I think the 'bonus tip' at around the four minute mark was the most important!--> which is why I wear knickers...it's fun to ENJOY GOLF and not be hard on myself...Golf is not my job, and I like playing...it's serious, but I like to ham it up a teeny bit, too
Take some lessons too! Golf is SOOOO much more fun when you have a couple of fundamentals. You’d be surprised how much more fun golf will be for yourselves!
As a newly minted golfer, I am a huge fan of your content Rick. My mate (15 years deep into golf) put me onto you when I said I was interested in joining my local club, I have since been glued to your content as part of my journey towards my first handicap, making sure I have lots of fun along the way. You're a credit to the sport and I'm sure I'm one of many who is encouraged by your continued efforts. Keep up the good work mate 👏
Rick from watching your videos I’ve went from shooting in the 90s and a highest of 97 and struggling to break 90, to shooting 81 two weeks in a row. Thank you so much for making these videos and helping us regular golfers
Great tips. I would add taking lessons. I learned two things from my last lesson - the importance of lag in my swing - wan't even aware of that until I was videotaped, and, as you mentioned, the importance of lag in my putts - I am now two putting much more consistently and even making some outside of 10 feet, but I am now less focused on draining 30 footers and just making a good, solid putt.
Great advice Rick as always. Although I love your Pod Casts and break 75's I just feel your instructional videos are so relatable to the club golfer and help us realize "that golf is hard" without being too hard on yourself. Thanks again for providing the best golf entertainment on YoutTube, class .
5:40 An old pro at a golf club i actually kinda started playing at, i used to just join and watch my grandpa play, had a good way to train putting, im not sure if others do it but i find that it works. Find a distance (maybe 20 feet in front of you or to the hole, close your eyes and try different strengths, you will find a strength that works and be able to do it without needing to look.
I’m a new golfer I’ve been playing for 4 months and I absolutely got addicted I’ve watched almost all your videos and love when you play with guy. This did help me a lot I usually shoot 10 over but I’ve been putting in a lot of work for all new players you can get pretty good if you put in the time and effort. Now I’m trying to break 82 which is 10 over on my course love the content keep it up Rick!!
Number 6 Rick ... People dont care to know the truth and thats why they dont get better , first thing they do is blame the clubs . I am a scratch golfer because I practice and experiment hard in the 40 years I have played , and when I hit great shots , the guys I play with , sometime strangers , always ask what brands clubs I am playing , every time ...lol I always say its not the clubs .This was good content and cant disagree with anything your saying ...Thanks Rick ... Heres 10 more tips I will add for beginners out there 1) Golf is hard , it looks easy but its not and it will take you years to develop your game , accept it ... Take lessons and get the basics right from the beginning , quit guessing 2) Quit thinking the driver is key , its not , chipping and putting means more and iron play comes in third . 3) Accuracy trumps distance every time 4) Your swinging too hard , think smooth and easy 5) Play a premium ball , it matters ... Buy used balls if the price puts you off , just make sure there premium 6) Dont practice on mats if possible , the game is played on grass , big difference 7) Try to play with good players as much as possible and ask questions , dont be intimidated by somebody better than you ... We love helping you learn , at least i do 8 ) Learn to hit trouble shots from bad lies , embrace it , practice it ... It happens even if your a good player 9) If your not playing well that day , smile , your learning . Leave anger at home , it will kill your round even worse every time 10 ) Forget the bad rounds or shots or shanks .... It will get into your head and could stunt your growth for weeks
Great tip from Rick - don't be too hard on yourself. I used to get annoyed for days after if I'd had a bad round but now I just take a fatalistic approach to golf and enjoy myself. Let's face it, it beats work.
1:56 Northern California is amazing with the different types of courses are up here. I’m very grateful I got into golf but my brother introduced me to it in Southern California and the California desert which is much different than Nor Cal and my development has been up mainly up north. I recently had a major golf outing with my brother who got me into the game along with my cousins who got into the game on their own and through using Ricks tips and varying the types of golf courses, my family was extremely impressed with my game and my family is very hard to impress.
Just started golfing last week and your videos have been HUGELY helpful and fun to watch. Thanks to you my second round of golf ever I was only 18 over with a birdie chip in from 25 yards out. Appreciate you Rick!
