Ethics and meat consumption | DW Documentary

- Are we really so different from the farm animals we eat? Philosophical thought experiments elucidate this question, bringing together the differing perspectives of philosophers and researchers, along with entertaining animations.
Peter Singer, Professor of Ethics at Princeton University, is seen as the philosophical father of the contemporary animal rights movement. Based on the philosophy of utilitarianism, the doctrine that sees the basis of moral behavior in the utilitarian, he convincingly explains why we need to consider the interests and feelings of animals in our views on meat consumption just as much as those of other humans.
But what do animals really feel? Sara Hintze is an animal welfare researcher at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna. She studies the emotions of farm animals. Touching footage from her lab shows young fattening pigs displaying astonishingly human-like behavior in psychological experiments.
How do we know that animals feel, but that plants do not? Evolutionary biologist Jon Mallatt is concerned with precisely this boundary between the conscious and the unconscious world. He takes viewers on a journey 500 million years back in time, and explains why animals began to develop the first feelings.
Finally, we hear from Dan Shahar, one of the few philosophers to present an ethical defense of the consumption of meat. His arguments don’t gloss over the realities of livestock farming, but pose the question: what moral demands do we want to make on ourselves?

I stopped eating animal products 12 years ago, lost a bunch of weight, kept it off, and am very healthy. No animals have to die to be my food, I am very comfortable morally with that.
actually if we think more globaly that is not 100% true. How many animals had to be killed directly and indirectly to allow crops fields to exist? How many were killed to allow the cobstruction of roads and transport the vegetables, fruits and cereals to our houses? I think being vegan in a western city is always better but mire or less we are always destroying natural resources including animals. Natives used to eat meat and respected a lot more the natural balance than any modern vegan.
@@farmoboy83 Some good points there. Speaking of globally, I note the vast swaths of the Amazon Rain forest being destroyed in order to raise cattle. Perhaps nothing is 100 percent correct, but I'm still good with my vegetables.

Excellent video! So many people are fine with horrific conditions so long as it keeps the price down. My wife and I became vegan after seeing how they're really treated thanks to documentaries like Dominion. I think this series on the meat industry is a fantastic addition to the list of important documentaries.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I couldn't agree with you more! Dominion is the most horrific, sadistic, cruel documentary I've ever watched. However, it is the most honest, important and necessary film that needs to be viewed by all, including college and university students. It should be made mandatory viewing in the high school curriculum - for 18 yrs old. The worldwide animal husbandry/agricultural industry have hidden behind walls and remained unaccountable for decades. Nothing is ever done to overhaul the industry and give better quality lives to farm animals facing slaughter. Dominion have been the only film company to have the courage of their convictions and face off with this corrupt, inhumane industry. People should at least know that slick little slogan used in the food and restaurant industries nowadays 'from the paddock to plate', skips a whole big bad chapter. The barbaric, archaic methods used in 'modern day' slaughter houses and abbatoirs across the world. If people choose to eat meat, they need to see this process and how their food is really bred, 'manufactured', cruelly warehoused and slaughtered.

The Question is, why some feel empathy to animals and others don’t? How can one takes one’s life for pleasure and not feel any guilt?
Yes exactly!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I guess it revolves around egocentrism. It is just more comfortable to shut one's eyes. To not allow the thought that some animals (at least some) deserve empathy is more comfortable.
I do not think there is more logic behind it. Otherwise we would keep those domesticated animals that are closest to us as pets. Those who kept diabetics alive before the synthetic production of insulin. Instead we kill the pigs. And mistreat them.

That's a very complex question and truly anti human. Animal meat made humans human. Plus more animals are killed and nature is destroyed to grow plant foods. Therfore, it would be less of an impact on animals if we all Become carnivores

I need to be honest here, and the overall costs with purchasing meat these days has made me rethink my consumption of it, and the ethics behind raising those animals have left me conflicted for years. These days I rarely eat red meat, that's not to say I've eliminated it entirely. I do eat the occasional burger, or sausage, maybe 3-4 times a year. Mostly I eat fish, chicken eggs, and at least once a month I eat chicken or turkey. The fish I catch myself, the turkey I hunt myself, the chicken and eggs I purchase from my local farmer near my home.

