I remembered the first time I saw this scene as a kid I was completely traumatized. This was one of the first times I ever saw something this brutal in a movie. They definitely had the guts to pull this off.
u fat lil skid
1:05 Very brutal
You watched this as a kid! You must have bad parents
@@williamnewland4706 first off I watched this at my cousins house. Secondly, you must have had bad parents if they raised a kid so disrespectful. I'm willing to bet you've seen some stuff your parents shouldn't have let you see. It's called life dude grow up.
@@crazyfun5150 I was playing diddy kong racing not GTA San Andreas when I was a kid never had a phone till I was 15 nah mate my parents brought me up right not letting watch or play video games that was rated 18
Man I'm 43 and this scene still hits me. Seeing this as a kid its just one scene that always sticks with you.
To bring some context to the comment. I saw this in the theater when it came out with my dad. I was seven years old. It was pretty common back then for kids to see these violent action movies in the theater since we were with our parents. Total Recall, Aliens, Terminator,, Commando, Beetlejuice ect. Would not take back those movie going experience. But maybe a little too much violent stimulation for a kid looking back now. I put in Beetlejuice because when he turned into the snake scared the hell outta me lol.
Tengo 41 y la Vi de adolescente y fue impactante 😩
This hits me harder now than when I was a kid.
I saw this when I was 8 or 9 years old when it came out on VHS and it was by far the most brutal scene I'd ever watched. Then that 70s show came out on TV all those years later and when I saw Red Foreman: "OMG THAT JERK FROM ROBOCOP!"
@@mickeyd8768 Yeah I can't look at him the same after RoboCop either lol. That man is a hell of an actor.
I remember my parents thinking it's Robocop what could go wrong,we rented the tape and 10 minutes in this happens.Good times
Hahaha and did u watch the whole thing??
Dude, same.
Same, dude
This is still one of the most brutal scenes I've ever seen in a movie
Clarence (Kurtwood Smith) & his gang kill Alex Murphy (Peter Weller) one the most sadistic in this movie

