    The newest video in my editor reacts to series. This week I'm watching and reacting to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time.
    The Three Geeks mistakenly turn Buffy invisible. The Slayer takes some advantage from going unseen. Willow has to do the detective without using magic, while Xander finds Spike doing some weird physical training.

    A young woman, destined to slay vampires, demons and other infernal creatures, deals with her life fighting evil, with the help of her friends.
    Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an American supernatural drama television series based on the 1992 film of the same name. It was created by Joss Whedon under his production tag, Mutant Enemy Productions, with later co-executive producers being Jane Espenson, David Fury, David Greenwalt, Doug Petrie, Marti Noxon, and David Solomon.
    The series narrative follows Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar), the latest in a line of young women known as "Vampire Slayers", or simply "Slayers". In the story, Slayers, or the "Chosen Ones", are chosen by fate to battle against vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. Buffy wants to live a normal life, but as the series progresses, she learns to embrace her destiny. Like previous Slayers, Buffy is aided by a Watcher, who guides, teaches and trains her. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy surrounds herself with a circle of loyal friends who become known as the "Scooby Gang" - a reference to the animated franchise Scooby-Doo that features a group of friends solving mysteries together.

    Part 30000000000......of I feel bad for Dawn. Social services, broken arm, and the person who broke it is still living in the same house as you - not to mention your own sister not seeming to care that she could be invisible forever. Her behaviour appeared unreasonable to me on a first watch, but after thinking about it it's really just an expression of her pain, and it resonates with me a lot more the more I think about it.
    Also Willow's struggle in this episode is so well portrayed, and you really get to see just how big of an influence magic had on her life because literally every single little thing is hard for her. Just walking to a place or picking up a book. It's nice to see she's trying finally but it really hits home once the magic has actually been removed that she was totally dependent on it.

      they could have paid more attention to Dawn , like she is some not human creature, having a sister who is a slayer, her other friend is a witch, she may find anything of it interesting but they didn't use it. They remembered about her for like 2 episodes in S6

      Anti-Dawn people seem to forget what she has gone through in her life
      Mother died
      Sister died sacrificing herself for Dawn
      Father showed zero interest in her
      Found out she wasn’t really human
      Sister attacked by someone Dawn trusted
      Willow who acted as her mother almost killed her
      Tara who acted as her mother left her
      Almost sacrificed by an evil God
      She hasn’t had a very easy time in her short life

    I love the ending of this episode, but I don't know why. I think it's because it's hopeful, but still has a somewhat sad tone to it. Willow and Buffy have both made major steps in grappling with their respective issues (addiction / suicidal ideation), but they still have so far to go. And even though they are opening up about their struggles, you can still feel a sort of distance between Buffy and Willow. Almost as if they're talking at each other, instead of to each other.

      I'm guessing you also like the ending of Grave (6x22).
      I think it works the same way: following a prolonged period of sadness and suffering, things start turning around in a positive direction-but without making a huge leap upward in such a short amount of time that it makes the earlier difficulties seem trivial.
      We expect a long descent to be followed by an equally long ascent. Shortening the ascent back to normal into almost nothing would leave us wondering "why didn't they do the fix earlier? I mean, it was easy all along".
      I think our feelings are shaped by our prediction of what's to come, and it's the direction of movement (further up vs. further down) which shapes our predictions.

    i totally agree that it’s always good to try and look at it from the perspective of the character that we’re automatically set up to dislike because they’re opposing the main character that we care about (i feel like if more people could do this there would be less online discourse lol.)
    but what pisses me off is that this is a 21 year old woman who took full custody of her 16 year old sister after their mother died. (even though her dad is STILL ALIVE!) she dropped out of uni, got a shitty job, and took on an insane amount of responsibility because she very obviously loves her sister and is trying. the fact that the social worker immediately goes to removing dawn from her care instead of offering help, resources, advice, MONEY makes me so mad! kids shouldn’t be taken away from their family if that family loves them and is trying! buffy and dawn need help, not separation.

