I play whatever balls I find. Sunday I found 13 balls in the thick rough and at the edge of the pond. It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.
I don't. I use the same ball all the time. golf balls perform differently. if you use the same ball you know how it will perfrom and react on each shot.
@@tomjones3013 Congratulations on achieving a single-digit handicap. When you struggle to play even bogey golf, ball performance is pretty much meaningless.
@@ralphgizzip4408 I'm not that good but I do benefit from using a ball that suits my game. slow swingers need a softer ball, hard hitters need a ball with more compression, players who struggle with distance need a ball that goes further, and so on.
I'm brand new to the game. My first course, I lost 10 of the 12 balls I took. Playing the balls that I find is 100% necessary. The ball always hitting the same isn't important to me yet. I get the same enjoyment if one ball goes 30 yards shorter than the one I hit on the last hole. My shots are so bad at the moment that consistency just isn't important at this time
Hey some folks can hit a variety of golf balls , I’ve been way to annul whith my golf ball types but lately if I find a ball while playing and it is somewhat soft like a Calloway soft , I’ll use it on water holes if you know what I mean ? I’m not that happy when I ditch a good ball in da water ! Have a good golf season coming up bruh 😊
Balls. Only matters if every swing is near perfect. Same with “fitting”. Total baloney. Hybrids? Maybe one. Sorry coach I don’t agree with you on most of your tips. You confirmed the “fitting” idiosyncrasy talking about expensive shafts
I caddied years ago, we were ALWAYS taught to set the clubs as you said, woods at the top, short irons progressively at the bottom. This helps not only to protect the clubs themselves, you are not constantly searching for a club as well as knowing instantly if you are missing one.
The only problem is if you go from trolly to cart you have to rearrange it. If it’s set up the way he says and you put it on a cart the short clubs will be behind the tall clubs.
Everyone and I mean everyone puts their clubs in the bag upside down at my club. Used to be only good players put their clubs in the bag correctly, now even those guys are doing it wrong and looking stupid.
I am lucky. I did club fitting and club repairs for years. I put my own equipment together to suit me. What did I learn for all those years? Most people have no clue why they have this or that set of clubs and no clue if their clubs suit their capabilities. In my youth, late teens and early 20s I could hit the ball well, long, and straight, mostly and had a 6 handicap. My Dad taught me club making. I did attend a club builder's course. I just wanted to know more. 28yrs in the Army, infantry, a family, deployments, the golf went on hold. I'm 65 now, retired, completely, and fairly beat up physically. Three lower back surgeries will reduce your game in a way you cannot imagine. My sticks now? 13 degree 3W (as a driver), 5W, 7W, 9W, Ping Zing 2 irons, 6-PW, wide soled 52, 56, and 60 degree wedges. Senior shafts in everything except the lower three wedges, which are R- flex, and everything is graphite shafted. Yes, game improvement clubs are essential. Last year, I got my handicap to 12 and I can live with that. My rule #1? Hit it in the short grass, no matter which club you must use to get it there. Rule #2? Practice chipping and putting a LOT. Rule #3? No hero shots. If in trouble get it to the short grass. I have tried to simplify the game. Loved your analysis in this video. Spot on.
Agreed on the set up of clubs in the bag, that just made sense to me when I started playing to put the longer clubs at the top. I have a 4 hybrid but am comfortable with the other irons. I agree on the balls but I’ve only started this recently as like a lot of amateurs I have a tendency to lose balls. I’ve gone round the last few rounds though with 1 ball so starting to buy one brand at a time to see how they perform for me
I play 20+ year old Titleist blades 2-PW. I hardly consider using these clubs as anything to do with ego because I learned with blades 30 years ago and have been hitting with these for almost 20. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you flush a forged blade. So pure. As for the rest of your list, I agree. Especially with staying consistent with your ball choice and club organization in the bag.
Totally agree with your long iron advice, I carry a 5 iron, but only use it for getting out from under a tree, if my 6 iron is not enough, I reach for my 4 hybrid.
If you play on a course with a lot of trees, long irons are critical. I play a Mizuno Fli-Hi 2 iron. 200 metres without getting up in the branches is worth plenty of shots a round. Hybrids are also more prone to hooking. Long utility irons have much of the benefit of hybrid forgiveness with more shot control.
@@danmcfall2967 Show me a golfer who never strays from the fairway. Ridiculous comment. The best players in the world miss the fairway 20% of the time.
