My Curiosity is Satisfied! Rosa Studio Watercolor Review

- I have been curious about the Rosa Studio line of paint ever since I tried their affordable professional range. They went on sale for 50% off so I bought a set to review: amzn.to/3MrkL5Z (at the time of filming they were 40% off, affiliate link used)
There have been a lot of sales on the professional line, Rosa Gallery as well: amzn.to/46SAToF and I recommend them over the "studio" line because they are much better quality and only a little more expensive.
Rosa Studio Watercolor review. These are the studio, or student-grade paints i am reviewing today: amzn.to/3MrkL5Z Ignore the word "professional" on the product heading. There is no regulation on that word and it is not accurate for this set.
Pros:
Price (I got it for 50% off)
Color selection is nice
Pigment info included
Lightfast info included
Colors mix well
The colors are strong and transparent
Lifts well
Glazes fine
No shiny spots with thicker layers
Cons:
The paint is thick and gloopy
The paint doesn't flow well in wet-in-wet
Several colors are fugitive (not lightfast)
No mixing area as the paint is in a cardboard box.
Bottom line,
Save up a few more dollars and go with the Rosa Gallery line of paint, it is the more professional choice and not much more in price. Or go with the Paul Rubens 24 full pan set. It has similar colors but it comes in a tin with a mixing area and the pans are larger, also the paint is a better quality in my opinion. amzn.to/3ZVfOaV

Thank you reviewing these. I have been wondering about them. True the Rosa Gallery line gorgeous and are my fav
Glad you like them!
good to know Lindsay! I'm fully satisfied with my artist grade Rosa! As a matter of fact, the LAST thing I need is more paint LOL. Just the other day I pulled out my old, old Da Vinci paints and after fiddling around with it I thought 'wow...these paints are fabulous...why am I not using these?' I had forgotten 😕I will never use up all my artist grade paint in my lifetime. So I'd better get to slinging some paint!
Love “ so I better get slinging some paint”. I agree. That will be my motto this year! ❤😂
Same! 😂❤
I really shouldn’t buy any more paint 😅🙈
Also had/have to pace myself to not buy all those lovely travel cases and pretty tins out there 😅
Hullo Lindsay, I have not noticed that there was a difference between the Rosa paints! I thought it was just marketing! Thank you for sharing this information regarding the difference between the studio line and the artist grade paints.
I have considered buying some of the paints from Ukraine just to support their economy, yeah I know that one purchase is not going to be a major influence, yet if you drop enough drips in a bucket it will fill up! I suggest that we uy the professional grade paint and create some paintings and let people know that you are creating beautiful artworks with paints from Ukraine! Thank you for sharing this with us, Please take care of yourself, getting better soon is a goal to shoot for!
Thank you so much for your support!
There’s no huge or tiny purchases, even 1 cent is incredibly matter for us. Even one kind word is highly appreciated, I literally crying right now because I didn’t expect that someone would help by buying Ukrainian products. That is so cool and heartwarming!
Compared to some of the really poor quality paint marketed for beginners, doodlers, and little kids at higher prices, the Rosa Studio is a good deal. The hard WC tabs that look like a bunch of opaque, fruity Tums in a decorative box? Same or higher price range junk, and people don’t know the difference. The Rosa Studio looks better on camera than the Sonnet, IMHO. I liked the old Cotman for bargain lightfastness and the practice with “real” pigments. Not sure about it now; haven’t tried it. 🎉Thanks for an excellent review, Lindsay!🎉
I just got goosebumps watching and listening to your drone footage! Your channel is my favorite!!!!!!! Love, Health and Happiness this New Year Brock Family!!!!!!
Aww, thanks!
Oh hey this is my watercolor! Thanks for reviewing it! I was going to buy Winsor&Newton's 12-color travel palette but the shop gave me this Rosa and a nice watercolor pad for the same price, so I bought them instead. Sadly I never found Rosa in local shops again, I feel lucky to have it.
Hope you enjoy it!
Thank you for all the reviews you do. You are enjoying to listen to discuss paint and your content is amazing.
Thank you so much!
Happy New Year Lindsay and I hope you are back to yourself soon. I hope to get back in the art groove this year and look forward to lots of inspiration from you. You give so much and ask nothing in return. You are a kind, loving person with a lovely sense of humour and I enjoy all your videos even reviews of products not available to me 😂.
Thanks so much! I am feeling a lot better!
I’m all about the whoooosh when it comes to dropping in paint. There’s just something mesmerizing about it. Happy New Year! 🎊
Happy new year!
I have the Rosa Gallery monopigment set and I absolutely love it.
Sonnet did came up with the same set in a metal case. And it's available on Amazon.
This is a very thorough review! Thank you Lindsay.🤗
You are so welcome!
