Some folks get so worked up about the term. I remember during my first year here one much older Aussie guy yelled at a bunch of girls who simply commented that there was a group of gaijin, which we were! It messed up my image of the terms for a while, but I wasn't really comfortable with him causing a public scene about it. Surely that's more negative... Anyway, I like how you put it, and explained it 💯💯

This isnt quite the same thing, But in New Zealand Maori people call White New Zealanders Pakeha, Which has basically the same meaning as Gaijin, Outside person. Maori and most of the media and government call all White New Zealanders this but interestingly never any other non-Maori race, Eg: Chinese New Zealanders are not Pakeha / Outside people. Sometimes its intended to be offensive, As if to say you dont belong. But often people are just using it because the world has evolved beyond its original meaning.