I went to our local PGA store and tried 5 different setups - he gave me all options of the clubs in store with the setup he built for me. They ranged from $650 for a set of irons to $2k and let me decide. This particular gentleman was great at his job. I high pressured myself into the more expensive irons as they are going to be a 20 year set for me
I did the same thing at golftec.... They only wanted to sell me Callaways. And the fitter was hiding the good shots from the other clubs. Worst experience ever.
Having my Irons fitted, made me go from a 25+ handicap to an 18 almost instantly. It was amazing to find out why it hurt every time I hurt with my old clubs, because they were too small, and it helped to try so many different types of Irons. I got the Ping G400, and it actually helped me improve my swing!
One thing I've learned is to keep the carrybag as light as possible, it makes a big difference for my game during the last holes if I carry my ultralight bag with 9-10 clubs, just enough balls and 33cl waterbottle, compared to carrying my full size carry bag with 14 clubs, big water bottle, 12 extra balls and other stuff from previous rounds. My full carry bag makes me exhausted during the last four five holes and it affects my precision and concentration making me do silly unessesary mistakes. Keep your carrybag light, play better golf despite leaving out your longer clubs at home. It's kind of a sport in itself deciding which clubs, and how many, you're going to put in the ultralight bag. :)
@@method341 I have a Big Max trolley for my full 14 clubs bag, but my back hurts after pushing it up and down a full length course, which affects my swing. I prefer to use my ultra light carry bag with 8-9 clubs, it helps with my posture while walking, and it is much easier to lift in and out of my car. Don't want an electric trolley, and I prefer walking for exercise, instead of driving a buggy.
I would love to walk more of my local courses, unfortunately peak playing season here has this year seen ambient temps in the 35-40* range and heat indices in the 50* range... I shit you not... I played one round at a roughly 50*C heat index.
Great vid, Defo agree with everything you say, I spent thousands over the years finally decided to lose the ego and get full bag fit and now my game has improved massively I.e hybrids woods etc etc. Good learning curve for you avid golfers get rid of the EGO!!!!
I recently bought a $50 shaft (Accuflex Vision) and have never hit so straight and long in my life. My golf buddies were astonished. Now I'm looking to sell all my expensive shafts.
Totally agree with the "stick to one brand and type of golf ball". Knowing how they react, especially around the greens is a stroke saver. I've tried to switch between balls and some spin much more than others. Losing that predictability when chipping for example.

That’s good combination ! I’ve stoped carrying the three wood and stick to a 5 wood for fairway shots ! I could use a 6 hybrid but they are harder to find when matching hybrids ! The 3 piece golf ball is my staple and yours as well huh ? I’m still carrying a 5 iron but it’s getting harder to hit it when it isn’t on a tee ! I could use a 6 hybrid, and that club can carry you to the green from a ways out ! Good luck this season with your golf bruh !😊 I’ve reached retirement age and I just love golfing ! Have fun 😊

I have a 90 SS and love my Srixon Utility irons... when on the Links course I play on , the Ping 4 Hybrid rules in the parkland. Great vid Lockey and my low bullet on the links rules.
What I like about your videos is that they are applicable knowledge.... Not some complicated swing changes that require hours of supervised coaching or that may actually lead to compensations. And on this video, ABSOLUTELY on dehydration, especially in the Cayman Islands or a dry climate like AZ. I chew "Salt Sticks" in addition to the water. '
Thanks, that was fun. I did pretty well (carry woods at the top, short irons at the bottom; always have my water bottle with me, use stock "regular" shafts etc) but you're right -- the 1st tip nabbed me! I had a very good round the other day and have seen steady improvement in my game but chastised myself for "golf ball roulette" and told myself I need to pick one brand/ball and stick with it.
I like how organized you are. I agree completely. My bag is optimized I feel unfortunately so improving is on me with the possible exception being my current driver. Thanks
I always liked using long irons, but at 63 and trying to return to golf (dodgy heart, arthritis, asthma, unemployed) I think your call about hybrids might be a wise one. Might have to ditch the blades too (used to play off 7), also need to remember to actually eat and drink what I have with me. Thanks for the reminder coach.
