A 360 degree swivel seat would be an awesome addition, it would make the rear of the boat easier to access. Love the design wish I could afford one lol

Looks like a great platform. You need plenty of access hatches for wiring. This boat is obviously tailor-made for motors. A deck for a bow mount electric would be awesome, especially if the battery could be located in the stern. An optional heavy-duty transom should accommodate a 2.5 outboard. For fishing and an outboard, you definitely need a swivel seat.

A suggestion on the rear panel to support a trolling motor. I'd seen a design that included a molded "lip" on the upper part of the rear motor panel, so if the boat is inverted, a trolling motor will be less like to slip off the flat surface and be lost.

I like the look of the boat, and its open concept. I like the recessed areas, and a swivel seat would be great. Also keeping the weight down for cartop would be something I would be hoping for.

Would love to see lids on the recessed storage areas in front. Swivel base for the seat (whether standard issue or as aftermarket accessory) would be awesome. Removable transom is a great value add. Tracks are great, however with all the holes, seals or gaskets are a must. bungee storage compartments along the side walls near the seat would be great.
    Like the kit ideas.
One major thing, as an owner of the riot mako 10, you guys MUST provide stainless steel hardware. I’m already getting corrosion and rust in my rail hardware (after only 2 saltwater trips).

Love that wide open concept! Maybe a 360 seat to easily utilize the rear “tail gait”. Is it out yet?

My suggestion to the recessed areas is you should have molded in canals running through them so the water falls inside the kayak, (front or middle area) and maybe add some "scupper" plugs to keep water from dripping down out of the area

Make the area where the rear handels are flat so we can mount double power poles.. Mold the handle in the rear across the back under the lift gate. Great design!... The storage around the seat is HUGE!... U GUYS ARE HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION...

360 degree swivel seat is my only recommendation since it will allow easier access to stern for diving or motor applications. That will make this kayak absolutely EPIC in my opinion. I’m so excited for this. I love the Mako 10 and Mako 12. Taking the Mako 12 out scuba diving in the gulf this weekend. I love how well the Makos drain during rough water. The rocker in the front is nice for going through waves. The raised hatch in front next to scuppers ensures dry storage. I had scuppers plugged in bow of my Mako 12 and it filled with water but still no water got into the hull via hatch. Impressed.

Riot Kayaks Need easy 180 degree swivel on seat ideally while seated so user can get in and out from the stern of boat.
All I said about the removable transom is that I LOVE IT! Being able to pop out the transom will be nice for diving/spearfishing.

Here are my suggestions after owning a Mako 10 for 2 years and fishing at least twice a week from it.
    1. Moulded front & rear handles
    2. 360 lockable swivel seat
    3. Optional extra: Dolly kit that can be mountable on the tracks and deployed/retracted from it
    4. A notch around the drive well below the clear cover of the drive to prevent water from splashing in when it's choppy
    5. Snap on seats instead of slide on and screw on
    6. Transducer mount that can be lowered past the bottom of the hull to cater for transducers with side scan/imaging capability
    7. Self draining recessed areas
    8. Motor mount at the rear
    9. More side grab handles positioned around the CG of the yak so it can be carried on its side with 2 hands
    10. A steeper angle for the drive holding station so water drains out of the drive easily
    11. A more durable material for the side rail handle area. The foam material in my Mako 10 has torn

I think having the seat on tracks is necessary/ideal to trim the location of the seated person's weight properly when using a motor, otherwise the motor on a poorly trimmed kayak will lift the bow too much or not enough. The Nucanoe and Pelican Catch Power uses tracks as we for that reason. But a seat that's also height adjustable, and possibly 360 like you've said, would be an improvement.