DW - Thank you for this honest, well researched and confronting video. Animals are indeed sentient beings. Yet, there are still many people worldwide, who challenge this fact! Especially global animal husbandry practises and the agricultural farming industries. They don't just need to change their archaic, horrendous treatment of animals. They must change their uncaring, unethical mindset. Only then, can positive changes begin to happen. While the farming industry refuses to acknowledge this inconvenient truth, all animals will continue to suffer needlessly. The tragic irony of the story is, animals or 'products' who feed, nourish and keep billions of humans alive everyday, are treated in the most appalling, inhumane way. They have the shortest lives in the animal kingdom. If we're going to consume animals, then we should at the very least, respect them, make their short lives cruelty free and the most comfortable we can! The vast majority of the meat we consume comes from factory farming 99% we all know the physical / emotional ABUSE NIGHTMARE these animals endure on a daily basis even
many small farms have these same problems if you continue to consume you are paying for and supporting this Industry and ensuring this NIGHTMARE will continue/ it's easy to eat a plant based diet as long as you get enough protein You don't have to change overnight start gradually making more plant based meals that you like / one person can easily save the lives of Hundreds of animals from a life of torture and misery
What if you just care more about the safety and well-being of your family and not unknown animals?
I have raised livestock for decades, I favor livestock welfare improvements. Realistically, livestock do not have the option for a long, comfortable life in the wild. Their life in the wild will be shorter and more brutal than life on the farm. Given a choice between a reasonably comfortable life on a farm and non-existence, most life forms will prefer life. I believe meat consumption is as ethical as our farming and slaughtering practices.
There's chain reaction for a change. I was the first vegetarian in my family at the age of 15, then my aunt became vegetarian, then my father, a brother, a sister, a causin sister, one of my niece and list is coming gradually. Nobody forced them to become but they got inspired and their compassion woke up.
Edit : only through understanding other's suffering, altruism, moral ethic and compassion can bring vegan or vegetarianism into world. 5% do that due to health consciousness.

Any animal that has lungs and large intestine experiences loss, grief, and sadness. Any animal that has kidneys and bladder experiences fear. plants also have pain receptors...
pain receptors are connected to the brain which plants don't have
No they don't, and the 6 people liking this comment has 0 understanding of biology. Pain receptors connect to a brain. Plants don't have brains, and they don't have pain receptors either. Only creatures that can MOVE have reason to have emotions, because emotions are functions meant to motivate movement towards sustenance and away from danger. Since plants can't move, they have not developed sentience, feeling or emotions.
And EVEN if plants were feeling, sentient creatures, a vegan diet would be more moral. A vegan diet takes on average 7-10 times less plants. Why? Because the animals you eat need to be fed tons and tons of plants. So if plants could feel, that would be yet another reason to eat vegan.

All animals including humans require organic material derived from living beings as food. These living beings can be plants or other animals or both. Remember, plants are also living things. They are just soundless and motionless unlike animals. In any way, you are kiliing a living thing to eat.
We just have excess of brain to overanalyze everything.

To me, the experiment blowing air at the pig didn’t necessarily prove boredom. Because the human knows they’ll get the electric shock if they choose. Whereas the pig doesn’t know they’ll always have the air blow. They might be just experimenting to see if they get something different ie. food, drink.
The argument that a small group of people can’t make a difference isn’t true. All revolutions started with a small group of people. Furthermore as a vegetarian, I influence people and the world I transact with. The choices you make everyday have an accumulated impact in months, years and decades. We just need to act consciously and not compulsively.
Exactly. And abstaining from taking part in a harmful action isn't a form of "activism" that is an unreasonable demand. Someone can be an activist about whatever the heck they like, and still just not take part in animal exploitation.
full vegan means no harm at all
I think the individual's choice would only then make no difference if the number of people wanting to buy would exceed the amount of the resource. For example, if the meat section he bought the pork shoulder from would have been sold out at the end of the day either way because people were lining up to clear everything out, his choice didn't matter. If this is not the case, it WILL matter how much you buy, and what as there will be unsold items. The more stuff goes unsold, the less the vedor would stock, resulting in less animal products being demanded. Furthermore, the social impact of normalizing having a BBQ less reliant on meat would in turn influence others...his actions draw wider circles than he thinks.

Would animal rights activist protest in scenario like we have in Africa whereby animals raised by pastoral communities are killed in times of hunger and drought? What is the purpose of animal life in this world? What is the purpose of human life in this world? Do both lives hold same merit? If not, which is more essential than the other, thus used to support it? This issue of animal rights is only developing controversy by viewing animals as humans although they are not. Sure it is good to be mindful of inflicting unnecessary suffering on animals but a line needs to be established on what is the greater good for humans essentially.
We share way more common features and behaviours with (other) animals than not.
So... what about the trillions (quadrillions) of insects killed by pesticides to produce crops for "ethical vegetarians" vs. the huge number which benefit from grass-fed cattle, say (standard practice in the UK).
It is not possible to do NO "harm" and one cow can feed many people for many weeks, with little to nothing going "to waste".

Socrates fight to bring us, a society where we can analyze and build something better for all of us. Unfortunately, sophism continues to win this battle. The documentary was excellent and obvious to me the first minutes explain all. I suggest everyone who cares about animals reflect in truth. Who you are? Looks like simple questions, but if your pursuit the truth to answer, and analyze the words that you choose to explain, you will see that can be deeper, and not superficial as a sophist society teach you to be.
There is no ethical argument that can justify needless animal cruelty. There are only excuses from selfish people.