    • @becca1189
      @becca1189 Рік тому +4

      I absolutely agree. A one minute snapshot of a family's life isn't enough to pass judgement. Suspicion of drug abuse (the "magic weed") is definitely reason for concern, but it's not as if there were lines of coke on the living room table. I'm not sure what the laws in California were at the time, but probation seems harsh.
      Maybe the social worker thought Spike was a drug dealer or even a supplier and that Buffy was dealing? Perhaps not just cannabis, but stronger drugs as well. Spike does cut an intimidating figure (just the image he projects). The social worker may not have felt safe there and wanted to do some checking with the local PD to see if they were aware of any connections to Spike/Buffy/Willow and local drug traffic.
      That's my head cannon anyway.
      Of course, if we're going with the 'magic addiction = drug addiction' metaphor, Dawn is living in the same house with someone who has just begun recovery & is responsible for her broken arm because she was taken to a drug den and was subsequently in a accident. Yes, Willow needs support & compassion, but is it really the best thing for Dawn? I dunno. It's complicated.
      I like Dr Mamma Jones' motto: We do the best we can with the information we have at the time. Anyone accusing Buffy of not doing her best is just plain wrong. I agree with you there.

    The thing is, dark magic specifically has been shown to be both a literal high and a spiritually corrupting influence since 'The Dark Age' in Season 2. Giles also suggested in the Season 2 finale that once you use magic, whatever you use stays in your system. Basically, Willow has a lot of junk (dark magic) in her system at this point, and that's what she's channeling whenever she does magic. Or at least that's how I interpret it. It's not a rock-solid interpretation, and it requires even more mental gymnastics further on in the series, but it works for me.
    I actually don't mind this perspective on magic. I'm a practicing witch and it's not too far off of my own practice - that you need to be careful and intentional with the magic you use, because it has consequences for your spiritual wellbeing. It's not something to be abused.

Luckily someone who I used to be friends with who was a high priest managed to get through to me before I went too far but he made it clear I can't practise the dark stuff I was doing again (to give a context of how dark I was going I had a dream while meditating of me invoking lucifer that felt so real not saying lucifier is a bad entity/diety to work with BUT for someone like me with BPD not a good idea to work with)

    Using magic for convenience is how Willow got starting down that path of addiction; she needs to not use magic at all, because if she starts using it for small stuff, she'll keep rationalizing each next step. One day she's using magic so she doesn't have to get up to get a book that is out of reach, the next she's using magic to change peoples' memories in order to avoid an argument. Until she fully understands why using magic to solve all her problems is dangerous, she has to learn to live without it.

    There are a lot of people who see this as just a bit of fun... but Buffy sexually assaults Spike and actively ignores his withdrawing of consent. She has to be kicked out by him. Which, when you remember that she is the physically stronger, is not a great look. A lot of people are critical of the magic being drugs metaphor, but I think it really works. Something difficult to learn that makes you feel helpful and powerful, but can be abused and ruin your life. There's a movie called The Wrestler (spoilers for that) where a pro wrestler has to retire because of health reasons, and he builds a nice new life that's simple and good, but he couldn't keep himself away from the spotlight and dies in the ring.
    In Breaking Bad, Walter White (spoilers again) developed uncontrollable hubris by gaining power in the drug business, when he could have lived a quiet, comfortable life by getting out before everything fell apart. There's something I call Akira syndrome, where people who get too much power feel like they can do anything they want. Faith was like that. Willow is no different. Huh. I never thought about it before, but she basically is Walter White. Someone who was meek and pushed around by everyone has a sort of inner awakening and discovers they can take control and not accept being told no again, which can become very toxic.
    There's also different kinds of magic. Willow used mostly good or neutral spells, but remember Giles telling her that she wouldn't want to meet the few people in the world who could have done a resurrection. The stuff where Willow would go into a trance at some guy's seedy hidden den is also on the darker side. It's like going from pot to crystal meth, heroin, and PCP. You can also change the metaphor into an eating disorder, a gambling addiction, Batman, etc.

      Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one that truly understands this “magic is a drug” metaphor given there is such a controversial take on it by the majority of the fandom.
      People need to understand that it’s actually not about the magic. That’s just the tool. The addiction is on the power Willow can accumulate through using magic. But the reason why it’s magic specifically that is the substance she’s addicted to is because that is what Willow is best at. That’s her most useful and valuable skill and Willow wants to feel that use and value as much as she can.
      It makes sense because when people use drugs and go through substance abuse, it’s not actually the substance that they’re addicted to, it’s all about what they can avoid or escape from in using that substance. Emotions, anxieties - all kinds of internal struggles. What’s poorly communicated about Willow’s addiction arc is that she’s using the power of magic to offset her insecurities. Using them as an emotional crutch. And internal struggles can manifest into external ones when you’re that deep into it. So I don’t think it’s for shits and giggles that they turn the metaphor to literal. It’s not supposed to be in your face or on the nose. It’s supposed to be making it apparent that Willow is so in deep with it that it’s become an external problem.
      I don’t know. It makes complete sense to me. I’ll admit it’s not written as well as it could be. But then I also think and believe that the intention is for it not to be because the arc isn’t playing out from the inside-looking out. We’re not following Willow’s arc this season through Willow’s eyes. But we are following Buffy’s arc this season through Buffy’s eyes. I genuinely feel that the point is for it to be mixed signal-ly because people that are not familiar with addiction don’t actually understand it - what it is, what it can lead to, how destructive it can be, the working relationships that can be destroyed from it.
      No, I think the artistic intention is for us to be confused and even frustrated by the writing of it because then that means WE can learn something from it along with the characters.
      Power corruption and addiction and then a further theme down the line puts it all into perspective. It’s not two completely different and random things going on with Willow. It does make sense. You just got to think about it deeper to understand the intention behind it.
      If you keep the focus more on the insecurities that Willow has and how accumulating power makes her feel good and less about it being magic… you’ll get it. It’ll hit you and click. It’s actually really clever and profound what they’re doing with the character this season. It just requires a little bit of mental gymnastics.

    • @TigerNightmare
      @TigerNightmare Рік тому +2

      @@Girl4Music Interesting. I like my Walter White comparison better, though. Mental gymnastics/unclear writing on purpose sounds kind of like Stockholm syndrome bad writing apologism when it's not bad writing so much as it's misunderstood. Willow was headed to this place since season 4 when she almost cast some spell on Oz in anger. Manipulating Tara isn't much different from abusive partners lying and gaslighting. I don't see it as a literal addiction, but a moral failing. She stopped being responsible with her power, outright abusing it. Like black suit symbiote Spider-Man, loving the power, but losing sight of what he really cares about. There's just some kinds of magic that corrupts, like an offering to Osiris.

    • @alicequinn505
      @alicequinn505 Рік тому

      I agree. Some people view magic as a metaphor for lesbian relationships, and get upset at it being portrayed in a bad way, but that doesn't make sense. Besides, Tara is still safely doing magic. It's a simplistic take and I think takes like yours are better.

    • @Girl4Music
      @Girl4Music Рік тому

      @@alicequinn505 Look - I’ve said this before
      Metaphors can have multiple meanings or representations that work together to progress the narrative or develop a character’s arc.
      Yes, magic is a metaphor for sex in Season 4.
      Yes, magic is a metaphor for drugs in Season 6.
      Yes, magic is used as a date-rape drug specifically for sex. It makes sense. Just think about it deeper.
      In an upcoming episode they literally do the same thing with technology. Use it as a way to rape/sexual assault. I’m starting to think that what people really have an issue with is that the sex as magic metaphor was portrayed as something sweet and romantic and cute but the drugs as magic metaphor is portrayed as abusive and manipulative and horrific. What they have a problem with is the tonal change, not the metaphors being changed.
      But there was nothing sweet or romantic or cute about THAT scene. It’s framed that way because Whedon didn’t understand the implications behind it. That Tara being literally under a spell that would negate her consent to have sex means that Willow took sexual advantage of Tara because she knew and didn’t care about being physically intimate with Tara all the while she was unable to truly consent.
      There’s no mixed metaphor really. What’s actually happened is the metaphor has evolved into something negative because the character the metaphor is used with has and people don’t like it.
      The technological equivalent of Lethe’s Bramble is the Cerebral Dampner. It does the same exact thing. It’s intended use is mind control. Putting the victim under the influence of its effects to be willing to perform sexual acts with the perpetrator unawares.

