The newest video in my editor reacts to series. This week I'm watching and reacting to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time.
Buffy has a powerful new weapon, but the gang cannot find any information about the origins of the mysterious scythe. Eventually the Slayer goes herself in search of knowledge, and finds a new ally, an old friend, and great danger.

A young woman, destined to slay vampires, demons and other infernal creatures, deals with her life fighting evil, with the help of her friends.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an American supernatural drama television series based on the 1992 film of the same name. It was created by Joss Whedon under his production tag, Mutant Enemy Productions, with later co-executive producers being Jane Espenson, David Fury, David Greenwalt, Doug Petrie, Marti Noxon, and David Solomon.
The series narrative follows Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a line of young women known as "Vampire Slayers", or simply "Slayers". In the story, Slayers, or the "Chosen Ones", are chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. Buffy wants to live a normal life, but as the series progresses, she learns to embrace her destiny. Like previous Slayers, Buffy is aided by a Watcher, who guides, teaches and trains her. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy surrounds herself with a circle of loyal friends who become known as the "Scooby Gang" - a reference to the animated franchise Scooby-Doo that features a group of friends solving mysteries together.

I love that you completely missed David Boreanaz's name in the opening credits so his appearance was a complete surprise. Also, fans of Buffy were geeking out hard about the scythe Buffy finds. Joss Whedon created a comic called Fray, which featured a future slayer, and she had the scythe. It was released in June 2001, after Buffy season 5. Seeing the scythe in Buffy was a massive deal.

Dismemberment alone is traumatic enough. I'm the most mad at Anya for her part in it, tbh. I never really forgave her for that. And it makes me unappreciative of her discussion with Andrew about staying to fight the apocalypse this time around. I'd rather see her skip town again bc her character can't seem to decide if she's selfless or selfish and she started getting on my nerves.

Nathan Fillion did such a great job being creepy Caleb. I thought it was so great to have the three leads of Whedon's biggest shows in the same scene. After you watch the last episode of Buffy and s.5 of Angel, it doesn't have to end. That's when you rewatch the first episode of Buffy and go "aaaaw" and remember what they all went through and you get a little tear in your eye. ^_^

@@Nicamon It's actually quite a nice test of reasoning. Just because she turned out to be right _after the fact_ absolutely doesn't excuse her actions at the time because we have to judge decisions based on what was known _when they were made_ NOT what turned out to be the case later, with 20/20 hindsight (and no small amount of luck - for instance Buffy had no idea they were hiding a magical superweapon, if it turned out to be a Wicca thing or needed activating in some specific way, she's likely dead here).
This isn't Buffy turning out to have been right all along, this is Buffy learning a lesson, adapting her tactics and riding her luck to _become_ right. That's actually more laudable i'd say because what makes a great leader _isn't_ always being right, it's how they respond to being wrong - if the show's point was just "She was right, they were wrong, Buffy is perfect" then that would be _so_ much duller and less nuanced IMO.

Something interesting about the "axe" is that its first appearance wasn't in the TV show. It first appeared in an eight issue comic series called "Fray" that was written by Joss Whedon. "Fray" told the story of a slayer hundreds of years in the future and had a sort of "cyberpunk meets Buffy" vibe to it. It ran concurrently with season seven of Buffy. The titular character of "Fray" wielded the axe, which she called a scythe, and it was called a traditional weapon of the slayers which was "lost for a time".

  • @dayceem

I think when Amanda says 'We got punished' it implies regret that the potentials did not follow Buffy in the first place, kicked her out, and put their 'faith' in the wrong slayer. They could recognize Buffy's renewed resolve gained after her night with Spike and now that she has the scythe, so the switching back and forth between slayers is not out of left field.

  • @anonymes2884
    @anonymes2884 11 місяців тому +6

Oh and the scythe is "singing" BTW - making some kind of ethereal sound (sometimes only when wielded by the righteous) is a pretty common feature of legendary blades from myth and literature around the world (crops up in Norse and Celtic legends among others).

