Here we go! Here starts the Beginner Quilting class, and you can't quilt without quilting supplies. If you are brand new to quilting, we call these supplies notions, and they are the threads, needles, rulers and gadgets that make quilting a whole lot easier.
There are literally thousands of quilting notions out there, but I have pared it down to the absolute essentials you will need to make your first quilt.
In the video I show you what you need and the difference between brands and price points, so you can make a decision about what supplies are best for your budget.
When I started quilting I didn't know about any of this stuff and I just bought the cheapest notions I could find. But today I don't use any of those original notions because they just aren't as good, long lasting or as easy to use as the items I show you in this video.
For example, my Fiskars Rotary Cutter broke after a couple years, but my Olfa is still going strong after nine years and thousands of cuts later.
Now obviously I own a quilt shop, and I have these notions available to sell, so you may be like, Stephanie, you are just trying to make a buck. While Quilt Addicts Anonymous is a small family business and you do support us by purchasing your notions from us, I would never recommend a product that I don't love and use every day myself.
Our goal is to get you started off with the good stuff so you have a good experience, don't have to purchase twice when you upgrade and have more money later to spend on fabric to make more quilts!

My favorite machine is a 1947 Eldridge Sewing Machine. It was the very first machine with automatic thread tension adjustment. It doesn't do a zigzag stitch but I can do almost anything and everything any of those pre-programmed push-button machines can do. (And it has all metal parts, all these years and it still purrs along sewing beautifully as long as I clean out the lint and oil it regularly.) *Thank you for the video with No Music. Very much appreciated!*
Thank you so much for this video. It has been really helpful for this old lady just getting back into quilting after thirty years. Tools have improved so much.
Glad it was helpful!
oops! Disregard first comment, i just found your
Beginner quilting video! Thxxx!
Awesome video. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.
Excellent information. Thanks for the pattern and coupon. I love your videos. Can't wait for the next video in this series.
I will need to purchase a walking foot for sure.
I am going to take my Singer to the quilt store for a good cleaning and if it sew the way I want, I am keeping it. It is about 5 yrs old.
I wish you had this tutorial when I started quilting 3 yrs ago! I got the cheap stuff & then later bought the better; wasted money! Please mention an iron & pressing table to your newbies next time😊 I am going to follow this series because I probably can still learn something from you!
Its so important to know what is important. Thank you for the video.
You are so welcome!
Great information for a beginner and now I can’t wait to get started. Thank you
You are so welcome!
thanks for this videos
Thanks!
Instead of a walking foot attachment, there is a vertical (actually 30deg tilt off vertical) 'wheel' foot used for leather that allows better material flow through. Primarily for leather work but compresses and rolls easier for quilt stacks. The wheel is 3/4 to 1 inch diameter.
Thank you. I have most of what I need and more, except for the fabric. Thank you so much. :)
Well you know we can help with the fabric 😉
@@QuiltAddictsAnonymous I will keep y'all in mind when I'm able to buy. I've already spent my budget this month.
When I quilt I need my 'best friend' The Seam Ripper... you didn't have that in your video.
Love this! What baby lock machine do you have and also which walking foot do you have ?
I also love aurafil thread, but you need a black thread also for dark materials
Which Baby Lock are you using with the built in 1/4" stitch? Thank you. Looking forward to this series!! :)
I found my fabric scissors in the garden once, being used for pruning. I have a new pair.
Helen Loney hahaha. That’s hilarious!
Is the offender still alive?
Latasha Harrison just
Great video! Is the fabric you showed on this video available? If so, what is the name of the fabric?
Do you have a set of beginner quilting tools/notions? I love your videos and wish to support you by buying my tools from you. I live in Orangeville, Ontario. Canada. Is there a special way of shipping?
What babylock machine would you recommend for a beginner?
The Jazz 2 is a great workhorse machine. It has a nice big throat space to work in, is very user friendly, and stitches 1,000 stitches per minute. It only has 28 built in stitches, but if you are using it for quilting you find that is more than what you need.
Can you tell me how much material do I need for making a double size quilt please
How much fabric you need really depends on the pattern you use. The best thing is to pick a pattern you love and go with the fabric requirements listed.
Can I get the pattern, from Canada
Hi Linda! Yes! Here is the link: shop.quiltaddictsanonymous.com/product/split-nine-patch-free-beginner-quilting-video-series-pattern/
I have fat quarters. Can I use them for this series?
Of course! The pattern is written for half yard cuts but you can easily use FQs as well.
The 1/4 inch seams confuses me. I have a foot that is supposed to be 1/4 in. When I use it to stitch a 1/4 in seam., open the pieces and measure the piece I had sewn, more than 1/4 in was sewn in the 1/4 in seam. Now my question, if the seam isn’t exactly 1/4 in and all seams are the same width, is it really a problem?
Your quilt is essentially a giant geometric puzzle, so yes, you have to get a quarter inch or it won’t fit together right. Likely your needle is in the wrong position, your fabric isn’t lined up with the edge correctly or you are having issues pressing. Try measuring your seam after you have sewn but before you press to see what the seam measures. Then consult your manual to make sure machine is on the right setting, lastly, check your positioning of the fabric. It is really easy to get off. I find the happens most often with quarter inch foots that have a guide on them. It is too easy to smush the fabric next to the guide and the seam ends up too big.
Only when you are following a pattern.
I can’t find the 20% off coupon
It's emailed to you after you download the pattern. If you still can't find it email help@quiltaddictsanonymous.com and we can help you!
Here’s my thought on fabric…yes there are really good fabrics but if you want to play with fabric and quilt and are on a limited budget…..buy what you can afford, the best you can afford but still.
Granted, not as quick as a machine, but can quilt by sewing manyally
This video is 2 yrs old, can anyone follow the tutorials anymore?