    Here we see Buffy acting as a kind of 'sponsor' for Willow trying to cleanse the house of anything that might tempt Willow to have a relapse. We can see how frosty the Dawn/Willow relationship has now become. Interesting with Spike and Buffy in the kitchen, her addiction to him is also now critical too, as she can't seem to resist his advances. Some comedy with the Probation Inspector with the bag of weed, but again it is serious as it could lead to Buffy losing Dawn, coupled with what the Inspector sees as really strange characters living there such as Willow and Spike. The Trio now are irritating beyond endurance, and continue to make Buffy's life even more difficult. Buffy actually seems to be enjoying being invisible at this stage as she can now exploit her urges and desires for Spike without getting caught. When Xander comes into the crypt we have the funny, but ridiculous scenario of Spike pretending he is exercising. We have to ask ourselves the uncomfortable question here, is Buffy exploiting Spike? Crazy I know, but this is what is actually happening here. He is being used for her own sexual gratification, with no consequences for her, interesting juxtaposition in role reversal between the two, we even see the soulless Spike being almost hurt by her attitude towards him. Comedy relief at then end with the word 'nemesis' nemesises' etc. Great conversation with Buffy and Willow at the end. A lot to unpack in this episode, hence the lengthy comment. I loved S6, but can see why many did not.

    I never understood many of the OG fanbase saying, "Shut up Dawn," as I think both in S5 and this season, she has grounded reasons for being upset: Knowing the Scoobies and her family are acting odd and lying to her in S5, finding out why in S5, worrying about Glory, Buffy dying, Social services, a broken arm, the person who broke it (Willow) is still living in the same house as you when Tara is the better choice, Buffy not caring about being invisible forever and trying to have fun in serious moments. She seems justifiable in so many moments to me. In this episode, Dawn is calling Buffy out on what Buffy assumes is a reason to just cut loose and avoid responsibility due to her depression.
    Speaking more of social services, is Buffy really the best person to be legally responsible over Dawn? Sadly, I don't believe so. Doris Kroeger is doing her job correctly considering Buffy's emotional state and actions. Also, if Buffy was frustrated at Spike for being there when social services shows up, why didn't she just give him his lighter when he asked for it aka before Doris Kroeger showed up?
    So, Buffy while invisible and with Spike not aware of what's happening, throws herself at him. That's sexual assault. And she doesn't tell him, he has to figure out what's going on. Then after Xander leaves, Spike tells Buffy to get her clothes and go home. She instead gives him a blow job. The next scene we see Buffy, she is upset that Spike has kicked her out. How is it that Spike kicked her out? He would either have to stop her after she was done or force her off him. Even if neither of these incidents are viewed as sexual assault (I personally view both of them that way) Buffy doesn't come off as a decent human being either way.
    I've heard this episode exists because Sarah Michelle Gellar was filming _Scooby Doo._ I don't know how true it is, but it would make sense. with timing and considering the rat in _Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered._
    Why do the characters care so much Buffy cut her hair? It's hardly the first time. Never this short, but not something to write about in a script as if it were a plot point either way. Why she did it only the audience's knows, so to the characters why is it a big deal?

      Doris Kroeger is just a cog of the machine.
      She decides if people is fit or not just on a check list.
      Of course Dawn is in danger there because everyone would be in danger there.
      But Sunnydale is all the same and a foster care home I bet would not be better.
      She, like near all bureaucrats, just follow rules without any interest in the reality and consequences of her actions.

