Even after her death, Lucile Ball is still the "Worlds Greatest Comedienne." There will never be another like her. Luci and Desi were pioneers in their time.
Lucy herself seemed surprised, touched, and humbled by "the world's greatest comediene" comment. And Desi adding at the end by saying, "We'll be back next time with both kids," as if they were just another family next door. At least that's how they made us feel, or who we wanted them to be. I am also tearing up. I will love Lucy and Desi forever. According to Lucie Arnaz the were better friends after the divorce. So great.
I love this show, because people actually treat each other with respect and show kindness to one another. The show also displays appreciation towards all kinds of professions and that’s just brilliant.
Ball and Arnaz were so professional, always. Even when exhausted.... and Arnaz looks tired here..... they are 'on' when those cameras are rolling. Remember, they had two very small kids at the time, a TV show to rehearse and block and perform, and they still had time for appearances like this. Amazing people.
Rebecca O'Sullian@ He may have been an alcoholic, but you can tell that he's not drunk there. Don't forget that Desi had a lot of plates up in the air. Aside from acting in "I Love Lucy," he was, also, producing the show and managing Desilu Studios. Back in the 50's, most men didn't go to their therapists to deal with stress and other problems and pressures. They drank. Beyond the comedy Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were true geniuses. They knew what America wanted. They weren't afraid to fight with the executives for I love lucy to be exactly what they wanted. #1 SHOW with a movie and film studio, producers, actors, parents. They were just all around amazing. There will never ever be another Desi, Lucy, Vivian and William!!
Desi pioneered the use (and insistence) of taping the show, this so that it could be shown at pre-programmed times across the times zones and also to be used as re-runs. Brillant business decision! It also preserved the show for other ages to view. Remember in the early days of TV, many shows were 'live' and no video exists of many erly TV shows.
Absolutely right. Without them, we wouldn't have Star Trek (The Original Series) which was produced by Desilu Productions for the first time in 1966 after being rejected by all the Networks at that time. Desi and Lucy were lightyears ahead of their time.
Desi also pioneered the use of 3 cameras filming simultaneously: master shot; medium close-up; closeup. The Arnazes mortgaged their home to finance the pilot and because the studio suits didn't think the public would buy Lucy and Desi as a TV couple, they produced the show and completely owned the rights to it. When "I Love Lucy" hit big, Lucy and Desi were sitting in the cat-bird seat.

And were there people back then that did NOT like "I Love Lucy"? Today, we have an incredible spectrum of comedy to choose from, and what is hysterically funny for some does nothing for other people. Jas22....Nope, I Love Lucy was filmed in LA the entire run of the show. They did this mainly for preservation purposes. Back in the day shows wanting live viewings in west coast tv markets were stuck watching poor kinescope versions. Desi was a pioneer in that he decided to take a financial hit (they took a $1,000 a week pay cut but had an 80% ownership of the show) and put the show to film. Another big factor was Lucille had just given birth to daughter Lucie and couldn't really uproot across the country.
+jas22 My favorite baseball player from my favorite baseball team from the time of my earliest memories. I can still remember going to my first game in person. It was in September 1957, Dodgers and Giants at the Polo Grounds and I was four years old. (Take the A train from our station in Queens, Greenwood Avenue, to Columbus Circle and then change for the D train to the 155th Street-8th Avenue station.) Being extremely precocious, I knew most of the players and I certainly knew when he would step into the left handed batters box with that big blue #4 on his back. I rooted for him to hit a home run every time up and he hit one: a three-run shot that put the Dodgers in the lead to stay. It was the last game the Dodgers would win against the Giants at the Polo Grounds. The next day was when the last Dodger-Giant game was played in NYC and Curt Barclay of the Giants outdueled Don Drysdale of the Dodgers. The following April, they were playing each other at Seals Stadium in San Francisco and the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. And I never got to see a game at Ebbets Field (although my big brother saw two of them there). I forgave my dad ... eventually!

I asked what & why she had so many? Even as a child, a girl couldn't wear pants of any type to school & that was later in the 60s.

