This episode has some special significance for me personally because it was the last episode I was able to watch with my father before he passed away. After season 1 I tried to get him to watch it and he said that he didn't like zombie stuff so he didn't think he would like it. But I insisted and he ended up loving the show. Wish we could have seen more of it together but I've still got some great memories.
"You tried to kill me?! You SHOT LUCILLE!" Negan is one of those characters that won't be ignored, for good or worse. - Lucille having her own place at the table.
I love the way Negan reacts to Rosita trying to kill him. Its the biggest emotional outburst we’ve ever seen him have. But then he calms himself down and focuses on what’s important. The bullet. Just killing Rosita in a fit of rage isn’t going to help. Like Eugene said, It was unlikely that she would be the one who got punished for trying to kill him. He admires the people who are strong enough to stand up to him (Daryl, Carl? Rosita) He sees them as potential assets to him. That’s why he didn’t kill Daryl in the clearing. He thought “I could use someone like you.” And that’s why he didn’t kill Rosita.
Leila Yeah. He’s probably attracted to her but I think he knows there is no way she would go for marrying him, and he would never force it. He respects her too much
I'm not sure if this was intentional, but there are some slight parallels between this episode and the season premiere. Negan first kills someone who would be a potential threat (Abraham/Spencer, though they are different kinds of threats). Then someone retaliates (Daryl/Rosita), which in turn causes another death (Glenn/Olivia). In the end, someone is taken (Daryl/Eugene). I wasn't happy with Rosita this episode. She let her hatred cloud her judgement, which caused a death and a kidnapping. I'm not saying she isn't allowed to feel that way, but that she needs to put it aside for the greater good. Rick is a prime example of this. Bit of trivia; the reason why Arat chose to execute Olivia was because of the two guns that were missing from Alexandria's armory back in episode four. Since Olivia was in charge of inventory, Arat held her responsible (despite it being Spencer's fault).
OMG, you're so right! Now I'll never be able to watch this episode again without being acutely aware of the exact same plot line. Juan, you basically just told me the Easter Bunny isn't real. lol! Just one more thing you learn as you get older that squashes the magic out of the event. jkwy. ;)
Poor Aaron, gets drug into that nasty water with the Olympic walker swim team, then gets his butt kicked for absolutely no reason. Then missed out on that amazing moment at the end. I've had days like that.
You held it together Lacey! I cry my eyes out every time I see Daryl and Rick hug. Fat Joey had Rick's python, and Daryl got it back. I cry even harder when he hands it back to Rick.
Amazing episode. Every time I see that look that Rick gives as Negan walks away at the end I question to myself how in the holy hell has Andrew Lincoln never won an Emmy!!!!
I love the excitement that Steve felt when Daryl handed Rick his gun back! After seeing the show so long ago, and wanting to relive that excitement. The only way I can is by seeing what I felt in other people’s reactions. So thank you both! I love you guys!
The ending of this episode was so amazing and gave me chills the first time seeing it. It was so awesome to see Rick ready to take the fight to the Saviors.
This was such a good mid-season finale! I love it so much. Especially the end with Rick and Daryl reuniting and then that hopeful music with all our people coming together to make a plan. I remember feeling so good after this episode and it still hits me the same way now. Let's go!
As ALWAYS , amazing reaction!! And yes Lacey, "we're a family" is what this episode was all about and all of what happened in this episode really did make Rick finally see that fighting is the only way. I just love y'all 💜🖤💜🖤
I really liked how fleshed out they made Lucille. Like it or not, she's a character in her own right. And obviously an emotional connection to someone from Negan's past, as well as a comfort to him now.
The end of this episode always gives me chills. The music, the characters reuniting, the determination - the audience feels so defeated and that one moment at the end gets you pumped up again. It's an excellent scene.