Yep!!! Started playing again (but not playing regulary.. so tried to BUY a game.. nearly ALL PING clubs.. didnt get checked out just bought OFF the rack Ping G430 irons based on my swing (20 years ago)standard loft/ lie. Realised after a while i was struggling with the irons .. got measured up .. recommended 2 degrees upright and half inch longer ..got Dynapowers coming.. slightly less offset than pings and were hitting them closer to the middle as opposed to out of the toe with the pings. Dropped 5 iron got Dynapower 5 hybrid. 6-pw . Funny enough though Ping G425 5 AND 7 wood are fine. So now have mixture of Pings and Wilson
Just started watching your channel the other day. Great content. Fan of your channel. And I was at one time guilty of playing different golf balls during a round once I lost one. Only use one golf ball now (Calloway). Shaved 6 strokes off my game. Keep up the great work!!!
Low handicapper here and I already do all your suggestions. But I will point out a lot of players put their clubs in the bag opposite your suggestion because it makes them easier to access when riding in a cart.
I’ve gone the opposite. I play a 4-u (i230s) and totally ditched the hybrids. Today I picked up an iCrossover 2i, and dialed the g430 5w down to 4w loft. I am a 17.9 currently. Irons for me are more reliable, as I tend to hook hybrids. My driver ball speed is right around 148; I’m 50 years old.
I'm only guilty of carrying different balls. Though generally I start the round with 3 brand new ones (currently Srixon Z-star XV) & then if I loose all 3 of those I grab a Kirkland outta the bag to replace it. Always have at least 1L of water, a couple Cliff protein bars, bug spray & usually a couple pints in the cooler pocket as well 🤣
It was 105 degrees today, I drank over 2 liters of water by the 9th hole and called it a day at 12pm -ridiculous. I’m am going to Costco and buying a bunch of coconut water tomorrow though, makes me feel better hydrated
My confidence is knowing i have 200 golf balls in my arsenal (donated to me by friends/family). Hopefully by the end I'll have an idea of what brand (literally) stuck with me the most. With what remains I'll frame and keep being too afraid to loose my favourite ones😆
Great video. Agree on the crazy expensive shafts. The stock shaft selection is usually good enough for the amateur to find one that will deliver good strikes. Shafts are so player dependent that we need to find the shaft that minimizes our bad strikes, no shaft will correct a bad swing. All these shafts are tested on robots...enough said. Have never been able to hit a hybrid, but the 7 wood has been great.
Need to go to golfbox and try different brands, I was terrible with hybrids until I tried a callaway B21 the head is bigger and is offset so looks slightly closed at address. Playing one of these was night and day for me, anything that looks open at address, 100% it's all a mental thing but it does not inspire any confidence and I end up pushing it right or slicing it. So it's worth trying a few brands I've moved onto the wilson hybrids the heads a little smaller still has that offset slightly closed at address and I have 3 in the bag 22° 25° 28°.
I am not a fast swinger but I hit my long irons a lot better than hybrids. My biggest mistake with my previous set was going with a 4 hybrid vs. a 4 iron. I remedied that this year.
I can't hit hybrids at all, people don't understand why I can't hit hybrids but have no problems hitting my MP30 long irons. I don't know either but I also struggle to hit modern fairway woods off the deck for some reason too which is why I still use my Callaway stealhead lll 5 wood. I would like to change my MP30s for something a bit more up-to-date like the Mizuno 223/221 combo. Those are mint.
I’ve never owned a hybrid, but it’s because I’ve never had trouble with long irons. I hit the long stuff and the short stuff well. I struggle in the middle of my bag. I can hit 8 and shorter and 5 and longer pure 9/10 shots. The 6-7 irons are very prone to hitting fat or thin. I’d rather have a full 5 iron into the green than a full 7. Because the 5 iron will leave me in a good spot, but the 7 has a 3/10 chance of catching it in the teeth and skulling it over the green.
Changed my Hybrids out for fairways woods as I kept pulling the Hybrids and the woods fly high and stop. Use long irons in the wind when I need to keep the shots low. I set the bag up for the conditions rather than just having same bag for every round.
The shaft part:I was using a hzrdus green shaft 65 grams stiff, hated it. I bought the hzrdus smoke yellow stiff at 76 grams changed my driver swing. I’ve done this with fairways woods and hybrids too but it doesn’t work for everyone worked for me
Great video. The only thing I’m guilty of is not having a hybrid in my bag. As far as food and drink, I always have water with me and we stop at the turn and have lunch.
What about your handcrafted? Very guilty of using any old ball, but I do tend to stick with premium across the brands. Like how you drape the towel between the irons and woods; I’m going to do that. I’ve tried various hybrids but tend to hook them massively.
