Oh Baby, Come On!
In 1964 Dick Clark saw the successes of shows like “Shindig!” and “Hullabaloo” and made this American Bandstand spinoff pilot for CBS. CBS said “no thanks” but the show found a home on ABC a few months later. “Where The Action Is” ran on weekday afternoons from 1965-1967.
I hope this "fun watch" brings you at least a brief reprieve from these crazy times and, especially, this nail-biting election. Enjoy!
1965 was the best year of my life... married the love of my life.Eleven months later he was drafted in Marine Corps (found out I was pregnant),then Nam('66---'67).But he came home to a 9 month old daughter.Fast forward 2 more children & 5 grand children and 53 years later,he passed March 2,2017...agent orange.But still all treasured years❤️

In 1968 the death toll was 37,500. (and 3,750,000 Asians) Nixon told South Vietnam to cancel their Ceasefire due to be signed and if he won, he would make sure they won. 22,000 lives (+2,200,000 Asians) were sacrificed for a campaign tactic and 4 SCOTUS picks, one being Lewis Powell and his desire to kill the middle class.

i'm 70 years old. i grew up with all the "rock and roll" singers in this video. but i have to say, i had NEVER seen this video/film before! this must have been some kind of local L.A. show that never got aired on national TV! the entire thing was VERY entertaining as i remember the cars, the dances, the singers, and especially THE SONGS! thanks for posting this video that is right out of The Twilight Zone!
I was 14 in Dallas in '65 and saw this show regularly so yeah, I think it was national.
Watched it in Ky. Loved the Raiders, Fang, one of the guitar players was a favorite.
1965 was a one of the best years of my life. Loved this and all the music and memories!

@@suzannelawson9215 My high school years were 1980-84. I began listening to the radio in the late ‘70s from the age of 11. Disco reigned on the pop stations but there were hard rock stations. Matter of fact, as the ‘80s began, I don’t think I even heard the Beatles very much. It was more Jimi Hendrix, Cream, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd...My partner is 11 years older than I and turned me onto Dylan, the Beatles, etc. By the way, there’s a cool little search engine where you can find out which pop song was #1 on the day you were born. For me it was the Byrds’ “Turn! Turn! Turn!” and that is just perfect to enter the Earth plane with. For my partner it was “Mr. Sandman!” 🤣
I'm 61. My memories of the program were from '67 and on. It was a different opening theme and I think it was the Freddy Cannon song: "Oh baby come on let me there you where the action is."
Yes, that was the theme song when the regular series was being shown, not this song. I don't think this song was ever used on the real program.
Used to love listening to my older brothers and sister' records when I was a kid. I was fortunate to have a wife that also loved going to oldies concerts.
I remember watching this. I seldom missed any of this type show. I even enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk with mom.
This show and T.A.M.I. were the reason why I always wanted to go to California when I graduated from high school I was tired of looking at corn fields in the summer and snow in the winter!
When I heard "Bye, bye, Baby", by The Four Seasons, I'll tell ya; chills ran throughout my entire body. I remember this song so well !!!

I also remembered that for The Supremes it was kind of a reunion. They already did "Back In My Arms Again" on American Bandstand and in 1964 from June to August they were part of the Dick Clark Caravan Of Stars Tour where they found out after the tour ended that "Where Did Our Love Go?" was the Number One Song in the country. They didn't have access to Radio or Magazines like Billboard or Cashbox so imagine how stunned we were.

What fun this show must have been!
This is a real treat to see! What an ambitious production!! The coordination of all the elements was a huge undertaking on location in the day. The camera starting on a couple dancing in the distance outside a window at the ski lodge and pulling back to reveal Frankie...the camera pulling up to do an overhead at the beach. Moving that cumbersome, heavy gear around in the snow and on the beach was no small feat! The music playback rig must have been substantial.
This show is jam packed without missing a beat! What fun and high energy! I loved the "Hard Days Night" number at the end that involved all the groups yucking it up. I looks like everyone was having a great time. Jan and Dean were a riot. Seeing these performers in these settings cut them loose and showed them in a light we had never and probably will never see again.
On a personal note...my heart pounded for Chad and Jeremy back then. I was a huge fan.

What a great introduction to "Where the Action Is"! I used to watch the show every afternoon Monday through Friday, after I finished my homework. I loved Fang and Smitty and Keith Allison and all of the other regulars. This pilot is the bomb, and I am so happy to be able to watch it during this week!

