wow that is sooooo great!!! great video, tnx for posting. Love the song, the intro, the guitar, the singing, the performance, Clarence, everything. Priceless.
this is a good version but look up the boss doing this at the capitol theater in 78. best version everrrrrrrrrrrrrr. haha 70's Bruce is the best bruce.
Darkness came out one year to the day after my father died, and a lost 17 year old boy found something good again in life. Thanks Bruce, I wouldn't have made it without that record.
Wou! Rock saved your life! Because this is a true religión and what you see is so real that the strength and power that shows up can reilef any brokenhearted in this cruel World! Keep on! Dont stop believing!
The sound of the guitar when he bends the strings at 4:18 gives me goosebumps!! Always thought Bruce got undeserved criticism for his guitar playing style. He ain't no Mark Knopfler, who's a god on the guitar, who plays it completely different and with more "finesse". But the thing is, Bruce plays with passion and intensity, which is expressed in his solos. Bruce plays it like there's no tomorrow. I'd say he's an underrated guitar player, and incredibly fast in those young years. Love this!
One of Bruce's best "rockers!" As great as Born to Run is, with the title song, and Jungleland, my own personal favorite Springsteen album is Darkness on the Edge of Town.
Exactly Right !As I've said in several posts to various Springsteen vids: Can you imagine an America without Bruce Springsteen? Would you even want to?
*** 'But if dreams came true, oh, wouldn't that be nice' *** On this day in 1978 {June 2nd} Columbia Records released Bruce's fourth studio album, 'Darkness On The Edge of Town'... It peaked at #5 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart... Two tracks were released as singles; "Prove It All Night" {it peaked at #33 on July 16th, 1978} and "Badlands" {reached #42 on September 17th, 1978}... {Never sign a contract on the hood of a car}!!!
Back in the day Bruce played a Les Paul with a Marshall stack and that guitar was thunder!! He played rhythm and lead guitar and was known as 'Alvin Lee By the Sea'. He's since toned down that amazing crunch and reduced the role of the power guitar in his music. You had to be there to believe it, his playing alone gave you the 'chills' - incredible.
Yeah… I miss that. The first 3 records to me are my Bruce…the rest are for everyone else. The stuff you’re talking about few really know about unless they dig. That guy never got to record.
If you're talking about the Darkness box set I must say you're dreaming. This will not be the concert to be released, I am willing to bet my bucks it will be the Houston Coliseum one from December 8, 1978.
Yeah...so his 2000 performance wasn't AS GOOD as his performance 22 years earlier. Big surprise? He's still a great performer last time I saw him...two days ago.
BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!!!!!! R.I.P THE BIG MAN!!! YOU'RE THE SHIT CLARENCE! AND YOUR NEPHEW PUT ON AN AMAZING SHOW WITH BRUCE FOR THE WRECKING BALL TOUR! YOU WILL BE SURVIVED THRU THE HIM AS WELL AS THE HEART OF EVERY SPRINGSTEEN FAN ALIVE!!!!
There is no one like Bruce. I like classic rock. I like Motown. I like opera. I like jazz, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. I like some rap. Still, Bruce is unique. Melissa Etherige called Springsteen Shakespeare set to music. He is my favorite. I thought he was finished until he had his PBS interview with Charlie Rose. Then, Bruce came out with The Rising, which is excellent. My favorite song of Springsteen, New York Serenade.
right on brother. you are not a brainwashed "subject" of springsteen who thinks that just b/c he made the song it has to be spectacular. way to keep the faith and look at things objectively. how could ne one beat the 78 tour or the 75 hammersmith show? he was a God back then. his performances in those early years will never be matched by anyone again. dont worry about peeps givin u thumbs down either, they are all idiots. and btw, i envy you so much. i wish i could have gone to early shows
nah son, im saying that bruce is a great guitar player and deserves recognition as such. its like this, clarence clemens isnt the best sax player ever, but in my opinion he plays sax for the best band ever, which makes him great, b/c he contributes to the best music ever made, in my opinion. thats all im saying. i love pre 1980 springsteen, especially the hammersmith show. seriously, watch saint in the city from the hammersmith show. first time i saw that, it changed my life.
