This is 100% one of the most accurate covers that actually captures the real Ai. I think that this is really how she was, how she thought. It surprisingly helped me understand one of the most complicated characters.
She isn't that much complicated, she just doesn't know what to do because of her traumatic past which is colliding with her loving present.
@@decriptedperson4516 What you said about her traumatic past and present colliding is true, but I'd like to agree to disagree on her not being complicated.
You see, I wrote this thinking about her actions not her mentality, or past, or the way she thought. Basically I'm talking about her as a character. What's complicated about her then? Well, it's simple to explain but harder to understand, and I apologise in advance if I'm unable to explain the following properly.
In the anime (haven't read the manga, if u have don't spoil pls), Ai Hoshino appears as an idol who is pretending to be someone who she's not. But then, who is Ai Hoshino really? As far as the anime has gone there doesn't really appear to any clue as to what she's really like deep inside. I would say she can be silly, but then again, we have no current idea of how deep her "Perfect Ai" really goes. Or if there's any hint of who she once was in her.
I'm fully aware of the fact that her role in the anime is currently purely for the plot. But it really doesn't feel like the anime of one of Aka Akasaka's manga would ignore the personality of such a vital character in the story. After all, when you think about all of what I just said: Isn't the whole point of Oshi No Ko to follow Aqua's mental journey? But the reason FOR his mental state is because of his mother, idol, and inspiration: Ai Hoshino.
Just saying, from Aqua's perspective, the only thing I think he really wants is to find out who the Real Ai actually is. Who is beloved idol is and that answer may decide the final answer to the current plotline: Will Aqua follow a descent into madness, or is there still a light in the dark for him?
(Damn, I feel like a film theorist or something rn, sorry for it being soo long but I hope you now understand why I don't take someone saying she's "simple". It feels kinda personal to me because.. I relate to her in some ways.. Anyways, thanks for reading and know that I didn't mean to offend you in any way if I possibly did in what I said above.)

Aqua knows both of herself, the one she shows on the media and the one she's showed to them as a mother and she is just like I stated a person who can't love because of her past but still wants to, it doesn't make sense but she's trying henceforth The Perfect Idol because she herself is a lie and also she hides as much as she can(ngl she sucks at hiding compared to their father)

Everything sounds great, but I'm most impressed at the wording and arrangement of the lyrics. They flow as natural as the native language unlike 99% of translated covers.
completely agree, all of the other version feel a little clunky. Even the (second) best one has its moments. But this is executed flawlessly. Extremely impressive.

i like how in the opening part of the first chorus, she sings in a first-person view, but in the opening part of the second chorus, she sings in a third person view (from the view of her idol group members!), really gives another layer of depth to the jealousy part

i literally screamed when i heard "Working day and nightly no one sweats like Aqua!" still gives it that feel of the work idols put in but instead of Ai being praised its Aqua, also with the added bonus of Ai directly complimenting her kids, as with Ruby's line!
"Ruby shining brightly in my eyes and in her blood!" ALSO HIGHLIGHTS HOW RUBY INHERITED THE 'IDOL GENE' FROM AI, WHILE ALSO SHOWCASING AI'S LOVE FOR RUBY!
"With a song and dance I can be spun into your Maria!" LOVE this line because it shows how idols are so often elevated to these divine pedestals (like the first line showcased in this comment!) this song truly shows this instead of subtle allegories like in the original song!
"Do you really think that you can beat my kind of love" I interpret this as a sort of light-hearted challenge to her kids, or maybe even to her idol group members, asking if they think they can handle the true idol life (in the case of her kids) or if they can truly shine as bright as she did (in the case of her fellow idols), but I think it's a question to her kids (with her kids & her in the background of the MV as this line plays)

combining both the new art & scenes from the old mv & SOME NEW PARTS ON ITS OWN gives it such a new but familiar vibe and AAGGHHH.
0:28 with the bunny sinking reminds me of the end of the original MV, where she dropped her bunny costume into the water. ITS SO GOOD
0:40 where the scene of Aqua reaching out, then it switching into pre-chorus Ai's scene makes it feel like Aqua is reaching out for Ai!
0:48 where Ai's looking at a star and she reaches up to grab it, and it switches into Ruby reaching for the same star but unable to grab it yet is SUCH A MASTERMIND CHOICE? its so beautiful showing how Ai was able to attain 'Perfect Idol Status' but Ruby is still on her journey, not yet reaching the star
in the first chorus. looking at Ai through a sea of glowsticks & then the shot of her in front of a crowd is SO PRETTY, especially after showing Ruby reaching for the same thing that Ai has
1:11 where Aqua falls and it switches to a shot from the original MV of Ai hugging her kids... thta means something. dont ask me what but it does (promise) (id never lie to you)
1:17 where Aqua and Ruby look at eachother and it shows the heart disintegrating is still such a good scene. ITS SO COOL
in the jealousy verse it still retains the vibe of the original MV but with an added charm/sparkle to it
and the post-chorus of Ai singing about idol life with the LAYERS... the LAYERS of ANIMATION... god, it gives so much DEPTH to the MV
2:18 of Aqua's line, where it shows the sort of clock-like blue in the background gives familiarity from the original MV (same with Ruby's line!)
with the line "I'll fulfill my promise to you." with the shot of Ruby reaching for Ai's star, (yes I know i've talked about this before) is just SO COOL?
and i just realized "This is real for once in my life." with the shot of Ai with her two kids...
the ending shot of Ruby and her band members entering the stage for the first time, along with the shot of Aqua with BOTH stars in his eyes (despite them being black) as well as Ruby with both the stars is just SO COOL?

I love the small detail in the lyrics when the beat slows down, in the first verse its "Being like, being loved is a thing I've never known" But in the second verse it becomes "Is a thing I'll never know" I dont know if this is intentional but it shows a lot about Ai's character

I've always liked the contrast between the "idolish stage performance" vibes from the chorus and the more mellow part when talking about how Ai has never known love and I feel that this cover in particular shines even brighter in that regard. From the visuals to the voice, it really gives the feeling that you're on a concert, sometimes broken off by the more bittersweet and almost lonely sentiments.
All in all, I think this cover works really well, especially with the topics of "the flashy show business with a dark side unknown to the public" that Oshi no ko in gereal displays

I would at least like to mention that YOASOBI did put a lot of work into making their English lyrics sound close phonetically to their original Japanese lyrics. (Like "daremo ga" and "that emotion". Despite not meaning the same, they _sound_ the same. This is seen all over the lyrics)
Otherwise though, yeah, you can tell it's just English applied to a Japanese song. I notice Japanese artists often tend to ignore flow with specifically how words are pronounced with stress (like the difference between "présent" [gift] and "presént" [to show]). They usually just put the words there based on amount of syllables alone. It works with Japanese, but not always with English.