We all used to wear the knees out of our jeans with the early skate boards which were just metal skate wheels on a board. Moms would iron on multiple knee patches. Later came the rubber wheels and turning adjustable skate boards. One little rock -and bust yer bums!
I still have my skateboard from 1966. Rode it all the time.
Had no fear in those days and didn't even wear knee pads.
Rented surf board's at Santa Monica beach. Wasn't even a very good swimmer. Had no fear in those days.
Sometimes hitch hiked with my friends,.
Had no fear.
I wouldn't do ANY of those thing's today.

I was 7 when this premiered, but I had Rock and Roll in my soul. Total pop culture kid so I loved watching this.
During this taping in March 1965 the Supremes posed on a sled in the snow here at Big Bear lake. That shot of the gals was used for their Christmas lp in December.
I was only 8 in 1965 but I did a helluva Swim dance. LOL. Used to watch this all the time. Drove my late Mom nuts. TY so much for posting this in these unusual times. Brought back a lot of good memories. :):)

I was a kid when this show was on. Every afternoon I'd race home to watch Officer Don's Popeye Club, but my teen older brother would overrule and I had to watch Where the Action Is. Thank you older brother.

Dick Clark called in a few favors to get such a stellar line up for a pilot . Video was still young with bulky equipment , but a lot less money then film . I remember the show well and still love the music .

This was wonderful. There were other shows of this style as well. Enjoyed them all, then and now!
Launched the career of Steve Alaimo. It was also one of the first TV shows to use video tape on location. In 1965, the video tape machines were so huge and bulky [and reel-to-reel] that they had to be installed in remote production trucks, like those used for major league sporting events. I think the same video crew shot the short-lived ABC afternoon youth-oriented soap opera, "Never Too Young".
A real shame there isn't a better quality video of this.

I was a 3rd Grader living on a farm with relatives for the entire year growing corn and fruit for a weekend truck farm market. We lived like sharecroppers. This was on TV on a rainy Winter Day. It was another world, out there in California. Entirely alien to the folks I was with - even though I came from San Diego and felt I was missing something.
Loved this show! Hurried home from school to see this, and NEVER TOO YOUNG.
I remember watching this show as a kid when my Dad was in Vietnam. My brother and I learned all the dances from this show.
Toni Basil (of "MICKEY" fame) was the choreographer to this bit of what I think is TV history--and I'm still waiting for Toni B to be awarded the Kennedy Center Honors for her tremendous body of work in dance, choreography and even music (talking about "MICKEY") over these many years. 🙂

Dancing on the beach was a blast. The 60's was all about dancing and surfing. The BEACH was our Gym...no charge.
I was about 9 when ‘Where The Action Is’ was on TV. But I do remember loving it!

1965, MY YEAR! The year of my birth. So many fab 60's acts together in the beach, gotta love the roar of the girls over their idols. Take me back. PLEASE.
1965 --The year I started kindergarten (I turned 60 in Oct.)! I had two older brothers who were 12 and 13 and I have a fading memory of watching this show with them after they got home from school. I had a little girl crush on Paul Revere and the Raiders Mark Lindsay and remember thinking I couldn't wait to grow up and be a young adult because it looked like so much fun! I also wanted to be a go-go dancer lol... Both brothers have since passed away and I've done a lot of living in the past 55 years. Watching this, I'm that innocent five year old agai and it warmed my heart and made me smile.
I never heard of Jackie and Gayle... I do remember Paul Revere and the Raiders showing up on different TV shows when I was a kid. Jan and Dean one of the first groups I listen to as a youngster they won't even wearing wrap around Foster Grant sunglasses yet back then

Jackie(Miller) and Gayle(Caldwell) were former members of the New Christy Minstrels, a legendary folk group. Rest in peace, Gayle.
I remember that "Do The Swim" was also featured on American Bandstand shortly after they moved to Los Angeles in 1964. Even then the Kids were dancing like there was no tomorrow.