Really have to agree with the playing of different courses. I play fairly well round my own course but you get to a point where you hardly have to think about your next club because you play the same way each time. As soon as I go and play a few different courses and face different hazards, lengths, wind directions, I come back to my own course feeling I'm now better equipped as a golfer as I now have more shots in my arsenal.
100% agree Rick about lag putting - it is incredibly important to the bogey golfer. Most times you won't make the green in regulation off the stick, especially on the tougher stroke holes... you're going to be on the par 4 green in three and the par five green in four, so if you get good at lag putting, you'll almost guarantee yourself a net par every time - and when you do make GIR, you give yourself a shot at net birdie.
I'm really bad about being tough on myself and getting mad when I mishit the ball. I work hard to get better, but you're right that you have to keep it in perspective.
I love how Rick is always trying to help people improve scores. He's helped me go from shooting 97ish to 90 even. I haven't been playing golf that long but it's nice seeing new ways to improve my game and try to get better. I've always wanted to go professional while playing the sport that I love. I know that won't happen, but it's nice to drop shots and play better. Next goal is to save up to get away from my Nike driver. It's the tour edition so it's kinda hard for me to use. Slice almost every time. Been watching Rick for 5 years now trying to fix it
Same for me. I picked up golf in August '22 and my first round I shot 136. My last round in January '23 was 94 and that's due in large part to these videos.
I have the Nike tour driver and its great. I sliced with it but found I was swinging across my body, once I got that right I'm bombing like 300 yard drives, it's a great club
Am about to take up golf at 46... And picking up my clubs this weekend. I plan to hit the driving range a couple of times a week for the next month or so... Take some lessons and then see how it goes....wish me luck..
Rick, you're the best. I used that same putting tip from your video with the great putting coach. It has absolutely helped eliminate my unnecessary three putts and actually started holing some more on the first putt. Thanks so much for your videos!
Thank you Rick Shiels, your content, information, advise, perspective, and passion for this silly game is apparent. It’s so enjoyable to come on to UA-cam and watch your videos. I’m in Alaska our golf courses are under feet of snow, we are eagerly awaiting for spring and to be able to get our 5 months of playing in this summer. So being able to enjoy your content in the off season is very nice. I’m starting to build up excitement and anticipation. I’m 52 years old and just played my first summer of golf last summer, I started out shooting around 120 on a par 72 coarse. My goal was to break 100, I I did a couple months in, my best score was a 93, this year I want to break 90, and a personal best of 85 would be great. I’m shooting old second hand clubs, if I can start shootings in the 80’s I may treat myself to a fitting and get proper clubs. Thank you again and God bless
Though new clubs don’t significantly make you better, I shaved over 10 strokes off my game switching from clubs that were more suited to my handicap. I used to consistently finish >100 and since the day I bought my G425 irons I have yet to see a 100 score. Some in the 80s, most in the low 90s. I would also add, take your time. Think your shots through and keep your eye on the ball.
My favourite thing is going out in really high winds and playing during those days. I love playing around with different shot shapes and trying things I wouldn’t normally
Last year, I went out and played one of the most beautiful courses I've ever seen in-person, TPC Deere Run. Easily the most humbling experience I've ever had was when I hit it into the rough and it was almost impossible to find the ball, let alone trying to hit it out. But I'd do it all over again, without hesitation
Hi Rick. Love your videos and tips! They have helped my game tremendously! One request, please take lefties into account when describing shots, especially with hitting on a slope. Most of us have common sense and know to swap the direction the ball will go, but a simple mention of this will really help the lefties out there. perhaps it can be described as toward you or away instead. Please keep the videos coming!
I remember playing on my home course in an absolute gale and rain. Was absolutely brilliant. Great fun and a real test on the easiest holes. Was like playing a completely different course. Fantastic and great fun
I would add to that tip about lag putting: if you are putting up hill, it's better to leave the ball short and give yourself a 3-foot uphill putt for par than running it by and having a downhill comebacker.
Well done, Sir! Golf is a thinking man's game and learning how to think about what you are doing is as imprtant as the doing of it. This video is a sure example of that idea.
Rick I’ve been watching your videos for a while now. Coming from a guy with not so much free time I appreciate videos like this that you make you have helped my golf game EXTREMELY TY! Rick your great! I’ll practice those slopes for sure.
