I am Scottish person and if you do a good Scottish or Irish accent know one really cares but when u do a bad one it’s so funny (Brad Pitt is the best American to Irish accent).
@littlesmew I've heard that that's because the young actresses couldn't manage to do Northern accents so it was decided that the girls would adopt their mother's Southern accent while the boys favoured their father. However, Michelle Fairley's English accent never rang true to me as I could very clearly hear a lot of Irish (I'm an Irish woman with a mixed up accent!).
Downton Abbey will help with that. I saw an interview once were the cast that played "downstairs" explained they got lessons in speaking even though they are Northeners (apparently they needed them to slow down when talking).
Thanks Anna! And to each of you! I mostly just do accents for roles I'm cast as, but it's fun to dig into the specifics with these talented actors' performances. 😁
I'm English, i've considered myself to be pretty good doing accents myself, and i've always considered Renee Zellweger's accent in Bridget Jones to be absolutely spot on. Amy Walker is so good with accents she can pin point where Zellweger was off in Bridget Jones where I never noticed. This is a real professional!
Her English accent is quite a bit awry. Sounds half Australian almost at times. The guy who plays her brother though. Man, his accent is sooooo good. I think there was only one word he said - I forget which word it was now - that made me look him up and discover he isn’t English.
@@Pixietoria Yes, that happened to me with the brother (Felix?) as well - when he pronounced 'psychopath' like 'psyco-parth' I wondered if he wasn't actually English, and it was confirmed when later he (and Sarah) kept pronouncing 'Castor' as 'carster'. He was so, so close though. But the pronunciation of A's are so swapped between English and North-American, it always catches them out in the end.
I like to think that those times when Sarah and Felix's accents aren't entirely accurate to South London, it's because they lived in London long enough to establish their accents, but moved young enough that their accents would have been slightly warped in places. Same with Rachel. While in Canada, they would have had very little contact with their initial accents except for each other, and so it would warp over time. I would even guess that in real life their accents would be more muddled than they are on the show. You see it quite often with british celebrities that move to america - after several years there, when they are interviewed, their accents will warp in some places and they start to sound 'mid-atlantic' or just very muddled.
0:16 Maleficent 2:32 Ocean's Thirteen 5:19 The Iron Lady 7:31 Mrs. Doubtfire 10:15 Bridget Jones' Baby 12:55 The Parent Trap 16:41 Shakespeare in Love 18:31 Imagine Me & You Lovely video :)
Zac Ru Lol yes! I think she did more accents than Tat, though Tat’s job was on a different kind of hard because she plays them simultaneously. Still both really amazing though. Literal accent queens.
I was going to say she needs to do Orphan Black. I thought Sarah's accent was all over the place when I first heard it, but someone explained that she's Cockney English with an English mum who moved to Canada / US and Kira called her "mum" which is so cute they thought about that! Rachel sounds really odd to me because I've never heard anyone like her.
It’s strange to hear someone talk about the British accent as a British person I’m like do we really do that and to hear her explanation is just strange a good strange but strange none the less
Sad that there are people that don't bother to think about things like many already do on their own until some youtube video makes it explicit by using lousy actors for lcd exposure.
She is amazing! A proper character actress. When she does RP and when she does cockney she even moves her face the way respective native speakers do and it seems to massively help the accents land the way they're supposed to. Fan girling!
“One of the things that can be really tricky is to get ‘can’ and ‘can’t’ down. Particularly ‘can’t’ because if it’s too short, it can sound like a different word” 🤣🤣

For example, she says "me accent". We don't say "me" for "my". That's Cockney. We would generally run the "my" into "accent", like: "m'accent" or "ma'accent". Maybe she just got a bit muddled up.

