  • The "I Love Lucy" theme song is one of the most recognized TV themes in the world. Everybody knows the famous "Wilbur Hatch - conducting the Desi Arnaz Orchestra" version heard from the original "I Love Lucy" half-hour show run from 1951-1957.
Well when Desi wanted to shake things up and make hour-long high-budget comedies with the old "I Love Lucy" cast - featuring more guest stars, he wanted a fresh overhaul to the famous theme composed by Eliot Daniel.
That task went to the infamous music arranger Frank Comstock, who kept most of the theme (like the harp 'hits') similar - but added a lot more syncopation and flourishes - as well as a few 'punch' notes and more intricate arrangements than the first, more well-known version.
Well, even though I thought the series sucked - mainly knowing Lucy and Desi hated each other and fought often on and off stage during these final days of their marriage - to which Lucille Ball filed for divorce from Desi Arnaz the very next day after the last day of filming for the last episode of the "Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show' (aka The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour), I thought this arrangement was a blend of typical conga/cowbell rhythms as expected - and a taste of 'big-band/swing' jazzy phrasings and countermelodies sprinkled about.
Sadly, you would NEVER get HEAR a COMPLETE end credit theme as originally arranged by Comstock. Well, after slicing and dicing the exisitng 13-episode endings, and alot of matching EQs - I have accomplished in stitching together phrase after phrase - in order - so you can hear the ENTIRE ARRANGEMENT - with every note intact!
I'VE personally never heard this version complete in ANY collection, aside from the really badly sliced and diced end credits from the actual show (as found at the end of this video) - musical phrasings that some Film Music Editor had to carefully time out to make time on the syndicated shows - which are available on DVD.
Anyway, good 'ol industry legend Frank Comstock (known for TONS of TV work - and many albums for Columbia as a performing orchestra) did an interesting job in this arrangement - if you listen carefully! Unfortunately, there is not one end credit of the 13 episodes of the series which has any entire themes. Most, if not all, have been film edits of the musical score - sometimes just editing in one note or taking our 4-beats - in other words - a chop job.
Well now, seamlessly together - is a stitched together complete end theme of the "I Love Lucy" theme - conducted by Wilbur Hatch - NOT using the Desi Arnaz Orchestra (which disbanded after the TV series 'I Love Lucy' ended.). but studio musicians.
Careful listeners will hear the real sloppy mistakes made by the trumpet soloist - which really stand out after multiple plays creating this project.