I am glad the series is not over. This film ends on the matter of 'taste' - and this is so huge a point that surely the next program will be looking at 'alternative proteins' - the growing investment into the development of lab-grown meat, harming no animal at all. I envisage a world where there are two markets for meat - one which grants animals an outdoor life, as close to their natural beings as possible, for as long as possible, and a very humane slaughter process. That meat will cost its true price. It will not be cheap. And the other market will be lab-grown meat which tastes as near as damn it as good as natural meat but is much cheaper. It will not be the same as what I call 'humane meat' - the real thing - but it will be very acceptable for many of us to have that special taste which a vegetarian diet just cannot provide. It's great to be able to mix meat and veg!

You see, that’s where you’re wrong. There’s this 5 minute video called Dairy is Scary. Please watch it if you truly believe what you said.
@@com.grenate Bro. I am from India. We have been consuming milk since literally thousands of years. Animals have been living in harmony with native Hindu population since the start of the civilization. Even our ancient scriptures talks about cows, buffalos, goats and other animals. We do not have a concept of killing animals for food. My grandparents used to have cows and buffalos solely for the purpose of farming and getting milk from them. No animal were ever harmed or tortured to get milk. They live happily amongst us. I have spent my childhood with animals. And its both shameful and laughable to see that it takes a research to find out a cow experiences the feeling of happiness same as humans. If you just spend a few weeks with them, you can see how intelligent and compassionate these animals are. They are sentient beings and understand human emotions very well. They are loyal to you, they recognize your face and voice and if you let them free, they come back to you. That also says a lot about consuming milk. If it was a torture, they will never come back to you.
@@wrightvcx2249 your 'beliefs' don't change the facts, all animal protein especially milk and eggs is harmful to humans... and humans eating flesh is harmful to the planet as a whole. It can't support 8 billion large carnivores. Do the ecological math.
@@rickdworsky6457 If milk is harmful to humans, how did people in India survived in the last 10,000 years. This is the kind of irrational argument which comes from meat eaters as well when they try to defend by saying even plants breathe so we should stop cutting plants and eating them.
The video mentions exactly the same behavior as shown by you. If you are a meat eater, you will already be pre-disposed towards your hypothesis that animals are nothing more than food. They do not have feelings. They're god-made machines.
Just because you agree with the part in the video about meat consumption not being ethical, you want to put the same argument for milk as well. Again relying on stupid, illogical, and idiotic research which just justifies their already pre-made conclusion.
If you have worked on a dairy farm you will see there are still a lot of problems
thanks for raising awareness. liked the video. hope factory farming is banned. animals deserve freedom and respect
I've never needed anyone to explain to me why Imprisonment / murder and the daily torture of animals is wrong / most of us know this so we MUST align our actions with what we know is right/ Easy to eat a plant based diet as long as you get enough protein
100% agreed
Not quite. Most people are unaware of the sheer magintude of the wrongdoing. I mean it's not just imprisonment and murder: it's torture and horror. Every single hamburger.
I am aware of the wrongdoings but still have to eat meat because my body doesn't seem to absorb the protein from the plants very well. I try everything I can but without a sufficient amount of fish, poultries or shellfishes, my body don't function well and I keep getting digeative issues, sleep issues and weight issues(muscle loss). I am currently eating a little amount of wild caught or either fish, chickens, shellfishes or porks(they consist of only 10% of my meal) but I am still trying out all kinds of protein sources like soy, nuts and legumes to diversify my protein source so that I can eat meat as little as possible.
Getting enough protein isn't an issue on any diet, including plant-based. The only people who don't get enough protein are those who don't eat enough (starving people, anorexics, etc.). Most people actually consume too much protein. What people don't get enough of is fiber, fruits and vegetables, and those are also very easy to get on a plant-based diet.
Most people don't know that all whole foods contain all 3 macros, including protein, and that many plant sources contain high amounts of protein. People can get their proteins from whole plant sources (beans, lentils, peas, nuts), minimally processed sources (tofu, seitan), or junk food (plant burgers, sausages, ch*cken wings, etc.), and that's just a few examples.
@@subliminalfalllenangel2108 No offense intended, but no-one is saying you have to get your protein from "plants." Nobody is condemned to eat meat because there are no healthy options. There are plenty of sources for protein. Best wishes from Vermont ❄️💙🧐