I’ve watched hundreds of golf videos. Some have maybe featured food but none have directly addressed it. But sooo important. I was playing a round had a good front 9, shot a 42, decided to just get beers at the turn with no food or water. Started feeling like crap by the 13th. shot a 70 on the back 9. Learned my lesson.
Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful tips. I used to play fifteen years ago and completely forgot about these things. I’m about to return to the game just now and really needed those reminders. I managed to get a set of tailor made Rac os iron’s for my return. They are not too expensive and based on the reviews I got, they are considered to be really forgiving clubs. Still not sure if I made the best choice but they are what I could afford just now. Thanks again for a great update John.
Thx. Getting in to golf now I know I play better using the same brand n model of ball. I Al know I play better when I sip often n eat something every few holes. The bag set up just works better overall. Thx
Sorted. Around the time this video was released, although I wasn't part of the Lockey army yet back then. Started using just one ball type after I got fitted for new irons last July (the big reset of my golf journey) around 70 compression fits my swing well. started on the AD333, but then Urethane skin feels just a bit nicer with putting: enter the TM Tour Response. Shortly after I got a second hand hybrid 5 - but not for the 'proper' reason but because a frozen shoulder prevented be from getting enough distance on the old 5 iron. I'm glad I did though, because it's a wonderful thing, much more forgiving, so the end result is the same. Got stock shafts too. No drink is still the odd mistake occasionally (but no issue either on 9 winter holes) but food-wise I'm totally bananas too. On the bonus tip: I have the Ogio silencer to immobilize my clubs.
I got rid of the 3 and 4 iron early on (I was gifted a complete set of original Callaway Big Bertha's that were old but never used) I started playing in May this year and following a golf school, I bought a hybrid. I am inconsistent with it but even if the ball doesn't rise far, it goes further than the irons. I use slazenger balls as they are cheap and I don't think they will make a big difference to me at the moment. I am finding some success with the 5 wood. Onwards and upwards!
Great video! I have to comment on the "having a sip" every three holes tip, This has to be taken in context. Having a sip every three holes from my flask did make the game enjoyable, I'm not sure it really helped my score much :).
I’ve been on the fence about trading my 5-iron for a hybrid for a while. I’ve never really been consistent with it, and I’m not getting any better as I get older. More often than not, I’ll take an easy shot with my 4-hybrid before I’ll reach for the 5-iron. This video may be the kick in the pants I needed to make the switch. 😂
As a high scorer and a golfer who is coming back to the game after a 10 yr break I agree with everything except the balls. Im a budget player and with my score as high as it is, I buy use balls. I wont notice the difference. When I get close to breaking a 100 then Ill look at getting consistent with them lol. Also thanks for the tip with the clubs. Ill try it next round!
Excellent video and very entertaining! The two I am guilty of is not eating enough on the course but that is mainly on hot days. I always have water but on hot days I just don't have an appetite. I am also guilty of club set-up in my bag so I will have to try that one. 😁
Guilty of the 1st one, to a point, I won't put any ball I find in my bag, but a pro v1/x I will. The 2nd point I do not like hybrids, bought 1 which I was fitted for, it lasted a few rounds but get better results from my 3 or 4 iron. That said, I have replaced the 3i with a 7 wood as it is more forgiving and also carries the same sort of distance as the 3i. Totally agree with point 3, my irons are mp30's still love them'
Good stuff. Recently learned about choosing the right ball. Not sure of my swing speed but I know it’s in the 90s tops. Buying tour golf balls is a waste of money for me
I use Calloway Revas in bright pink to go with my Calloway Reva clubs! I do only use one ball per session because I don’t lose mine. In my one year of playing I have lost one ball! The main reason is that I don’t hit that far but hit fairly accurately, Im sure this is due to the lessons Ive had weekly from day one.
Me personally,I have my woods at the top I have 1 hybrid in the bag personally I don’t think too much of hybrids and utility irons, I have my irons in the middle of the bag, my tip is looks and feel of the irons are everything it’s the difference between scoring well on the course and losing distance because of choosing the wrong clubs, I have my wedges at the bottom of my bag, I have 2 wedges in the bag everyone’s different I prefer a 56/12 and a 60/8, my putter sits at the top with the woods so it’s easy to collect when you get to the green. Ball: he’s correct in terms of ball use, but use any foreign ball type/brand for the practice range or the warm up area and them separate from your competition golf balls. My biggest pet peeve is that if you want to avoid all mistakes get fitted it’s not rocket science and stick to 1 brand plus use wooden tees instead of plastic tees as they will leave marks on your woods.