Wierdly i enjoy a milky not that great watercolor to paint with on occasion, i think it gets me nostalgic ❤😊
Yes, me too! I love getting out my school grade watercolors, along with all kinds of other lower quality art supplies every now and then. It does feel really nostalgic. And interestingly, when I'm having art block, getting out my cheapest supplies has helped me get started many times before.
Happy New Year! Thank you for your inspiration and generosity of sharing over the years Lindsey! Feel better! ❤
Thank you! You too!
🎉happy New Year, Lindsay! Thanks for this review. I appreciate you using the paints as far back as October to inform your review. Lovely paintings too. I have Rosa Gallery tubes. All monopigments, and they are gorgeous 😍 - and everything I need. It us always fun to see where your curiosity takes you. Hope you are feeling better!!
Thanks, I am!
I have this one. After that one I bought the student grade 24 set (“Rosa Studio”, cardboard box) and the 21 mono pigmented artist grade one (“ Rosa Gallery”, blue tin the size of the classic 24 halpan tin with 3rd row instead of space for brush) and put the 24 2,5ml pans in that tin without the insert. Needed to fiddle a bit to put them all in there but wanted to let people know that the 24 pans of this size CAN fit the normal standard tin boxes!
Good to know!
Lindsay…. I’m old (and apparently senile)… I asked you to do a review of the Rosa Studio… not remembering that you already had done one. AND I WATCHED IT! OMG! How embarrassing! Anyway… I got them, mostly to support Ukraine… I have two Rosa Gallery sets. I SO appreciate the review!
😆
Thanks for the thorough review. Happy New Year!
Happy new year!
I hope you are feeling better! Happy New Year ❤❤❤
Beautifully done!
Thank you very much!
Hi, Lindsay. Happy New Year. Thank you for your video.🎉.❤.
Glad to see one of your videos on New Years Day! I had nothing going on today! You are the best 👌!
Happy new year!!
I personally think that the Rosa studios would be good for coloring book people who enjoy working with watercolors.
Good thinking, the thicker paint will work in coloring books!
Thats what i noticed about the white knights 35 pan set. But the granulating sets arent like that, as far as the thickness goes anyway. Maybe its because they used the more lightfast pigments. But the purple ultramarine i was very impressed by it rewet like a dream and it was a very pigmented brushload
Happy New Year, Lindsay!
Interesting review, I didn't know Rosa had a student rang. It's a shame about the quality as the Rosa gallery 21 sets are about £50 on UK amazon now.
Yikes!
The thickness and way they move remind me of the gansi tambi paints by kuretake. I know that those are a different kind of paint but that’s why it is surprising to me how similar they are.
You're right!
these look so fun, Happy New Year ☺☺
Same to you!
Happy New Year , excellent review , really makes up my mind as to which Rosa one I like , but the Sonnet is tempting me , I feel paint acts different on different paper so that’s always fun to experiment with , thanks so much for your review 😊
Happy new year!
Thanks for the review! If I could get them for 10 bucks, I might be tempted but they're not even available on Amazon UK. I have a lot of the Gallery paints, so I really don't need them. They might be good for beginners who don't want to have to deal with the Cadmium and Cobalt paints yet, though. Hope you're feeling better and Happy New Year!
I'm on the mend!
As I recall, dextrin (a starch) is a common ingredient in student grade watercolors. It kind of doubles as binder and filler. Some brands use more than others.
I like the Artist grade Rosa that I bought on huge sale. However, the water gets extremely gray, extremely quickly, which tells me that the binder is a little cheap. I use it all the time though, but change my water a lot. I would never pay full price for either artist or student quality Rosa. I'd probably opt for Van Gogh, if given the choice with Rosa, honestly, just for the water clarity. The best thing that Rosa ever did was make me realize how awesome full pans are. I now pour all my paints into full pans.
Do use 2 water buckets, one for clean and one for dirty water?
@@thefrugalcrafter Yep, I have one of the divided water pots. The dirty water gets grey really quickly with the Rosa's. It was something Miranda Watson pointed out as well.
@@PaintSplash5 Oh, I'll have to look out for that. I picked up several sets when they were on super sale recently but haven't played with them yet. Thanks for the tip.
Happy New Year!!🎉🎉
Interesting video. I’m watching out of curiosity. A few months ago I purchased two Rosa Gallery palettes due to the great price (approximately $23 each and each palette containing 21 full pans). No more watercolors for me until Thanksgiving earliest!
Oh wow!
LOL, I got those same pallettes! One of them has a fourth empty row at the bottom for more paint pans. I also picked up a couple of the 24 pans in a cardboard box for replacements and a couple of different colors. They were only $13. Good times!
@@windywednesday4166 yes one of the palettes has an empty fourth row. You got a great deal on the 24 full pans in the cardboard box!