Kudos to Clarence for having an inclusive, diverse gang.. a man ahead of his time
I actually thinks it gives them an edge.
Most gangs that form around race or politics have some type of (in their mind) moral framework.
These guys don't care about race. They don't care about anything.
Pure nihilistic rage.
Just watched this scene for the first time in about 30 years and I still get the same feeling I got when I saw it for the first time as a kid. One of the most brutal death scenes I've ever seen.
Totally...
The 80s were notorious for action films having extended brutal scenes.
✋😢
Paul Verhoeven always makes violence and gore over the top in his films, like Starship Troopers or simply Basic Instinct which is a thriller but boeh its brutal and gory sometimes. And that’s only a good thing!
This scene used to make me cry when I was a kid. Still brutal after all these years.
At least the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games exist to give us our much needed therapy :,)
The most disturbing part for me when I was a kid, was how the bad guys actually enjoyed the execution.
This was perhaps our first introduction to psychopaths as children
@@richiefranklin76 yup. Ironically the policeman they murdered end up returning back to life as a cyborg and the first one to saw him pissed his pants saying it's impossible they killed him.
The henchmen we're pure evil, even Clarence recognises Murphy's had enough and puts him out of his misery.
Well, because it IS enjoyable. It's entertaining to watch
The worst part is the hypocrisy.
Back when cinema have the guts to bring out so much gruesome and brutal deaths which is why the 80's are the best.
They damn sure is the 1980s Rock 😜😛
the guts to bring out guts
I don’t watch many movies but even I’ve seen more gruesome stuff in more modern movies than this 🤨
they still do...just not in mainstream movies
Ok boomer
One of most sadistic, brutal and tragic deaths in movies.
This is easily the most violent movie I've ever seen that's not horror. And only maybe 10% of R-rated horror movies I've seen are more gruesome than this.
No esta muerto solo esta desmayado wey
Not tragic...
This reawakened a very dark childhood memory. Poor Murphy. I will say though, this scene was so important in establishing rapport with the audience on the strong, visceral need for justice to come back around.
Yeah you actually hate these guys and the toxic waste scene is a he deserved that moment.
Yep poor Murphy yep
I was 15 when I first saw this scene and I couldn't get it out of my head, I wouldn't say traumatised but certainly left me quite disturbed and shaken by the graphic nature of what happened and how they enjoyed what they did. I kept having to tell myself it's just acting and it didn't really happen but very disturbing and it's no less graphic all these years later.
At 5 years old i watched more brutal movies than this.. idk how can people be traumatized by this
that scene was scarier than any horror movie when i was a kid..just the feeling of having your hand exploded and ppl laught at you then get shot and still get laught at you..that was something
As a kid I wanted to become a cop, until I saw this scene 😂
I wanted to join the army until I saw Starship Trooper.
@@MarquisDeSangif the movie followed the book power armor would had been in the first movie
@@MarquisDeSang exactly! same here lol
So Paul Verhoeven did his job well!
It's just copaganda to condition people into thinking police brutality is justified.
Thanks for not including the edited TV version. This is how people love and remember RoboCop: A delicious R-rated gorefest.
I watch Robocop on TCM last month in Stars of The Month: Robots
This scene is still a very tough watch which is incredible considering this movie is over 35 years old. Saw this at only 7 years old and was pretty traumatized.
Yeah too young for that, but I did a bit of the same thing with some horror films so I'm just as self guilty.
You shouldn't have seen it.
You're around my age when I first saw it. I have always remembered it. It leaves a permanent impression.
The hand that Clarence blasts off is the *SAME EXACT HAND* RoboCop kills him with: USB SHIV!
Ohhhh yesss😊👍
I didn't know that great find
Poetic JUSTICE.
Kurtwood did such a great job in this movie
I don't know why he wasn't cast in more evil parts. I think he wuda been an excellent General Zod
Sorry but my man Murphy took 4 shotguns unloading onto him all at once and was still alive.
What a unit.
Can you explain why his arm came off so easily for the rest of your body Centre stay intact. While we saw him at the ER hjs chest many fine
@@Grant80 Body armor
@@Grant80 Shotguns are very powerful firearms capable of ripping the common person to shreds and most body armor only covers the main torso where most vital organs are and to allow mobility for the arms. Also realistically 3-4 shots with shoguns should gone through his armor in seconds and he took several blasts with his arm blown off which by itself should have killed him from extreme blood loss and trauma. Because this is an 80s film and is meant to take place in a semi futuristic environment, I let it go because I imagine in their universe body armor is way more advanced and considering he came back as tank like cyborg I'd say their technology was way ahead of it's time.
@@TheSeventhDeadlyMatador makes sense.
@@Grant80 plot armor
Yup, 30 years later and that still freaks me out.
This movie is absolutely brutal, even for today standards. Back then, it was a shock to watch.
This scene is still one of the most gruesome and horrifying death scenes in movie history.
Alex Murphy up until this point represents a bit of an "every man" in the story. We know only that he's a proud husband, father and he's a good cop. 20 minutes into the movie, we haven't formed too many preconceptions about our hero.
Which makes his coming death scene that much more powerful.
As soon as Alex saw Clarence sauntering up the stairs towards him, there's a subtle shift in his demeanor to show that he fears what is coming.
Murphy doesn't resist Clarence removing his helmet, he doesn't so much as react. Murphy doesn't want to give these thugs the satisfaction of him reacting or trying to fight back at this point.
His only hope is Lewis and that she is on her way to his position or getting backup.
Once Joe walks in announcing "I took her out", that hope is immediately extinguished. Murphy is now alone against 5 shotgun wielding thugs, and he has just killed one of their own.
Murphy knows he's about to die and nothing he can say or do will very likely change that fact. So instead he shows candor even in the face of a violent death.
Clarence jovially taunts Murphy with the question "You probably don't think I'm a very nice guy? Do ya?"
Murphy's response "Buddy I think you're slime", whilst probably not the wisest words given the situation, presented the only alternative to begging for mercy or remaining completely stoic. Both would not have likely helped him either.
It's only when the thugs laugh at this response, with Murphy's arm forcefully placed under Clarence's foot, and Clarence turns the response around into a bit of "sport", that the tension really ramps up. As soon as Murphy's hand is blown off, and a joke is made at his expense "Well give the man a hand!" the tension is broken, and we begin to feel immediate anguish for Murphy.
There's something gut-wrenching with the whole situation now.
His Crucifixion is turned into "entertainment" for these thugs and the horror dawns only too late that there is no escape ("Turn around man").
There are no cutaways to someplace else, only to Lewis trying to get to her partner. We're still trapped inside with them, so there's no way out.
The repeated shotgun shots, the helpless partner unable to assist, the casual manner of the thugs laughing at the inflicted violence, all become an inescapable and vicious nightmare.
The violence becomes palpable. Where we ironically laughed at the ridiculousness of the violence during Kinney's death, we are in shock at the violence now.
When Clarence finishes Murphy with the coup de grace, we do not feel relief that the violence is finally over. We're left in shock at what we've just witnessed.
A human being, our "every man" who was in a position of "moral" authority (a cop) has just been humiliated, mutilated and brutally killed in the line of duty.
His death transcends beyond a superficial physical experience. The experience awakens a primal desire for justice and revenge.
His resurrection is the response which awakens on its own to carry this out.
Pretentious, but accurate to a degree.
You talk too much
Beautifully said, never seen a more accurate response.
Great breakdown of the scene!
@@DragonlordXV So do you. STFU.
Clarence and his fellas are one of the Best villains in movies
I was absolutely terrified watching that scene as a kid, but his get-back was one of the most satisfying part of Robocop
Incredible scene, it seems that the criminals were real. For me one of the best performances of the gang.
Murphy was basically tortured to death in this scene. First his hand and arm being blown off and then taking around 15 shot gun blasts to the chest. Yes the bullet proof vest caught all of the bullets, but Murphy would still feel the agonizing pain from them.
I don’t think the vest would have stopped those rounds at such close proximity
@@bartoni79 yes but we are in the future…so perhaps they are more advanced armors than the ones in the present
depends on the type of shot used in the shotgun really, if it was small pellets, then yes a normal body armour would have, but they would have still spread to the point where some pellets would have hit more vulnerable areas
Murphy being tortured was supposed to be an analogy to Jesus’s torture and cruxifixction on the cross according to what the director said in past interviews
It's so disturbing how these are just regular criminals but have no emotion to the fact they just shot his hand off.
They're not "regular" criminals, they are by far the most evil type of bandits you can imagine : coldblooded, very sadistic and savage but also very smart and competent. Compare with the other criminals of the movie (Miller, hophead, the two rapists, Sal...) who are definitely more "regular".
They did show emotions, just in the form of pure joy and excitement.
@@TheJonflowers well I guess your right but those are dark emotions, I basically meant sane emotions I should have clarified that but you are right it is a fact nether the less
I think it is interesting that Clarence is the one who gives Murphy mercy in the end. Clarence seems sickened by the others enjoyment in Murphy's prolonged torture. The most Human of them all may also be the most cruel of them too... He is their leader after all...
@@odoaceroftheneoromanempire7178 Clarence doesn't feel mercy for Murphy, he is just bored by the agony screams. And it's time for the gang to leave the playground.
As a kid in the early 90s Murphy/Robocop was one of the first super heroes for me. I just did not understand at the time how sad and tragic Murphy’s story really was.
This is the only movie that I ever saw at a drive in. My girl was repulsed by the level of violence. Hard to believe that was 35 years ago.
So, did you guys get married?

