  • Join me as I review my February BOTM choice - "The Women" by Kristen Hannah. This is a story about a young woman's struggle before, during and after her tour of duty as a trauma/ surgical nurse in Vietnam. It is a (mostly) spoiler-free review....I dove just a little deeper than the book jacket - but, hey! It's a BIG subject, so I don't think my little comments will lessen your experience of actually reading this book. Let's hope not!
My next adventure will be an episode where I address the questions on the "I'm So Annoyed" tag - I was tagged by Pat ‪@BookChatWithPat8668‬ and MJ ‪@M-J‬ (Reading This Life)
Next month I will add a short segment on pottery to my videos. My partner does pottery and I will show a few pieces and how they develop from a lump of clay into a beautiful, functional work of art!
Welcome to Beyond Books - this is mainly a book channel where I review books from the Book of the Month Club and other sources. However, I also like to post travel videos whenever I roam somewhere that I think might be interesting. Besides reading, my other hobbies are Diamond Art, gardening and cooking - so don't be surprised if you see some of that type of content on my channel as well. Thanks for taking a look!

Kristin Hannah is one of my favorite authors. You might check out The Four Winds. It's historical fiction about the Dust Bowl and another excellent read!

Terrific video! I really enjoyed your review of THE WOMEN. This is definitely on my TBR. Like you, I was growing up during this time period and have such vivid memories of the war and its effects on everyone. I vividly remember my mother and her sisters watching the draft lottery announcement on TV one year because they all had sons who were eligible to be drafted. You did a great job in talking about this important book. Thank you, too, for the shout-out. I will look forward to your "Things That Annoy Me" and your pottery videos!

Thanks Pat - you will like this book.
"Home Before Morning " by Linda Van Devanter is the book I mentioned in the video - that's another good one.

I loved Home Before Morning too!! Read it maybe 25 years ago. Still own it! My BIL was a surgeon in Vietnam 60-79. I was in 7th-8th grade. He almost went blind from exposure to Agent Orange. I was raised in Ohio near Kent State and remember that well. Being a nurse myself, I have always been fascinated by the nurses who served. Loved this book also.

@@BeyondBooks-wt5ilI will check that one out too. I recently read Alice McDermott’s Absolution, her newest book, which is also about American women in Vietnam, though they are wives of engineers and others working there, not nurses.

Great video! Really liked your review and getting a bit more insight to the experience of women in that time. If people could just stop fighting huh… On another note, I’m trying pottery for the first time next month! Looking forward to seeing your partners creations, mine will surely remain lumps haha
