What It’s Like to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro

  • In the latest episode of Coffee or Die, Marty Skovlund, Jr. travels to Tanzania with retired Green Beret Terry Finley to tackle the tallest freestanding mountain in the world: Mount Kilimanjaro.
Terry came up with the idea as a way to raise money for Clear Path for Veterans, a regional nonprofit organization with locations in New York and Massachusetts that helps transitioning veterans.
Marty joined the hike to show that for veterans, your best days aren’t behind you just because you took off the uniform - you can find challenges and adventure without going to war.
With the best of intentions, Terry and Marty linked up with their guides, Wilfred and Sunday, along with a band of porters, and started their ascent. The hike was rigorous yet enjoyable, until the weather rolled in.
Battling rain, wind, snow, and decreasing oxygen levels, the two U.S. Army special operations veterans battled their way toward the summit, knowing that only 40% of climbers actually make it to Uhuru Point.
But with each passing day, the odds of summiting seemed to dwindle as deteriorating weather conditions forced many of their fellow hikers to turn back. This is one episode you won’t want to miss!
Clear Path for Veterans is a welcoming community of staff and volunteers serving all veterans and their families, with a focus on restoring, reconnecting, and integrating. Their in-house programs and services are innovative, adaptive, and flexible to the needs of those who serve, and rely on partnerships and collaboration. If you’d like to support Clear Path for Veterans, check out www.clearpath4....
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro safely and successfully largely depends on the competence of your guides. We cannot thank Wilfred and Sunday enough for their expertise on the mountain, and we wholeheartedly recommend Embark Exploration Company’s services if you want to take a stab at Kili yourself. You can learn more about them at www.embarkexpl....
The nation of Tanzania is beautiful, even enchanting. The natural beauty is their biggest asset, and they depend on money from tourism - especially those who visit their country to climb Kilimanjaro. More specifically, the porters and guides rely on the money they receive per trip up the mountain to support their families. With the recent worldwide pandemic, the tourism industry has taken a hit, disproportionately affecting the porters and guides in Tanzania. If you would like to support them, please visit www.kiliporter....

We wouldn't have been successful on this mountain if it weren't for the guides and porters who supported us every step of the way. They make their living taking people up the mountain, but the recent pandemic has had a significant impact on tourism, and thus, their livelihood. Please consider supporting them at kiliporters.org

I climbed Kilimanjaro in July/Aug of 2018. On the descent, was having terrible pain my legs. 10-12 porters took turns carrying me down on a stretcher from just below the summit, after we peaked, to our camp that night. I absolutely couldn't have done it on my own. Hardest thing I've ever done in my life, but also one of the best things I've ever done in my life. #PamojaPamoja

I watched this with anticipation and wonder, and was so ecstatic to see you all make it to the top, when I read that a traveler passed doing something so incredible and awesome, I was sad but then also amazed at the human spirit and how we will push ourselves, what a beautiful way to pass doing what you wanted to accomplish.

I climbed Kilimanjaro in 1972. We hired our own porters on the walk up. we joined a guided party after the 3rd day to reach the top. It was OK until over 15,000 ft; then altitude sickness begins to affect you. We gobbled a lot of aspirins. I made it to the top.
2 large 4 engine jets airplane came & circled around the peak. You can really see the curvature of the earth from the summit. Going down was tougher than going up. By the time we reached the bottom of the mountain, most of us could barely walk. I was 27 & very fit at the time. I was 145 lbs in 1974. I'm 74 now , 235 lbs & not very fit. Definitely one of my lifetime achievements.

I’ve never climbed that one but my ODA climbed Khan Tengri in Kazakhstan in 1998 or 99. After a certain elevation it becomes a suck fest. Cool sights though. Also a lot easier when your young and in shape lol. You guys did us proud though. De Oppresso Liber which for the uninitiated means hey, hold my beer and watch this. Although some claim it means “To Free the Oppressed”. Stay safe brothers.

You were lucky on day-2. My wife and I were 61 and the only exercise we did at home was walking 5-10 miles two or three times a week but on day 2 they made us walk all the way from Big Tree Camp to Shira-2. It was dark before we got there and we were just stumbling along by then :-) That was the only day you were luckier though because we never saw any rain the whole 7 days and I don't think I would have coped well with coming down from Lava Tower in snow. I found descending without falling really hard whenever we did it. The path was wet on the last day as we headed for the gate and I hated it.

Congrats on making the summit. You showed what is possible but also showed that it's not without risks. You left the summit acheiving a life long memory, while others go home with the memories of a loved one they lost along the way.