Great tips. For us lefties, when desbribing the ball going "left" or "right" is there a more neutral way to phrase things to avoid translation? I know. It's not *that big of a deal* in the grand scheme, but knowing the ball will move "away" from me rather than "to the left for a righty striker" makes things a lot easier to process. :) I LOVE THIS CHANNEL!
I enjoyed the video especially about wind. Now I know how to factor it in better. Especially against the wind. I actually discussed with a friend when playing and had seen a video about the subject but it was getting too complicated. So I thought enough as I can’t have any thoughts that allow not to trust your decision. Commit and do it. The way you explained is very simple. Keep the videos coming.
What helped me when i started out about 1.5 years ago is litterly look at the game per shot. I had the bad habbit on focussing on the complete hole and forcing myself to take to many risks trying to minmize the amount of shots. Had massive improvements after just taking it one shot at a time and purely focussing on my current shot and not the next or last one.
Brilliant 5 tips !! Cannot stress it enough to have fun. Loads of people don’t realize that there are literally millions of other golfers out there whacking their balls around a course somewhere and that it 99.9999% doesn’t matter what you shoot if you just have fun.
I imagine lots of people will mention this but my #1 tip would be to take lessons. I started aged 11 or 12 with a big group of kids every Saturday morning who got about 30 seconds of the pro's time each. Which is basically nothing and as such I developed nothing but bad habits. I could still hit a ball, I still broke 100 several times but I didn't get lessons until almost 25 years later. And it's like playing a different sport. You don't even need many lessons, 3 or 4 will do but make sure you practice a lot between each one. Really embed what you were told so that it's second nature before having the next lesson or you'll feel overloaded with things to focus on. There's no rush, you've got years ahead to play golf so get the basics right.
Man Shielsy.. I’ve been watching your videos since you and Pete just had a few thousand subscribers when I was first getting into golf. Back before the beard 😂. You’ve always been a great ambassador for the game for new players getting started and it makes me happy to see you at nearly 2.5 million subscribers now. Cheers mate!
Love your advice on playing different courses. You could be the best in the world on your course and know just where to put the ball. But play different courses. And it's new challenges all together.
So true…I’m great when I play a round in a simulator where the weather is nice but what a huge transition to the golf course! Also, I think I’m probably still 4/10 from that 3 foot range as well!😂
I loved these tips. I wish when I first started playing that I also understood golf ball lies, as in at 3:00 the ball is pretty propped up by the grass. So I needed to be careful not to swing too far underneath it. And for tight lights it's very hard to pick clean
Love your videos! One tip I use to do wind math… 1mph = 1% either for or against. Examples: 10mph into 100 -> 110 150 -> 165 200 -> 220 10mph with 100 -> 90 150 -> 135 200 -> 180 As a physics undergrad I checked this with my professor and found statistically significant results. Hope this helps :)
Actually, it is .5 percent for downwind. The wind will not help the ball travel as far with the wind, as against the wind, so there is a significant difference between the two. But I agree with the 1% added against wind. So that 125 yard shot against a 12 mph wind would play 110 yards.
1mph into the wind adds 1% distance to the shot. The amount it affects the shot is relative to the total distance of the shot. 10 mph wind in a 100 yard shot will make the shot play 110. 10 mph wind in a 200 yard shot will make the shot play 220. The amount to aim right on a shot above your feet is about equal to the amount of slope you're hitting up for a PW. 5 degree slope up, aim 5 deg right. If the ball is below your feet, the slope doesn't have nearly the effect because it's impossible to sole the club flat when it's below your feet (you'll topple over!).
Hi Rick; Thanks so much for your wisdom in sharing with us that unlike the golf industry, who make wild claims that the newest equipment will create miracles on your game & make you better just by using their products because many of us who want to believe them, actually will & then be disappointed when the miracle doesn't magically appear. Given the ridiculous prices being paid, especially for drivers, makes it even MORE ridiculous. Rather than spending $600 for a driver, spend the $600 for lessons that WILL help you become better, assuming you take the time to practice.
Rick, this has to be my favorite video you've ever done. Don't get me wrong, you are the gold standard, but this is real content and I'd love to see more like this.
3:12 on the side slope, what if you open the face more than usual, when the ball is higher than your feet? I’m in the belief, that I tend to compensate intuitively trying to aim the face towards my target rather than play away enough. Found out compensating on sidehill lies with mid-irons from distance and either make subconsciously the ball pull the ball against the slope or go straight rather than ride the slope with the theoretically natural curvature.
