    I had a cat who sounded a lot like Hazel when we gave her baths. Often telling us "No". But we just kept telling her "yes". She lived to 19 years old proving that taking a bath wasn't the death sentence she made it out to be.

      Only one of our cats with long orange and white hair, her for the life of her refused to groom herself, had to be washed. Thankfully we started when she was a kitten but the first few times she would make this quiet "mamaaa" sound. Ugh broke my heart but I would always tell her "well if you would learn to clean yourself like all the other cats". Later on she gave in and would purr during her baths. I since then have stuck to short hairs

      19 is a great age for a cat. I’ve had 3 live to be 20 or 21, but those last couple years were touch and go, it was difficult to know if they were still feeling okay. 19 is the perfect old age for a cat I think. Bless you for giving them a great life (except for all those baths, you meanie lol).

      I can't believe Vanessa was even able to *find* her claws underneath all that fur.

    • @EmmaVB82
      @EmmaVB82 Рік тому +9

      @@VanityDivinedI did all the research in advance of getting my cats as kittens last May, and worked up from just briefly touching their paws in passing to holding their paws for a second to extending a claw by gently pressing on their paw pad in the right spot, to eventually trimming all the front claws (with the small and quiet Necoichi scissor-style nail clippers rather than one of the spring-loaded serious clippers like Vanessa uses)! 🎉(and I can only assume they’re grinding down their back claws by running around like lunatics and using them as brakes on my laminate floors and rugs, plus climbing the scratching pole/cat tower, because they’re never pointy and sharp!)
      We’ve had some regressions though (probably because I am personally bad at routine and consistency so it’s a real challenge to develop that for my cats) and now they both tend to get annoyed at me trying to handle their claws in any way, and will pull their paw back and curl it up underneath them, no matter how gently and soothingly I approach them!
      Really my only chance now is when they’re asleep (but not TOO asleep, because you don’t want them to be having chasing dreams and suddenly jerk away!), and I have to verrrry slooooowly part the toefluffs with my finger and the clippers to see all of the claw, try not to put any (or only a tiny bit of) pressure on any part of the paws or claws; sometimes by coming at them from a weird angle (like sitting on the floor while they’re lying on my office chair, raising up the seat so they’re above me and to get a better angle, then stroking them while saying reassuring things to go back to sleep and to make out like it’s a totally normal thing for them to be going up while I’m just sitting on the floor); then clip, stroke, repeat!
      I got 4 claws carefully trimmed on one cat this morning before he was just fully mad at me interrupting his sleep and wouldn’t let me get anywhere near the rest, and was grumping and swatting his tail (and I’m a big sap and didn’t want to disrupt him, especially because he was snuggled up all right next to my pillows… even though for 5 of the last 7 nights he has personally disrupted me, either by using me in bed as a trampoline to leap off in chase of his sister, or has tried to destroy the place and knock over boxes and other things to get my attention, or has been just plain yelling at me to get up and play with him… all at around 6am, which is NOT my awake time!
      His sister is way worse though, and her claws are almost all fully grown now and causing her problems and some distress (getting stuck on everything from the litter mat to the scratching posts to the cat towers to the window screens)… but she’s a much lighter sleeper than her brother and is more likely to sleep either with her paws curled up underneath her, or in an awkwardly inaccessible place!
      (Also, every time I try and sneakily trim my cats’ claws when they’re sleeping, I’m reminded of when I was a kid and my long-suffering mum would sneak in to my room at night to remove splinters from my feet and hands via torchlight while I was asleep! I don’t have kids of my own but I think I’m getting a small taste of what it might be like 😂)

      If I understand that crate design properly, it's a "high security" design that is intended to keep an very angy critter from rushing out the door and attacking your arm when you open it.
      Instead of a door hinged on one side and swinging open, it's just a cage wall that's fixed on the bottom shell and releasable from the top - when you pull the tabs in the middle, it releases from the top and you pull the bottom out. This provides a shield to the front that keeps your hands away from the door, keeps the critter from lunging straight out, and allows a helper to come in from the top with a blanket. Or so I'm told.

    I use that crate for my cat that HATES the vet due to a blood disease he contracted from a flea right after we adopted him. They slide forward. Your suppose to pull the sides in then slide the entire blue section forward. It's to avoid having to zip up or close a normal gate. Super helpful when your furry friend is super pissed about his/her bloodwork and trying to murder anything coming close to the front of their carrier.
    Edit for the small discussion going on in the comments: This carrier is not used very widely. I had it recommended by a vet tech as my cat who is normally very docile and lapcat type, became a demonic entity intent on murdering every person in the clinic due to his bi weekly blood draws for 2 months. But other than the tech who recommended it, not even the vet or other techs knew how it worked and had to be walked through it. I later had that initial carrier broken when we tried to kennel my cat for a trip and the worker tried to brute force the gate open and snapped it. Was my fault for not instruction on proper usage. So I can totally understand why they don't know how it works here. Great for getting a uncooperative animal in and out of the carrier, but very odd to work till you use it once.

    Why do people get long hair cats and dogs if they won't maintain them? Urine soaked mats... Unacceptable. Especially on such a tolerant cat. A sani shave isn't expensive. Brushing your own cat is free. A simple brush out at the groomers is cheap. It's infuriating and one of the many things I don't miss about grooming.

    • @dianapippin6658
      @dianapippin6658 6 місяців тому +1

      I was thinking the exact same thing. I have had long haired cats most of my life and I combed or cut out matted hair myself. I never let it get bad. I bathe my cats and trim their claws I even occasionally brush their teeth which is a major fight. Long haired cats require maintainance which apparently many people aren't doing and the cat pays the price. Inkie my long haired black kitty girl she was a modest lady and she HATED when I trimmed her rear end. She kept her tail down until it grew out. All my kitties would have been mortified having their hair shaved. I feel for these cats.