So I guess you didn’t get laid that night?
I would love to experience a drive-in. Make out with your girlfriend in the car.
It's not just the gore, it's the pure evil and savagery of Clarence's gang that makes this scene so shocking.
Ah the 80s where action movies were made for adults but marketed at children
@M M What do you mean "and?"?
Because the studios knew it would be the kids who would watch the movie. 😊
I’ve seen almost every SAW movie, and some pretty crazy supernatural movies, but this one scene is probably the most unsettling scenes I’ve seen. Don’t even have the words.
Alright I don't think this is worse than SAW now, let's not get too ahead of ourselves...
You probably think I'm not a nice guy.😂😂😂
Brutal, testament to how good the effects were for the time too as they still look great 30+ years later
Seeing this as an 8 year old kid in the 80s traumatised me. I still see it when I close my eyes and go to bed. The best movie of the 80’s
"Buddy think yur slime." One of the greatest lines ever!
When I saw RoboCop in the theater back in the day, this scene made the girls in the row ahead of me begin to weep.
Not every day a movie takes a nice guy and butchers him before your eyes.
Good storytelling though because, after this, you hate the villains so badly you can't wait to see them suffer.
Yes exactly! You literally cheer when Murphy kills them.
You want to punish a disobedient child? No groundings. No spankings. No time-outs. You simply make them watch this scene, and they’ll never wrong you again.
Yes, because they'll probably think their parents would blast them to death with automatic assault weapons if they step out of line.
I see what you mean.
@@hagdore Are you being sarcastic?
"Buddy I think you're slime"
Somehow that meant much more than a big "F you."
Such an insane brutal scene, but necessary to establish pure evil & set the tone for this movie.
Good to know he turned into a somewhat good guy after marrying Kitty and having kids.
Unfortunately he has to marry Kitty who gave birth to Laurie and Eric ,to do that RoboCop had to kill Clarence to be reincarnated to Red Forman who was born in 19 thirty something.
Back when Bad Guys in movies were scarier :D
This is still one of the most brutal and iconic death scenes in movie history
Nananananananana, nanananananana boom!
My wife spilled coffee over Kurtwood Smith once at an outdoor concert in London. He was behind us in queue at a drinks stand, we'd just bought our coffees, she turned kinda suddenly as he stepped forward and splash - he ended up with coffee on his expensive looking coat. Mr Smith was very pleasant and understanding about the whole thing but my wife was more concerned about me. I'd turned white as a sheet. All I could say was "Don't you know who that was or how lucky we are to still be alive?"
This is still the most brutal scene of any movie.
Have you seen Bone Tomahawk? 😮
The 'Nininninininininininini" still gives me chills
Long before we know Quentin Tarantino and films like Hostel, Wrong Turn.. RoboCop in 1987 has shown itself to be a film full of violence and brutality
Red took the 80s pretty hard I see.
😂😂
I was in tears on '88 watching this 😢
Brutal scene. Definitely one of the reasons why we come back watch this again . Won't be recreated again . I was traumatized as boy when I saw this .
HELLO!! TO ALL OF YOU.. AMERICANS WHO CREATED THESE FILMS, ROBOCOP, TERMINATOR ETC.. YOU MADE US DREAM!! GREETINGS FROM ITALY ... life is short robocop will live forever in our memories!
This is the directors cut. THE cut imo. Fact Murphy survived right to the end just displays the strength of his soul... a strength that would keep him hanging on... even beyond death and into resurrection. It then becomes story of wanting to see these evil bastards die at Murphy's hands. One by one.... they do 👍
I thought there was somethin different. I don't remember the extra part where the rest of his arm gets blown off. Also when he's writhing in pain right before getting shot in the head. Almost looks like they used a prosthetic face, or lots of makeup. Still brutal as all hell.
He survived because they were shooting into body armour.
@@longtallshorty5791Yeah, absolutely brutal. Pure blunt force trauma all over his torso, his insides must’ve been like jelly. Poor Murphy.