I’m with you ! Many golfers just jumble their clubs in the bag , I don’t know how they find them ! I am super organized in me bag ! Woods at top the hybrid, then irons 3 / slot in order and 2 wedges plus putter at very bottom ! This helps me not lose a club because everything is easy to see and bunched in threes so I know if one is missing ! I’m not super organized in life but when it comes to golf I’m all in ! I hope you have a good season coming up and I just love golf , can’t get enough 😊
Agree with all your tips - been playing regularly since Feb now WHS 6.7 and just turning 55 - I’ve just purchased my third hybrid replacing irons 4 and 3 (and 5/4 wood) Incredibly forgiving clubs. In the winter I play any old gash YELLOW ball it really doesn’t matter IMO (yellow means you can find them so much easier when mud splattered) maybe I need to try and play just one ball type in summer as you suggest. Food and drink always (at least 1 litre of water in those summer heat waves)….what about glove types and condition?
The way you put your clubs in the bag depends on whether or not you walk or ride the majority of the time. I can't remember the last time I walked a round. Putting my clubs in the bag like you said would be so annoying as you would have to reach over and around your driver/woods to get to your irons and wedges.
Great video Coach! I am a low single digit hcp with a 115+ SS and irons are the best part of my game. I play 2 hybrids instead of long irons unless I'm playing links, because it makes scoring easier from long approaches/Par 3's. It boggles my mind when I see slow players using long irons. Play what you like for sure. I support that, but don't understand playing a club you physically can't. I see it multiple times every time I play. 4,5,6 irons that only get 20-30 feet off the ground and can't hold a green. Just don't understand it.
Good question - I wouldn’t. Play hard yellow ball in winter as no run and chipping is to the flag. Leave the soft but long 3 layer expensive balls for summer IMO
I only use one kind of golf ball but once or twice a year I will try a different one just to see if I like it. Club head speed: wish I saw this video 3 years ago. Had to figure out for myself to get rid of long irons and get hybrids. Getting old sucks
Nice video, I agree with you on the fact that not many golfers drink or eat anything around the course, I usually drink at least a litre of water over the course of a round and usually have a couple pieces of fruit and a snack bar also. And I also see a lot of players spend lots of money on their driver and then they have a cheap nasty putter that is probably bent, makes no sense when the putter is the most used club in the bag at least once or twice every hole.
Great points: Use the same golfball, get the shaft that fits your swing speed (senior), use woods under 6 iron (I use 5 only for punch shots out of trees), carry water and snacks, bag setup I’ll try but I also use iron covers (why spend $1200 on irons and immediately bang them together)
I was using one ball, TaylorMade Soft Response, love them but went through my supply and started using whatever I pulled out of my bag, what a difference, not happy. Guy Canada 🇨🇦
I have plenty of clubhead speed, it’s the skill to deliver it accurately that I lack. I think if you really attack the ball then hybrids & woods can increase disasters. Irons only for me, helps reduce loosing any random ball I’ve found 🙂
This video would help more golfers if they would just listen. More than any video on UA-cam. I just got a 6,5,4 hybrid (took the ego out of my bag) and play the same brand and model golf ball every time. My game took a huge leap. I would add one more. Ditch the 3 wood and get a 5 wood. The same players that could benefit from hybrids should be playing a 5 wood instead of a 3 wood. I even replaced my blade wedges with cavity back wedges. Huge improvement.
The rando balls mistake is me. However, I have narrowed down the compression factor. As a result, I've got about 200 near perfect ProV's in a container, just waiting to be given to a buddy that treats me to a really good round of golf. I've come to learn that they are not for my swing speed. At 61, my averages off the tee, went from 217 to 249 this season, by using the proper compression.
I just went to stiff shafts in my woods since I was hitting a lot of pulls and hooks. I liked the ball flight of the 3H so much, I went with a 4H as well and shelved my 4 iron. Also, add some tape, band-aids and ibuprofin to your personal bag in case you get cut or hurt your hand. I've given these things out more than I've used them.