I'm sorry but I am also a guitar player and have been playing for many years. If I played you some files from Bruce's late 60's early 70's Les Paul/Marshall stuff you would be totally surprised - and I don't mean the crap that keeps getting posted on UA-cam. He's actually a great guitarist - maybe not technically the 'best' , but he plays with a lot of feeling that most players never get - no matter how many years they play. His early stuff-think Winter, Clapton, Stills, Hendrix, but very edgy.
Yes, and to all the 'expert' guitar players (who totally overlook Bruce in their 'who's great' discussions), I challenge you to create this kind of energy in your playing. Bruce has a very distinctive raw style, his bends and his 'feel' for the guitar are simply amazing. Max uses mainly Bruce's guitar to monitor every concert - Bruce even makes his rhythm playing look effortless - he routinely nails complicated rhythm parts without even a glance at his axe.
Listen to Racing in the Street from 78 and then listen to it from 08. The e street band of 78 didn't know how to handle a song like racing in the street, springsteen barked the words and try to get the end to be anthemic, where as now the band allows the music to build as it should. Are they as good now? No, but they're a different band. They're much more mature now. These old shows were all about energy, and while they were great the band didn't know how to pump the brakes.
all the versions of this from that legendary 78 tour are fantastic and different in their own way, iv'e only been able to read about that tour over the years,it's so cool to see this stuff on you tube,i think every song except badlands which was the first song from the passaic show is available on youtube, you can easily find the setlist from that show and practically watch the concert on yt the songs not available in full like backstreets you can get from another show on that tour like landover.
If I am not mistaken I was at that concert if it was at Gammage ---- which incidentally was the last time they let a rock concert perform there ---- the back balconies were shaking ------ I had front row tickets - and I saw him two nights in a row ---- I worked at Diamonds - which had a ticket outlet ----- I was first in line .
i just watched his 2000 nyc performance of prove it all night. i was so discusted i had to come here to listen to the song as it should be played and sung. im so happy this video exists. it brings me joy everyday of my life to be able to see the boss back when he was the boss ripping that shit up on guitar. and all the energy, omg, i just cant live w/o it.
...and BTW - he NEVER plays like that anymore, and I don't know why. For a while he was known as THE hot guitarist at the Jersey Shore - and they had some excellent players in some of those Shore bands. He gave it up and sticks to very simple expressive lines now - whatever - this 'guitar greats' stuff is all so subjective anyway. Stevie and Jimi were great, no doubt.
ive listened to a lot of bruce from his different years. and i have to say, the biggest dissapointment ive ever had when it comes to bruce is when i saw him live in 2005. but his voice, in my opinion, sounded best in 1978. omg what id give to see this concert live! but thats just a dream. to reiterate- he sounds like shit now, sounds awesome back then, when he was the BOSS
I remeber me and my ex had tickets to see The Boss. We separated before the concert and he wound up with the tickets. Being the jerk he is I really didn't care about us splitting, but I was f%ing pissed that I missed the show xD
me=disagreeing disagreeing=correct. politics are not life, they are a part of life we choose to live with. living in america is not life, living in america is the american way of life, and not even close the the best way of life.
you are godamn right about his early guitar playing. listen to saint in the city from the hammersmith show and tell me hes not a great guitar player. luccalscs10 is out of his fucking mind, and he doesnt know what hes talking about
i agree that alot of the older songs thunder road in particular just don't sound as good live now,but he nails the newer stuff from the rising on,but who could sound as good thirty years later,i'm intersted to see what he does at the super bowl.
totally gonna disagree with u i think hes a general gracefully leading men into battle.. awesome guitar intro watch the black n white 78 prove it all night if you want some more of a magic show.. or that whole concert for that matter
this year is the 30th anniversary of the release of "darkness on the edge of town"..hopefully there will be a re-issue package like the one "born to run" had 3 years ago and along with that maybe a whole concert from the "darkness" tour...
