Based on the # 1 New York Times bestseller “A Man Called Ove,” A Man Called Otto tells the story of Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), a grump who no longer sees purpose in his life following the loss of his wife. Otto is ready to end it all, but his plans are interrupted when a lively young family moves in next door, and he meets his match in quick-witted Marisol. She challenges him to see life differently, leading to an unlikely friendship that turns his world around. A heartwarming and funny story about love, loss, and life, A Man Called Otto shows that family can sometimes be found in the most unexpected places.
Directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland), A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks (Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Cast Away), Mariana Treviño (Club the Cuervos), Rachel Keller (Fargo) and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Magnificent Seven). The screenplay is written by Academy Award® nominee David Magee (Best Adapted Screenplay, Life of Pi, 2012; Best Adapted Screenplay, Finding Neverland, 2004) based upon the best-selling novel “A Man Called Ove” by Fredrik Backman, and the film A Man Called Ove by Hannes Holm. The film is being produced by Fredrik Wikström Nicastro, Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman.

My wife and I were in Pittsburgh for an appointment, arrived way too early so we went for a walk. We saw a film crew setting up, they had streets blocked off, so for curiosities sake we stood by and watched for a moment. Out of nowhere, Tom Hanks walked right up to my wife and I... even though he was wearing a face mask he was instantly recognizable and as he approached my wife said "OMG it's Tom Hanks"!!! Mr Hanks pretended to look about frantically and said "REALLY? WHERE????!!!" and we laughed. He stood and talked to us, took a photo with us, and was so kind. Anyway, he did that because we were in an area where we weren't supposed to be, and someone on the film crew was about to come over and yell at us and Tom Hanks scolded the person and decided to just come over and talk to us, rather than someone yelling at us. We had no idea what actor was there or even why the camera's were being set up, we were just people going for a walk. Thank you Mr Hanks for making our day that day, and for your overwhelming kindness!

My favorite time was when some guy drank too much and passed out on the bar with his cellphone on the counter. Tom Hanks picked up the guys cellphone and took a bunch of selfies with him and the passed out guy. It was hysterical 🤣.

Just saw this. This movie delivers a very strong message about how we should cherish our memories and live a full life at the same time, no matter the age. Don't get trapped in the past, it becomes a burden too heavy to carry.

I read A Man Called Ove when i went to rehabilitation for alcoholism. I don't think I ever appreciated how much joy and love there is in this world outside of my negative, depressing, loveless ways of thinking about the world around me. 60 days of being internal with no tv, cell phone, or news, just books. And Ove, well, he changed my life. I always imagined Robert Dinero or Tom Hanks playing Ove in my head. I literally just thought about the book looking back just now and to my surprise a movie is coming out this soon. Unreal. Although I am sober right now there are times where i start with that negative thinking and i remind myself all the love i would lose if i drank again. Thank you to the original Author of a Man Called Ove, thank you to T.Hanks and his crew for making this movie , and to the makers of the original swedish version (which i didn't even know or thought it would exist until now).
Here's to being sober. And to all of you struggling out there with addiction, remember to never say never, just say for now, the next 5 minuts, next 5 days. Just never say never and BREATHE. Your family loves you, your kids love you, and even without that know that, not just God, but YOU Love YOU.

For those who are "struggling" with addiction, STOP struggling! The basis for getting and staying sober is to "SURRENDER". Without surrender, there will be no willingness to "live differently". I have taken the words "struggle", "battle", and "fight" out of my vocabulary and thinking. My mantra is, "Live in the problem, or live in the solution. I know what I'm talking about. 5/8/1994

I loved that the protagonist grew and started to heal with the help of platonic friends (particularly Marisol's family) and neighbors and not with the help of a romantic interest. We need more movies like this. It was absolutely the best one I've seen in a while. So many amazing messages and it was just absolutely touching. There are many people struggling just like Otto, and sometimes with a little compassion, love, patience and a dash of humor we may just be able to be a "Marisol" to someone or an "Otto" to someone like Malcolm and vice versa or really any of the amazing characters in this film that loved one another (particularly Otto) when they most needed it and help them through the darkness to the light.