    • @shaynaformity1384
      @shaynaformity1384 11 місяців тому +1

I've used a real scythe to cut grass - they really do sound like they're singing when the blade is empty on the backstroke. It's easy to extrapolate that a sword would make a similar sound moving through the air. But Buffy's weapon is shaped more like an axe, without a long metal blade. Hooray for fiction! Archeologists have actually discovered real singing swords called Ulfbehrt blades that were used by Vikings and Franks. If you're interested in learning more, google singing swords ulfberht blades from Germany.

Buffy is an excellent fighter and very agile.
While he’s got The Scythe he uses it clumsily and relies on fisticuffs. He was bound to fail.

It was interesting for me to see if the last scene would work for you or not and what will be your reaction. They said that this scene was made just for angel shippers like the last gesture to the ship in buffy TV series. Since they were vocal (and there weren't many of them they said) but they were asking for smth at that time, and this piece of pie was given to them. That's also why this conflicts with the rest of the main plot at the end, with what we saw in previous ep and especially how funny it looks like when after that Buffy says that it was 'just a hello' and asks to continue sleeping with Spike. As if nothing happened. Maybe it means that nothing really happened then. Anyway this whole thing looked bizarre. And especially that she will say 'the words' to Spike after that at the very end.
Such conflicting things happen when the author wants to please everyone at the same time, but this doesn't work like that actually. You can't please everyone. You have to choose.

Once again - careless sloppy writing. Season 7 really suffers from this. Things aren’t acknowledged or addressed or concluded in a natural or organic way.
It feels forced, it feels contrived. It doesn’t feel like the final season of a fantastic character-driven saga. I don’t know what the accurate term is for it. Half-baked? Like Buffy’s terrible cookie analogy.

Big hint that the show is telling us Buffy has returned to the right path after making some mistakes ? She's accompanied by the "Chosen" theme again (season 7's "hero theme" and one of the best pieces of film/TV score ever written IMO - and i'm saying that in a universe that contains John Williams :).
(plus she's making with the jokes again, carrying the heavy things lightly)
Also, for all his many faults, we are reminded that Xander Harris is bordering on _crazy_ brave.
(also also, was that Andrew doing the frikkin' _Xena_ battle cry ? How could I have forgotten that among _many_ nods and references, BtVS acknowledged Xena walked so Buffy could run ?)

Xander and others dont' apologize .Ok, but some friendship dont need words for that, after all this time. We've seen this type of scene before and they know they messed up with Buffy. She knows that they feel guilty just as she feels guilty for the debacle at the vineyard just before, for Xander's gouged out eye, for the deaths of Molly and Dianne, Rona's broken arm and everyone's trauma. Buffy didn't apologize either. But that's not the important thing. The important thing is the mission. Great reaction, like always !!

The reason that we didn’t see a big reconciliation scene is that they’re at war. Faith was out of commission, the Potentials were about to die, and Buffy showed up and took command. That’s what happens in battle. Once she took command and demonstrated the new weapon, the girls had new hope and finally realized their mistake.
There will be time to talk things through later; for now, they need to tend to their wounded, bury the dead and prepare for the final battle.
The other practical reason is that they just had too many storylines, character arcs, and the entire series to wrap up in only a four-episode block.
It was more important to introduce the Slayer Scythe; hint at Willow’s part in the finale; finish developing Andrew; set up the Xander/Dawn storyline; resolve Faith and Buffy’s relationship; and come to some understanding between Buffy and Spike.
That’s a lot for one episode where “nothing happened.” 😊

On October 12, an audio drama is set to be released on Audible. Anthony Stewart Head, Nicholas Brendon, Charisma Carpenter, and James Marsters are reprising their roles. It's set in an alternate reality where Cordillia is the Slayer. I believe the script was co-written by Amber Benson. Joss Whedon isn't involved for certain reasons.