Robocop with the most diverse villains
This was brutal…even for the 80’s.
This scene was brutal and unexpected if you watched in a movie theater

That's what he gets for not waiting for backup. This wouldn't happen, if he waited for the other police.

Kurtwood Smith was and still one of the underrated and unspoken actors from then until today.
Great comedy should be on Disney tv
I also watched this movie when I was young
It was the strongest scene from this film
The films of the 80's and 90's were really strong, challenging films and worth watching
Good old practical effects in perfection
Even practical effects could fail. Remember the long arms at the end?
basically not suitable for children. but still this is one of the best movie in my childhood
Is it wrong that I saw this as a kid and wasnt phased but traumatized as an adult 😂
I watched this movie in my childhood and I still have no idea why Robocop became such a popular movie among kids. The 1990s were something else.
Definitely ONE of the most brutalistic moments in movie history! Before his death, I was glad that he told Clarence the truth even being outnumbered:
"Buddy, I think your slime."
Now THATS how you go out. No fear. He got his revenge becoming RoboCop. Happy for that, at least.
Very useful bulletproof jacket 👍🏻
I watched a film not too long ago while sitting up one night and cant remember its name. But clarence was in it playing a normal little man and nothing like this part. Just shows how well he pulled this off. Hes a superb villain!
Does it hurts, does it hurts!!!
This scene reminds us why RoboCop should never ever be remade!
They tried in 2014. It was very mediocre. Car bomb in that one.
Smith had a lot of fun playing Clarence.
So nice of Murph to find the energy and out the extra effort into standing up to provide a bigger target.
Nightmare of my childhood.
God, I love the 80's action movies
Does it hurt does it hurt? 🤣
😬 Oh man... I think Robocop has the most brutal origin story than any other superhero origin story.

The sick thing about this scene is that all of Clarence's goons know what Murphy's fate is and are already laughing about it, while poor Murphy hasn't even registered how much danger he is in until his hand is actually blown off. I don't even think he thought Clarence was going to do anything, probably thought he was trolling.

I only saw the R versoin of this as a kid and I still remember it, watching the unrated/directors cut version that this full scene is form yeah, no doubt traumatized kids.. The unrated version of this movie is bonkers with how brutal and bloody it was.
of course he knew they were going to kill him...
The brutal killing in itself was horrible, but the screaming from Murphy was crippling .But the terror and horror in the eyes of his partner watching in helplessnes was even more horrifying.