I’m 28 and lost my dad suddenly to a stroke almost 5 years ago. My family blew apart at the seems and I moved home from college thinking we would grieve together, but have been the only person living in the house we all grew up in since, which is like living in a loop of both what was and what you wish still was, the most
Not too proud to say life’s been a mess: I have been so lonely, angry and shut out from the world since he’s been gone that I am quite indeed a young Otto… but I almost felt like my dad was talking to me through the movie telling me that it’s okay to keep living without him. I broke down multiple times and that’s something I haven’t let myself do enough. Thank you Tom Hanks ❤️

I was inconsolable for a whole year. I hated the world. I couldn’t understand how people could laugh or smile at anything. I hated them for it. Severe grief and depression is a terrible affliction. Time has slowly helped and I can look at his photos now with a smile. Each day at a time bro. Love.

This film really opened up my way of understanding senior citizens and moved my heart to become a personality like Marisol, as I am a 19-year-old human being who has never acknowledged senior citizens like Otto himself. so yeah... this is a movie you must see once in your lifetime .

Such a good movie about learning to live again after loss and letting go when it’s time. Beautiful depiction of the cycle of life & importance of community. highly recommend! I thought the ending was poetic, beautiful, and real. Not dark. Great movie if you’re not afraid to feel the full range of emotions, I laughed and cried throughout it. It touches on difficult subjects but brings life and hope to them. It also brings awareness to things seniors have to deal with.

As someone who has just seen it this past weekend, I have to be honest when I say this was the most aspiring film I’ve seen in my whole entire life.Even more than one of Hanks’s famous roles as Forrest in Forrest Gump, this film will bring out every single emotion that any true human being has. Not only the writer and the director do I applaud, but every single actor and actress in this movie played their specific roles better than I have ever seen in a single movie. It truly is astounding, and as a young man who embellishes and loves movies and has been intrigued to them for a long time with my girlfriend, I give my honest word that this is in no doubt too 5 films I have ever seen. Warning, it’s not for the faint hearted and if you are, please take full note of the movie and realize there is so much love to be found. God bless you all

i felt Otto's sadness right from the start of the film. I knew what's going on on his head. The kindness of his old and new neighbor/friends to him, his subconscious gesture to take initiative of giving a hand when needed, plus the comfort of having a pet to keep you company, and the reality of life of old people--everything on this film was painfully beautiful and i cried my heart out. This made its mark on my heart already. Such a gem i found. I thank the author of this novel btw.

A fellow Otto living in the US here. My heart skipped a beat when he had to spell his name for the little girl. I have to spell my name regularly when people give me a blank look after I introduce myself.
If I pronounce the "t"-s, many people think my name is "Octo". If I pronounce it with an American accent as Tom Hanks did in the trailed with a "d", many think it's "Auto". I can't win. Sometimes I just tell them my name is Arnold.
I sincerely think this movie will change my life, and I can re-claim my own name! I cannot wait to watch it...😍
My Dad was born in 1940 as the tenth child in a poor family in rural Hungary. That time Hungary was on Germany's side in WW2, and had big hopes in getting their lost territories back. This is why he was given a German name, which became my own name as his firstborn and why I became known as Arnold in Starbucks.

Actually my wife and I recently looked into the cinema programme and decided there was nothing that really tickled our fancy. However, a few days ago, the evening before a holiday we decided on a little date night and just went for A Man Called Otto, which in my mind is a beautiful piece of film! I didn't even watch the trailer beforehand, so except the few bits of info my wife fed me, I wasn't really sure what we were getting into. I think I can confidently say that I have never cried this much during a film. From the reveal of what happened to the wife and the baby over to Otto becoming a sort of grandpa to Marisol's kids just took me on an emotional rollercoaster. I envisioned becoming a father one day, making my dad a grandpa, which I know he'd love and be awesome at. Those were the tears of excitement and joy. At the same time, I remembered my own grandpa who passed over 16 years ago and I am still very sad sometimes that he isn't around anymore. Furthermore, my wife and I have not even been married for a full year and known each other for just over five but the film made me go through all the memories we've made so far, making me even more thankful for her being with me, me not being alone and having someone by my side to love and cherrish the time together. This made me feel positive about the future and what is to come for us.
I will probably carry the memories from this one forward for a long time. It has a special place in my heart.
Thank you, Mr. Tom Hanks for playing this character in such a great way and thank you to the entire cast and crew for making such a wonderful piece of film. In my opinion this one deserves a few awards! Greetings and lots of love from Berlin, Germany.