Love the tips videos. Especially the tip to just have fun and remember why we're out there. So easy to get angry. But golf is hard! Keep up the content please! Love it all.
Great stuff. A lot of good reminders for us amateurs about to start the season. My only critique is to use less left/right speak for us lefties having to do mental gymnastics lol. Always appreciate the video instruction that says things like lead/rear hand/foot or away/towards to keep things more universally clear, over some definitive statement of ball higher and it goes left.
When I first started playing, there weren't many options fir equipment. I heard that if you were new to the game, buy regular flex shafts. Stiffs were for good players. Trouble was that I was a former little league baseball player and hit home runs frequently. It took 40 years for me to finally have clubs that were right for me. I ended up with long, extra stiff clubs that I built for myself from parts on the web. I immediately started playing better. It was noticeable the first time I hit the range. My thoughts: get a good fitting and practice all the time.
The reminder to taken it easy on yourself is *so important*! You want to do well. Golf is hard. It's so easy to get discouraged quickly. Have your 3-4 seconds of "damn I'm an idiot," but then move on. Don't mope around pissed off 6 holes later, it'll ruin your round and annoy your fellow players in your group.
Great video to help re-set the mind. I’m really really hard on myself with duff shots 😢 It’s usually after watching the PGA tour and expecting to replicate. From now on I’m going to chill! Cheers Rick ⛳️🏌🏼♂️👍
1:34 this made me question what I know… At this point I know there is links course and park-style course (at least that’s how I WOULD have described it). Now I’m not sure I know the difference between them all. A video that breaks down course types and course features / feature types and what they are called would be epic! Golf Course Design 101
I agree on Equipment. But getting the Right Clubs for your swing and getting Technical Products like Launch Monitors and Range Finders will go a long way to understanding your distances you hit each club.
Totally agree, don't put too much into clubs. My biggest regret now I'm retired not having more lessons. Also don't let work, as I did, take over your life. I'm now having lessons it's so different. I nearly gave it uo due to a left knee problem, X-rays physio etc. Then decided to have a lesson and explained my knee problem. Immediately the pro honed in on my bad technique and knee. The full video analysis systems are great as you see what your doing instantly. After a week of drill and range work I went back and signed up for a 5 lesson package. No knee problems since and also I'm not coming home with backaches, well not to the degree I was. I've also added 40 to 50% to distance and still improving, plus less aches. 'Unlearning' bad habits that have become ingrained is tough. Now on my second set of 5 lessons. Can't recommend lessons enough, and if you're buying your kids a set of clubs buy a good second hand set and a package of lessons.
Shared this with my 12 year old who just started, really great advice, wish there was a channel I could find for kids of his age/experience/distance hitting to help with course management/expectations etc, watches Good Good and can't understand why he's taking 8's and 9's😂 Maybe I should buy a camera and start a channel with him!! 🤑...😂
Yeah these are good - these are again the natural roadblocks that beginner golfers will face and discover the first 5 times on a course. Good stuff mate.
Let's be honest, your #1 tip happends at the beginning of every year. The hackers / high handicappers think that the more money they throw at the newest clubs, the better they will play. Great tips Rick.
Need more of these. Starting to get some sense of consistency when it comes to hitting the ball. Best score is a 112 so far, it's literally my short game that's killing me. When I went out last I practically fixed my slice and started driving the ball 215-260 yards which is mind blowing to me. And I was crushing with my 4 wood (which was my WORST club before that day) 190-210 yards and I was like WHERE DOD THIS COME FROM???
Number 6. Make sure the beers hidden in your golfbag match the single one you buy from the cart girl..
this could be the top tip. - alternately bring a cozie for your beers
I see it as more of a guideline than a rule. Especially since I've been stuck behind an elderly fivesome taking 20 minutes per hole.
Don't know what you're talking about 😂
Or bring your own yeti cup and hide the empty cans 😏
Glad I’m not the only one that can nurse a clubhouse beer for 18 holes.

Rick- I’m a beginner and this helped a lot. I used tips 3-5 in my round yesterday and shot my best score yet (96). Thank you for the tips brother!
