Well, there are plenty of interviews where he talked about his early days. Most of the years you mentioned were at Harvard, so he was mostly writing for the Harvard Lampoon and studying. He has a few epic tales of pranks that he pulled there on both Bill Cosby and Burt Ward (Robin from the 1960's Batman show). He was 30 when he started on TV - not sure why that is "sad". That was young to have a talk show in 1993, especially when he had no real performance experience before. I know talk shows are a dime a dozen now, but they weren't back then. You should watch the video of his 2000 Harvard speech where he talks about his early career and struggles, including getting laid off from his first writing gig at Not Necessarily the News. He then worked at SNL (he got into a few sketches in small parts), wrote an amazing pilot with Robert Smigel called Lookwell (it's on UA-cam - it's awesome) and then wrote on the Simpsons. If you listen to the audio commentaries on the Simpsons episodes for which he wrote, you'll hear the other writers talk about how funny he was and how he was always performing for the room, so he was destined for his own show.