I know I'm a year late, but here are my thoughts since I really like this concept (why I stumbled upon it):
    1) Motor mounting ability for up to a 2.5 hp outboard is key (without having to hassle with any rudder that's difficult to remove or in the way when using an outboard; I like having a rudder when not using a motor, but the rudder design needs to allow the easy use of an outboard). As long as the transom is strong and secure enough for outboard use, I personally don't care if the transom is removable or not, but that's because I personally don't need it to be a swim/dive platform and I'm agile enough to re-enter from deep water over the gunnells regardless.
    2) An upgraded seat base option/aftermarket with adjustable seat heights (low for stability in rough conditions, and high for visability and clearance sight fishing calm water) and 360 rotation that locks in place (when paddling or peddling) would be a worthwhile option. But the sliding on tracks seat position flexibility must remain, so the seat can be positioned along the tracks to properly trim the person's weight, especially when using a motor, so you've done a great job in that aspect.
    3) Having too much rocker and surface above water on the bow can catch too much wind. When wind hits too much more on the front than the other gunnels, that can actually rotate a stationary drifting boat (that's being fished from). That excessively high bow was a repeated complaint I saw from people reviewing the Old Town Sportsman Salty PDL. I understand that it needs enough rocker to avoid perling/excessively wet ride in ocean waves, but any hull that's more than about 15" tall likely has excessive wind resistance (and minimal wind resistance is ideal; look how sleek/minimal Hobie tends to be above the water)
    4) The more flat and open you can keep the deck bow to stern, the better. Maximizing the openness of the deck entails minimizing unnecessary intrusions molded into the deck area but, if possible, also having about 5 or 6 inches unobstructed on each side of the seat base or minimal obstructions under the seat while it's in the high position, so you could have poles or paddles laying on the deck floor under the seat, or so that even a passenger that's tagging along just plopped right on the floor behind the seat could slide his/her legs unobstructed under the seat (at least when its in the high position)
    5) I think maximum openness and flexibility to allow a 2nd seat to be added as an option/DIY, at least for a child or shorter adults, like the Nucanoe Unlimited, or even the Pursuit that accommodates DIY or kid-size 2nd seat options, is a huge selling point. Basically, a diy/casual tandem, or "plus kid" or 1.5 person capacity seems achievable and would add sales (like it has for Nucanoe).
    6) You made a great decision by not making it too wide (no wider); there are already too many other unnecessarily sluggish and unwieldy bargs-like kayaks on the market.
    7) If this is manufactured in Canada, advertise that more prominently. Many Americans like me prefer to purchase goods from our neighbors in Mexico or Canada (rather than China).
    8) I have mixed feelings about swappable drive pods/inserts that can accept either a hobbie drive style pod, propeller drive style pod, or dry storage pod without any drive, like the some of the hoodoo kayaks or vibe searwater have. That drive pod idea is awesome in theory but, in practice, I've read complaints of seemingly reduced durability and fit (increased water splasing past) in all examples of such pods that I've googled, so those types of swappable drive pods probably aren't actually feasible/worthwhile.
    9) Everything, especially the drive, needs to resist corrosion long term in saltwater, and the drive needs a decent warranty. I've heard Riot's sales pitch regarding the drives use of plastic and stainless steel
to resist saltwater corrosion, that sounds great, just reasure customers regarding the durability and maintainablity of those plastic parts/gears.

Can you pass this open concept and rails to the 12?? I think the best set up is a milk crate type deal in the back and a cooler in the front. Coolers get heavy so they need to be away from the person in the boat or it makes one end dip too much