The introduction reminds me of Goerge Owel's Animal Farm.
What if the tomato and onion think about the same when we try to eat them.. I am vegetarian but some how the logic does not fit together. So are we grouping what does not have nervous system does not have emotion like the way we use to and therefore it is okay to eat those because we do not understand their system
you have all wrong we are separated at a young age from home sent to school where we learn to run a treadmill for 40-50 yrs and milked for what we earn then discarded when old
Meat: people are free to eat as much - or as little of it - as they want. I'm a vegetarian. I have lots of friends who aren't. We've never gotten into a fistfight over steaks vs. tofu. 😐
Mr. Shahar doesn´t convince ar all. To say for instance ,that not everybody can become a nurse in hospital, has nothing to do with the question . To me it would sound much more convincing, if he would have a closer look how his pork is "produced" how the pig ended his life. The meat industry is cruel in form of how the life beginns, the upbringing and the slaughtering. Even the transport is torture. There is no second in a life of an animal .whos destinction is to become meat to eat, produce eggs or milk ,that has their wellbeing in mind. The industry is concentrated on profit, low cost and less effort in short time. No place for thoughts about feelings like happiness, security or contempt. To sell meat for relativly low prices, industrial farming is the only option. What individuals make of that is their own descision, but Mr. Shahar ´s "philosophical" thoughts are not going very deep and seem to be ,at least to me not well balanced.
For some reason nobody has issues with pork Consumption.
I know people who care about animals are even concerned about pigs. But most people focus only on cows and buffaloes that's it
just go vegan, stop all the nonsense
Interesting story
Why are no animals interviewed?
Exactly this a very biased piece 😁
Very nice documentary. However while I understand the argument of sentience and believe it to a certain degree there are a range of animals that eat living things. Are predators unethical? Or onminvores? Why is being herbivores a none compromising requirement for humans and not for other “sentient” beings?
Well argued what about the herbivores aren't plant living things
@@catherinewambui5771 I agree I think plants are living things but the documentary specifically excludes them. It rationalizes that plants are not sentient at all. Which I do have arguments against but I won’t make those here.
Had you evolve to eat animals you’d be able to grab them with you teeth and be able to tear the fur and skin with them (like true predators do) and eat them raw - which you won’t - it’s quite easy and simple. So no, NATURAL predators are not unethical.
@@remi_gio actually there is a lot of evidence to suggest that cooking animals came long after eating them. So yes they were eaten raw for a very long time. Evidence almost suggests that this was the largest contributor to brain grown. Further more your teeth are not herbivores they actually fit neatly in line with the tooth structure of other omnivores. Especially the mammalian ones such as bears. Also we digest meat very well which leads to another idea that it is a natural adaptation and not a ideological one. These are all scientific viewpoints. Which sort of shocks me with the vegan crowd because it proves to me that they are being ideological instead of scientific. Anything which requires one to ignore facts to support a viewpoint is bordering on a dogma and therefore I can’t agree to it. Let’s not forget that most vegans also have to take supplements because they are deficient in a myriad of vitamins and minerals which their omnivore counterparts tend not to be. Were our ancestors in caves eating supplements?
@@angelmujahid2233 😂😂😂 really dude? We are omnivores only because we cook. We evolved from apes… are apes meat eating? Nope. Don’t make me laugh. What is this nonsense about taking supplements? An urban myth that has no evidence in science. May I suggest looking into …wait for it… a whole of India where most people are vegetarian… 🤦🏻♂️
29:00 this dude is bending over backwards to justify something he knows is morally reprehensible and environmentally disastrous just because he enjoys it.
first few seconds were Just WOWWWW🤩🤩🤩 !!!
Animals suffer the most from all the living things. People are the most cruel creatures ........
That last person - the pro-meat philosopher had no philosophical point whatsoever. Convenience. That was his entire argument.
Please see 4:04 thru 4:54 Animals that have THESE capacities and Humans who lack these capacities
If I am not the one who has put life into something, I simply have no right to take it away from it. As simple as that
You can plant a tree, or get a few cows, chickens, goats, pigs etc. give them shelter, food, water, take them to the vet, mate them and then they will eventualy have offspings. Then you can eat them. It's been done like this for thousands of years.
@@drupiROM "It's been done for a long time" - This is not a good argument to keep doing something. Do you know this was a common pro-slavery argument? It's a logical fallacy (mistake) known as "appeal to tradition". You have to show WHY this "traditional" way is superior to all the alternatives, because something having been done for a long time doesn't automatically mean it is good or okay.
"It's been done like that for thousands of years" - you might as well reject all human techonological and moral advancements every made, by this logic.

Excellent
As someone who's iron deficient, meat is the only way I can bring my iron level up. Iron supplements and beans don't play well with my digestive system. So if the world goes all vegan I'd have died the next time I get seriously injured because of my low blood iron. Not everyone can live on veg alone.
I have a lot to re-consider, thank you for this documentary.
Thank you for watching!

The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
I just started eating only meat and drinking only water 10 days ago. Never felt better. We have a carnivore digestive system and almost all plants are toxic in some way with wheat and soy being two of the worst.