Loved this show! Loved the baseball scorekeeeper, the pickpocket, and especiallly Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball in their good days, at the top of their game.
Their daughter, Lucie, told how when Desi was dying, Lucy was on the phone with him saying over and over, "I love you, I love you, I love you.........." They couldn't live together......but the love never died.
@@Cosmo-Kramer There was Gracie Allen, Martha Raye, the late Mabel Normand, and Phyllis Diller was on her way up in 1955. But yes, Lucy was the most famous comedienne in the world at that time.
Love this. And I really love just how these fine folks, guests, hosts and contestants, ARE with each other. It’s just so pleasant to watch and experience
I remember being a very small girl...............and seeing Arlene's heart necklace, and wanting one very badly. Fast Forward to 1985. I got one. Not as large, but a diamond heart necklace just the same.
Desi: "The Swiddish one" The host: "Swiddish?" Lucy: "...Cuban Sweede." Gold. I LOVE her. And I know it didn't work out for their marriage but I will never love any comedic couple more than this one :)
This was such a wonderful show. Whenever I feel like a flight of nostalgia to take me out of today's world, What's My Line is the perfect ticket. And to the commenter below, yes, Lucy and Desi were good at hiding their marital problems, but if you know what to look for, you can tell from their body language that they are not close. But they knew how to keep up a professional act. And in response to another commenter, Desi Arnaz remained a powerful force behind the camera after he stopped performing in front of it. As far as producers go, Goodson-Todman and Desi Arnaz -- the first for game shows and the other for sitcoms -- changed television forever. Look up Desilu Productions and see how many shows he created produced. He was a brilliant man.
LauraMorland Thanks for your comment-- I'm glad you enjoy the shows, and I appreciate the insight you've offered into Lucy and Desi. As I recall, Desi produced the first season of "The Lucy Show" after their divorce, didn't he? I always wondered how they managed to make that work at all!
What's My Line? According to the editors of Wikipedia, "The original Desilu company continued long after Arnaz's divorce from Ball and her remarriage to Gary Morton. Desilu produced its own programs and provided facilities to other producers. Desilu produced The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lucy Show, and Star Trek." However, the show itself did not survive their divorce (in 1960): "The black-and-white series originally ran from October 15, 1951, to May 6, 1957, on CBS. After the series ended in 1957, however, a modified version continued for three more seasons with 13 one-hour specials, running from 1957 to 1960, known first as The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show and later in reruns as The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour." I can remember learning about their divorce (I was 5 years old) and being very sad about it. However, the original show remained in reruns (Desi was the first person to institute TV reruns!) and so I forgot about it while enjoying the show.
What's My Line? P.S. Where do you get these copies of the show? I looked it up because I stumbled upon Kitty Carlisle's autobiography and had misremembered that she was a regular panelist on the show. Kitty states that people were always getting her an Arlene Francis -- by the way, they had known each other since they were both starlets in the 1930s -- mixed up, She added that her in opinion "What's My Line" was a more important show than "To Tell The Truth." But I see from UA-cam that Kitty was a fairly frequent guest panelist on WML... and I just realized that she stood in for Dorothy Kilgallen on the Sunday after her death. Arlene Francis looks terribly grief-stricken in that episode, by the way; the two women must have been very close.
+What's My Line I either read or saw an interview recently (probably with daughter Lucie if it was the latter) that after their divorce and when he was still involved with Desilu before she bought him out, he would show up at the studio when Lucy was either rehearsing or doing whatever show she was in at the time. It was a test of her professionalism as it made it more difficult for her.
@@jamesjay5343 Next thing you'll tell me it was also the night of that big thunderstorm in Hill Valley 1955 when Marty McFly tries to get back Gray's sports almanac from Chad Biff...
I have read much about Desi and Lucy and you are very perceptive. Lucy WAS actually shy and Desi was the outgoing one. It is said he was the life of the party when they were entertaining at home while Lucy was serious and quiet. She was a complex person and he was a typical Latin womanizer. She couldn’t understand why he would say he only loved her, and that his dalliances didn’t mean anything. Even after they split up and both remarried, they remained close until Desi’s death. A tragic love story for Lucy and Desi.
Lucy Was a Beautiful # 10 Looking Woman, Even in her Older Age May she & Desi RIP & Brought a lot of Joy to us Growing up with her & Desi etc. They are Sadly Missed by all who Loved them etc.
Stunningly beautiful woman, we forget that she was a successful model, before her break in movies. I think she is in the top 10 of the most beautiful women in classic hollywood.
It's really nice to see a show and a time when women were ladies and men were gentlemen....in speech, attire, modesty, poise as well as charm. Unlike today when vulgarity is the norm. It is quite a shame how society has turned out.
oh please..typical liberal reply..the 1950's werent perfect but there sure was alot more class, morality and modesty in society unlike most of the media today which is vulgar, dumbed down , twisted, immoral and morally messed up
Adriana Jimenez that has always been my dream...I would absolutely love to do that..I can't imagine anything in the world that would be more exciting to do then spend time in every era

