@@xpg2124 As a Terminator stores immense amounts of information, the chance is high that even if he destroyed the hourglass, destroyed all of the realm, once he returned back and would be examined by Skynet, Skynet could build a new hourglass in mere decades.
So even if The Terminator destroys the original, skynet, and anyone getting access to his memory, could rebuild it. The only way to be safe that noone, ever, gets access, is to eliminate all knowledge about it. So if he returned to this "bright and wonderful future", via Time Displacement, he might be probed, and all the information he had stored, would lead to the future taking the turn again, where machines, and humans alike, think that "they should be better", and Skynet would begin waging war, or the humans would.
Its really a complicated matter, and most likely the devs and writers of MK11 did not think that far, and complicated. They only followed the "Terminator 2" Plot Idea, where T800 has to destroy himself to prevent Skynets creation, or at least hoping to do so.

I mean, sure, only after trying every possible solution to eliminate humanity and realizing it can't be done.

The fact that the sinking animation doesn't finish with the Terminator giving a thumbs up is a massive missed opportunity.

Well... Genisys could have been a legit ending if they hadn't shown the end credits scene. They could have just left it, but they were pretty confident.
Dark Fates did a pretty good job, but then made a whole other machine overlord be the main bad guy to try and build a new franchise.

@Uncle Crispy Honestly, T2 pretty much was a perfect ending that resolved everything and wrapped it up in a nice neat little bow. It's why every Terminator film since has either been mediocre or outright trash.

Bugeye0704 It sounds good, but I’ve seen the movies way too many times to remember this. In T2, when the T-800 terminated the T-1000 and after they destroy the arm and chip of the original T-101, it hands Sarah Connor the remote to drop him into the molten steel so the last chip could be destroyed. The reason why it handed the remote to Sarah and why this ending seems weird is because the Terminator cannot self-terminate, meaning it can’t kill itself. But before people say “But he’s not really dead, he just walked in and sank,” even if the Sea of Blood is bottomless, there would be pressure that could crumple him up into a ball. I know this seems a little excessive, but still my point is that The Terminator cannot kill himself, but he CAN have others kill him.

TopDoom Slayer since the terminator is a self learning machine, after watching every single timeline, it probably had to enough time to realise how to reprogram itself (since t-800’s are easily reprogrammable) and remove that feature. That or lazy writing.

You have to remember machines/robots are programmed to achieve the mission or objective at the most effective and efficient way possible. If it can adapt, then it will; otherwise it is stuck in that loop as shown and chose the best path to end the war as part of that directive

This ending actually reminds me of the T-infinity in the Terminator canon. T-infinity is a very advanced unit built by skynet in the far future. It exists independent of time and is responsible for keeping the timeline consistent
See thats a good way to tie up the loose end of a one off DLC character, his ending explains why he wont be in future games and why no one brings him up
Plus it also fits into the established personality of the character pretty decently and references something they're known for.

@@wildmandann Although Jax's ending still does good when all is said and done, remember, Jax's wish was inherently a selfish one. The Terminator sought what was objectively better not only for the machines, but mankind as well.
It's not the results people complain, it's the intention. Jax made his decision fueled by feelings, while the Terminator made its fueled by logic.
My only problem with Jax's ending Is that I cringed so hard when he said "woke".
For a killing machine he was in the end human. A very noble ending; he gave humanity a chance for a better future.

There is a science-fiction book along these lines. A man has to potions, the first will kill him, the other will make it where he can never die. He is flung into space with no hope but to endlessly drift about and decides to drink the potion that will end his life. Once he drinks the potions, to his dismay, he realizes he made an error and drank the potion of ever lasting life. He is to drift in space endlessly with no hope to be found or for escape.
Pretty sure he would actually die.
Even if he did die his memories could still be recovered because he's a machine.
So this was the only way.

@@harryunderwood9387 It's a machine with the directive to ensure Skynet's survival, trust isn't a part of the equation. As the ending shows it'll do what is necessary to ensure the completion of its goal, even if it may run contrary to what its creator thinks it should do.

This animation reminds me of the whole Twisted Metal series and how they would tell stories. I enjoyed that quite a bit!
This ending absolutely blew my mind. I was so caught up in the idea that Skynet wanted to kill humans that I forgot why it was doing so. Observing cold logic creating a solution to a conflict started by cold logic just blows my moral preconceptions of Terminator right out of the water! (In short, this was absolutely amazing!)
Skynet was ment to help people, but then it gained sentience and deemed humanity a threat to it's existence.