      Just because you can explain why an annoying character doesn't make them not annoying. I've softened on Dawn as time has gone by but most of the time I find her and her stories annoying and uninteresting.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan Рік тому +3

      @@painlord2k That's the point in this situation. Willow abused Dawn and Buffy still allows her to live there. As part of the cog, Doris did her job properly (not even knowing everything she could have taken Dawn from the home for) and Buffy sabotaged it, not because she had a bad day, but because she isn't someone who should be legally responsible for Dawn until she gets her act together. Being in danger from slayer related stuff is different because that is and should be hidden from the world. Willow breaking Dawn's arm with or without magic had no excuse if called out by Doris and the excuse to give doesn't look any better for Willow unless its blamed on someone else. Also, her father is still alive, so whether he abandoned them or not they would consider him the better option (and watch him like a hawk until or if Buffy got her act together.) Neither option is ideal, but Buffy shouldn't be legally responsible. This is just another reason Giles shouldn't have left. He could contact the council, who would do some paperwork mojo with their connections (because they would be looking for a way to be "let back in," as stated by Buffy in S5) to give Giles responsibility, or have Giles call the council while in England and have them do said paperwork mojo to give said responsibility to Tara as no one else would be a better option this season.

      Willow didn't broke Dawn arm on purpose, just by accident.
      OK, she was unhinged because of magic-trip and the rest, but she recognized it was her fault and accepted to stop using magic. She, also, has a story of being good, helping, loving Dawn, etc. She is family, not a stranger.
      If you took all the children in similar situations, half of them should pass thru the Social Services.
      Your solution is "by the book" and a Cut & dry "one size fit all". I'm the government and by the height of my incompetence and ignorance I decide what is good for others.
      I could understand if Dawn was abused or seriously neglected. But this is not the case.
      It is surely better when the government give a girl to a sex offender and he impregnates her (as it happened recently).

    Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Gone’. May contain spoilers.
    When it comes to addiction, and specifically the first stage of the recovery process, one of the worst things you can do as a supporter of a person in their recovery is to pass judgement on them for anything bad that happens. This includes accusations and jumping to conclusions without any evidence - just based on your own pre-conceptions or pre-assumptions of that person. When Willow realizes that Xander has come to verbally attack her for doing something he believes she’s doing, she immediately retaliates to him by getting defensive and then attacking back. It’s something we’ve seen her do a few times in the season so far. However, this time it’s uncalled for and she has all the right to defend herself since it certainly wasn’t her fault what has happened. As Willow said - it’s convenient to blame her because she’s the only one, to their knowledge, that messes around with magic that causes bad things to happen and Xander and Anya assumes that it is magic that is what has made Buffy invisible. And while I do understand their point of view - that it would likely be Willow that has caused Buffy’s invisibleness… given the fact she’s swore off magic and gone completely cold turkey with it in the last episode, it is extremely disrespectful and discriminatory to automatically assume it’s her doing.
    It doesn’t happen very often - but this time - I’m on Willow’s side. While I don’t think she has the best way of arguing her case here - being passive-aggressive and then storming off out the door rather than communicating calmly and honestly - I think she was very right to call Xander out for being a judgemental prick. And if she knew it was Anya that originally made the suggestion to clue Xander in - she would be pissed. ‘Cause she doesn’t like Anya as it is. So she’d be less friendly than usual with her if she had found out Anya was prejudiced. She’d have some choice words for her, to be sure. What Willow did in swearing off magic for good was very difficult and very courageous considering how reliant she was on it. And she doesn’t need her fair-weather friends to come at her when she’s trying very hard to cope without it. She already feels guilty enough as it is for what happened with the car wreckage and seriously injuring Dawn. It won’t help any case to just come to that conclusion on coincidence. ‘Cause it is a coincidence that someone else is messing around with magic at the same time she’s begun recovering from an overusing and abusing of it. And it makes sense why she takes the initiative to be the one to figure out how and why and where it’s happening. She wants to clear her name. She wants to clear her name because she doesn’t want to be accused for doing something she’s entirely innocent of doing. And she doesn’t want her friends to lose faith in her efforts to kick the habit. No, I’m totally on Willow’s side for this particular situation. I believe she’s in the right to get upset about it. I just don’t believe she had the best method of doing so. But that’s totally understandable when she’s upset.
    There’s no arrogance or entitlement showing here. She’s just venting her emotions because she’s chosen to do something that’s going to be a real hardship for her, and Xander and Anya, and hell… even Dawn can deal with the inconveniences and the coincidences. What’s most aggravating is how Xander’s saying how he isn’t getting mad, he isn’t blaming, he understands relapse is apart of recovery,… and yet proceeds to treat Willow as if she’s already failed at it. It is flat out passing judgement on her what he does in this scene and he doesn’t get my defence this time. She does.
    When watching this episode, I feel very proud of what Willow accomplishes in being able to get through the day without being dependent on magic. Especially with what the events of the day call for her to do. She successfully exposes The Trio and clears her name in one fell swoop - without the use of any magic. And you can see that there’s instances where she’s tempted to do so… but she has the willpower to resist. She’s strong, she’s brave and she’s powerful with or without magic. But the very fact she does what she does in this episode without using it once when she has spent pretty much her entire existence since developing her magical abilities thinking she’s useless and valueless without it… I beam with pride. She’s an inspiration to recovering addicts everywhere.

