As a professional clarinetist myself he was my hero as a teenager. In high school in 1968 I took my date home (both clarinetists in HS band) and put on the Nielsen concerto with NY Phil and we sat on a couch with the clarinet music in our hands following along with the record. Outstanding. At his peak he was one of the best.

Not my cup of tea. And I don't have to defend that. Just my personal taste. I hope UA-cam allows me to say that but unfortunately the Clarinet BBoard doesn't.

Not a fan of his sound. Great technique, but not the most gorgeous tone.

Edward Batchelor it’s a tone that doesn’t translate the best over UA-cam. Nowadays, that matters. So you have a lot more clarinetists with very dark sounds that are much more pleasant when out to a mic. Unfortunately, the result is something that sounds quite lifeless in person, especially in a concert hall with an orchestra. Funny enough, non musicians and general audiences ALWAYS prefer the brighter sounding clarinetists. The liveliness is just more interesting. We clarinetists tend to want a darker sound, but that darker sound tends to make audiences yawn and fall asleep of boredom!
