Not as long as the exhaust gas temperature is hot enough. Notice that the water vapor from combustion is moving up and out of the exhaust pretty well. But pointing it down wouldn't hurt.
After installing a diesel heater in my motorhome, I brought one of these portable units thinking it might be a good back up for home heating if the power is off for any length of time..... I had been wondering before going to to much effort if they would still start if things got really cold when might really need it....but this video proves that should not be to much of a problem. Pretty impressive for the outside temp. My auxiliary diesel in my sailboat doesn't like to start in April after being on the hard. She's originally from the Caribbean and didn't come with glow plugs. I would imagine that the fuel pump would be quieter with the heater inside, not having to push the colder fuel through the lines.
@@Mchacz8008 not true, glow plugs only heat up the cylinder for a faster start. Diesel ignites with compression. It does not require a source of ignition. Too main items required for a running diesel engine is compression and good fuel pressure. Clean fuel is really important as well.
That's funny when I saw your comment I was already thinking about that heater. I have never found a use for it but I am thinking of buying a house with a small garage. Might be able to use it to warm it up while fixing my vehicle. Probably would be in shit with insurance if they found out though. I have another one I mounted under the back seat in my pickup and I ran it a lot instead of idling last winter and it probably paid for itself in not burning gas in my engine.
@@Another-Address yeah I'm kind of thinking the same. With what is going on in the world right now who knows what this winter will bring. There could be disruptions of energy. I live in an apartment with electric heat but thinking of making something so I could heat it through a window without causing damage if I had to. I don't know why I care, my new landlord is causing me difficulties that could interfere with my employment. Trying to buy a house but that may be out of reach.
I would have to shut that up put a quiet pump on it. I've just put mine inside a 200x200 PVC electrical box with very high density foam all around the wall including the lid. But I haven't got the unit in a box like this.
Yeah it's pretty loud, the Mic on that camera makes it sound even louder. I bought that one intending to keep it for emergencies. Although cold air from outside contains much higher oxygen levels than warm interior air, that is a physics fact...Fuel flow rate and dispersal is negatively effected by colder temps, I'm not sure there is any negative effect from locating the device outside though..The chamber will burn at the same temperature, whether inside or outside, the glow plug heats the fuel and air for combustion..You would want the air that is heated, that flows over the burn chamber and into your contained space to be inside air, but not the air that is burnt, that should probably be outside air, which is returned to the outside through the exhaust...
funny thing is when u started it the temp was already up at 3bars. surely if u left it outside at -30, it should be reading zero bar on heater casing temp. ????

Ok, every diesel heater video comment I see mentions to point your exhaust down or water will…blah blah blah! This video I had it pointed up just to test it in the cold. I did see a video where a guy piped it into the exhaust of his van and it plugged up on him, probably due to large surface area of his exhaust pipe slowing down the flow, but you are probably right. The one I have on my pickup both the intake and the exhaust have low spots, not extreme but still lower than the inlet/outlet. I drilled about a 1/16" hole at the low point in both pipes and have not had a problem with them.