This is a pretty nice looking boat so far. I have a Mako 10 and have used the heck out of it since picking it up in early April. I love the open layout of the 14 in the vid. The abundance of track and some built in rod holders are some of my favorite things about my 10. I needed just a couple of things to get out on the water and start fishing. I think keeping it flexible and letting people customize their experience is the way to go. Regarding the things you all mentioned looking for feedback on: In the front, personally, I'd say something that could be closed off from the water if possible would be nice. If you left it recessed, as in the vid, maybe some kind of pod/container that you could put into those recessed spots would be ideal. You could put a battery or something in an open pod with a gasket lined lid. You could have a variety of options for pod/containers that could latch in so people could customize as they want. Some could have tackle organizers, or event a small insulated cooler lined one to keep a sandwich and a drink or two cool. As well, if you didn't need it you could take the pod(s) out and it becomes open storage. Those ideas may be too much, but I'm spit-balling here. I love the idea of the tackle storage slots along the sides of the boat, that is a great addition. The open space next to the chair would be great for a cup holder/dry storage bin for keys phone etc, maybe slots for tools (pliers, fish grips, etc). The other side could have an open bin to drop trash, spent line, lures or a 3700 series box would be nice. If there was a way to make the two sides swappable then people could put whatever they want on either side of their seat. For the rear, I think the the idea is great. If you leave it so that rear section is removable I'd like a latching system or something to keep that piece in place. Just to keep my paranoia in check while I'm out on the water or driving to the launch. I do like that I can pull my rudder up to prevent it from getting to beat up when launching and landing. But I can understand the challenge there with design of the rear, and it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me to see the rudder under the boat.
Overall, it is a nice looking boat and I am excited to see where you all go with it. As well, it is great to see you all engaging with your community to collect feedback. I really enjoy my Mako 10 and get asked about it a lot while I am out.
Thanks again for all of the good times I have had so far, and best of luck with the new boat!

    • @xtain996
      @xtain996 5 років тому +2

@@RiotKayaksTV Sorry! I like the open back in the prototype. The only thing I think I'd like is a latch, a bungee strap or something to keep the removable piece secure in the back when it is in place. I like the flexibility that removing that piece affords. Heck if that back piece was robust enough it could serve as a transom. Then if you had a motor that needed to be attached to a traditional transom you could do so and just pull the whole back piece off (motor and all) for transportation off the water. If you had Torqeedo or something similar you could just pull that back block off and mount to the rear deck super easy. I've never dabbled in the motorized kayak world, so I may be waaaaay off on all that. But, I think you all are on the right track with the back end.

At 14’ with an inset transom I think this could compete with the microskiffs and motorizable kayaks people are getting into. I would ask that the transom area be beefy or have the option to reinforce it. Another thing is, some sort of provision (closer to center for balance) for a deep cycle battery, to hold it in place and keep it dry if flipping or capsizing were to ever occur. With these in place I would definitely buy one. 👍

    • @RiotKayaksTV
      @RiotKayaksTV  5 років тому

Thanks for this. What sized battery and where? Our idea is that we would use the floor tracks for these kinds of things so that people can mount whaever they want. We will have a suite of simple inserts that can be used for this purpose. For the transom, the idea is that you can mount a motor on it but we want to know if pepople like the removable feature or prefer we simply mold it in?
      thanks!

I know this is an old video and the boat is out now, I am commenting in hopes that the design team is still monitoring. The 14 looks like a nice boat. In searching for a kayak focused on fishing local lakes, I have been looking at a number of boats and doing trade studies (40 years in aerospace engineering does that to a person). In light of current design trends and available products this boat as one glaring design error and a less glaring design choice. The biggest issue is the lack of rod holders molded in being the seat. I realize there is sufficient track to mount rod holders everywhere however those two molded in rod holders found on so many other boats including other Mako boats serve as mounting points for a trolling motor bracket. A side mounted motor is easier to control from alongside the seat than from the transom where a grab handle sits in the middle of the space a motor mount would use. The less glaring error is that the front deck does not offer a level flat area just behind the grab handle to mount a trolling motor such as the Xi3 with spot lock.
From my perspective the peddle drive is wonderful, but electric motors are the way forward, especially for larger boats.

  • @datapolo

Looks great. For me it would primarily be a freediving/scuba yak. An interchangeable transom so you can mount a motor or just blank off the opening is great. Even a boarding ladder! I am currently looking at a Riber Dive Kayak which is only 10' so a shorter version would be interesting.

Can you also prewire for deep cycle battery for a trolling motor? This will give me all the power options and if you can make available plug adapters for other pedal drives. Where else will people go to? This will be a skiff, kayak, power boat, you name it.