LOL… The food thing is so essential. It’s always the little things for sure… In terms of my bag set up, I actually really like it as it is now. I’ve got two fairway woods and a hybrid. Those are some of the most clutch clubs I have in my bag outside the putter. Love the PSA Coach! Always good to take another look at these things…
Good video, Matt. I am guilty of tip/mistake #2, I swing my driver around 95mph-ish on a good day and still have a 5-iron (25°) in my bag. I wish more club brands would start offering higher lofted hybrids (26° and up) - most don't. BTW, my golf instructor urged me to stick to one ball brand (tip#1) last year and it has helped. Good luck with your UA-cam venture. Your self-deprecating, low-key style of golf instruction is appealing (to me, at least).
Pxg actually has very well rated hybrids and woods, they score high on my golf spy testing all the time. I had a great fitting experience and they have high lofted hybrids. You can get a good price on the 0211 series or the Gen 5
I haven't tried them but I like the concept. I play a hybrid set with more forgiving long irons and more controllable short Irons. My PXG 6 hybrid is one of the easiest clubs I've ever hit. It feels like how people will describe 7 woods, but I'm trash with my woods, so hybrids make much more sense. @@ljsb5289
bought a set of "majek" hybrid irons - 4 through PW, on Amazon! Took TEN STROKES off my round!! I could NOT hit irons with the desired "divot"!! NOW, NO divot, but much more control and distance!!! NOW I am breaking 90, not struggling to break 100!!!
When you are starting the game and have a handicap higher than 15, using a budget golf ball off the tee is very important. You will likely have multiple tee shots a round where you will have to hit a provisional, and if you keep using an expensive ball, that alone will break your confidence during a round. What many people prefer to do is buy a box of budget balls JUST for the tee shots, and then use their preferred brand of ball the rest of your shots to the hole. That way, you can enjoy your nice balls on those approach shots and take advantage of the soft feel and spin some better balls offer.
Ralph and I are on the same page. You believe we are concerned with finding the ball we hit into the woods. No, happy to come out of the woods with more balls than I went in with :O
Good one! I use different balls, but I think that as longs as my ballstrike is inconsistent it really doesn't matter...am I right or wrong? Handicap 28,4.
For me, I went to one ball simply because of my wedges and putter. If you putt a hard distance ball and a soft control ball side by side, the distance ball will roll farther and faster off of your putter with the same stroke. Distance control and ball speed are super important on breaking greens. Spin off of a wedge is similar. One ball will check up and not roll out as far, where as the other will roll for yards. These things could be the difference between par and double bogey. I came to this conclusion two years before Titleist started their ball fitting campaign. It wasn’t ALL marketing hype. It really can save 5-10 strokes per round just knowing exactly what to expect every stroke with a wedge or a putter. I just buy the cheapest ball I can with a urethane cover. For years I was a Bridgestone e5 guy , until they discontinued it. Now, I still haven’t decided between the Q-star and the Blue box at Walmart. Play the same ball doesn’t mean buy an expensive ball.
Definitely the food and drink. Also for years and years the golf ball thing. I'm better now. Also those CP2 grips are my absolute favorite. Have those on all my clubs as well. So nice
I liked having my clubs the way you hate them because it’s easier to access the smaller clubs. I also keep head covers on my clubs so they don’t get messed up by the other clubs clinking around. Look how shoddy those apex’s look. :)
I wish i had seen a video like this a year ago, i came to the same conclusion one year after buying new clubs . I thought i needed everything 4- sand wedge . Father’s Day came while Callaway had a 2X value on trade in clubs new setup 4 & 5 Hybrid 6- sand wedge irons ,one other thing I did was get a 7 wood for those 200 yard par 3’s . Time will tell if it helps my handicap currently 26. By the way i got fitted and was recommended to get upgraded shaft and did!
In a friendly game with my mates, I use a rubbish ball off the tee and a Pro V 1 for the approach shots and around the greens. This way I don’t waste to many quality balls. This does not apply to a comp.
Coach, great advice. My advice is to never spend a dime on any club fittings before you learn how to swing a club. Also, never buy expensive gb unless you have a game. Golf bags, if for some reason you intend on working out during a round of golf and stressing your shoulders out.Never purchase a carrie bag, unless you want to play a par 3 coarse. A cart bag will be better for organization and have a place for your putter. Don't be convinced you'll be able to walk and carry all that wait and maintain a solid round of golf. There's a reason for caddies. Good luck everyone!
i hear you there... buy used balls then you can play cheap balls, but consistent balls. when you go on a trip or something and want to break out the 60$ dozen go for it, but otherwise play a used ball
My shots are so bad at the moment that consistency just isn't important at this time
@@garethstroud5586 Oh Ok, no prob. I think you would benefit most from having some lessons.