I have watched all of them from the beginning through this one, and this one made me laugh more than any other. I don't normally care for Robert Q. Lewis, but he was on a roll during the mystery guest. Lucy and Desi were funny. Swiddish. I was dying.
Really enjoyed this re-run with Lucy and Dezi! ~Much honor to these 2 consummate Entertainers, for the Laughter They Brought to America, and the World! True Story, I bought a puppy the day she passed, and named her Lucy! Cocker Spaniel! Brought much joy!
I love Lucy originally ran from October 15, 1951, to May 6, 1957 and so at the time of this show they were still doing new shows. What is beyond amazing is I dont think even after that its ever been off the air.
There is no comparison from the entertainment in the 50s and 60s 2 today now it is for the most part of noxious too loud to Speedy and only for the segment of our society that does not know the difference in quality. However I do have to say some of it is quality but I would say most of it is not do the trick for me
People had so much class back then. They really were america's heros. Both rose up from nothing to the peak of their profession even owning a studio and they both represented marriage and family. You could see there were very much in love. I believe Lucille when she spoke of the letters that she received of people begging her not to divorce. The TV studio bosses said America would never accept a Cuban married to Lucille and when they divorced America could not imagine them being separated from each other. America knew the whisperings that Desi drank and was unfaithful but to America this couple was family and America reacted to them as if they were family. That is as much a compliment, to be loved as family by an entire nation, as is rising from poverty to aristocracy.
Although, one has to wonder...20 years of a hit series...plus a major Hollywood Studio...one has to wonder...what happened to all that money? Lucy died and her house hadn't been remodeled since "The Lucy Show" went off the air. The whole house had to be gutted because it was so out of date...and the jewelry...it certainly didnt wind up with Lucy Arnaz.
Yes, he was anoyed and rightly so. Especially in those days when everything none white was hated, stereotyped and misunderstood. He did right to set his boundaries.

Loved seeing this! Lucy and Desi will always be my favorite couple. How fantastic it was at tbe end when the panelists told the TV audience the color of Lucy's blouse (cashmere pink) and Desi's tie (blue)in those days of B/W television .
There was something innocent, kind and classy about this show that we are missing today.

What a treat to watch. I love and miss them both
Lucille seemed so touched when Robert said that. Deservedly so. Comedy has NEVER been the same. No man or woman has come anywhere near her talent.
Lucy and Desi come in at 17:00 :)
But watching the pickpocket was just as great as getting to the Desi and Lucy stuff
Thank you!
Big deal
orhugs thank you I fast forwarded to find them.
orhugs thank you I fast forwarded to find them.
Desi Arnaz was one good looking man.
And their son wasn't bad either!!!😊😊😊
My mom's best friend was married to a man that looked like Desi Arnaz
Even as an older man with white hair, he was quite good looking.
Dezi's "umhmm's" were too funny!
So was Lucy's "Swidish" accent!