I was 15 when they did concerts of this show. Seen it in Louisville ky. Paul revere and the Raiders. I was so in love with Mark Lindsey. It was one of the best nights of my life
I'm 70 years old and I lived it🎶🎼🎵 I saw a Beatles in 1966 Dodger Stadium 45000 I also saw Sonny and Cher The Mamas & the Papas The Rolling Stones Dave Clark Five The Who The Temptations and The Four Tops together in concert with Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. I refuse to go see the Monkees for obvious reasons LOL I also saw Joan Baez Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. What a decade it was. By 1968 the Monkees were an excellent live band. The evidence is on some bootlegs from that year.
I recognize a few names during the closing credits for future Norman Lear shows! CBS were pretty happy for their daytime lineup and didn't want to mess it up but ABC's gain!

CBS' loss was ABC's gain. Motown had the Supremes cut the medley (which they're lip syncing here) especially for the pilot. Classic stuff.
I love their medley! I found it on Spotify and listen to it all the time. They should’ve released it as a single in my opinion.
It's not as uncommon as you think. In the 1960's Agnes Nixon Wrote The Script for All My Children and NBC said "No!" so she went to the drawing board after leaving as a Writer for Guiding Light & Another World and created One Life to Live then after that show became successful she was asked to create a new Show it was All My Children and the rest is history.
That, and a few other "performances" from the pilot would eventually be shown in early episodes of the series.
Same thing happened to The Hollywood Squares. The pilot was taped at CBS in 1965. It was on the shelf for a year, NBC saw it, bought it, and the rest is history.

This show was how I found out what my dad did for a living when I was a kid. it came on late mornings in the summer in our viewing area and I loved to watch it. I was bummed because when school started I wasn't going to be able to watch my favorite show. When school started, the show was moved to late afternoons on the schedule. LOL.
How did this show enable you to find out what your dad did for a living?

ABC initially bought it for airing at 2pm(et) weekdays, starting in June 1965. It was popular enough to continue at 4:30pm(et) that September, and lasted through March 1967.

Same year ('65), and maybe months, if not weeks, removed from this taping, I saw The Supremes open for Judy Garland at Houston's Astrodome in December, '65 (the Dome was about 8 months old at the time)! I was all of 10, and probably spent most of the night with my head on Mom's lap, but I was there!

@@akrenwinkle No way I can recall that, being so young. Mom's stories of that night through the years, plus my vague memory of the sights and sounds is about all I can conjure!
That baseball season, though (the Astros' first in the Dome), 2,151,470 fans came through the gates for 81 games, second to the Dodgers (with 2,553,577) in all of baseball. That made the Astros' per-game average attendance of 26,561 also second to the Dodgers' 31,526.
Don't know where you read about the low attendance for that show. Great mid week surprise after what everyone is going through and may still be.gping through it. Yes I did recognize some of the names in the credits that were involved in some noted sitcoms. Also one name caught my eye and I thought, no it couldn't be but it was. The choreographer for the pilot was none other than the one hit wonder "Mickey" singer Toni Basil. She already had some experience being a choreographer and a dancer on Shindig! Everybody have a great rest of the week and looking forward to what Aaron will surprise us.with this Saturday.
I stumbled on a 1957-58 high school personnel guide from Las Vegas High School. Incredibly, it list for the administration, faculty and students, their addresses and phone numbers. Toni Basil was a freshman that year-she famously (see the official video for her hit single 'Mickey') was a cheerleader. I checked out her given address in that guide last year-and realized how close it was to her father's (Louis Basil) then employer-Sahara Hotel/Casino. (orchestra leader for the Congo showroom)
Basil was 22 in 1965. "Mickey" was released in 1981, she was 38. She turned 77 this past September.
She attended Las Vegas High School

I was 17 going on 18 in my senior year at Artesia High School in sou6thern California when this show was produced by Dick Clark and shown in 1965. I loved it!
This show used to come on after dark shadows. What a great couple hours it was.

Loved this show ... brings back many great memories. I lived in Southern California and got to go to quite a few of the tapings. One of my favorite Action groups was Don and the Goodtimes!

I had a skateboard in65 when I was 9. Not like today's but had a blast on mine!
Dragging main street on a hot summer night, Howlin Wolf Jack on the AM radio ( no FM in rural Texas ). Chinese fire drills, stealing stop signs,
and making out at the drive in. Of course we also had Vietnam, Chicago, Watts, and JFK and Kent State. The best music ever produced tied it all together. I could go on and on about what the50's, 60's and early 70's were to me, but you were there, weren't you.