I've got way too many good balls in my bag to switch to one model lol.
I'm the same. I also play a Max Falkner putter which I bought 50 years ago when I was 18.
Totally agree with your long iron advice, I carry a 5 iron, but only use it for getting out from under a tree, if my 6 iron is not enough, I reach for my 4 hybrid.
Same here, got a new 4 iron recently have have barely used it at all 🤣
@@kofishaw4 I just bought a new 4 iron recently too. I use it for stingers and when I want lower ball flight than with a hybrid.
I’m guilty of 3, using different balls effect putts, using a long iron when I have a slow swing speed and not eating. Walking around tires the body.
Best advice I've seen on YT. Spending money on expensive golf equipment to fix a bad swing would be better spent for lessons to improve your swing.
After I complete my bag, I am gonna be comparing the zx driving iron and that mizuno pro fli hi club a comparison.
@@danmcfall2967 Show me a golfer who never strays from the fairway. Ridiculous comment. The best players in the world miss the fairway 20% of the time.
💯 I keep a 3 iron in my bag and it isn’t used all that often, but when it’s needed it saves my round!
@@leemzgoogle917 but they play on the toughest courses.
When I go to club fitting all they wanted was to sell me the most expensive clubs
Pick a better fitter. There are plenty
That's their job. It's yours to know what you need and be assertive.
Get fit by someone who doesn't make commission. Do a separate fitting with your top three choices and decide for yourself
Use a buggy mate. Why would you carry your own clubs when you can just push something on wheels.....
I knoww right. I carry every other iron in my carry bag. Makes a huge difference and encourages creativity into your game.

Who curry's a bag . . . Hell no clic gear cart then I don't compromise of water balls 13 clubs etc my bags fully loaded wet weather gear umbrella everything.😊
Have fun 😊

How's your srixon udis? I want the 2i
What I like about your videos is that they are applicable knowledge.... Not some complicated swing changes that require hours of supervised coaching or that may actually lead to compensations. And on this video, ABSOLUTELY on dehydration, especially in the Cayman Islands or a dry climate like AZ. I chew "Salt Sticks" in addition to the water.

Thanks
Love that! Keep working hard 👍
Good call! But it’s still not right haha
Always have at least 1L of water, a couple Cliff protein bars, bug spray & usually a couple pints in the cooler pocket as well 🤣
as an old caddy...I already do most of these (the exception is the hybrids-I have high club speed). Great video though, love the attention to details.
My bag looks pregnant, lol.
Trust me.... try to hit a spot on the ground 4 inches ahead of the fairway wood. You'll nail it!!
You are a rare bread IMPO as most people I know hit hybrids better than long irons.
Do what works for you. 👍🏼⛳️
@@Alan-75 - I can't hit newer fairway woods with the bigger face off the deck either so I've stuck with my trusty Orlimar Tri-metal II woods.
Have the Sim2 irons and the 4-5 iron hit beautifully with my 95mph swing.. actually took my hybrids out to make room for another wedge :D
Thanks Coach. I agree with what your said here.
Loved this video and a sly dig at your mate mark about his chipper 😂😂
Boo :-) Crossy wedge forever!
This is a great video and a good reminder that factors outside of "swing dynamics" can take it's toll.
I am the opposite I have never been able to hit a hybrid consistently.
Tip 3 spot on!!! Invest in lessons or coaching. I like what you did with the golf towel.
Thank you. Some of your tips are really helpful. I totally agree. 😊😊😊
Buying tour golf balls is a waste of money for me
Can’t agree more on all your points, I left my ego at home a few years ago and bought clubs to help me, my handicap has got lower and lower.
I throw the OG lynx chip in the bag sometimes..love a full swing chipper swing
The way you put your clubs in the bag depends on whether or not you walk or ride the majority of the time. I can't remember the last time I walked a round. Putting my clubs in the bag like you said would be so annoying as you would have to reach over and around your driver/woods to get to your irons and wedges.
I have been using the q starvtours and z stars. Gonna go back to the xv and see if I can gain a few more yards.