You are a beginner and shot a 96?! When i was a beginner I shot 150!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Literally just ordered a starter golf set for me and my fiancée yesterday. This will be really helpful for newbies like us! Can't wait to get started
take some lessons too
@@ZX-wy1tw I second this, it will move you forward in leaps and bounds!

Definitely sound advice. I still catch myself at times being too hard on myself. The last tip was an especially good one.
I always use that putting tip 2 putt for par or bogey is fine birdie is a bonus

Yeah, you lefties definitely get screwed on any instructions online... that might be a good thing tho!
Ball above your feet, you will tend to pull/draw/hook the shot. Ball below your feet, you will tend to push/fade/slice the shot. Aim accordingly. ;-)
I play with a leftie and tell him the ball will always want to move away from the slope
@@MonsterERB great advice for the ‘ Lefties ‘ I was thinking Left is still Left in anyone’s game
Splendid video. Love the content. I'm taking my first lesson this Saturday at 49 years old.
Also, Aim small miss small. Pick a precise target and go for it.
Love your videos! One tip I use to do wind math… 1mph = 1% either for or against. Examples:
10mph into
100 -> 110
150 -> 165
200 -> 220
10mph with
100 -> 90
150 -> 135
200 -> 180
As a physics undergrad I checked this with my professor and found statistically significant results.
Hope this helps :)
Actually, it is .5 percent for downwind. The wind will not help the ball travel as far with the wind, as against the wind, so there is a significant difference between the two. But I agree with the 1% added against wind. So that 125 yard shot against a 12 mph wind would play 110 yards.
Great reminders as we kick off the season here in Canada... Thanks Rick!
A phrase I remember growing up learning the game was "all the gear no idea", I played pretty well with my dads hand me down set haha
I agree. It's a great vlog this year I have been playing other golf course.
Bonus tip is the highlight, boss! Golf is hard, have fun!
I have learnt soooo much from your videos, super thankful.
I had almost forgotten tip #5. This is such a good tip because if you can do this skill, a portion of your shots are going to go in.
Helpful video as usual. Thanks, Rick. The 3-foot putting rule is the distance from the hole or radius, not the diameter however.
I picture a hula hoop around the hole and aim for it
Some gold here, thanks for (putting) these out there 😀
Great stuff.
Thanks Rick. I appreciate this video. Have fun out there!
Great tips! Now to keep them from slipping my mind!
Appreciate the honesty. Maybe a similar video about course management?
Great tips. My favourite tip is the bonus tip. Love your golf instruction videos.
I enjoy your videos immensely Rick , keep them coming !😊
Great advice Rick -Simple but absolutely essential.
Best video for tips I've seen in a while thanks RS
Terrific video with immediately actionable advice - thank you!
Coming back to golf after playing 20 years ago as a kid perfectly timed video!
I did that same first fairway wood shot yesterday. But, off the tee.
The double bogey finish on each hole is much easier after perfecting lag putts. Thanks, Rick!
Loved the Scramble video with Guy. Pls do it again!
Sickening how many losers are out there, trying to scam ppl
Shared this with my 12 year old who just started, really great advice, wish there was a channel I could find for kids of his age/experience/distance hitting to help with course management/expectations etc, watches Good Good and can't understand why he's taking 8's and 9's😂 Maybe I should buy a camera and start a channel with him!! 🤑...😂
I can't wait to give these a try. Thanks for the videos
I'm looking forward to it.
Yeah these are good - these are again the natural roadblocks that beginner golfers will face and discover the first 5 times on a course. Good stuff mate.
Absolutely class top tips!! Thanks as usual!
I find winter muddy course most difficult with my irons.
Great tips!
Please do it again soon, really enjoyed it 👍
Awesome video. Well done sir!
Thanks for the reminders!
Solid advice. Good video. 👍
Lag putting really took my putts from 3.2 a round to almost 2.1 average now. 🙌🏾
I tell people you PLAY golf. Golf is a game to be PLAYED to be enjoyed. Thanks for the bonus tip!
Let's be honest, your #1 tip happends at the beginning of every year. The hackers / high handicappers think that the more money they throw at the newest clubs, the better they will play. Great tips Rick.
Mine is chipping. I spend a few hours a week practising my chipping and I can honestly say that it has lowered my scores considerably.
Good tips, especially on the lag putting.
Great video Rick, as usual. Please keep the tips coming. Very helpful.👍👍