This is a theory I don't think about as much as others because there still aren't as many reaction viewers who don't make it here as opposed to the first four or five seasons. That's slowly changing, though. I think. I'm still refining this to the point where its cohsive (that will take years).
I like that Xander shows character growth in only saying and not yelling at her, but say how wonderful she is three episodes ago, helping the group [and allow himself to be used as the "reasonable justification" (🙄]) to do the first's bidding in kicking Buffy out two episodes ago, before saying in this episode "I thought I'd be with you until the end" and be upset that Buffy's giving him the job of watching over Dawn instead of being in the fight shows that the issues of attacking Buffy when things don't go the Scoobies way, and not dealing with the fallout afterwards are still a part of Xander's phyche. I get the issue and I love that he doesn't yell at Buffy like he used to in high school, but I also think that when it comes to his issues, it show more a lateral movement for me on the issues he's not dealing with and never has dealt with more than it does character growth overall.
I'm not railing against Xander's actions in the arc of the few episodes I've brought up. I'm pointing out the flaw in what he said in this episode in comparison to what he's said and done in the previous episode's. He cannot be with Buffy until the end if she is alone after being kicked out, and he cannot praise her to the best any character ever has, and then agree that kicking her out is an option and still think he had a chance of being with her to the end. If he wanted to be with her to the end and still disagree about not going to the vineyard, following someone else while not following Buffy (without kicking her out) was the only possible solution. No one in the group considered that kicking Buffy out was something The First would praise, though. “Be with her until the end” doesn’t negate disagreeing with Buffy, but kicking Buffy out does negate being with her until the end. How Xander disagree's with Buffy is what shows how he's grown up. But he still has a long way in dealing with his own personal issues, though. And kicking Buffy out was another moment in a long line of deflecting those issues. The only people who apologize for kicking Buffy out are Faith (before Buffy left) Kennedy, Amanda, and Vi. Thus my lateral movement reference.
I love that Amanda, Vi, and Kennedy apologize to Buffy. They don't say the actual words, but it's an apology on their part. I don't like that the best the core Scoobies can do is look down when Buffy calls out how bad everyone is (including herself) at communication skills. I don't hate on Kennedy like I see much of the fanbase doing. The fact that she apologizes to Buffy in this episode and calls herself a brat is more than most characters can say in terms of character progress. Plus, most reasons I see for Kennedy's dislike are reasons to dislike Rona over Kennedy. Her doing the "why are we fighting we're all going to die anyway" gets on my nerves more than anything Kennedy ever does. At least in my opinion. But, I know that is not a popular opinion.
Whether you side with Buffy or The Scoobies, The First is winning from the moment the group argues until Buffy saves everyone post-bomb. Which is why I am pro-Faith in apologizing to Buffy. She doesn't need to say the words to try to persuade Buffy to stay. Saying what she does say, is enough to show that she is taking command against a nearly sinking ship. And Buffy handing her the reins shows she knows that was going to happen if she continued arguing and didn't let herself be kicked out and replaced. This is why The First showed up as The Mayor telling Faith she was smart "to kick [Buffy] out." Buffy despite knowing this is in an emotionally bad place, as she always is after the Scoobies gang up on her, and Faith is now in charge and as she says to Buffy in this episode that she now understands Buffy's side of slaying.
Even after the bomb, the Scoobies don't really understand what Buffy and Faith talk about. Being the leader is akain to a General and knowing saving everyone isn't possible. Studying the bigger picture and hoping for as few casualties as possible is the best you can do. The group has been through apocalypses. But there is a difference between those and war. This has been war since Buffy was ressureccted. The first only just showed it's hand at the beginning of the season. The most losses the group suffered so far, was during the time they had kicked Buffy out (the bomb) because they didn't realize they were in the middle of being agents of The First when Buffy was kicked out. The only difference between Buffy and Dumbledore is Dumbledore seems wiser due to how old her is and only has people question him post death where as Buffy has people question her to her face and she has to pick herself up emotionally where as Dumbledore always seemed to never emotionally fall apart (although I personally think he did).I love that Faith is understanding for the first time what Buffy had been trying to teach her in S3 exept now it has to be more than that because war is different than apocalypses and being the general of a small army is different than leading a Scooby Gang. But either way, no one in the Scoobies have ever understood or will ever understand, even when they think they do. That is why they have always gone up against Buffy when things go wrong. It's why Xander disagreeing with her means he didn't the bigger picture on her side or that he had been a part of the bad guy's plan by kicking Buffy out.
The theory's still not cohesive in the way I like it, but I feel it's better than it was in its cohesiveness than when I came up with it years ago.