I was a rock critic during Bruce's heydey and his Dec. 15 SF Winterland show is my second favorite of all time (833 shows). This video brings back such great memories! I took another critic friend to Bruce that night (he'd never seen them yet) and he spent the whole time on the way to the show saying "I just don't see what you guys see in him" I let him write the review, and still have a copy. He concluded "This was the greatest rock concert I've ever seen!" Bruce could do that to you. Thanks!
Look at how young these guys were. I was 17 when they did this. Look at Max Wienberg the drummer doesnt look the part of a late 70's Drummer (Bonham, Moon, Pert... to name a few drummers of his era). Just a great great band
Fuck me he plays as good as he writes & sings. 100% pure rock and roll dyanimite. The last great american rock and roll star....and still rocking. Prove it all night...? You goddamn right.
One of the best solos I’ve heard from him on this. He did a bunch of improvisational things, mixing up what he was doing, noise, counter point, melody line variations, flash licks, emotional bends, varying quite a bit from the records mid break solo section…all this varying from most of his standard approaches to soloing in this tune live. I was quite surprised. I really wish he hadn’t shelved the guitar god bit. Him and Miami Steve would have been truly legendary in this area if they had really cut loose. But they pretty much left a lot on the table in that regard. Oh well…
just listened to pasaic. i think they did a better job recording this version. but overall i like this one a bit more, and i cant really explain it, its just tighter sounding
July 5, 1978 = 32 years ago today, I saw Bruce for the first time at the Forum in Inglewood, CA. Three days before this video was shot. My life hasn't been the same sense.
Nicely put. Oh to have a DeLorean and a fully working flux capacity so we could all go back in time & watch Bruce in his pomp from 75 leading up to the amazing gigs of 78!!
i believe you hit it on the head sir when you said legendary tour. i only wish i could have gone. my old man went to his show in rochester in 78 what a lucky bastard he is.
@finishingkick94 did Steve Winwood make the list?-he also is overlooked as a great guitarist as well as lead vocals, mandolin, piano, keyboards, writer etc.
u like this shit. go out and buy his 30th anniversary born to run box set w/ the hammersmith dvd. and watch taht shit turned all the way up. fucking incredible
17 thumbs down? Please! If that video is not proof that he may be the best musician and performer of all time, then you simply are out of touch with reality
Who would dislike this ...... seriously
wow that is sooooo great!!! great video, tnx for posting. Love the song, the intro, the guitar, the singing, the performance, Clarence, everything. Priceless.
WOW! DAN from N FALLS ONTARIO CANADA!
Goosebumps, everytime!!!
Great intro..great song..
Just before this concert, a writer for Rolling Stone Magazine wrote that Springsteen's guitar play was "marginal." This was Bruce's response.
+Dimitry Raskolnikov That writer didn't know shit.
Prove it all night and you will have a great day ahead.. !
right on brother
this is a good version but look up the boss doing this at the capitol theater in 78. best version everrrrrrrrrrrrrr. haha 70's Bruce is the best bruce.
As Pete Townsend once said, "That's f&cking triumph man!"
yea, im not wrong
So is that a compliment or insult?
*so
not in comparison to this, get a clue.
His 2000 performance was fine, get lost.
Darkness came out one year to the day after my father died, and a lost 17 year old boy found something good again in life. Thanks Bruce, I wouldn't have made it without that record.
Solid
Great comment, gave me the chills
Wou! Rock saved your life!

I want to go back I hate this century
Oh me too it sucks
thank you, US, for giving the world Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
Thank you, world, for welcoming them so enthusiastically. Remember: Clarence Clemons is, was, and always will be the President of the United States.
Bruce at his classic best.
Probably the best version of this song.. and yeah, lyrics to die for..!
The sound of the guitar when he bends the strings at 4:18 gives me goosebumps!!