Tom Hanks nails it again! Great movie. It has been such a joy to have been able to see this great actor's evolution as we grow old together. His son plays a younger him.

Can't wait for this, not many people know this, but A Man called Ove was originally a series of blog posts by Fredrik Backman before he became a famous author, the blogs about Ove were very popular in Sweden long before I think even Fredrik was thinking about making it into a book.
We all have a piece of Ove within us and I think that's what makes him such a relatable character, the book and the movie is so heartfelt you'd have to be dead inside not to feel it....the trailer looks awesome, Tom Hanks is perfect for this role.

Oh, I didn't know the development of the book, thanks for sharing. Your observation is correct about Ove being relatable. It is sad that with the family structure forever changing, some people will be isolated. But, that doesn't mean that we can't become part of our neighbourhood, and local community. The thing is to be engaged with whoever is around you; it is so easy to hibernate.

When were the blog posts written? In Finland, there's Tuomas Kyrö, who wrote about a grumpy old man, starting in 2010 in a series of articles, later a super popular novel. I'm afraid this Finnish guy might have copied that Swedish guy. Like I said, it became a phenomenon in Finland. If it was a copy, I hope Kyrö will get exposed.:) Is the 'Ove' novel popular in Sweden?

@@Stasis153 I believe Backman started his blog around the same time 2010 or thereabouts. Yes Backman has been very popular in Sweden even when he was "Just" a blogger and his books are widely popular here

That's interesting. Thanks. I haven't seen the Swedish or this version of the movie or read the novel, so I don't really know whether there's that much similarities or not. Kyrö's guy is just a person who is angry at everything modern. But still... same time, and almost same place. Sounds suspicious to me.

The irony in this movie is that no matter the attempts, it was hard for him to die, but when he decided he wanted to live it was harder for him to stay alive. Words can't describe how great of a film this is...

I actually saw this tonight, I always go each weekend to watch movies but this was the first one in a while which made me cry, it was a great watch and a lot of emotion behind it. In 2022 I lost my Oma, my uncle, my friend and family friends 6 in the one year was hard and this film brought back a lot of those memories plus ones I have lost over the years. Definitely a touching movie I wasn't sure what to expect at first but definitely a emotional roller coaster.

My brother passed away a year and a half ago. He was 33 and I’m only a year older than him. It was devastating to say the least. There was a life before my brother and a life after. Just like Otto I’ve been living angry with no sense of reality in a way. It is hard to hear people say that my brother would want me to live life idk, I feel like I’m disappointing him in a way. 😢
I haven’t cried this much watching a movie specially thinking of my little brother. The movie has a wonderful but powerful message that I’m trying to grasp onto.

I just watched Otto. It’s a real tear jerker, especially the ending…but I’m a crier😢. I loved Truman Hanks, he was wonderful, a real natural. The moment he started talking I thought hmmm? But I knew for sure the moment he started running Thats Tom’s son. His new neighbor Marisol was fantastic! I loved her 2-seconds in, I wanted to hug by the end of the movie. Beautiful film…Congratulations Tom & Rita. ✌️💞🌷

We have Tom Hanks as Ove or Otto, the American version, but I have to say - it has that very Hollywood feel to it, like the whole flow of the story of how comedic it is very American..

Be ready for either delightment or disappointment, because you know how reliable Hollywood is when it comes to making movies based on and inspired by foreign ones.
Since it's Hanks, I have hopes, but I am also bracing myself for the possibility of bad directing.
I'm sure that I will like whatever Hanks does in this movie.