10.00 would be worth it to me .i am going to play with my cotman now, hope you are well ,i would love a review on my inktense xl blocks im loving them but need to learn more ,i have some pink satin fabric to paint on ,love you ,happy new year
Will do!
I think the Paul Ruben's ver looks better than Rosa's, BUT neither are artist quality so in the end either set works imo. Just pick whichever one is cheapest at the time. 🤷♀
Paul Ruben's student paint is Mailiang/Pretty Excellent which is a fun set.
would love to see a video on White Nights vs Yarka. I got the White Nights granulating and love them, I have a set of old school Yarka full pans, was impressed with the White Nights performance but am not needing anymore too similiar to pay that much watercolor sets.
They are the same paint if you are speaking of the full pans. They use the yards trade name in USA and white nights in Europe.
That satiated my curiosity as well. To me the Sonnet paint seems to behave very "professionally" pigment wise.
It does!
Thank you for the informative review.
So sad the full pans from Paul Rubens is not available 😢.
Hi Lindsay, do you happen to know off hand a website or other places where people can learn more about paint numbers and what they mean. I know that py means paint yellow. But you know so much about each of the pigments, their properties, like with madder colors, and was wondering where one could go to learn more about them. Or perhaps you could do a future video on pigments, or perhaps you have done a video in the past about them? Anyway, informative video this is. Thank you.
Try handprint or art is creation color pigment database
When you first showed the paint pallet, they looked like a smaller version of himi gouache really shinny and jelly looking until you put your brush in…
It's really good to know about that gummy texture on these paints, because this set had caught my eye. I have come to really not like that texture.
On another note, I was watching a product video done by Jerry's, I think, awhile back. The product (Bee paper maybe?) had a "Studio quality" designation and the guy talked about it -- said that studio quality was somewhere between student and artist grades. I would be interested in learning more about this -- I don't know if companies have been doing this all along or if I am just now noticing that this is even a thing.
I was also curious about your use of the word "cellulose" to describe a quality of paper. I took it to likely mean a wood pulp as opposed to a cotton pulp or a cotton rag. Since cotton is a cellulose fiber, maybe the word cellulose has evolved to a particular meaning in the art world? Like Kleenex is used for the word tissues, no matter the brand. I dunno -- I just get curious about this stuff.
That's exactly right, cellulose paper is made of wood. Studio paints are student grade but not children's grade.
@@thefrugalcrafter Thanks for the clarifications!
Thanks Lindsay 💜
You are so welcome!
Hi Lindsey, love your videos. You are getting me painting again! Question for you - I was gifted a few watercolor ‘Prisma artist quality watercolor pans’. I definitely prefer my tube colors but these small pan sets are great to use in my journal. My question is what an I do to keep the pans from moving? I know they fit loosely to be able to replace the pans as I use them up but having the pans move around is driving me nuts lol
You need tobend the metal clips in while the pans are removed and then snap them in. I did a video here: ua-cam.com/video/eQI4LlSW7x8/v-deo.htmlsi=0IjnTuDe8Lrxsj16
Thanks for the review! I'm a huge fan of these. Fun fact - "Rosa" means "dew" in Ukrainian and is pronounced "ro-suh" with an "s" sound :)
Did you guys steal these paints from St. Petersburg? They look exactly like their paints. And Rosa is a very new brand compared to St. Petersburg. And they started making their watercolors in 2018 according to their website. Makes me wonder...
Great video! Thanks for sharing❤
Thanks for watching!
A good rule of thumb I remember hearing that any reg pigment under 108 is not presumed lightfast
What do you mean? Red pigment beginning with PR? Pv19 is a beautiful pink red but technically a violet. PR101 is very lightfast (English red, Indian red) it would be easy to remember. I'll have to check that out.
@@thefrugalcrafter Yes, I mean red pigments (PR pigments) to be specific, i.e. with pigments such as PR 83.
Dang, I forgot about PR 101 (because I usually think it to be brown). I will change my rule of thumb down to 'red pigments before 101", thank you.
Interesting that the student grade are so close to the artist grade in price. Especially with those pigment choices, you'd think they could bring down the price! Student paints are often made so that they don't flow much (for better control) and easy to lift (as it's assumed you'll make mistakes). So, I can't ding them on those points. Of course cellulose paper is also often easier to lift from, because it's often harder sized. I agree with another commentor, they probably used a lot of dextrin. Holbein also uses dextrin, but only a bit, and not in all the colors -- but to give them the signature Holbein feel/look. When they use too much in watercolor or gouache, the paint becomes unpleasantly goopy!
That's for sure, I'm glad I only paid $10!
Lol. When you compared them to Crayola Washables that's all I needed to hear.😅 ...but thanks for reminding me that I need to clean out my Crayola Washables set so I can reuse the pan. Absolutely the worst watercolors I have ever used and the only ones I've ever thrown away.