Always thought Bruce got undeserved criticism for his guitar playing style. He ain't no Mark Knopfler, who's a god on the guitar, who plays it completely different and with more "finesse". there is literally nothing better than this
This is how "Prove it" should always be played.
So great.
good work my friend. you bring joy to my life 5 times a day

Check out the Passaic '78 show by the user bruchee. It's awesome. More intense than this!
@snoop769 Steve Van Sant is playing on this look at 3:08 to see him singing.
Yeah...so his 2000 performance wasn't AS GOOD as his performance 22 years earlier. Big surprise? He's still a great performer last time I saw him...two days ago.
All this time and I never Springsteen could shred like that lol, he played the SHIT out of that guitar in this song!

Love it that the Big Man is playing a triangle
The band is probably even better today, but Bruce's attempts to sing like Bob Dylan or with that lame midwestern twang he affects kills it for me
Some great guitar here, he could have been a guitar god if he'd wanted but he chose to concentrate on songwriting, and thank God for that.
... they've made their choices and they'll never know what it means to steal, to cheat, to lie; what it's like to live and die ...
@djmcg07 "Prove It All BNight" from "Winterland" San Francisco 12/15/78. Another incredible version (better than this in MY opinion)
The Big Man looks badass with the triangle!
"Winterland" San Francisco 12/15/78 is a much better version in MY opinion. Listen, and make your choice. I have it on CD.
the best white boy performance ever! i'm not a guitar virtuoso but his solo seems perfect as does the whole e street arrangement
Thanks for letting me "re-add" this video to my favorites! Anyone ever tell you Bruce can't play the ax, show 'em this vid!
Just a genius! Have your ever noticed all the greats are self taught!
@RansomII he's saying woh woh woh alright. after he ses that a couple times he starts saying i prove it aaaaaaaaal nite.
We must give the E Street Band much credit also. Those guys kicked ass too. Srpingsteen and The E Street Band = best ever.
Is int strange that you do the best before you go into the theerties! But I hope at we Prove i it all night after that.
this version used to be up before it was taken away. thank you SS much for allowing me to enjoy this again. amazing.
This is the show that will be included in the Darkness DVD box set
best version of this song ever. this is sooooo good. today marks the 190th consecutive day ive watched this vid.
How funny! This is the concert I had tickets for and when Lori backed out of going, I dumped my tickets on friends. How stupid!
First there was Elvis, then there was the Beattles then there was Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band!
@MidAgeAllisonFan We all can't wait to get that stuff into our fingers. Greetings from Hamburg, Germany.
I dont think he plays darkness songs as well as in the late 70s, but jungland and rosalita are better now
17 thumbs down? Please! If that video is not proof that he may be the best musician and performer of all time, then you simply are out of touch with reality
Bruce was setting a pretty high bench-mark for the future of rock and roll music in 1978, wasnt he...
I think it kind of fits with this (MHO). If the band tried extending a song like Candy's Room, though, I'd completely agree.
ur goddamn right it is. it is and always will be the best performance bruce ever put on in his life.
There shouldn't be a Dislike Option on this Video.....Period
If Dreams came true... i would be at a Bruce concert right now! Awwww wouldn't that be nice!!!!
Thanks for the information, i will NEVER view rolling stone magazine the same way again...
his songs are unbelievable ........... crazy good, boss is crazy hot ,,,,imean holy crap !
The 1970's to early 80's Bruce was the best Bruce ever!
@veitchy88
I have been asking the same question too...
he looks like a kid in this but I think he was like 29
I am unsure if my 1000 watt Onkyo surround sound will last much beyond November 16th.!
@itabuttrose I have since realized it was his loss, and that the Boss still rocks!
He actually just played this version in Barcelona. I can't actually believe it.
Arthritis maybe??. It's a shame he doesn't do intros & leads like this anymore.
I am here because someone I follow posted this today. Bet it probably cost 20 bucks back then to see that concert
@veitchy88 it's gonna be on the darkness box set that comes out in November...
