I really like this video. I did not have that kind of help at the beginning of my quilting journey. As I progressed I went by feel of what I liked and how I felt like it fit. I am looking forward to more videos like this with him. I have been quilting 7+ years. My grandmother quilted but her quilts were scrappy patches. She was born just after the civil war and moved when she was about 8 in a covered wagon from KY to IN.

We all have our own journey, for sure! When Stephanie first learned she didn't have someone to go through every step with either. That's really cool about your grandmother, though!

I truly appreciate this video. Sometimes I sit down to start my project and I am slow to start because I don’t know which fabric to go where, even though I know I need a light and a medium value - but which exact fabric to use. Thank you for really going through your process with us. Wonderful teacher!

Love the discussion , nice work on the finished quilt, although, I was Really hoping to see a different color background, especially after the talk about safe choices and making it personal. Maybe his next one 😉

I'm totally "no rules".. it avoids quilts looking like everyone else's, in my opinion, and makes them more interesting.

I really enjoyed the discussion between the two of you. Bobby, your quilt top turned out beautiful! BTW, I too get tired of doing the same thing over and over, and when I'm just about to throw in the towel then I'm done and ready for the next step. Hang in there. Stephanie, great suggestions as always. I hope you two make more progress videos together.