Looks like a great idea. I'm planning on getting a Mako 12 soon, just found out about them and really dig the upswept look of the bow. Makes it look like a sleek sea-going skiff. I'd be interested in one of these 14's if it also ends up having that sharp upswept, flared bow and the molded in grab handles like on the 12. Personally I'd like to see a solid molded on transom like on the Nucanoe though. I've heard complaints about the scuppers not working great on the Mako 12, hoping that gets revised. Also like y'alls wide solid color selections: orange, lime, yellow, love a solid blue too.

Pedal drive hole plug, if I want to use small gas outboard, I'd be able to flip the pedal drive up plug the hole and cover long distances to my fishing location. When there, I can flip the outboard motor up, set the pedal drive into the water and start trolling, vice versa. Removable transon, and 360 swivel chair. These will blow your competition away.

  • @IsleofWightBushcraft
    @IsleofWightBushcraft 4 роки тому

One complaint for the mako 12, was that water comes in through scuppers, making the central area , which is the main area you use, wet. This suggests that deck area needs to be a little higher above the water line. Also, on those front recesses which are great, why not have a small through drain , that runs out onto main deck below to where the two forward main scuppers are. It looks a great yak, the deck would need to be dry though, no scupper water coming in, this would be a deal breaker for me.

Recessed areas have to have a drain; maybe add a partition right behind the seat; run tracks equal distance along length of kayak to allow another seat to be mounted; seats should be locking swivel seats; I don't think having a removable back is a selling point, could be bad if kayak rolls with motor attached but movable partitions would be neat to customize gear/tank/battery areas.

    • @kayakexcursions5570

Yeah, ditch the rod holders, keep the tracks running the full length of the boat. A second could be placed back to back with the first or placed in the same direction. Having 3 removable customizable partitions lets you partition off certain areas for different gear or people or pets.

IMHO, if you intend to add an outboard motor (any size) I think you will have to lose the "removable" transom. No way would I clamp a motor on that stern piece.
On the same issue..if you intend to add an O/B, then a swivel seat would be a MUST.
I know you don't want to copy other manufacturer's crafts, but I would buy/rent a couple of Solo Skiffs, Jonny Boats, NuCanoes, and the new Pelican 10 foot motorized yaks. Have some yakkers do their own comparisons of all of the comparable features. Their feedback would be invaluable, I think.
You may want to hire them only for your own use or... let them do it on UA-cam for all to see. Your call. Aliex ??? on UA-cam is one guy I can think of who might do a fair comparison.
Your concept of tracks instead of built-in features is VERY attractive to the DIY segment of yakking. I think that segment is large, too.
p.s. My big butt wouldn't fit between the stern extensions to re-mount the yak from that angle. Ha Ha

Hi, for removable transom, your concern would be
Motor falling or vibration? How desirable is motor vs benefits of removable? Thanks!

@@RiotKayaksTV For me, a solid transom would be more important. Many other may not agree. Even if I simply wanted to attach a 30 lb. Thrust trolling motor, I wouldn't trust a loose transom. Of course, one could imbed T nuts on either side to allow for both permanent and removable options.

Yes, am thinking we could sell a kit for people wanting to do it? I think there are lots of ways to add strengh on the hull or using tracks.

@@RiotKayaksTV Yes re the kit. The best approach IMHO, is to build in flexibility. Imbedded T nuts gives everyone the option to use the yak as THEY want to use it. I don't know the cost of such add-ons at the manufacturing level, but do believe that you will sell more yaks because of it. I've owned 30+ boats over 59 years of boating. None was perfect when I bought them. All needed some tweaking.

Yes, this is the concept we are going for. The cheapest is to do everything at factory level but then that drives up retails and people can buy features they do not want. Adding tnuts is pretty cheap so i think we will offer flexibility and kits or packs that people can buy depending on their applications. There would be basic stuff with the boat for people that was to do it more DYI..