    • @miaamer7718

I only partially agree here. I think the only reason Xander didn’t yell at her is because he was on pain meds, Because even in the continuation comics he not only yells at her, he actively and of his own volition goes to the people who want to kill Buffy and spills the beans on where they can find the thing to help them kill her, and her motives. He very very very nearly got her killed.

I will tell you why I will be a Spike girl always and its really simple; Angel only loves Buffy because he was cursed with a soul. When he was evil his love and care for her went away and changed to hatred and evil and only after he got cursed again did it return. Spike loved Buffy BEFORE he got his soul back. Spike, even while evil, could not hurt Buffy and ended fighting for her and attempted to "do good" because of his love for her. Spike's soul was not a curse - he sought it out, FOR HER. To be the man she wanted and needed because of his love fore her. He suffered to the extreme - FOR HER and for her to love him back. Angle had to be cursed in order to love her and be a good man, he didnt seek it out nor want it when he was evil. Spike didnt have to be cursed. He did it willingly, FOR HER. Only half of Angel loves Buffy, his good half. ALL of Spike loves Buffy, bad and good. To me, Angel is pretty pathetic. His love is not "unconditional". Spikes is.

Are you forgetting Spike tried to kill Buffy and her friends? That his 'love' in season 5 was basically obsession, stalking, trespassing, stealing her underwear, kidnapper, tied her up and almost got her and dawn killed. Coercing Buffy into degrading public sex countless of times, taking advantage of her depression to isolate her and use her further for his unhealthy fetishes, ultimately resulting in his disgusting SA attempt that left her bruised on the floor of her own home. I still cannot get people who romanticize this its so problematic.

Ah but Harris. That’s not what you do. That’s what Rosenberg does. What you do is much healthier.
You use your heart. You console. You comfort. You care. You don’t manipulate and control through power. Isn’t it sad how this guy always paints himself as the useless one because he has no power, yet he is responsible for some of the power moves in the show. So he makes jokes to compensate for his shitty feelings. So what? Lots of people use humour to cope. Why it’s made out as a bad thing that he makes jokes at inappropriate times is something I don’t understand. I find that is a much healthier coping mechanism than altering everything to be your way.
The differences between Willow and Xander’s ways of “dealing” are striking. As Buffy’s two bestest friends, one with supernatural power. One without. It is definitely Xander that has the healthier way to deal. I think what makes it not seem that way though is because Xander often fails in his attempts to deal while Willow is mostly successful in escaping dealing. And so it’s often Xander that gets all the slander… when really the one who deserves it is Willow because controlling the situation, the environment or the person is not dealing with it or helping it. It’s manipulating it. It’s altering it. And escaping the difficulties and consequences in the meanwhile. Using humour however has no risk and causes no damage. It can just come across as annoying or frustrating. But people would much rather be mad over a few poorly thought out jokes at inappropriate times and places than actual chaos and destruction of time and place. Having power to work your will is not always a good thing. And that is illustrated brilliantly through Willow. And it figures Xander would be the one to stop her.
Xander is not the bad guy. If he was - he’d do a piss poor job at being it because the only area he is a failure in is with control. He is useless there. But like I said - that’s not what he does. That’s what Willow does. And it’s made extremely clear in this show that that is not a good way to deal. To that I say - I’ll take the jokes any day.

Honestly... I kinda hate Spike's romantic speech, because when he says he's never been close to anyone, it cheapens his one century relationship with Dru and I call bs on that. "He had no soul, so it wasn’t real love", "it was more of an obsession". I know that's how a large portion of the audience stands on this, but I disagree, I don't think it was just obsession, just lust, or a shallow thing, an imitation of feeling. It might have been a sick, twisted, gothic love, but it was presented as the real deal in season 2, at least on Spike's end, and it was that peculiarity amongst vampires that made Spike and Dru so interesting.

