- The RAAF E/A-18G Growler lighting up the skies over Brisbane for Riverfire 2018. Making its appearance after a series of storms cells had passed through the area, A46-302 made a series of high speed, full afterburner passes through the CBD in stunning lighting.
Apologies for the lower quality of this video compared to my other recent videos. This was my first time shooting with a new rig; mounting my video camera onto my DSLR, enabling me to shoot both photo and video at the same time.

Took my kids and despite them crying in shock at the noise (I forgot how loud the afterburners are), they didn't stop talking about it for weeks. Great vid, I will show them again so they can remember.

Great shot mate, we must have been fairly close by when the Growler went through. Riverfire is getting better each year I feel and it feels like its moving from a kind of Brisbane version of the New Years fireworks in Sydney and more to a really stand out event that is really valuable to us as a city. Also fireworks on jet ski's its a bit bogan but I could not stop laughing its was awesome ridiculous.

Great video. Riverfire just not the same without a Pig dump and burn to kick off proceedings and wrap up the show after the fireworks.

moogus8000 do you know for sure? I’m pretty curious lol do you or anyone else know how high the have to be to fly at top speed? Is there a limit on speed at certain altitudes due to friction I wonder? Wikipedia says top speed of the ea 18 is 1900km/h
riri just an educated guess. There’s another video of a hornet doing a fast pass at an air show at just under Mach 1 and it looks more than twice as fast as this pass. They can go supersonic at sea level, about Mach 1.2, but must climb to 40000 ft to hit their top speed of Mach 1.8.
Have a look for videos of supersonic passes, they are pretty damn impressive. They must be done out at sea because the shock waves break glass and damage buildings.

They cannot go supersonic in the city it would blow out windows, same reason they do not have supersonic airliners, they need to go supersonic high altitude or over the ocean. Not sure how they do full afterburner without doing so however. I suspect they use a type of air breaking with the thrust fairly high so the jet plumes are visible but it not going too quickly. Similar to accelerating with the breaks on but not as bad in air. Its still incredibly fast and they are absolutely under the level of the buildings in the city.
