  • In this video we visit Lancashire to look at the remains of the 18th Century Hollinshead Hall house and its well house. We start at the Roddlesworth Waterfall. Hollinshead hall house was a country house built in 1776. It was the country manor of John Hollinshead. The house was demolished in the early 1900's and all that remains are ruins. In the grounds of the old house is the complete and renovated Hollinshead hall well house. The well house is a charming grotto constructed in the early 19th century so that pilgrims could take the healing spring water that flowed hear. Initially lauded by Pagans the spring water was later Christian. The spring water or Holy well is said to have healing properties. The properties are said to cure conditions of the eye. Finally in this historical tour of Lancashire we visit Liverpool castle. Liverpool castle was built by Lord Leverhulme. William Hesketh Lever. The Edwardian Industrialist and philanthropist. Liverpool castle is situated at Rivington just outside Bolton. It was a folly built as a replica of the original Liverpool castle that stood in Liverpool. This video includes drone and aerial footage of Lancashire.

I moved away from Manchester as a child and moved to the Midlands, which is where I've grown up. That said, I still have family in and around Manchester and your videos have taught me so much about a place that was once home. Thank you and I appreciate the effort you go to get the best content for your viewers.

Great video Martin. Lovely barrel vaulted ceiling and diminishing coursed roof. Water gardens & Grottos were very fashionable things to have for the rich and famous in the early 1800s....

"fake castle ruins" - That is impressive to see someone actually build modern ruins.
Myself living about 2 hours from Biltmore Estate, I can attest to the surprise when you think you are looking at something centuries old but then realize it was built in the 1880s with running water and electricity.
Thanks for showing these. Greatly appreciated.

I know where you are! We went camping once at Belmont reservoir and a water board warden moved us on but said try around the castle which we did and a t 6 o'clock in the morning there was noise coming from the field we were camping in - there was a chap with a full drum kit giving it what for - it turned out his partner didn't like the noise either and so he came out to this spot on a regular basis - hey ho Stay Safe

Well that stirred up some memories!
Back in the 70's we would bike it up there from Swinton. Of course we never realized the castle was a folly. Back then you would never have got to the end of that narrow passage! We used to go for a swim in the pond in the gardens near the tower, then bike it back home. Kids nowadays do not know they are born!
Tockholes was a spiritual center founded after the ravages of WW1 .... before the diagnosis of Shell Shock!
As per usual another Cracking Video!

This has been a wonderful look at forgotten relics, that castle is one heck of a folly! It certainly isn't medieval as no one cut stones like that before the advent of stone saws, it would have been built using rough cut stones. I wonder what history was flooded when they built that reservoir? Most often they tear down buildings and cut all the trees down to make a clean bottom wiping out all previous artifacts of the people who once lived there. The first film of the forerunner of Time Team was done digging a village that was due to be flooded. Mike Aston said too often local history gets wiped out for the sake of modern improvements and people soon forget what was there before the valley was flooded.

Between the front door and the two pillars you liked. I wonder if folk were encouraged to sit there, waiting there turn to go inside and get their eyes seen to? Thank god we've can go to Specsavers these days !!! The slow-motion of the falls at the beginning was fantastic as it caught the rain falling too...brilliant effect. Thank you, very nice video. The well house was charming, so nice it has been cared for, if only people would respect these places then they wouldnt need locking up. 🇬🇧

Rivington is just up the road from me and spent many a day there, a lot of work has been carried out recently (pre Covid) on renovating the Japanese gardens and surrounding paths. Another great video mate.

Great video Martin. I did notice how footage from the old Well House gave an ethereal presence as you entered.

Fascinating places. Might be worth going back during summer for a different perspective. The mud reminds me a little of the farms where I grew up.

I was totally thinking "that's good walling stone" before you said about the Farmers recycling it.

Brilliant video mate Liverpool Castle dumbfounded me many years ago until the internet put me right on its history.
Love the well-house it’s beautiful. I have a degenerative eye condition and could probably do with a few swalleys of that water. 😎
Keep up the great work my friend 👍