Mid-season finale! Yes! According to everyone in the comments for your reaction to “Swear,” Alanna Masterson (Tara) had just had a baby, so that would explain the big boobage. I admit, I got Bob flashbacks when Aaron went underwater. Loved Morgan setting Richard straight about Carol’s capabilities as a fighter. Spencer’s death is simultaneously gross, disturbing, satisfying (because fuck Spencer), and a little funny with Negan’s dialogue afterward. You guys have a very pretty cat. It’s good to see such a triumphant ending - the gang reuniting with Daryl at the Hilltop and Daryl giving Rick back his Colt Python. On the back of what happened to Aaron and with what Negan did this episode: do you think that Negan’s followers are as bad as or worse than Negan? I’m not willing to give Spencer a pass on him trying to throw Rick under the bus. This wasn’t him necessarily acting out of anger. This was a calculated move on his part. I mean, we see him practicing his greeting to Negan in the mirror. There was nothing Rick could do for Spencer to see his side. We see him bitching to Rosita about Rick giving half Alexandria’s stuff during the episode where The Saviors come by Alexandria the first time, and now we see him buddying up to Negan, telling him that he gets what he’s doing, Rick’s ego is out of control, and he [Spencer] can be the person Negan needs in charge. We’ve also seen him act like a spoiled brat previously - stealing supplies from the pantry when the walkers were heading for Alexandria, and that was while his mom was still alive. Afterwards, he STILL stole and hid guns and supplies. We didn’t get to know his brother Aiden as long, but he was an egotistical shit, too, and his ego cost lives. Aiden only admitted at his end that he and Nicholas were at fault for the people under their charge dying. If it weren’t the zombie apocalypse, Spencer and Aiden would have still been spoiled little shits probably using their mother’s clout to get out of multiple DUIs and hit and runs. They didn’t grow up when the apocalypse hit.
Poor Fat Joey. He seemed like he could have turned to the survivors side but Daryl had every reason to bash his head in like Negan did w/ Abe and Glenn and also b/c Fat Joey was also the one that left Daryls cell door open in episode 3 which led to Daryl getting beaten by some saviors and Fat Joey.
One of my episodes! The group's reunion and unifying to fight against Negan gives us such a feel good moment! This show mashed you feel EVERY POSSIBLE EMOTION. It's what makes it so dang good!
Wearing the absolutely perfect shirt, Steve! This episode made me cry at the end, what an incredibly beautiful reunion. R.I.P. Spencer and Olivia. The back half off this season, imho, is just brilliant. Prepare to experience emotions watching this show you've never experienced before!
fun fact Arat spelled backwards spells Tara. back in the day we all wondered if tara and arat would get together. also remember Arat wanted to kill Olivia in that other episode when the guns were missing. and NEGAN stopped it. this time he lets her kill whoever she wanted to.... i wonder if he knew she'd go for Olivia again?
This was a great episode. When Negan was shaving and had Judith and Carl with him, little adorable Judith looking puzzled and Carl looking pained...😆 that was my favorite. I loved the awkward spaghetti dinner scene too. You can hate Negan and what he did but he can still make you laugh. That’s why I think he’s such a great character because he isn’t a one note character; he has layers. I loved the scenes too at the end when Daryl and Rick were reunited 😍
The first half of this season is so hard, because it's just constant blow after blow against our heroes. The end of this mid-season finale is so uplifting and hopeful with our heroes finding their strength and courage again. And that Rick/Daryl hug makes me tear up every single time!
I've always absolutely loved the end of this episode. It's so uplifting and the polar opposite of the end of the season opener (even the music's an uplifting reworking of the same music). It was a great way to leave us for the mid-season break. As for the comment about Tara's Titties, the actress had indeed recently given birth and actually got a lot of inappropriate comments on Instagram about how much weight she'd gained. Thankfully, she hit back just as hard at them.
At least we know what day of the week it is. "I hereby declare we have spaghetti Tuesdays...every Wednesday. First, we have to find some spaghetti." - Hershel Greene

Idk if it says this in the show and just don’t remember but I think Rick decided to fight back not just because of what Michonne said but because he realized once Spencer and Olivia were killed that even if he follows their rules they still might kill Rick’s people. And that’s the whole reason he was following their rules in the first place. So why follow Negans rules to protect your people if he still kills your people.
The thing is that Spencer got himself killed Wich caused Rosita to shoot. Knowing Negan he would kill Spencer for trying to talk Negan to make himself the leader. Even though it sucked that he died due to Spencer's mom asking Rick to take care of him. Father Gabriel did talk Rosita down from shooting Negan but after seeing Spencer die she shot. That caused Olivia to die. it does seem to make Rick come into his senses though