It's either ego or lack of knowledge (probably ego)
I keep my ~19* 5 iron in my bag strictly for low punch out shots. find it much easier to control launch on partial shots than my 19* 3hybrid.
@@method341..... or lack of money and are playing with what they have and can afford.
Had 3 offset game improvement sets of irons (including Pings) i hit them late or early.. going back to a bladed set
Tip number 1, using the same golf ball, would u say use the same golf ball in the winter as what we would in the summer then?
Good question - I wouldn’t. Play hard yellow ball in winter as no run and chipping is to the flag. Leave the soft but long 3 layer expensive balls for summer IMO
I’m having good results with a lower compression ball when the weather turns cold !
For tip number 3 I've heard from a more season player " its not the wand, its the wizard".
Irons only for me, helps reduce loosing any random ball I’ve found 🙂
For Driver & 3 wood I always put these new type shorty head covers in a drawer, and buy a long sock type to save shaft wear
Ive put a bit of tape around my shafts where it makes contact with my bag so it stops rubbing against it and wearing the shaft down.
I’m 62 and carry a 4 iron. I still hit it well and carry about 185 with it. Replaced the 3 iron with a hybrid, still getting used to it.
Great idea 👍👍
You are spot on. Number 5 drives me crazy!!!
Love that!
Chucked my hybrid years ago, the worst club in my bag by a wide margin. Doesn't give me many other options unfortunately.
I bought a set of taylormade m6 swapping out the 3i and 4i for hybrids., because the hybrids give versatility
Totally agree with you on all 5 tips Coach. And they all are so simple. Come on people.
Good stuff! Thanks for the kind words.
Pxg actually has very well rated hybrids and woods, they score high on my golf spy testing all the time. I had a great fitting experience and they have high lofted hybrids. You can get a good price on the 0211 series or the Gen 5
@@CoachLockeysorry but everyone is different. I have no woods or hybrids and I have 5-2 irons as my long ones. I shoot 76 on average
@@ljsb5289
THANK YOU !! I made all these changes three years ago - seriously took (10) TEN strokes off my game !! TRUTH !!
bought a set of "majek" hybrid irons - 4 through PW, on Amazon!
Dont like hybrids.. had a couple now.. Ping G425 7 wood has been a god send...
Definitely the food and drink. Also for years and years the golf ball thing. I'm better now. Also those CP2 grips are my absolute favorite. Have those on all my clubs as well. So nice
Great to hear!
Good video, not guilty of any of them including food and drink but handicap still rising!
I liked having my clubs the way you hate them because it’s easier to access the smaller clubs. I also keep head covers on my clubs so they don’t get messed up by the other clubs clinking around. Look how shoddy those apex’s look. :)
Just removed my 4 iron thanks. Replaced it with a chipper! Too late for the expensive shafts. Money spent. Noted for next set. Thanks👍
Good point, always surprises me when I see someone who goes to purchase a custom shaft who hasn't been fitted yet?!
When were you at the Pulpit?? So surprised to see that pop up at 7:05 !!
Could of weeks ago 👌👍
Does anyone know what the name of the quarter zip he's wearing in this video is? I love it and I need one!
Callaway 1/4 Zip Odyssey Blocked Pullover
I wish i had seen a video like this a year ago, i came to the same conclusion one year after buying new clubs . I thought i needed everything 4- sand wedge . Father’s Day came while Callaway had a 2X value on trade in clubs new setup 4 & 5 Hybrid 6- sand wedge irons ,one other thing I did was get a 7 wood for those 200 yard par 3’s . Time will tell if it helps my handicap currently 26. By the way i got fitted and was recommended to get upgraded shaft and did!
Good stuff 👍 shame about the upgraded shafts haha could of gone to lessons! 😉
In a friendly game with my mates, I use a rubbish ball off the tee and a Pro V 1 for the approach shots and around the greens. This way I don’t waste to many quality balls. This does not apply to a comp.
brilliant video, really enjoyed it, greetings from Ireland
Glad you enjoyed it! 👍👍👍
Great channel coach btw! This kind of vlog is invaluable, never touched on elsewhere but some great tips
Glad you enjoyed it!
Coach,great advice.
I'm also guilty of playing with any golf balls I've found..! When I get my nice expensive new ones out, guess what, I lose them.. 🤣😂😅!!
i hear you there... buy used balls then you can play cheap balls, but consistent balls. when you go on a trip or something and want to break out the 60$ dozen go for it, but otherwise play a used ball