Glad I could help!
Thx for the updated review. I purchased these watercolors a few years ago when you first introduced them on your channel.
First to Comment!! Happy new year!!
Same to you!
Its so much fun to see you still use the save the wrapper on the paper tip hehehe.
Always!
I really appreciate this review. I just wished I had seen it before I bought my Rosa studio paints. Actually, I grabbed the wrong one!! 😒
Maybe you van return them
Happy Ew year Lindsay. Hope you are okay. 🎉
I'm on the mend!
Happy New Year everyone! 🎉
Good evening Lindsay.i noticed you haven’t posted in a few days, just checking that covid did not hit you worse. Pray all is well.
My voice was not up to par and I didn't have any extra videos I could post. I'm still kicking tho:)
Will you recommend a brand and specific palette to get the colors in lilly pulitzer art? I’m obsessed with that color palette but not good at mixing paint.
I'm not familiar with that artist
@@thefrugalcrafter she is a famous clothing designer and artist.
FYI: I was wondering if you were taking a break from making videos because I wasn't getting notifications. When I checked your channel I found I had been unsubscribed:( This probably isn't the first comment you have received about this, so I am just adding my comment so you know YT is still messing around with viewers' subscriptions and notifications.🙄 HAPPY NEW YEAR ❤
Oh no, the answer for letting me know!
@thefrugalcrafter On another matter, I just bought another set of the Mjello Mission Gold Pure Pigment 15 ml tubes which I first bought a while back based on your recommendation in an older video. It's currently on sale for $60.90 (instead of $81.80) today (it was $59.90 yesterday). So I just wanted to pass the deal along to you and your viewers. It is the one sold by Sehoon and titled "Mijello Mission Gold Class Pure Pigment Watercolor MWC-1524P, 15ml x 24 Colors (7 Milliliter x 2ea)" . No telling how long the price will last. and Waveon is still selling the exact same set for $81.80. It includes a tube of cobalt blue, which by itself, is probably worth about $15 and a tube of PR254 which is one of my favorite reds. All the colors are very good and most are transparent. Except for the yellow ochre PY 42 being a dull dud, and the usual issue of Korean names for pigments being somewhat different than the names we usually assign to the same pigment numbers, I highly recommend this set for the outstanding quality and value. Hope this helps someone else who has a limited budget:)
@@dao8805 Oh, I just got that set too! Same price, but when I checked again it had gone up another $2. It's a good deal.
@@windywednesday4166 Glad you got it before the price increased. It's still a great deal even with the $3 increase, but it looks like people need to act fast to make sure they get it before up goes up further:)
These are so similar to the Nevskaya Palitra paints. I'm starting to wonder if they stole the formulas from Nevskaya or something (even the packaging is very similar). After all, this brand is pretty new compared to St. Petersburg (Nevskaya Palitra). ANd they started making watercolors in 2018(!). Either way, I'm staying away from these for now. I love my White Nights and Sonnets and they will last me for a long time still.
Geographically they are close so it might come down to materials available and where the paint makers were trained.
Maybe. Did you by any chance ever compare those two side by side? I would love to see how similar they are in performance. The WN and the Rosa Gallery ones I mean.@@thefrugalcrafter
@Oozaru85 I haven't but the Rosa paints feel softer and seem to wear down a bit faster. The yarka are a bit more translucent it seems as well but that might be down to the colors I have.

Hi Lindsay! I just wanted to let you know that referring to Ukraine as "the Ukraine" is incorrect. I don't mean to be a drag, but I wanted to bring it up and explain because i think it's important! Ukraine was referred to by Russia as "the Ukraine" during the Soviet Union when it was under heavy oppression by Russia. Referring to Ukraine in such a way implies that there is no independent Ukraine and that they still belong to Russia. A lot of people don't know about this important distinction, but in a time of war where Ukraine is fighting to survive against Russia's powers, I think educating people, about even this small detail is crucial. Sorry to bring the heaviness to the video, but I just wanted to let you know
I also think it's great to let anyone who sees this comment and might not know, know!
I think sometimes it's a slip of the tongue. For much of my life everyone referred to it as 'the Ukraine' (I'm 69) I still have to remind myself to drop the 'the'. I certainly don't mean any disrespect as I truly am heartbroken about the struggles of this country. ❤
@flychk1229 That's totally understandable! I'm only 20, so I've referred to it as Ukraine my entire life, so it comes very naturally to me. And I'm sure most people don't mean any harm! But a reminder is always good! 💕 And I hope that if anyone watching this video wasn't aware, that they'll see my comment!
Good to know. I was unaware. Thanks.
Lindsay did say "Ukraine" the 2nd time she referred to the country in the video.
Thanks Lindsay!
You are so welcome!