At 7:37, there is a mistake. Mrs. Doubtfire was released in 1993, not 2003.
This is arguably the best Cockney accent I've heard an American do. The glottal stops are spot on.
Would love her to break down Jodie Comer's accents in Killing Eve
That's a great idea yes!!!
Ooooh that’s a whole video on its own
I think about this every time I watch Killing Eve
Oh god please
As a British person, the British accents she does seem pretty legit - have no idea about the others though!
I'm a bit sad there are no northern accents here! Northern accents are usually harder for Americans because they are not exposed to them so often.
They always seem to use southern accents in films.
She could have reviewed Anne Hathaway’s “Yorkshire” accent in One Day, but no one needs to hear that crap again 🙈😂
Claire Frances Gerrard Oh, please god no! Not that! 😂
Lindsay Lohan did a considerably impressive job managing to play so well the british accent as a child with barely acting experience.
No such thing as a British accent.
It was an English accent.
@@manchestertart5614 No one actually cares about this distinction because everyone knows what’s meant by it. Get over it, boomer.
I could watch Amy doing these videos forever - they're fascinating and she's soooo talented! Please, please do more! :)
Me too😊
Totally agree, she's fascinating to listen to and as a Brit this was a brilliant video - I hope she does another one as we have so many accents here.
Thanks Anna! And to each of you! I mostly just do accents for roles I'm cast as, but it's fun to dig into the specifics with these talented actors' performances. 😁
Agree - I would love if she would do one about Canadian versus American accents.
I noticed so many people raving about her first video which wasn't that long ago, so Vanity Fair clearly took note.
I'm English, i've considered myself to be pretty good doing accents myself, and i've always considered Renee Zellweger's accent in Bridget Jones to be absolutely spot on. So much so that my girlfriend (also English) thought Renee Zellweger was a Brit in real life. Amy Walker is so good with accents she can pin point where Zellweger was off in Bridget Jones where I never noticed. This is a real professional!
is anyone else trying to repeat everything she says and miserably failing
Yes, for sure!
nope, I'm british haha
Yuuup
I think I'm doing very well... but others might disagree.
Yes!! But I'm doing fairly well act'ually :)
I would pay money to see her do an analysis on all of Tatiana Maslany's accents in Orphan Black.
So would I! Especially the "clone playing another clone" accents like when Cosima tries to be Sarah or something.
But the pronunciation of A's are so swapped between English and North-American, it always catches them out in the end.
wen willoughby Ha ha- yes I think that was the word! 🤣

"What?! I'm doing the thing!!"
Yessss!
for realllll
Because of that vid I actually thought she was Kiwi.
IKR! I love her. I am so happy she did this video!
I first saw Amy's 21 (?) accent video when I was still in college. I'm now 33 and she's still kicking it! She's so amazing.
It's amazing how she impersonates every accent she's explaining. Brilliant woman!
You should do TV accents next: as in Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Black, Jodie Comer in Killing Eve, Natalie Dormer in Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
Yes!!
I feel like we need a whole episode on Jodie Comer.
Zac Ru Lol yes! I think she did more accents than Tat, though Tat’s job was on a different kind of hard because she plays them simultaneously. Still both really amazing though. Literal accent queens.
@@jdcmr There's no such thing as a 'literal' accent queen. Please stop abusing the English language.
So true
Same for us With American accents.
I couldn't help but read your comment with a british accent
@@SoufyAsth I just went to re-read the comment in an english accent. Then I realised I already did. Cus I'm english
I always say cannot instead, no confusion there. But it does come across to people I speak to as I am trying to stress on something, which obviously I am not, I just want to avoid the issue here.
And she said it calmly 😂
I was not prepared for that Margaret Thatcher impression.
I'm so sorry, Eric. I swear this is a one-time thing.
we need a collaboration!!
@@liriohardy7240 Yes!!!!
This made me giggle
I felt the same way, LOL.
Shhhh don't tell Erik!!
If she ever opens a school, she can "shut up and take my money". This kind of vocal control is really amazing.
5:41 That’s crazy. I’ve always heard people rave about Streep and how good she is and wonder how they arrived at that conclusion. I get it now. Simply brilliant.
As a Scott, I can testify that Mrs. Doubtfire has a 'boarders' accent. It's seen as a posh Scottish accent because it has English and Irish inflections.
I always thought Robin Williams was putting on a Scottish Accent especially when he says dear alot in Mrs Doubtfire
It sounds very Edinburgh to me.
Exactly.. it definitely doesn't go between Scottish and english, it's clearly a scottish accent..
As a Scot, there's one t in Scot ..
@@Disney65Fan "the borders" is an area in Scotland. It's made fun of a lot by the rest of the country and I'd say Williams is a lot closer to that than middle class Edinburgh
Damn Lindsay! Her accent for a kid is impressive.
is it just me or does she seem like a completely different person every time she does another accent-
She is an actor, after all!
was so worried she was going to say meryl was off, but nope, "dead on" 🙌🏻 MERYL IS THE GOAT
I would LOVE to see her do an in-depth look at southern American accents!
You're in luck! ua-cam.com/video/0kDzdJ07Vho/v-deo.html
As a Southerner, I would love to see this, too. Everybody (just about) in the entertainment industry butchers the Southern. We all don’t sound the same!