When he was on alone in 1951, he tried to use a french accent. And almost blew it but caught himself. U can c the mess up
Shows like this should be back on tv
Unfortunately the same type of people don't exist😢
I love those two. I still watch I Love Lucy.
The respect the panel had for Lucy and Desi is very evident in the banter between them..
They were awesome! I miss Lucy and Desi. Though divorced I believe, deep down, they loved each other all of their lives.
Their daughter, Lucie, told how when Desi was dying, Lucy was on the phone with him saying over and over, "I love you, I love you, I love you.........." They couldn't live together......but the love never died.
YES, I BELIEVE THAT WAS CERTAINLY TRUE.OXOXXO SNIF.
Man the applause when they entered, they were rock stars. Also "Desi's tie was blue" is hilarious :D
Well they were the biggest couple under the stars at that time.
I can't believe it took the panel all that time to figure out who they were. The applause alone was a giveaway.
They lived in L.A, so seeing in them in New York was a big thrill.
Wow even back in 1955 Lucy was already revered as a legend that the man on the left called her the world's greatest comedienne.
Well, to be frank, she was one of the ONLY comediennes in the world.
@@Cosmo-Kramer There was Gracie Allen, Martha Raye, the late Mabel Normand, and Phyllis Diller was on her way up in 1955. But yes, Lucy was the most famous comedienne in the world at that time.
@@lemorab1 And may I add Joan Davis?
@@ginnylorenz5265 You may, but I'd put Lucy and Gracie at the very top.
Arlene is so beautiful and vivacious, how could she be married to a dork like Martin Gabel.
And hers was stolen in the 80’s. 😪
Arlene and dorothy where gorgeous back in the days. And am 32 lol
Good for you!
tony tony said you and Jean Valjean both.
Desi: "The Swiddish one"
The host: "Swiddish?"
Lucy: "...Cuban Sweede."
Gold. I LOVE her. And I know it didn't work out for their marriage but I will never love any comedic couple more than this one :)
I love this episode so much. I just love Desi Arnaz and Lucy so much! 💙💙💙💙
23:05 i just love the way Desi says "what darling?"
I know. Me too.
Both of these brilliantly talented comic geniuses were also devastatingly attractive physically...and oozing charm...just beautiful!
Desilu produced The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lucy Show, and Star Trek."
However, the show itself did not survive their divorce (in 1960): "The black-and-white series originally ran from October 15, 1951, to May 6, 1957, on CBS. After the series ended in 1957, however, a modified version continued for three more seasons with 13 one-hour specials, running from 1957 to 1960, known first as The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show and later in reruns as The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour."
I can remember learning about their divorce (I was 5 years old) and being very sad about it.
+What's My Line
I either read or saw an interview recently (probably with daughter Lucie if it was the latter) that after their divorce and when he was still involved with Desilu before she bought him out, he would show up at the studio when Lucy was either rehearsing or doing whatever show she was in at the time. It was a test of her professionalism as it made it more difficult for her.

Love that this took place during the 1955 World Series, Dodgers vs. Yankees. This is a great time capsule!
Not only that, this was broadcast the evening of Game 5, where Duke Snider hit 2 HR and a double in the Dodgers 5-3 win over the Yankees.
All I know is....I wish I lived in those times!!!
@@jamesjay5343 Next thing you'll tell me it was also the night of that big thunderstorm in Hill Valley 1955 when Marty McFly tries to get back Gray's sports almanac from Chad Biff...
This was so enjoyable, I was laughing out loud. Thank you for these wonderful old (great shows).
I've always really liked Desi Arnaz. He was a remarkable, talented and innovative man.
i love seeing Lucy out of character, she is so sweet & has a almost a shyness about her.
Desi Arnaz was a genius!! Without him filming the Tv shows like a movie we would not have Star Trek!!!
Mr. Perry performed before the Queen ...... the same Queen who was the Queen in 1955 and is still the Queen in 2020!
Give us a break.
Lucy Was a Beautiful # 10 Looking Woman, Even in her Older Age May she & Desi RIP & Brought a lot of Joy to us Growing up with her & Desi etc. They are Sadly Missed by all who Loved them etc.
The 'Mystery Guests' are REAL stars!!!
America was great back then. If only we could go back in time
"ITS BOTH OF THEM!" LOL
Oh my goodness, I wasn’t even 6 months old when this was made. Love seeing this. 🤩
3GDOSRSFS All thanks to the hippies and flower girls. If they only knew.
The days of my childhood. It would be great to return to that civilized time.
Ah yes, I sure do miss the good, old fashioned, sexism of the OLD days.
3GDOSRSFS Ah yes. I sure do miss all the good, old fashioned, sexism of the OLD days...
oh please..typical liberal reply..the 1950's werent perfect but there sure was alot more class, morality and modesty in society unlike most of the media today which is vulgar, dumbed down , twisted, immoral and morally messed up
wish I could go to every era and spend 1 day
Adriana Jimenez that has always been my dream...I would absolutely love to do that..I can't imagine anything in the world that would be more exciting to do then spend time in every era
A time traveler
I had that same dream for many years also.
I'm with you on that.
Maybe in heaven.
I love how Victor G. Perry signed his name. I always admired the penmanship of that era.
Me, too!
More laughs in just a few minutes than many shows get in an hour. The questions were funny, the answers were funnier and the panel was a scream.
Wasn't alive when William Frawley died but was when Vivian, Desi and Lucy passed. Broke our hearts. They are missed!!
We've lost so much goodness and class since those days.
Lol goodness and class. None of the lives of these people were good or classy. One was murdered, another was a mistress, another sued for plagiarism, one was an alcoholic wife beater and another was a battered wife. What you see on the screen is not real. It's TV
@@zazabrown732 I love watching this show but the comments are so damn delusional, lmao. The entertainment industry isn't any different today.