A great opening scene with Caleb showing his fear now Buffy has freed mʔ from the rock. Buffy of course has to save The Potentials from certain death and dispatches The Turok Han with ease now as she now has the power of mʔ . Again when Spike returns we can see something is different between Buffy and Spike by the look in their eyes, the whole dynamic is now on another level, they both know that last night was special and has given Buffy the strength to fight on. Spike having his soul restored has of changed everything for the dynamic between him and Buffy. You can see in that conversation that there something is definitely there, and the Spike in Seeing Red is not the Spike in Chosen. Again how can Faith who with a soul, actually sexually assaulted and tried to murder Xander, and actually technically raped Riley in season 4, and committed cold blooded murder be treated differently from Spike by many fans. We realise that Xander was just doing what Buffy asked him when capturing Dawn and driving her to safety, but Dawn turns the tables zapping Xander and returns. A superb final scene with Angel returning to aid Buffy, but as Buffy and Angel kiss after Caleb has apparently been dispatched, it pans away to a very jealous Spike being tormented again this time by The First Evil as Buffy saying 'look at that bitch' a brilliant final scene to the episode. Enjoy the last episode CHOSEN you won't be disappointed, but many fans still feel the show reached a zenith in Series 5 finale THE GIFT.

Instead now Buffy’s just back and is their leader again because … she has to be since Faith is just chilling in a bed because she got injured and is also feeling bad for leading the girls into a trap. It’s like… I don’t understand. It doesn’t really make sense. Like… I don’t like this storyline. It’s just so unnecessary in a sense. Well, maybe it could have been good but I just don’t think they executed it very well. I just don’t think they should have left it to the very last minute to do it. And they also should have then - if they had done it - addressed it instead of just not talk about it at all.”
Absolutely agree. And it’s not just ‘Empty Places’, although that is the worst example of it. The main problem with Season 7 is that they set up character arcs and narratives and themes only to just drop them and do something else or ignore them completely. Five By Five Takes gave the analogy of buying an IKEA desk and instead of constructing the parts in the proper and most logical way, just dump them on the floor and leave what you’re supposed to get from it a huge mess. Don’t even bother picking them up, let alone actually building the damn desk.
Season 7 is exactly like that. There’s no proper narrative undertaking for any set up they have - it’s all just left there. They have great ideas and honestly some great starter episodes and setups for everything… I mean ‘Lessons’, ‘Beneath You’, ‘Conversations With Dead People’, ‘Help’, ‘Selfless’, ‘Same Time, Same Place’… are fantastic episodes that don’t really suffer from the careless sloppy writing of the later episodes and a weighty main plot that’s that badly executed that it buckles under its own weight. It’s a massive inconsistent mess what they do with the latter half of the season. And they just neglect to properly use all of what was set up in the former half for this messy ass main plot with characters no one even cares about nor would be able to get any satisfying character representation or development so that we can learn to care about them because it’s the final season. There’s no time for any of that character stuff. Not even with the main characters. The point is to CONCLUDE them - to wrap up and tie together this amazing character-driven saga with its arcs and give them all a compelling and satisfying endgame. But nope… this never happens because there’s no time with all the rest of what’s going on taking the majority of the focus for the season. The final fucking season.
To say I’m disappointed is an understatement. But I can’t say I hate the entire season because there is some great episodes from it that arguably are some of the best in the entire show. It’s just I’m so dissatisfied with how they execute everything.
They don’t really address Willow and her magic. They don’t talk about Tara’s death and let us properly grieve for her. They don’t properly patch up Willow and Buffy’s relationship… there’s a lot left there. Everything just feels like it’s done wrong.
And I can’t even say that I wish they had just dropped Season 6 and 7 entirely because no Dark Willow and no ‘Once More, With Feeling’. 😢

People disagree with me. But I wish the show ended after season 5. By the final 2 seasons, every character felt like a hollow shell of themselves and they were all unlikable.
Season 6 destroyed their character arcs and season 7 just felt like they were going on an apology tour for how bad season 6 was.

@@x-man9473 personally I love Season 6 so I can’t agree with you there.
But I do understand what you mean. There was no way to undo the damage done from the fall out of Season 6 and they don’t even attempt to.

@@phueal Angel is always 26. And Buffy is 22 here. It's always the human who ages past the vampire. The writers were always careful to keep bringing out his sometimes childish nature. But he didn't stalk her. That's a predatory term. He was sent to help her. Otherwise he'd be doing his usual total avoidance of humans - the opposite of stalking. Spike was the predator, and Buffy keeps hating him. But he kept forcing himself on her until the ultimate assault.