Holy flip I’ve never heard anyone be able to imitate a Scottish accent well - as a Scottish person I’m legit amazed - *especially* your Glasgow accent is perfect 🥺
Btw I am from Glasgow but I don’t have a very Glaswegian accent so you do it way better than me 😂😂
@Brains00007 I know, I wish I could do the same lol, I just think Scottish is particularly impressive because I have literally never heard anyone else do it right 😂
I didn't think her Scottish accent in the intro was great. Even experts seem to really struggle with Scottish accents. I don't know why. Perhaps there's less consistency across the vowels? She's better later in the video but it's still... I dunno. Something in my head rejects it...
For example, she says "me accent". We don't say "me" for "my". That's Cockney. We would generally run the "my" into "accent", like: "m'accent" or "ma'accent". Maybe she just got a bit muddled up.
Respectfully disagree. Completely.
I saw the title and rolled my eyes, thinking 'here comes another American trying do do a British accent' and wow. She absolutely nails it!
You should watch her other videos. They are amazing.
Amy Walker is a mystery. She's the most talented accent specialist I've seen. I thought she was British
Amy is a genuine delight. I've never watched a video that made me laugh out loud so many times. A pure pleasure to watch this talented lady assess these accents.
Every director should hire her to screen their movies for actors doing accents before they're released. Or better yet, every actor should hire her to teach them.
Actors already have vocal coaches for accents, they'll be just as good as Amy
They all have coaches on set. Their ultimate performance has to do with time and practice which not all movies can afford
In the cockney accent she actually sounds like she has just walked off the set of eastenders (a British soap opera that’s based in London, for everyone who doesn’t know)

She's absolutely lovely, thanks. Please bring her back.
Did anyone notice she does her version of the accent shes reviewing then does the actual review in an english accent for most of them lol shes good
This video really illustrates how technical acting really is. I'd love to see Amy in a film and just nail the accent.
Thank you!!! 🥰 Best Comment Ever for realizing all of this is just because I’m intensely committed to authenticity as an actor. ❤️ I’ve got a biopic short coming out this summer in which I do a Transatlantic accent as Suffrage martyr Inez Milholland in 1916. When she was describing how villains in Disney sound educated in the accent😻
I love how she explains the melody too, most people don't think about that
Wish she could have explored some more northern accents. Those are my favourite :D
Scotland's pretty far north.
@@willh2690 I think she means northern England.
@@Inazarab Northan England is basically sub southern Scotland.
@@willh2690 No it is not. Great Britain made up of England, Scotland, and Wales. They are separate entities. Calling Northan England sub southern Scotland is like saying northern Florida is basically Georgia. That's just not how geography works.

Often they're a strange mix of different regional accents. Never heard an American do a Manchester accent. This lady is absolutely perfect, no British person would ever know she wasn't local

her scottish accents are phenomenal.
They shoulda just made Cheadle an American in that movie. He was barely trying.
And it's not as if he can't do accents. In Hotel Rawanda he crushed it.

That part irked me when she said that.