Have we ever?
Vic Perry, the pickpocket, died just 19 years after this episode. He also played in "The Atomic Man", "Julius Caesar", "Raiders of the River", "Mozambique" and a few other shows and movies. I wish I could find a video of Victor G Perry pickpocket.
Oh my gosh this episode was really quite fascinating/fun...62 years later? Wow!!!
I have watched all of them from the beginning through this one, and this one made me laugh more than any other. I don't normally care for Robert Q. Lewis, but he was on a roll during the mystery guest. Lucy and Desi were funny. Swiddish. I was dying.
Desi was soo charming and handsome 😇Lucy always gorgeous 😇
Really enjoyed this re-run with Lucy and Dezi! ~Much honor to these 2 consummate Entertainers, for the Laughter They Brought to America, and the World! True Story, I bought a puppy the day she passed, and named her Lucy! Cocker Spaniel! Brought much joy!
Aww..
I enjoy these retro shows with my 56 years young self
Can we please talk about the calligraphy of each contestant? Amazing!
How nice it is that Lucy and Desi were both true fans of the show.
It may be the teacher in me but each time I watch these I love the writing on the chalkboard! lol Thanks for sharing!
Sad todays younger generation cannot even read cursive writing.
Love how thye stayed and chatted with Lucy and Desi, They were special.
Wow a pink mink blouse on Lucy. She was known for wearing beautiful clothes.
I think Desi was a super nice guy.
I love Lucy originally ran from October 15, 1951, to May 6, 1957 and so at the time of this show they were still doing new shows. What is beyond amazing is I dont think even after that its ever been off the air.
Everytime I see Lucy and Desi together especially black and white film , it is like art walking on legs
There is no comparison from the entertainment in the 50s and 60s 2 today now it is for the most part of noxious too loud to Speedy and only for the segment of our society that does not know the difference in quality. However I do have to say some of it is quality but I would say most of it is not do the trick for me
I love them so much! I wish Desi was a faithful husband because they're such a cute couple.
Everyone loved Lucy and Desi but by no means was he a faithful husband but they did love each other till the end 😳
Lucille Ball was very beautiful in her younger years.Especially in her movies period ( late 1930s- 1940s)
I watched a Three Stooges episode. And Lucy was probably 22 years old in that T.S. episode
@@GBR1111-x2tShe was gorgeous speaking Pig Latin in that one, which was one of the Stooges’ very early shorts.
I absolutely loved the segment with Mr. Perry. Anyone who can do what he does simply amazes me.
Thank you for posting this. I miss Lucy. x
Watched them since I was 3... I’m 60 now...I LOVE ❤️ LUCY!!!
It's amazing how different handwriting has become.
Swidish. Even in real life Lucy made fun of his accent. Too funny.
Yeah, but he didn't like at all...
@Rene S You're right. He would allow his accent to be made fun of on the show, but only Lucy could do it. He wouldn't allow others to do it.
Yes, he was anoyed and rightly so. Especially in those days when everything none white was hated, stereotyped and misunderstood. He did right to set his boundaries.

Bcause, tho Mr. Arnaz, may not have appreciated it, @ da time.... we loved him, 2! Accent, & all.
I do understand tho. I have spent time around lotz of Cuban Americanz & tho there were lotz of misunderstandingz, & relationshipz dat went down n flamez, from da start. Da people I got along wit, were VERY lovable & made da horrible job we were doing 2gether, bearable. I do know, they would sumtimez hold themselvez back, bcause they felt they had no grasp of da language & I'd try & tell em, my English, iz just azz bad azz my Spanish!