    I wish I’d figured this’ll out on my own; sadly, someone had to point it out. If you define “invisibile human” as “all light passes through the human”, that means that photons are passing through every cell of the human without interacting with it in any way. Which means it’s passing through the human’s eyeballs without interacting with them.
    Which means the human is blind. :)

      Which is why one cannot apply the laws of physics on shows like this. People being able to go through walls -> would fall right through the earth. People moving extremely fast -> would be completely incinerated from friction. And so on and on :)

      Oh, i get that. I just like sharing the “blind” thing because it blew my mind a little when it was pointed out to me. :)
      That said, I’ve often thought it would be interesting if someone tried to do a superhero-type show where the laws of physics were followed meticulously. Ignore the physics aspects of the powers themselves, but keep it accurate for that person’s interactions with the real world. “Ok, we can’t drop this bus on Superman because it would hammer him into the ground like a golf tee, so what *can* we do?” I’ve seen some comics writers do it a bit, but never a fully built world, and never in popular media. Might utterly fail for any number of reasons, but I can’t shake the notion that it would be interesting to try.

    I love the comment at the beginning with all the scenes from the show...it's the same thing I've done to the reviews of another UA-camr who talked about the 2 seasons of"Wicked Sciene"..he put some random static images throughout the video...I took his audio and put actual scenes+some personal comments. It made the whole thing more dynamic and entertaining IMO.(Even if I would have gladly done without all those Spuffy scenes for obvious reasons.🤮🤮🤮 10:25 - 10:27 *I* CAN!🙋‍♂)
    11:06 - 11:09 Gosh!Since the show came out all I can think of whenever I hear that word is Wednesday Addams!!🖤I already loved her back in the '90s,but now I literally cannot not think of her whenever I hear her name!😵
    Can I throw an unpopular opinion out there?WHY is Dawn not living with Buffy not in her best interest?Ok,I get it,Buffy loves Dawn,but..she *is* not the best person to raise her!She's constantly risking her life and putting everyone around her in danger,willingly or not,and right now she's also dealing with depression and leaving with a drug addicted on recovery(not to mention she has _always_ been the main target of all sorts of monsters and psychopaths like those 3 losers who are lame but _also_ dangerous!)...how is staying with her the best option for Dawn?🤨
    Invisible Buffy is giving me a lot of S1 Buffy vibes ^w^ (if we ignore all the parts with Spike,which I would gladly do)!
    18:52 - 19:05 So reletable,honestly!X-P Expecially for people who grew up in the '90s/early 2000s!😵
